    Cloud Imperium Games has been talking about it for Star Citizen since the beginning, it was one of their stretch goals, & they have people ready & willing to implement VR into the biggest most ambitious game ever attempted. Is it feasible tho??

    I can explain how the vignette works. Motion sickness happens when your eyes and ears/balance are not perceiving motion in the exact same way. This makes the body thinks that you are hallucinating because of a poison and will make you nauseous in hopes of throwing up the poison. The vignette is serving as a point of reference for our eyes to perceive less motion. It's like the difference in viewing the speed of a car from the hood vs from the driver seat. SC can actually pull this effect off immersively if they have a different HUD for VR and also have the interior of the helmet show

    • @grandtheftex4852
      @grandtheftex4852 Місяць тому

      Its not because the body thinks you're hallucinating or poisoned. The human body is not sentient, it doesn't comprehend nuances, it simply responds to stimuli. A foreign body in the stomach causes the stomach to respond by dispatching its contents, it doesn't know why, it just does as its programmed to do. Likewise your body is rigged to understand that its own motion and the signals that your eyes pick up should align, when they don't the brain becomes confused. It has nothing to do with poison.

    I also found Elite through VR and it BLEW. MY. MIND. I was happy with just running data missions because I was actually flying a space ship through the Milky Way galaxy. It ignited my love for space and Sci Fi. I still play Elite to this day for the experience that just cannot be matched by anything else on the market. SC in VR would be cool but it would need a massive rig to run it. In the infamous words of cmdr Exigeous - Elite on a monitor is a great space game... In VR, you are flying a FKNG SPACE SHIP!

CIG also need to take notes from the recently departed Echo Arena and of course Lone Echo, those games did zero gravity maneuvering so well I still get impressed after having played them for years. Having had the chance to try Star Citizen in VR many, many years ago before it was removed (back when it was just the hangar module), seeing my constellation in VR blew my mind and has since been a feature which I'm waiting for to return. I only had the "Oculus Rift Dev Kit 1" at the time, so no motion controls and abysmal resolution, but despite that, although Star Citizen's ships already show off scale very well, the sheer scale of ships truly came to life for me that day I seen them in VR. Cannot wait for the day I get to check out the Reclaimer in VR, or even check out the enormous doors of the Hercules open up, I imagine it'll be like watching the nearby ferry open up for vehicles.

      I played this very simple looking vr flight sim called Ultrawings that really did this right but sitting there holding virtual controls you cannot rest your hands on got tiresome. For SC being able to holster the hand controls and using hotas/hosas would be nice. For full immersion you would want to have the same sticks in game as IRL like Tinkerpilot does, but I don't think SC will ever go that far.

      This is really how it needs to be approached in VR. Schemes which figure on still using mouse and keyboard or whatever with a zillion key bindings are non-starters in VR. You need controls that actually take advantage of VR and do things in a VR way. And this happens, not by accident, to mirror how how humans interact with controls in a real cockpit in RL.
      For best example I've ever seen of how a VR cockpit is done, see VTOL VR. This flight simulator features complex controls and very capable flight sticks which are all 100% virtual.

    Welcome back Dig. If CIG implements VR, they need to go all in! Not just the combat and exploration stuff, but the social aspect too (with full body tracking included). There are several social spaces perfect for VR: the Stormwal garden at Orison, the bar at New Babbage and the food stalls at Area 18. Only Hurston is lacking a really good space but the Central Business District may suit some. Now I just need to gather the funds for all the VR gear! Thanks for the great video Dig.

      Honestly I don't really see FBT being that big a *thing* in a VR enabled Star Citizen.
      It might have combat value, but the ability to *literally* sweep the leg would bring unfair advantages to VR players. SC's aimed at being as level a playing field as possible. hence things like Enhanced Stick Perception. This is on top of the issues facing balancing gunplay (Payday 2 is an example where flat and VR players need to mesh. And while co-op, I'm FAR more effective in VR with most of the weapons I've tested).
      As for the social side of things... 95% of the FBT users are in VRChat, and that's for a reason. FBT is allowed in the TOS of that game (and it's even actively developed for), but a *significant* chunk of what folks actually DO with that FBT definitely isn't allowed and the devs actively ignore it (especially for certain groups). I don't see CIG wanting to wade into that dumpster-fire of degeneracy.
      Though if they do, I hope Dismemberment comes along as well. Mainly so that I may bathe in the glorious rain of giblets brought forth by my GP-33 being mag-dumped into the first cuddlepile I come across. Sweet lordy did I want to do that the one time I visitied the Black Cat....

    • @Irritated_Considerably
      @Irritated_Considerably Рік тому +2

      @@DFX2KX If CIG want SC to be the *everything game*, adding VR requires they go the whole hog, not just focus on the combat aspect but allow folks to socialise in cities if they wish. I agree, VR gatherings elsewhere would be inadvisable, for the reason you stated.
      You are also assuming that all the FBT crowd would be attracted to SC and stay. This I doubt very much as SC is too real but for existing SC players into VR and those that discover SC from VR? That would make sense to CIG: More money!
      SC will continue to be balanced as different things are added, VR would be no different. If VR players could leg sweep, the rest of us would get a leg sweep Keybinding, which sounds like a win to me (and more advantageous than VR).
      Change is good my friend and not everyone sees things the same way, and that's ok. ✌🙂

    As others have said another way to control the game is to use a voice recognition app. I use voice attack for elite dangerous and it works really good. I use a game controller and mouse for steering the ship and moving around on foot but pretty much everything else is done with voice attack. I too am looking forward to star citizen in VR as I was blown away in elite dangerous in VR. It really puts you inside the game and your ship instead of looking at a flat screen of it. And your situational awareness in a dogfight is amazing. Thank you for this video and I am now subscribed to you channel.

    Ok so i think you are absolutely right with everything you said. For vr to be implemented into sc, it has to be in such a state, that you have full (i mean FULL) control over your character. So actually working and affordable treadmills, haptic and force feedback gloves and a really small, high fov, high resolution headsets. Then you would be able to press buttons in the cockpit, run around, etc. Thats where vr tech has to get to make it good for seamless crossplay with high quality games like sc

      Like I said, there are people me included that ALREADY play SC if VR, and we do it with KBM when is FPS. We fly with Hotas. It does not HAVE to be at peak VR 2.0. VR 1.5 with stick locomotion will work, but you will have a small percentage of people who just can't play because of sea-sickness issues. Most people can get VR legs after a week or so. I was lucky; I had ZERO issues from day 1 ( I also have zero sea-sickness). Most people are fine with something like a Quest 2 for size and comfort, but Quest 3 is coming out so that will work. Like I said, there are people me included that ALREADY play SC if VR with WAY less than VR 2.0, which is not there yet. Coming FAST though. I would say less than 5 years.

First time you try VR, it's like you've been experiencing the world while looking out through a letterbox and then you switch on those sweet full 360 degrees!
    SC is getting in the ballpark of being workable for VR. With vulkan, they should be able to put real quality sliders in for many of the visuals that limit frame rate the hardest. VR adds so much that reducing the quality is a fair tradeoff to get more acceptable frame rates

    My SC VR Wishlist:
    1. Full body model/tracking. No dumb floating hands. i want to see my gear and armor when i look down.
    2. The vr headset needs to be wireless. unfortunately the options are limited on this one with Quest 2/3 being the only realistically affordable wireless vr headset on the market right now. and the graphical fidelity of the quests just aren't ready for star citizen yet.
    3. Full smooth locomotion/turning. i cannot stand snappy locomotion like teleport and degree turning. (im sorry everyone who gets motion sickness but if we can only get one type of locomotion, it needs to be smooth for realism and immersion.)
    4. realistic physics and interactions, such as weapon handling/reloading, throwing, item pick ups, etc.
    5. individual finger tracking (for controllers that support this. some controllers have the ability to track if your fingers are touching parts of the controller to determine whether or not that finger is extended or curled)
    Also VR means you can streamline keybinds to more contextual situations. Like normally you have buttons dedicated to various equipment and weapons you are carrying. All that gets simplified when you can just look down, see a grenade attached to your chest, grab the grenade with the grab button. physically grab and pull the pin out and throw it. you dont need a keybind for inspecting objects because you literally can inspect any item by physically moving the object towards your face to inspect it. To customize weapons you can bring the weapon up like you are inspecting it and grabbing the attachments off of the weapon. emotes dont have to have keybinds or inner thoughts because you could actually perform the emote yourself. So the idea that SC would be hard to add vr support due to the many different keybinds is not a valid concern because many of the inputs/actions would come naturally as actual physical actions you perform, using just the grab button, the trigger, and the few other misc buttons that are available on the handtracking controllers. Same is applied with ships. the cockpit of ships already seem like they were designed with VR in mind as they actually have physical buttons that you can interact with, on screen as opposed to using keybinds. So manipulating the power triangle, shields, engaging/disengaging quantum drive, landing gears, etc. can all be done by reaching over and actually physically activating the button in VR space.

    VKB Gladiator Evos are great for dual stick I use those. I have the left one with the canted stick and removed the forward/back spring and tightened the dryclutch on it so it acts like a throttle for accelerating but like a joystick for the left and right thrust since it recenters left/right but not forward/back. Works great with the predator mounts.

    I used VorpX to play Star Citizen in VR, until Easy Anti Cheat broke it. It worked fine, not the true 3D effect, but it worked. Looking around while flying a ship was magical, I used my Thrust Master HOTAS, and walking around while seated IRL was awesome, had to peak at the keyboard once in a while, I have a lighted RGB keyboard so I colored the keys for quick reference. I played this way for a few years, but since VorpX stopped working for it I hardly play SC much, spoiled I guess. I hope they allow VR support soon, It was amazing to stand on the landing pad of a station and look around at the scale of everything. Good video, keep up the good work, thanx.

      @@DigThat32 It's a little odd, but it basically turns your controllers/hands into a throttle and stick.
      With Index controllers specifically, it's really quite nice. Wherever your hands are, the second you close your grip, they basically act as if your left hand is on the throttle, and your right the joystick.
      That way you can close your left hand, and move it forward just a little, then release said hand, and the throttle will stay set wherever you had left it.
      Next time you close your left hand, it will pick up from the same spot, even if your hand is physically in a different spot irl.
      The joystick for the right hand defaults back to the 0 position whenever you let go. I find this one more useful to actually prop the index controller on my thigh, as if it was an actual flight stick.
      Meanwhile the thumbsricks on the controllers become directional controls on radial menus to control aircraft functions. Push a direction to select an option, then pull the trigger to activate it.
      If you are trying to take off from an aircraft carrier, it is usually wise to, first, close your canopy.
      Then activate the hook system.
      Gently throttle up and position the jet on one of the launch slings.
      Then throttle full, and hit the launch toggle from one of the radials. Can't remember the exact name of it.
      Great fun though, and I hope your explorations of it go well.

  • @ImmersiveGamer83

    The fact that the characters interact in realistic ways is so you can interact the same in VR. You will have option for touch controllers. You will hold guns and when out of the ship it will control like Pavlov or contractors VR and when you engage with buttons you literally touch them with your real hands. If you have hotas when you get in either put down and use hotas or if no hotas use touch to control the ships like no man's sky VR or VTOL VR.
    Single button reloads would be acceptable ala fallout VR ( this is most likely as 1 dev in spare time) but if they gone this far then should go whole hog and have manual reloads too and this and squadron 42 could indeed be a VR system seller. Star Citizen in VR will be wild.

    They should implement flight sim style (in cockpit) control schemes for a VR port, where you reach over and touch the buttons when you need to. This would eliminate the need for 30 key bindings and a keyboard/ game pad. Don’t make the setup too difficult! That’s what the Quest 2 is showing

  • @danlowe
    @danlowe 11 місяців тому

    The program reWASD can map buttons on multiple controllers to one 'virtual' controller so you can hold more than one controller or use a controller and a mouse, two VR controllers, etc. Also has macros and button combinations so you can hold one button for context before pressing another and it will be a different control than if pressed alone. Like FFXIV on a controller. Can even try two of those VR controllers from the ps3/4 era for under $10 and map them together. (This also means multiple people sitting around can crew one ship using multiple inputs.) Just a lot of options. And you might be over Elite but I recommend turning flight assist off and making one button toggle on button hold. So you're normally in flight assist off Newtonian physics but can hold the button whenever you want to reorient. Wish those games knew how to do more than combat and freight service though.

    I tried to use the VR hack for Star Citizen when I first started 4 months ago. It took a while to align everything, and required darkening from Reshade, but just for flying it was very solid.
    I need to go through it again because I was very new and didn't know the game well, nor did I have my VKBs, but I have to go jump in again and fly on Daymar.
    A big issue though since it's just putting a flat screen in front of your face, is depth perception as you mentioned. Not fun for walking around but it works for flying got some reason. I tried racing and it was VERY intense fun, but nausea inducing. Worth it though.

    The biggest challenge for bringing this game into VR is that the game has already been designed and developed as a flat game from the ground up. If it was designed for VR, many aspects of game play would have worked completely differently at a fundamental level.
    Trying to retrofit VR into it now imagines trying to shoehorn VR into a fundamentally flat-centric design. When you're talking about needing to use many key bindings, keyboard and mouse, hotas with buttons sticking out of every orifice, and trying to work these things into VR somehow... that's a completely backwards and anachronistic approach to how to bring the game into VR. And it stems from the flat controls being fundamental and fully interwoven into the very fabric of every aspect of the game.
    I'm skeptical that it will ever be possible to overcome this hurdle. What you'll end up with for "VR support" is just viewing the game in a VR headset, but otherwise controlling it and playing it as purely a flat game. Reducing the VR headset to just being a 3D monitor strapped to your face and not really VR.
    Real VR support would use the motion controllers only and would redesign all of the experiences in the game to work this way naturally. And it would more or less require significantly redesigning the whole game right down to some of its fundamentals. It would just about make it a different game from its flat counterpart.
