Some of the things I learned in my first year of skating:
    - feeling like you're loosing balance? SQUAT. The more you bend your knees and widen your stance, the easier it is to regain balance (and if you end up falling, it won't hurt as bad)
    - if you're looking for new skates, choose a model with an adjustable toestop. My first skates didn't have those and as the toestops wore down I had to get used to a new angle of contact with the ground. With an adjustable toespot you can, well, adjust that angle so it stays the same, and also make sure it fits your preference.
    - get comfortable with taking your skates apart. You will be doing a lot of it as you explore what type of skating suits you best. Chances are you will want to loosen/tighten your trucks or change your wheels. The sooner you figure out how to do those, the more comfortable you can be while learning how to skate.
    - if you can only wear one piece of protective gear, wear knee pads. You will be hitting your knees the most, with your wrists as a close runner up. And it's pointless to buy cheap protective gear, it won't really protect from anything. Investing in good protection is investing in your health.
    - if you're planning on using toe guards, go for the full ones (the ones that go over the enire front of the boot). The ones that only cover the tip twist everytime you scratch the ground so you constantly have to rearrange them.
    - skate with friends! You will feel much more relaxed and confident, and it will boost the speed of your progress.

if you’re a child, then you need to wear a helmet. Period.

Agreed. I bought my skates last year and I'm a grown adult, and you have more control of your body and balance. You should ALWAYS wear a helmet at the skate park. If youre just doing drills or skating for fun, there's no need to wear a helmet. All kids should wear a helmet if theyre beginners!! Personally, I had been to the skate rink and had rollerbladed as a kid so i didnt feel the need to wear a helmet. Ive been rollerskating for over a year and I've only bonked my head on the sidewalk once. I do think if youre out of your comfort zone, WEAR A HELMET. But if youre an adult you dont really need to wear a helmet if you have your pads on (i wear my pads 100% of the time outside). Again, this is personal to me because i had bladed as a kid some, so i knew that i could contorl my balance and knew "how" to fall

I picked up roller skating because I really wanted to learn artistic skating--- I thought it was the closest thing I could get to figure skating, which I've always loved watching on the Olympics when I was younger. Ice skating isn't always available, so I'm really glad roller skating is something you can do year-round. I've enjoyed every minute of learning-- even if it's hard! My sister used to work at a roller rink when I was a kid. I remember it was the coolest job ever when she let me behind the counter to help with all these skates tucked into their cubbies. I went roller skating last weekend for the first time in nearly two decades. I got lost in the flashing disco lights, pop music, and the soft transition from carpet to wood. I felt like a new skater again, my arms flailing in circles. It is such a classic tradition to include the polka dance, chicken dance, and backward skating. I learned backward skating for the first time. Roller skating is that one lover that no matter how much time has passed, they still gives you butterflies.

It's not irresponsible. Beginners don't wear helmets in the skating rink. You don't have to address anyone. Always know people will always have something to say. Can't please everyone because they aren't perfect either.

I agree with this. Also, it's because of her awesome videos that I just dropped some serious money on my own pair of skates today because she was so positive about it. And I only skated twice in the past month. That being said, she was accountable when she fell not wearing her gear. And lastly, my BOG OLE HEAD won't find a helmet for my head size until I special order it. So... all in all, everyone makes their own choices. All those worried parents need to monitor what their kids watch and remember that each person makes their own choice. (As if we didn't learn that in this pandemic.) 🙄🙄🙄 #dontgetmestarted. Last to say, she answered very gracefully to everyone despite the fact that she has the option to not acknowledge everybody and their mom. Sigh. Gotta love her

Skating with all your protective gear but not your helmet is like surviving on food but never drink water. You need both. I personally believe gear the helmet is the most important gear you need. I've seen people get hurt on their head, because they didn't have a helmet, and they were just skating. Some of them were even skating slow! I'm genuinely trying to just give advice! Love your videos and your outlook on life. Also, I you're so brave going it and tracking yourself to skate. And you came a long way on such little time. BE PROUD OF THAT GIRL!

Awww, I understand the feelings about protective gear. I took me a WHILE to find knee pads that would fit my legs (Scabs Derby pads) and they are very bulky and not ideal for dance skating. I will be using them as I try to gain more confidence with skating in the street. I live in Brooklyn and the constant traffic is a bit distracting and intimidating. It also took me two tries to get the right size helmet. I assumed that I would need a XL because my head is kinda big for a woman (23") but I actually needed a size Medium. Anyway, thanks for going over the skate tools. I haven't seen them compared with this kind of detail. I wish websites selling them would be that informative!

Honestly, I would suggest against loosening your trucks right out of the box, the cushions always have a bit of a break in period and if you realise you're having difficulty turning, you can always loosen them a little later on. I find that when you loosen trucks straight away, it often makes it really hard to find that perfect 'sweet spot' where it's perfect for you, and you'll constantly be adjusting them.

Nice😊You summarized everything one has to know when starting👍🏻. I started earlier this year and had to find everything myself. The bearing remover is not a bad idea, because the axes and the bearings can get damaged by removing bearing with the axe, especially light up wheels that have the generator in the middle between the bearings, i scuffed one generator of mine when I went to deep in the middle of the wheel with the axe. I still haven’t got one but it is on my list, until then I try to be careful😅

To each their own with the helmets and pads, it's your body and your choice as far as I'm concerned. I've been skating for about a month now, and have been progressing pretty quickly. I practiced falling and have movement history in gymnastics and circus so I know how to fall safely. Two days ago I guess I got over confident and took a bad slam while doing a transition. It happened so fast I barely had time to react. I managed to avoid my tailbone, but I wasn't able to avoid hitting my head. I'm really glad I was wearing all my pads and a helmet at the time because it could have been so much worse. I still managed to give myself a minor concussion even with the helmet. I plan to wear my gear pretty much always now.. because you just never know. With all of that said, what you do with your body is your business, not mine. I don't think helmet wearers are better than non-helmet wearers. You need to do what feels right for you! Best wishes and happy skating!

I know this comment is sorta late to win anything but that's Ok!
And oh! I love roller skating.
I would take roller skating over any structured excercise because it was tons of fun, I never got bored doing it, it's amazing excercise, it helped me blow off anxiety or steam, it boosted my confidence, it cleared my mind and even gave me a euphoria.
    Unfortunately... I can't skate anymore. I'm a cancer survivor
& one of the chemotherapy regimens sorta crippled me. It gave me permanent nerve damage & a bi-lateral foot-drop. With that, unfortunately, I have to wear AFO's (Ankle Foot Orthosis) on both feet..
Anyway, I'm noticing that roller skating is slowly making a come back. That's a good thing! It also gives kids something active to do to do. And I still love to watch.✌
