    I have to disagree in part about the antivirus myth. There are several antivirus programs that behave well, but there are some that are absolutely system killers.

    • @LironSegev
      @LironSegev  5 місяців тому +25

      of course. If you pick a no-name-brand one that is free and harvests your data its not going to behave like one from a reputable company who spend millions into making sure it doesn't intefere with your system.

      Defragging SSD only make sense in one case, that is when you sure that you will not be modifying the content of the SSD afterward, but even then the benefit are too small to be humanly noticeable.
      What are that hardly noticeable benefit? the OS will issue less commands to the SSD in order to read files that are defragmented compared to more multiple commands queue for the same files but more fragmented.

    The thing about antivirus slowing down a computer might be coming from those ones who tried a "security suite" like Norton or something similar. I remember having tried one of those way back in the early 2000s and back then CPUs were mostly single core still. Also they really did slow down computers a lot since they were not only single core but didn't have a ton of RAM like they could these days. I still don't run those extra security suites these days. I just have a bad impression of them and don't recommend them at all. Antivirus can still slow down a computer if you get one that is poorly written.

    • @Psy500
      @Psy500 5 місяців тому

      On Linux it is in the event you remove while it is writing meta data to the file system and I assume it is the same for Windows, for example it gets into a state where what the filesystem says is different from what is actually on the device though this can easily be fixed by demounting the filesystem and repairing it.

      Similarly, for several years I had occasional problems where LibreOffice refused to let go of a file. Had to shut down the PC at least a few times to get LO to release. Since there's been no recent events I wonder if they solved it. Other software has had this glitch as well, but it was many years back. However, glitches like this should only mess with the associated file(s), not the thumb drive (?). Not ready to test hot removal after an LO session yet, but considering it.

    One another myth:
    Older systems are more likely to be hacked because they no more supported by soft dev.
    Seems legit, but...
    Hackers know, that most people and companies run new systems and they focus on them. They are not interested in old systems, as there is much lower probability to find such a system around.
    Wonna example? Here you go..
    I have Flipper Zero. It has a great functionality of BadUSB by USB port or Bluetooth. Wonderfull toy.
    The point is it DOESN'T work on Windows 7 :) but works wonderfully on Windows 10&11 :)
    With Win7 my old laptop is secured :) while newest ones do whatever Flipper (or any BadUSBs) tell them to do :)

      If its an old computer, shutting down is probably a good idea but if its a newer computer, they tend to have great power management and you can set them to go into sleep mode after not being used for x number of minutes. I leave mine on all the time as at night I have my updates happening and my backup going and my computer is connected to the UPS so I am not too worried about power surges. There is nothing wrong with switching off the computer either. So its a personal prefrence.

      If it's an hard drive, that's the issue number one.
      Number two is your search indexer service, disable asap.
      Number three is your page file and swap file. If you don't do super intensive tasks and get to 100% RAM frequently, you don't need either of those, you can also disable them.
      Also tip for making a HDD system faster, turn off/on and reboot as less as possible.
      Reboot for windows updates, turn back off and on in emergency situations, for everything else, always hybernate your system when you stop using the pc for the day or you leave it for a break.
      Resuming your complete session with programs already opened and loaded on your workflow will take like 1-2 minutes from pressing the power button, instead of staring for 5 minutes at your desktop after logging in the user and waiting for the taskbar to appear and become responsive after a reboot ,and then having to reopen all programs (even just firefox with a couple of tabs can take a full minute or two) and resume your work.
      Source: was a Win 10 HDD laptop (6th gen i5 U processor) user until last year.

    Installing programs/data in C (or any drive having the OS) slows down the pc.......fact or myth?

    • @LironSegev
      @LironSegev  5 місяців тому +1

      Myth. From a performance point of view there is nothing wrong with installing everything to the C drive where the OS is. The problem is only when you run out of space on the hard drive and then performance suffers.
      From a security point of view, it used to be safer to install the OS on the C drive and everything else on the D drive so if you got hit by a virus it wouldn't take out the data. That is no longer the case as viruses go through all your drives so it doesnt really matter.

    Is it true that Windows is less safe than Mac OS when it comes to viruses?

    • @LironSegev
      @LironSegev  5 місяців тому +2

      Malware writers go after what is used the most and Windows computers are used more than Mac across the globe. So they are more of a target but with the right protection they are not less safe than a Mac (who btw is also getting attacked so they are no longer the untouchables like they used to be)

    You sir are absolutely Wrong about the slowdown of your system with antivirus! Avast! Macafee and the list goes on! They take up so much resources and slows down your computer! I take care of a few computers and are constantly slowing down! Only two years ago at the airport we were amazed by the airport using windows 2000 locked up on the home screen with the crash prompt right down the middle. We wondered what they have running the plane, probably why the planes are always delayed, running antivirus! 😂

    • @LironSegev
      @LironSegev  4 місяці тому

      If you have an old computer and low ram then of course it will slow down your system. If you have any decent computer with enough ram you won't feel it. It's like me saying it's great we can do 60mph and you say wrong! My horse can't do that😆

    I disagree on the antivirus part. First of all, as strange at it is, you can still buy new computers with 4 gb ram. Don't ask me why. Antivirus software are a bad idea even with 8, let alone 4.
    Second of all, it depends what you do with your computer. I have 32 gb ram, but when I'm video editing, which uses a lot of ram, I don't need an antivirus slowing my system down, fighting for memory with Adobe or Avid.
    Truth be told, if you're moderately tech savvy and know how to stay safe, Windows Defender is enough cause it no longer sucks as it did in the olden days. I haven't used third party antivirus software in years and I'm fine.

    • @LironSegev
      @LironSegev  5 місяців тому

      Obviously, if you have a PC running an old processor with 4 GB RAM then everything will be slow - not just the anti-virus.
      Its like me saying: Its great that we can travel 60 MPH down the freeway, and you say: Disagree, some people ride a horse and buggy so it's not true.
      And yes, Defender is great and it has come a long way from being a memory eater to working much better within the Ram.
