I think the Tacoma became the Bronco of Toyota. A restyle/upgrade can go for any price point. It’s graduated from a light truck to an enthusiast hobby vehicle.
I had one before my Tundra. Everyone loves Tacos, even girls who aren’t into trucks. It’s possibly the halo vehicle for Toyota.

I needed a new truck and was looking at maybe down sizing to mid-size. After looking at the prices, I wound up buying a used 2020 F150 with a 2.7 for 33.5k with 22k miles on it. Will the F150 last longer than a Toyota? Probably not, but for those prices I can buy two used low mileage F150s and keep one in storage when the first one dies.

@@joecharmley gotcha, yeah it’s not a value proposition in any way. I don’t know all the differences but one of the standout features of the Taco is the 2.4kw onboard power which is class exclusive. I can change my trail type for a full size truck for more room etc. I had high hopes but prices have just gotten a little crazy. With how things are trending I’m sure will start seeing rebates again. Now does that mean people won’t buy it? No im sure plenty will pay that price sure. But for some of us I’d rather spend that on something else etc. still an awesome trim and great to see the manufacturers getting involved. Good video.

Tim, as always, great video. The TRD Pro and TrailHunter are both exceptional vehicles in many ways; however, the price point and the hugely disappointing lack of payload makes them non-starters for me. I understand that these are off-road oriented trucks, but even the more pedestrian SR5s are lacking in payload and continue to be overpriced for a more basic truck compared to the competition. I have determined that I need about 1500 lbs of payload for a camper shell, camping gear, tongue weight, passengers, pet, etc. The beautiful and sharp Tacoma will not be on my list due to a lack of real world payload. LOL, 1705 lbs. of max payload. Show me real world payload. Thanks for sharing this on the TrailHunter. Toyota must think that we celebrate April 20th everyday!

I think 99.9% of people are not Baha running in their trucks. In northern Ontario, people pick Power wagons and I can understand that.

Toyota knows that if they set MSRP to be comparable to the competition, the dealers would tack on a $10k market adjustment. This is just corporate trying to get a piece of the pie.
What’s going to happen is the dealers will bolt a bunch of crap onto lower spec trims and simultaneously shaft the buyers and the manufacturer.

Considering at the hybrid adds $3700 to the price of a TRD OR and a gas price of $4/gal you will save about $26 per 1000 miles (using the 3 mpg better combined fuel economy), and it will take just over 142k miles of driving for the hybrid to pay for itself. As gas goes up that mileage until payoff number goes down. So if you’re planning on keeping the truck a while, and you can handle the reduced payload, the hybrid is worth it for the gas savings. Otherwise I don’t see the point of it. The hp and torque of the non-hybrid seems like plenty already. (Note that I didn’t take into account the increased tax on the more expensive hybrid. Obviously that will add a little to the payoff mileage).

    • @nordlandak6853
