i have been metal detecting for 3 days and yesterday i found a gold cufflink and 2 days ago i found a silver dime.
Ladies(and some gents)...take your rings and bracelets off...second time out I never thought about this and spent nearly an hour chasing the rings on my right and only to swap and then chase the rings on my left with my pin pointer. It wasn't until I gave up on the hole and sat to have a cup of coffee that I realised what I had done.

If you happen to have about all of the different types of metal, even the ones you do t want, I highly recommend novices to have someone put the items in small numbered paper envelopes, separate them out on the ground, ground your machine and on a note pad, once you’ve scanned them all a d written down what you think is in each one, check your note pad as you open each one. You can check your skills against the sounds and any notifications your detect gives you, if any and learn the different sounds faster that way. That’s how I learned how to use my Garrett when I was overseas in the Philippines. It was a lot of fun.

Rule #1: Don't give up if you wasted an afternoon only finding rubbish. Nobody continually finds cool things, no matter how expert they are. Have patience and you will be rewarded. When I hit a field for the first time, I do a quick zig-zag, just to check the signals. If I notice the ground is virgin (not a landfill...), then I start over and detectthe field in a grill mode. A few more suggestions, when you find something, always check the hole for more signals afterwards, it could be a "spill", after you found an object (coin); detect around it going in a spiral direction away from it, especially on the beach, because it could have been someone running from the rain and dropping coins along the way. Follow a straight line from center to the next target and go in both directions; always carry extra batteries with you, and although rechargeables don't last as long as normal battery life, they cost alot less in the long run and are preferred. Avoid buying detectors that run with one or more 9-volt batteries. They are expensive and rechargeables are out of the question....

The title, avoiding ten beginner mistakes. Well, I've been detecting ten years now, and thought I would read this just to see now much this guys knows. Well, I'm here to tell you, I agree with all you points, and find myself repeating one point over and over again. It's, I get in a hurry to find something good and have to slow down and let my machine do it's thing. This makes a good refresher coarse for us experts too. Thank you for sharing.

Big newbie tip. People think they should block out the iron (iron bias) so do something like Fe 6-8. Better to take a few junky nails then miss a huge find within some junk
Just started this with my 6 year old -- he has a kids detector and I have a Garrett. Took us about half an hour of exciting bleeps leading to nothing before we realized that we were walking too close to each other and each detector was detecting the other one! 🤪

It's also helpful to know what frequency each machine is running.
One of my first lessons learned was not to get my detector or pin pointer too close to my left knee. I had a knee replacement several years ago. When I found a target I used my pin pointer as I was kneeling on the ground and the thing went crazy! I thought for sure I had found a large treasure chest of coins because as I kept backing up on the ground the pin pointer kept going off. I finally realized it was too close to my knee.
I'll have to remember that with my titanium ankle. LOL
I just got my metal detector last week . Went to the wetlands ( near Denver Colorado) and had much fun as it went off often . My daughter and I look forward to learning all we can and making this a regular hobby ! Thank you for all the tips ! Can’t wait to explore some more !

I recommend taking along a small water-filled squirt bottle, a soft bristle toothbrush, microfiber towel and a jeweler's loupe to see coin details and neoprene-coated gloves. Always tote out your "trash" finds. Good hunting and have fun!
I'm a newbie at metal detecting 3 weeks into it. I spent the first day in my backyard digging every signal to learn sounds and pinpointing. I would also say location, location location, do your research if possible. Thanks for the extra tips, cheers from Canada!
Great advice. My advice is to find a fairly common item to target and collect. Old buttons for example. This way you don't get skunked too often. Rare coins and jewelry are great, but uncommon. I have one spot, it's an open field where a railroad was in the 1800s. For some reason, there's tons of old square nails. I've got an old jug that I put them in. One day, I'll find something cool there, until then, more old square nails.
Try leaving the site looking better then it looked when you got there,

Yes YES YES!!! I live in NE Ohio. We've lost ALL hunting privileges several years ago in our city parks and all public schools due to people with poor metal detecting habits of not filling holes and leaving their trash laying around.
This may have been said in the comments I'm not sure but I feel the biggest thing for me after a couple months metal detecting now ......is just keep going stay at it stay focused and consistent...I've dug so much trash bottle caps pull tabs you name it ...to date my best find is a clad quarter....because it gets super hard to want to keep going and wondering if you actually enjoy this hobby...I've tossed my machine and said f%$^ this I'm selling it ...these guy on you tube really need to tell the truth about this hobby and not hide the truth lol thats when I was frustrated of coures that how I felt ..so long story short I do love metal detecting a lot.....dont burn your self out at first at first just give your self a hour and call it quits...the amazing stuff is out there and I will find it in time .

It's pretty easy figuring out what to do, but knowing what *NOT* to do is much more important! The benefit of learning from others mistakes is invaluable! I never assume I can do something just because it looks really easy.

I just wanted to say as someone who is taking up this new hobby you are providing a great service in showing a novice like me the right way of going about metal detecting I haven’t as yet been out as I am slowly acquiring the equipment and the better weather to hit the beaches and to find suitable fields around me.

Hey guy a Canadian here ,if i may add to the ,what to take list .i always take a n old t-shit or you could take an old towel to l put by the howl your about to dig ,particularly if you are in grounds that are kept up or taken care of like schools or playgrounds ,soccer fields and such .as that way you can put your shovel fulls of dirt on the towel, root through the dirt ,then when you are done you can poor back the dirt into the hole and flip back the plug as i always leave one side of the plug still attached ,then hammer the plug tight with the butt end of my little shovel ,then rack the grass with my fingers to freshen the grass .so if you do it right ,it leave the aria nice and clean ..all most like you were never there.
Get a good pin pointer to go along. It will really help
Oh yes. It makes a huge difference.
I have one of those Garret carrot the orange one. Make sure they have good battery's in them. If you notice it not wanting to stop beeping no matter what, and you have to shut if off to get it to stop. Change the battery!!!!!! I thought mine was junk hardly used it when it started doing that. Then one day I wonder if I change the battery. Sure enough that's why it was screaming at me!!

Perseverance. When I first started detecting all I seemed to get was rubbish and nothing else. I kept going and now I seem to get my share of the good finds. Finding rubbish seems to be part of the apprentiship you need to go through while learning your machine, when and where to go. Cheers John

Just got my first Garrett ACE 300 for Christmas, now that the weather has been getting better, I'm really excited to get started.
I loved the California weather reference. Having been through 2 tornadoes here in Northern California along with unpredictable Sierra Nevada weather, I can tell you it does get pretty wild and wet here. Also, I'd add a couple of points for your list of dos and don'ts: First: Practice Situational Awareness, meaning stop and assess the location you are hunting in and take in the big picture before you start and also during your hunt - Just good to know what is going on around you at all times for safety's sake and to perhaps not miss something that might do you some good. I cannot tell you how many hunts have had me score good finds just by stopping and looking around and also how many rattlesnakes I avoided by carefully looking before moving about. Secondly: Carry a good first aid kit with all the basics on your person. I've had many times where having that on hand not only for me, but people I was hunting with saw this come in very handy. It's the old Scouting motto: "Be Prepared". Good video and many happy hunts to you!

he's probably referring to southern calif.. hadnt rained or stormed here (til last week) for 6months .. Laguna mountains & along the I8 corridor to Ocitillo can get some rough conditions in winter though.. looking forward to the solitude out there then.

If you're detecting alone for several hours in the forest or mountains around wildlife like bears, cougars and the like, I suggest carrying a handgun. Also a backup charger for your cell phone if you're recording finds on your phone plus using a GPS app so you can mark where you found the treasure hoard. 🤔

Another great informative video. Im new to the quest. Im learning every day from people like you. I have all the gear and no idea. I dont have the abbility to ground ballance. When i go out i have no expectations but seem to turn up some wonder full things. Yesterday i found a bronze age arrow head. Some thing you missed was insurance. Many thanks for your expertees and time.🐝
Some good tips there - just something I would add about swinging technique, as you go round to the left and right (to the peripheries of your swing) it is important to keep the coil as low as possible. To do that you need to swing your upper body round and adjust the angle of your wrist. Once you get that sorted, it's not hard but I am astonished when I go on club digs to see how many detectorists - some who have been at this hobby for years - don't do it. They have the coil low in front of them but as they go to the side it lifts well off the ground at an angle. Second thing, if you are using a Deus with a HF coil, or one of the X35 coils on a fairly high frequency, the detector doesn't work if you swing the coil too slowly. It's an over-generalisation to say you should swing slowly because that doesn't work for all equipment.

Kris, you are an inspiration and a thoroughly down to earth and decent gent too! Found your channel about a month ago just as I was starting to look for a detector and have been 'addicted' ever since! I've always secretly wanted to get into metal detecting since I was a kid - I'm now 54!) and you've finally given me the impetus I needed. Your attitude is bang on, I've always been interested in history and archeology (if I had my time over again . . .), but to be honest it's another excuse to joy of being outdoors, with the added bonus of 'you never know what the next bleep will be! - oh, another bottle cap . . .'. I'm only on the beach at the moment but I've done my research and am working on my letters now to seek my first permission - thanks to you other vid! Keep up the good work chap!

I have found that after a rain the machine will perform much better and the ground is much easier to dig. Also, there are three essential pieces of equipment you will need; A good digging tool that is sturdy and will not make a mess of the sod/grass, a good pinpointer and finally a good bag that you can strap to your belt or around your waist to carry off all of the rubbish as well as the treasure.

You make it interesting and fun but you kept stressing the importance of keeping ourselves safe. You listed down the things that do's and don'ts of this hobby.
The safety guide is the most important like finding items that may be dangerous like bombs. Keep it up. I am from Malaysia by the way.

Dig scratchy targets until you know what your looking at, then keep digging them… I’ve found several very cool finds mixed I. Iron. Also try to avoid more modern dumps till you are more experienced to prevent frustration. My last tip is to get a pinpointer and if you can find rechargeable detectors it will save you money on batteries

Great video :-) thank you for all the wonderful tips. I lived in deep Southeast Texas for 11 years and when it rained which was pretty often it was in buckets. Texas is so darn big it depends on where you live because in western Texas it's more desert like.

If you’re digging a signal and it seems to disappear it can be a number of things (including frustrating 😆). Sometimes it will be a small relic/artefact which is stuck on your shovel. Also always remember to ground balance every so often and check your sensitivity as this causes falsing which can confuse people. So remember to ground balance and use appropriate sensitivity

Thank you. I had no idea it was better to go out when things are wet from a signal standpoint. I've been doing it mainly because the ground is softer to dig when wet.

Dear Bleepy!! As always, Excellent video!! Love how exited you are and you’re really good at teaching and explaining!! After watching I was thinking of a couple of things to ad. First a real pet peeve, I’ve heard people say they don’t fill in their holes (even in people’s lawns, the audacity!) what seems totally logical I guess for some isn’t (weird!) second, is to always check your hole after finding what you think was the target you where digging for. I know in the past I probably missed things by not doing this. Third, don’t lean on your shaft, it can break and fixing it will cost you a lot of money you shouldn’t have to spend. Local historical information centers can be helpful for finding places you can go find things.
For instance in my county in Michigan we have a small museum about are area. Was a logging town way back in the late 1800s there were a bunch of townships that sprang up but became lost in time. Some of those places can be great source for historical finds.

Great video Kris and some really useful tips for beginners. Joining a local club can also help, with getting out on land, helping to identify finds and help with using and buying machines!
Newcomers, if your machine has variable settings, don't be in a hurry to make adjustments or load custom programs. Read the manual, start with the basic settings and learn your detector. Understand the detector and then in time you can learn what happens when you make changes. ATB MMMD

Your right about the pain, while not metal detecting I spent the better part of a day and a half searching for arrowheads near my house. I had found 2 within reaching distance (2 ft )apart,it made me want to keep looking after that weekend I couldnt turn head neck and back was stiff as a board
New sub here. Just picked up an older Garrett scorpion gold stinger. I like to combine metal detecting and mushroom foraging. A sort of 2 for one deal. So I'll include a knife and foraging bag for the shrooms.. Tip #11.
Good video Kris. Take a spare bolt for the coil to shaft. If the bolt breaks your day is over also the time it takes to get a new one.

@@jbaker4900 Zip ties would keep you swinging. Personally I ordered a spare bolt.
The bolt breaks fairly easily on the Deus so yes, spares are essential. Funny story - I was out one day when I needed a leak, so I wandered to the side of the field. I was just - er preparing myself to do what I needed to when I accidentally swung the metal spade round and whacked the lower section of the Deus, which was not balanced on the ground. The bolt sheared and that was that, game over for the day. I've always had a couple of them in the boot since! I've also had one go when the coil got tangled in a bramble (or ''briars' as they call them in some parts of the world) so watch out for that.
I loved the video, thank you. OK, Dig around the target, don't go straight for it. Don't rush onto property, get permission. Take your time to learn the machine... WAIT and clean lightly. Know your machine... WAIT till after the rain and you'll find better. So, what "I" am hearing with basically all the tips is PATIENCE... got it... be patient.
