Hi Skaters Just wanted to add a quick note about helmets. In this video I say cycle helmet. Cycle helmets aren't great for skating as they only protect the top of the head. For skating you need a helmet which covers the entire head and is double certified. In my more recent videos you'll notice that I wear a helmet to protect my brain, Living in the UK it also frequently doubles as an umbrella! Stay safe skaters x
Hi. I’m wearing Risport boots in this video on a Star plate and Britney Spears wheels. I’ve been skating a long time so my setups can be a little unusual.
I've been skating since I was 5-6 years old (so for almost 20 years) and I ALWAYS wear a helmet. I've read about a man who was skating pretty slowly but he hit a curb in a very unfortunate way, hit his head and died on the spot. Wear a helmet always. You can skip the pads in my opinion if you want to, but protecting your head is absolutely paramount! I see so many little kids not wearing any helmet and it drives me crazy 😅
I'm glad I'm not the only one with the fear of falling on my head. I was starting to feel silly with my helmet because I rarely see other skaters wearing them.
Agreed. I fell backwards this past winter while ice skating, and managed to spread my arms and slap the ice as I fell, like I'd learned to do in karate, so as to divert the impact away from my head. I fell too fast to tuck and roll in a proper breakfall, but I came out of in unharmed. After that day, I always wore a helmet, even if none of the other adults at the skating rink were wearing one.
Thanks!!! Alicja I just took my skates yesterday and thanks to warn and every beginner out there who's watching this comment and katie looking forward for more vids from u XD
This is such an important comment. I mention a helmet in this video but I wear a helmet in recent videos too. I feel that even as an experience skater I should a) set a good example but also b) I need to protect myself too just because I’m experienced doesn’t mean a stone etc can’t take me out when I least expect it. Thank you for raising awareness Alicja xx
The love the freedom roller skating gives me. There’s nothing like skating outside in the sunshine. Just make sure you’ve got safety gear. The asphalt is very unforgiving. 🤕🛼💕
Oke, so I'm 50 and have never rollerskated before in my life but my girlfriend and my stepdaughter started a few weeks back and it looked like so much fun I just want to join them. Today my skates came in (Roces RC2) and got on them for the very first time. Oh boy, I really found it very hard to keep my balance. I tried that snakepattern at a certain point but I really wasn't able to turn at all although I had loosened my trucks at the start, or so I thought. But now I learned from your other video I also had to losen the locknut at the base first so I guess my trucks were still very tight. I felt a little disheartened but this video gave me new hope and a few clear objectives to try. I like your way of explaining, really clear and to the point without the overenthusiastic vibe of some American youtubers.
Thank you for your kind comment. Take your time, getting the balance is the main thing. Keep the weight on the ball of your feet and bend your knees, think of them as shock absorbers. I always recommend safety gear too especially if you’re skating outside. ⛑
@@Skatie Thank you for your advice. So today I made some space about 6m wide in my home to practice your exercises like the marching. I practised some 45 minutes and balance was a lot better than yesterday. I could actually somewhat skate the whole 6m and I also learned to get up from the ground with nothing around to grab. I'm a lot more optimistic than yesterday this time. I have a complete safety kit that I definitely use, although the knee and elbow pads need to be exchanged for a bigger set. I do have a question about my wheels. I read everywhere that for outside you need soft (78A) and big (62 or 65 mm) wheels. My skates come with 54mm 85A wheels (32mm wide). Will they be good enough for a beginner like me to practice outside on tarmac or would it be better to upgrade to softer and bigger wheels? Thank you again for your great beginner videos. It really helps.
Wow sounds like you’re making amazing progress well done. Bigger wheels are better outside as they give you a higher clearance over debris etc and softer will give you a smoother ride. However, there’s nothing to say you cannot give your harder, smaller wheels a try and see how you get on. Just know if the ride is super bumpy then a softer wheel may help and if the bottom of the skate (the kingpin) hits the ground a bigger wheel would be better.
I was thinking that too! I skated when I was young, but 30 years later it's like I never skated, so I'm learning again too, Most channels tell you how to put the skates on and then they go all DISCO QUEEN!!! And I'm still trying to see how to get off the chair with highly slippery wheels on my feet. Skatie here actually lays all the facts out. I feel like I may actually roll by the summer, now!
I really love the way you explained everything! Simple and straight to the point. I feel like in a lot of other videos I've watched, the topic is OVERexplained and it becomes confusing. Looking forward to new videos from you! 😊
You explained everything so great! I’m baffled that I haven’t heard anyone say “put your knee behind you” to properly stroke skate.. I’ve been struggling so much trying to figure this out on my own, and now it all seems so much easier!
This was really good! Three awesome ways to stop outside. I remember as a little kid just flying off into grass and falling down as a stop method. Much better to have the stops in this video!!
I just bought my gear a couple of months ago and to prepare I started watching videos before hand. I have probably viewed about 40 so far and I wish I had spotted your new channel in the beginning. Not to say that I don’t appreciate what I have learned so far from others, but clearly when it comes to teaching you are a natural. You have a great way of simplifying the information without loosing any of it ( if that makes sense). I learnt to roller skate through our local roller derby league. We were taught when falling to close your fist, because there's a risk of your fingers being skated over. BUT let's face it, when you fall over you don't always remember to do that and often fall with hands open and palms down. So, gloves aren't such a bad idea. Thanks for the tip!
Thank you Katie this is awesome!! I just got new skates after probably 20 years without any activity, so far I'm re learning balancing and this helps a lot, warmest regards from Costa Rica 🇨🇷
Very first video I have seen (seen several) that mention that trucks being to tight can make certain moves more difficult, not impossible. That was a game changer for my backward skating. Thanks.
Your videos are by far the best for newbies to skating I’m soo thankful. Learned so much already and can’t wait to test the tips out when I’m next on the rink
omg thank you sooo much!! you explained everything so well. I'm getting my skates tomorrow and I feel like i'm prepared because of you. you just earned yourself a new subscriber ☺️
I just bought my first pair of skates and I am expecting them next week, this has been by far the MOST helpful video i've watched!! I love how brief but informative the sections are and how there are videos explaining in more detail. This was my first time coming across your account and I'm really glad I did! :)
Nice video. It is nice to watch a video with good sound quality. I didn't know about loosening the trucks, I'm an inline roller skater and about a week ago I bought my first pair of quads so that was new for me.
Thank you. If you need more technical information as you progress I have a full anatomy of a roller skate video too. ua-cam.com/video/pkCUo0aisyw/v-deo.html
hi katie i just bought my first pair of rollerskates and really excited to learn, thanks for all the tips! i been looking for many videos and yours are my favorite :)
I started out by doing it in my bedroom, since it has a smaller space. My house has all tile flooring so it was slippery, but it was alright. I watched other videos and learned things from my friends in the roller skating rink today. It's my first time there after practicing for like 3 days in my house which is a bad idea but ehhh- The only thing I haven't learnt is stopping, most times I just slam into a wall or something or freeze until I slow down, so thank you for the tips! :) I fell multiple times as well- I can't get my balance completely correct. I also did not know that there were different, simpler ways to skate. Like the snake pattern for skating, I just started out and eventually got to the point of lifting my feet, even if I wasn't good. Oh shoot that's so long- I am sorry about that.
Sounds like you’re doing really well xx. Most of all, have fun and it will all get easier, practice as often as you can. I have a couple of videos with lots of stopping options. Hopefully one will work for you x. ⭐️⭐️💕🛼
Your video was so informative. I had studied Roller skating for 2 yrs but had to stop bcz of my studies. So I've been practicing alone at my home for 3 yrs. SoI really didn't know how to stop while skating. Thnx for ur video.
Thank you Skatie. Your Videos are great! Rly. It helps a lot and I lost some fear cus u said falling will happen and thats what im most afraid of. But now I know I better fall forward. So thank you very much.
Im just getting back on skates after about two years and about 2-3 days after I got my skates I fell over a pebble spraining my wrist.... This advice is helpful.
I know this video is 3 years old. But this video has helped me out so much. I've been trying to roller blade. And I couldn't get the hang of it. Turns out I was using the wrong wheels. And now I can rollerblade.
Hi! Thank you for an infotmative video I wish -i paid better attention to the first time I watched. For everyone out there thinking "I don't need the safety gear, nothing will happen to me" That was me yesterday right before i fell and my arm broke off. I had to numb down my whole arm, stretch it back to place, and I will still need surgery. So use the safety gear, it can happen to anyone regardless of how long you've skated (I have done it for almost two years)
You’re my new favorite person!! I’ve been skating with rental skates at rinks. Decided to get skates for outdoors (outdoor wheels as well, obviously) and HOLY COW!! They move FAST! I was not prepared! 😂 I feel like a beginner all over! If i BREATHED, they rolled! Getting used to them is hard, thank you so so much for this!! ♥️♥️ Love you
This is helping me sooo much. Since i started watching your videos (yesterday) I've learned skating backwards, the Hez, and Scissors. And I can do half of a spin (if i try more i start falling back).
Thanks so much for this entire playlist, Skatie! These are so helpful, pretty much like a Theoretical Course on roller skating haha! I've been learning through your vids for a week now, my progress makes me proud of myself. All love!
Hi! Katie I’m very new to quad skating, and I’m very glad to come across your videos. You really take your time and explain the different steps. I truly appreciate that. I just go my skate almost 1 week ago.
I wish I had seen your video sooner, I went skating with my friend a month or two ago and I struggled alot as it was my first time. This video has been super useful
Hi. They’re from the Skechers Britney Spears skates from the early 2000’s. They have a slight glitter effect, I love the soft ride they have, although because they’re so soft they don’t have a great deal of roll. .
As a X roller derby player, I agree with all of this! Although there is one easier way to get up. Basically get on one knee, and put your arm on it using your knee to push yourself up. I find that more easily done then using your palms on the ground, putting your Weight forward and potentially throwing yourself off balance. Also whenever I go to a rink and see people standing straight up while skating I always want to yell BEND YOUR KNESS, XD it really dose help keep you on your feet and speed less time eating wood floors.
@@Skatie your welcome! And yeah haha, another is when they hold hands and are already off balance. Once I had to jump over a small group of people because they all fall due to holding hands.
I've ordered my first pair of skates and I stumbled upon your video ! I've already done a bit of ice skating so I should be fine, but seeing your video helped for some tips I didn't have :) Now, I'm even more excited and waiting for the delivery is going to be a pain
I have a question about using the front wheels vs toe stop: isn't stopping what the toe stop is for, or does it serve another purpose? Do you not have to worry about wearing down your wheels unevenly? I'm sorry for the elementary questions, I'm new to roller skating and just trying to learn everything I can until I can afford a pair and actually roller skate. Thank you so much for sharing your skills, so greatly appreciated!
This is a great question. I generally Mix it up when it comes to stopping. So I’ll use toestops or I’ll use the wheels. Stopping will cause wear to both wheels and stoppers which will both need to be replaced eventually. It can be a good idea to switch the wheels around to stop uneven wear and the same with toe stops they can be turned once they start to wear.
I love your videos and there is something I still haven't seen... when you are skating in the street sometimes there are little tiny rocks and makes you fall, how can you avoid that? is it that you need to skate faster or slower? (I'm a beginner -obviously hahaha- )
I’m getting a pair of roller skates soon and have been roller blading for the past couple years! The stopping really helped, if I did it on my own I would’ve fallen A LOT. (I would’ve stopped like you do with roller blades, but with the toe stop instead of the back stop, which I don’t know if you can with roller skates)
Oh you should definitely do well on quads coming from a roller blading background. I have a video just on stopping if you’d like some more detail. Have lots of fun. 👍💕🛼
Hi Katie, thanks for a great video. I was just curious about why you’re ok with wearing down your front wheels as opposed to your toe stop! Thank you in advance, Mae 😊
Hi. Great question. I tend to use my wheels just because they are a lot harder than my toe stops so wear down slower plus when they start to wear the wheels can be swapped around to even the wear. Hope this helps x 💕⭐️⭐️🛼
Thank you. I have custom skates, Risport Cristallo boots on an atlas plate. This is quite an old setup. Thank f you’re looking at a beginner setup the rookie artistics are a good starter skate. amzn.to/3NoryfB

Hi! Katie I’m very new to quad skating, and I’m very glad to come across your videos. You really take your time and explain the different steps. I truly appreciate that. I just go my skate almost 1 week ago.
Oh thank you xx. I hope you enjoy your skating journey 👍💕
The lemon/snake technique is soooo useful as it will really help when you start skating backwards
Definitely. It’s a great way to start backward skating.
Thank you I must say you gave some really nice pointers I am a beginner myself thank you

2:00,.....great tip!! Harlicks and Roll line?
These are risport boot and Atlas plate (super old setup)
I wish I had seen your video sooner, I went skating with my friend a month or two ago and I struggled alot as it was my first time. This video has been super useful
Thank you. I hope it helps on your next skate 🛼💕👍
Thank you I have been having trouble with stopping without almost falling each time or just safely crashing into something.
🛑🛼🛼 can be tricky. Glad you’re getting the hang of it x

Thank u for helping me to start my dream of skating..
Oh that’s lovely. Hope you enjoy it xx 🛼
Your videos are so clear! Perfect for beginners. What brand are your 75A wheels? Thank you!
That’s a great alternative. Thank you. I feel you with wanting to tell everyone to bend their knees. 😝👍💕
@@Skatie your welcome! And yeah haha, another is when they hold hands and are already off balance. Once I had to jump over a small group of people because they all fall due to holding hands.
Thank you so much for sending me the link to your videos on the FB group!
No problem, enjoy your skating journey x 🛼

Now, I'm even more excited and waiting for the delivery is going to be a pain
Skate deliveries are the best but it feels like it takes forever for them to arrive. I hope you enjoy your skate journey and have loads of fun. 💕👍🛼

Thank you. 👍💕🛼 hope you enjoy your skating journey.
I generally
Mix it up when it comes to stopping. So I’ll use toestops or I’ll use the wheels. Stopping will cause wear to both wheels and stoppers which will both need to be replaced eventually. It can be a good idea to switch the wheels around to stop uneven wear and the same with toe stops they can be turned once they start to wear.
thank you for this i needed this cause im buying a skate for my birthday!! great job!
Thank you. Have fun 👍🛼
Love the quality of your videos. Content very relevant as a beginner skater. Thank you for making all of this just for meeee! 🙏❤️

I plan on roller skating this summer and have never done so before, I'm excited and nervous.
I love skating in the sunshine. Fingers crossed it makes it way to the UK soon. ☀️
I love your videos and there is something I still haven't seen... when you are skating in the street sometimes there are little tiny rocks and makes you fall, how can you avoid that? is it that you need to skate faster or slower? (I'm a beginner -obviously hahaha- )
A staggered stance will really help with those annoying little stones. ua-cam.com/video/i__KUb2PIjM/v-deo.html
@@Skatie you're the best ❤️
Learning from this video that falling is inevitable is something I needed to hear lol I don’t think roller skating is for me after all 🤣🤣🤣
Falling is definitely part of learning. Keep loose, if you feel a wobble get low, grab your knees or ankles. ⭐️🛼💕
THANK U FOR SOVLING MY VIBRATION PROBLEM WHEN EVER I GO OUTSIDE
Fantastic! Glad you fixed your problem. 😎🤩
Just got my first pair in the mail and took em for a spin after this!! Thank you had a blast

obrigado. isso é muito gentil 🛼
I love the transitions! ✨
Thank you 👍💕🛼
I’m getting a pair of roller skates soon and have been roller blading for the past couple years!
Great tutorial on smart for newbies.
Thank you 👍💕🛼
I had fun watching this & I love your personality 🥰

Which brands of skates are best for beginners?
Hi. Have you seen this video? ua-cam.com/video/Z5cSnbNfuYo/v-deo.html
@@Skatie Very helpful! Thank you Katie! 😊
Love the tutorial! What skates do you have?
Thank you. I have custom skates, Risport Cristallo boots on an atlas plate. This is quite an old setup. Thank f you’re looking at a beginner setup the rookie artistics are a good starter skate. amzn.to/3NoryfB
