      i wouldn't blame yourself. if this (great) video essay series shows anything, it's the extent to which MGSV's plot was presented as a series of intelligence briefings. you're not exactly going to soak up a plot delivered through RAND corporation reports read aloud on tape cassette. it's actually crazy how hands-off this approach is compared to the rest of the series. instead of pivotal plot turning points being delivered in the most direct manner possible, events actually "experienced" by you just as much as your player character, via gameplay or cutscene (think the 4th-wall breaks of Psycho Mantis or Colonel's I Need Scissors 61) key turns of the plot car are delivered in a pre or post-mission briefing.

To fool their enemies into thinking that Big Boss is instantly on his feet and making moves in Africa, while also tricking/convincing Venom Snake that he is the Big Boss. Note that while all of this is happening, Big Boss is still recovering so they needed someone to take his place.

      @cooppp 3 роки тому +11

      @@Gadget-Walkmen The game is basically MGS2's S3 plan, where all of society can be manipulated and shaped by carefully selecting what information is passed on. It's highly implied that the Patriot AI's are already active and are the true clients that give Diamond Dogs their missions so that they can stomp out the rogue branch of their organization, Skullface and XOF just like they would eventually do to Raiden to stop Solidus. They do this not by giving missions that just say go kill Skullface and stop his parasites and Metal Gear, but through subtle manipulation and information control that leads Diamond Dogs to that conclusion themselves. Examples like the mission to kill the Soviet Commander because he's leading scorched earth attacks on the Mujahedeen turn out that he has never ordered it, we later learn it was Skullface covering his tracks on parasite tests by burning down the villages and bodies. We can then theorize that the point of the mission wasn't just killing the Soviet Commander but learning this information something that happens again we rescue Malak and that Miller himself theorizes after rescuing him. (though Miller comes to the wrong conclusion mistakenly believing it's just because Cipher wanted to silence him and not just learning about the parasites)

    33:06 why does everyone forget this moment in the game? Everyone I talk to about this game complains that BB doesn't go evil/nuclear and we still don't get to see his transformation into the villain of MG2. I was actually shocked when Superbunny Hop, one of my favorite content creators on this website, referred to Venom Snake as "saving" orphans rather than using child soldiers like the BB in MG2 as an example of VS being a "good guy". But like, in this game he pretty much says "these kids are good fighters, we should give em a shot" and it's only Kaz that protests and insists they be allowed a normal life. VS even makes fun of him for this, chiding him with the line "so what, we running a daycare center now?" At the end of the day Venom will go along with Miller, because Miller is the one who truly runs Motherbase, but if it wasn't for him he'd put those kids out on the front lines for SURE

      @@it6647 That would still be pretty horribly fucked up, and that's also exactly what Big Boss does in Metal Gear 2. He says to snake about the child soldiers in zanzibarr land: "You saw those children didn't you? Everyone of them is a victim of a war somewhere in the world, and they'll make fine soldiers in the ones to come. Star a war... fan its flames... create victims, then train them, feed them and serve them back onto the battlefield. It's a perfectly logical system."
      Even if Venom Snake wasn't actively using child soldiers in the same way that chico was used for some operations, Snake saved those kids to raise them into soldiers as soon as they were old enough. Kaz was the only reason they had even a sliver of a chance of a normal life, or at least as normal as it can be being raised by a bunch of private mercenaries who are led by two extremely angry gay dudes who are bitter because they can no longer wrestle in the showers like they used to. lol

Some have even written books on their experience and why it’s important to treat these children with the same care and attention you to would to any other child facing any other type of abuse. If you ever try writing fiction you’ll realise you can’t make anything up from nothing,
      For example if I say say something funny, your mind will go blank, because without parameters to work off you have infinity/oblivion to work with,
      Kojima would have to see real interactions, or interpret real life a certain way to write the way he does, everything in metal gear solid might be fictional, but it’s got to have been based on something true
      It gets crazier when you apply this principle to things like religions,
      Easy to see gods and religions as primitive thinking, but how would someone arrive at that conclusion and then be motivated enough to write stories about gods and spirits, and write so well that those stories endured longer than languages themselves

    Fantastic video series. I'm convinced more than ever that the game's underlying plots were deliberately designed to be easily missed and overlooked.
    People typically play MGS titles for the "big" moments in the narrative, for the lengthy cutscenes that spell out things in excruciating detail. That's what the series is known for. And while some of this does exist in MGSV, the plot is considerably murkier, again by design. The "big" moments are few and far in between. The player, much like the confused "Big Boss" we play through the game, muddles from one mission to the next, searching for a payoff the game staunchly refuses to give, and was never designed for to begin with.
    It all boils down to "Big Boss" being played from almost every angle. Even more frustrating to players is the fact that many of these details are not easily learned about during a fresh playthrough of the game. You lack interpreters, resources, and general knowledge of your objectives. Many optional objectives don't even get listed until we replay a mission, and some deal with many plot critical details that we would otherwise be completely ignorant about.
    "Big Boss" in MGSV is a victim and a pawn of people who are playing a completely different game from the rest of us. As players, we experience first hand the level of control and obfuscation that Major Zero helped engineer. We also see how it spiraled so far out of control that he sought to replace the corruptible "human factors" with AI, which influence the events of MGS2 and 4.
    What is wild about all this is that EVEN WITH the unfinished hunt for Eli taken into account, as satisfying as all that would have been, players would still have been in the dark about all of this stuff. From our allies within Mother Base, to the very mission briefings themselves, you still have a story that is written deliberately to withhold details from us. We're still pawns, and the most we can hope for are small victories here and there.

      Truth be told, I was interested in the background lore, but I am not gonna stare at the menu for hours listening to audio logs. The story of this game is interesting, but the way it is told leaves a lot to be desired.

    • @cmdrfokker
      @cmdrfokker 4 роки тому +5

      @@kabeltelevizio There are important details that aren't even in the tapes. They're in the dialogue between guards and important mission NPCs, things most players (myself absolutely included because I'm bad at this game) missed because I didn't sit around and let people talk (because I was setting off alerts and investigations left and right).

      @@cmdrfokker Expo dumps handed to the player this way is not good storytelling. The game should make sure the player actually hears these, like in Arkham games for example.

    • @cmdrfokker
      @cmdrfokker 4 роки тому +7

      @@kabeltelevizio The Arkham games aren't known for being particularly well written stories. Just because something is laid out in before the player doesn't make it great. Hell, MGS4 was more of a movie than a game at times, and it had extensive exposition dumps and cutscenes that tried to piece everything together for the player... and people still came away from it confused. Others flat out didn't like the plot outside of the pretty obvious nostalgia bait.
      This isn't to say that MGSV's approach is automatically better. But it IS a deliberate choice for the game to be presented the way it is. Kojima pretty clearly wanted players to not have every piece of information up front. He wanted players to be searching for something that wasn't going to be there. He wanted to undercut our triumphs in missions with contradictory intel and events. How many times were we sent out for a particular objective, only to find out that things weren't as they initially appeared to be in the mission briefings?

    • @kabeltelevizio
      @kabeltelevizio 4 роки тому +1

      @@cmdrfokker Please note, I didn't say good story, I said good storytelling. I think the main plot of MGSV is pretty mediocre, with one dimensional characters and very little development. But Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Borderlands2, Arkham games, Saints Row games all had very simple plots with one dimensional characters, but the way their story was told (perhaps with cutscenes, unique character moments, well written dialogue, gameplay moments etc) elevated their narrative. MGSV has some good cinematography, some nice quotes and a few good ideas here and there, but storytelling hidden behind layers of menus or spoken by soldiers we likely never meet is not good, since it's almost the equivalent of not having those storypieces at all. An argument could be made that those pieces are there for multiple playthroughs. Sure, I guess, I am not a fond of design like that, especially in games that try to emulate movies and movie narratives (like MGSV). I brought up Arkham games, because there, the dialogue of NPCs feels like something you just overhear randomIy, even though the designers place those there in a way that missing them would be very difficult. I see what you mean under deliberate vagueness, but I am not sure Kojima was striving for that, after all, you can cover up writing errors by saying, "it deliberately keeps the players in the dark". It feels a bit odd that a game so hell bent on showing big character moments through grandiose, elaborate cutscenes with music and effects is intentionally hiding a lot of important information. Maybe it's just me.

    Great video, the one thing i would add though; as other comments have said the pigs head on stakes with flies around them is a direct reference to lord of the flies. But Eli's character is also very similar as well. he's pretty much a 1;1 of Jack from the book (he's the leader, he stakes the pig's head, he's blonde). Also in a random trip back to mother base Kaz tells the boss that a boy called Ralph was killed by a falling pipe. In the book Ralph is Jack's adversary and Jack attempts to kill him multiple times, Kaz suggests later that maybe Ralph's death was the thing that kicked the uprising of kids off so it's pretty obvious Eli is at fault. Kojima references Lord of the Flies and Moby Dick a lot so i think a key to understanding MGSV are those two books

    FINALLY, someone actually analyzes the historical and colonial context of V's story! I've always been chaffed that people ignore that aspect of the story when it is CENTRAL to the game's overall themes/meaning. I'm working on my own video essay about this game that critiques it largely from a postcolonial interpretation, with emphasis on the themes of language using some of Spivak's ideas. I thought I was gonna be the first one on youtube to seriously talk about the geo-political themes the game is juggling but you beat me to it!
    I've still got some unique tricks up my sleaves however,.... if I ever get this damn project finished that is lol

      I've been working on a video that directly goes there, I've just been nervous about putting it out. Not sure people are ready to hear what this game was actually about, when it comes to stuff like the child soldiers, the proxy wars, the blood diamonds and conflict minerals, the slave trade etc. Here's wishing both of us good luck, Boss! I recommend looking into the history of the Kikongo (or Kongo) language.

    Oh my god FIFTY MINUTES? You fucking spoil us with such amounts of great content oh lord. The first MGS game I actually ever played was The Phantom Pain, and it left me with so many questions/unresolved feelings, your videos on the game series have really helped clear a lot of it up as well as make me look at it in a bigger picture in its reflections of our real world.
