12 mpg on a hybrid four cylinder??? I think Doug is totally breezing over this. I don’t care if you are doing Baja races with the thing, that is insane. What is the pay off for using a drivetrain that your fanbase doesn’t like/want? No mpg gain. Power is pretty much the same. More complexity and inevitably less reliability. And they are forcing it down your throat by making it the only option on upper trim levels. Great truck in a lot of ways but this powertrain seems to have missed the mark so much it isn’t even fun. I wish Doug would have dug into this a bit more (no pun intended). Seems inexplicable and inexcusable.
Exactly and all the battery and electrical components take up all the space under and behind the rear seats. If they had put a 6 cylinder with a turbo or supercharger I would probably get one. Would like to get a Ranger Raptor, but mark ups on those are over $70k. Insane what people are charging for midsized trucks.

If toyota took a little bit of inspiration from dodge and offered the (discontinued) time tested V6 or even better cramed an (discontinued) tundra V8 into it, this would be an awesome vehicle. Probably a top bestseller as well. As far as the "tuned from manufacturer" market goes.
I drove the Landcruiser utes in Australia and they all had stock snorkels. That’s the source of the turbo noise. It’s way more noticeable when it’s right next to your passenger side window.
The front metal loop under the front bumper is only rated as a tie down point. I do think it’s super weird it doesn’t have recovery hooks in the front stock when it’s got all the other off road goodies. On my off-road vehicles I always have an air compressor permanently mounted and wired up. It’s a must out on the sand or trails. It’s nice cause it’s you know it’s always ready to go but it does come at the cost of some space. I’ve been watching your videos since like 2016! Love all your reviews man!
companies will remove every single button and we all complain and then there’s this doofus who complains about the one company still adding physical buttons. if you think this is bad think about what liquid is gonna do to the electrical components of those massive touch screens or capacitive panels 🙄 and then instead of whatever function the button controls being broken the screen that controls several or perhaps every single function in the car is gone completely. just because it’s more minimalist and out of the way doesn’t mean it isn’t susceptible to the exact same thing.
My 2008 Toyota Tundra gets 12 plus miles per gallon in city driving and I'm hard on the throttle. I've got 60,000 miles on the odometer and 381hp! I'll never break any fuel economy record, but it really does put a smile on my face every day except Sunday when I fill her up!
I have a 2007 Tundra with just over 300,000 miles. Good job keeping the mileage low on your truck and know your truck will take you farther than you ever thought possible. Only issue I have with your statement, unless you have a super charger, our 5.7l v8 only has 381hp which I don’t think I would trade for the base v6 of the current model. The hybrid model, that’s a different beast
I know I should never bring up Ram in Toyota video but the RHO starts $5k more than this with 1500 payload, more clearance, useable back seat, and 0/60 under 5 seconds.
I hope the aftermarket brings a front locker. The only thing this machine is missing. I truly like this machine. May take a closer look at this truck at the dealership
18:12 negative body on frame ride quality? The Ford Raptor at 32 psi is the Cadillac of of yesteryear. Nothing out there that I've been in has a smoother, more comfortable ride. I wish car companies would offer a comfort series, similar to performance series, but with comfort in mind throughout. More tire, softer spring rates, more plush seat cushions. I bet if marketed and executed correctly it'd be a hit.
Right... my lifted Bronco with ttb and 35r15 was smooth as could be... what pot hole? What curb? The Raptor as well. Long travel suspension can be awesome for ride quality but you lose payload and towing. Gotta pick unless you do air ride.
They couldn't take them through the mud because other people had to review them the same day and Toyota wants to keep them looking nice for all the press 🤦🤦

Trail hunter is the new TRD pro. New TRD pro is a Baja now. Is the exhaust like that a risk to allowing it to flow into the vehicle when sitting still?
My opinion about overlanding vehicles is the personalization and modification of the vehicle itself. The ability to choose what equipment you install, and where/why or how gives the vehicle more of an intrinsic connection. Toyota providing things like the utility bar, the lights, and maybe even the compressor kinda takes that away from the end user. I can see the appeal and see where there is a market, but I feel like it's doing a lot to placate people who aren't taking this further than the farmers' market grass parking lot. Especially at $63k.

Nice truck. (No way I could afford a $65,000 vehicle like that, but I wouldn’t be adverse to owning one…) 😊
I'm gonna trade in my bicycle for one of these
Toyota - in my opinion - is probably the best car manufacturer out there today. I own a Highlander and a 2022 Tundra and they are just solid, reliable vehicles and Toyota takes really good care of their customers.
Keep what you have. This new stuff is unadulterated, overpriced junk. And it's made in Mexico.
Oh wow I can't wait to see one of these in person at the Costco parking lot.
“…like back in the old days” referring to the V6 power compared to the 4-cylinder…you mean like, last year Doug? 😂
Great looking & well equipped truck- awesome review, sir!
They should offer a non-hybrid option with the Trailhunter trim. I bet a lot of people who really want to use it for overlanding would prefer the peace of mind of simplicity.
"....then you'd have to go back to regular mirror driving like a PLEBIAN!!!"!! 😂 Oh Doug.... that was the hardest I've laughed in days!! Thanks bud 👍🏻🥃!
Those bronze wheels will look great at the Starbucks drive thru
You are absolutely pathetic
The exhaust sound comes from the speaker to disable open your tailgate and drive around with it open at least that’s how it is in my tundra Trd pro
Can’t wait to buy one of these in 20 years still going strong
Good luck , they will not last that long.
Doug you keep saying the TRD pro is for technical rock crawling and the TrailHunter is not. when it’s the other way around, the trd pro is a pre runner/high speed off roader with more emphasis on going fast off road than being technical. The trail hunter is definitely more suited to do technical crawling type off roading. i would know i own a trd pro 3rd gen lol. the armor and old man emu shocks on the hunter make it way better at technical driving
Does this trail runner model have the same weak spot in the front transaxle same as the one that failed in TFLtruck video?
Yeah that was embarrassing for a truck touted so highly as off-road capable
Good call
16:26 please tell me the floor mats are installed wrong... ive been in awe at how amazing everything on this truck is, please dont say toyota failed on the floor mats
Doug the type of guy who wears a sleeping cap and goes "mi mi mi mi mi" after he snores
Lmao
If toyota took a little bit of inspiration from dodge and offered the (discontinued) time tested V6 or even better cramed an (discontinued) tundra V8 into it, this would be an awesome vehicle. Probably a top bestseller as well. As far as the "tuned from manufacturer" market goes.
"You can turn on these lights to get some more light." Fascinating.
Or, being out there, in the woods, and contact "E.T." 😂😂😂😂😂
yay, outdoors review for an outdoors car!
Doug and Scotty Kilmer should do a collaboration review on the next 4runner
I don't think Scotty likes these new Toyotas with turbo 4 cylinders
….and 99% of them will never go off-road 😂
They will in 20 years 😂😂😂
Yeah but like the jeep rubicon.there will be plenty of gently used models for sale in a couple years that will be more affordable

Love what they did with the snorkel, hate what they did with the wheels & "roll bar"

Better approach angle, that's why they dont stick out.
(That's my guess)
Bring back the V6! I’m hanging onto my 2010 RAV4 V6 for as long as possible. Love that engine.
I only have 4 cyl 2010 Rav4!
@@mikem2055 it’s a good car but nothing like that V6.
@@rickm8456This has FAR more torque than the outgoing V6 or even the 5.7 liter V8 in the Land Cruiser 200 series.
Won't last as long
@@rxa177 You’re a genius you should work for Toyota.
I drove the Landcruiser utes in Australia and they all had stock snorkels. That’s the source of the turbo noise. It’s way more noticeable when it’s right next to your passenger side window.
No more boring cars indeed.
10 buttons sitting right next to the drink holder where 100% of all spills occur is wonderful.

@@sammymaestro7642it's sad you got no up votes but they got over 30
companies will remove every single button and we all complain and then there’s this doofus who complains about the one company still adding physical buttons. if you think this is bad think about what liquid is gonna do to the electrical components of those massive touch screens or capacitive panels 🙄 and then instead of whatever function the button controls being broken the screen that controls several or perhaps every single function in the car is gone completely. just because it’s more minimalist and out of the way doesn’t mean it isn’t susceptible to the exact same thing.
@@johngarcia2502 simple typo, sorry!
I got a 17 LC with the same engine. Love how comfortable it is, coming from a Rubicon, it’s like night and day in terms of comfort and features.
Love the paint and wheel combo!
Buying this truck at $63k when you can get a GX overtrail at $70k is... *boggle*
What makes less sense to me is that the Land Cruiser Prado is priced at 76k and marked up to 90k+.
True, but the GX isn't a truck. But a made in Mexico truck should not cost 63K.
I know I should never bring up Ram in Toyota video but the RHO starts $5k more than this with 1500 payload, more clearance, useable back seat, and 0/60 under 5 seconds.
Buying this truck when you can buy 10 20 year old Tacoma's for the same price or 5 10 year old tacomas is insane.

I didn’t expect all the lines and wires everywhere once you open the hood. Is a nice masculine looking truck
I can't wait to see the Trailhunter new Camry come out!
“Most off road ready truck straight from the factory!”
Rains.
“It’s too muddy to go off road!”
Spoken like someone who doesn't understand there are different kinds of mud and has never taken their vehicle further offroad than a parking lot
They couldn't take them through the mud because other people had to review them the same day and Toyota wants to keep them looking nice for all the press 🤦🤦
I think it's because they didn't want him to.
I just wish they had done something exciting for the powertrain, like a supercharged 5.7 V8. Oh well. Won't be long till we see LS swaps. That should do too.
It's great to see Doug left his grandmother's white chair at home. The Golden Girls set wants it back.
I absolutely love those bronze rims!

Wanted this one so bad but the price is just insane look at the competitors, the gas mileage in real world use is no better than last gen, we know it probably will be more reliable since it's a toyota but we still don't know for sure..
That thing is awesome, like the back to the future SR5 but for 2024
5:48 - The exhaust dumping out under the bed is strange
Super common for off roaders. Doesn't get hung up on the axle travel or pinched shut on rear drop offs.
Ah yes, I can't wait to encounter many of these with the grill light bar blinding everyone at night.
It's clear that Doug knows next to nothing about what is needed/wanted off-road
Looks crazy busy under the hood..
Don’t blame Doug for reviewing Toyota . Toyota is simply the best cars for regular and car enthusiasts . It’s your daily driver with your weekend car
Look how small the bed is compared to Doug's size 😂😂😂😂 thats such a cute girly truck
You can get this with the longer bed unlike the TRD Pro, great for overlanding!
those tires look so small lol
Its quite strange to see the rear view camera overlooking the bed when overlanders typically slap camper shells or cabs over the bed.
looks like a concept car
If I had to chose, I would go for the trail hunter, even though it looks really capable is much less tacky than the TRD Pro, especially inside
I like the extra bed length.
I like how the bolt on the right is already rusty 🤣

Doug the type of guy to have “guidelines” for his comment section
Asking the offroading people : do you think that the feature + use case difference vs the TRD Pro is significant enough to merit a different model?
"The one you really want, WITHOUT A TURDBO!!!" Total Gaabage!
What surprises me is its size. It looks just as big as a Tundra. And I never thought a Tacoma would ever be like that
