- 🎢Gelmerbahn, the steepest open funicular in Europe with a 106% gradient, will take you to Lake Gelmer (1850 m above sea level). Helmersee is the starting point for hiking and mountain tours.
The Gelmerbahn lower station is easily accessible both by car and by post bus (bus stop: Handegg, Gelmerbahn). The station is located in Khandegg, right on the road to the Grimsel Pass.
OPERATING HOURS
June, September, October: 9.00 a.m. - 4.00 p.m. (last ascent 3.48 p.m., last descent 4.00 p.m.)
July, August: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. (last ascent 4:36 p.m., last descent 4:48 p.m.)
PRICES
Adults return CHF 36 / one-way CHF 18
Children 6-15 years return CHF 18.- / one-way CHF 9.-
💡INTERESTING
Gelmerbahn ranks second among the steepest cable cars in the world. First place narrowly belongs to the Scenic Railaway cable car in Australia (128%).
However, given the fact that Helmerbahn passengers ascend to the dam in a completely open car, shaped like a large red staircase and without a roof, protected from falling by a single crossbar, suggests that the Swiss cable car offers a much more refined experience.

Not saying it matters what I was expecting was to see a real Roller Coaster through the mountains imagine that. I have always wanted to see one that would be the ultimate thrill one that goes out on the edge of the mountain and down imagine that. Not that I would go on it. Just always had this idea since I was a kid to build one on a mountain and through a mountain.

I was expecting an actual roller coaster. That is more like a tram. Just hate to see what happens if the brakes gave out on that. But the view is awesome and the lake is really nice too.

Absolutely fantastic! This is an inclined railway, or funicular, built in 1926 to facilitate transporting building materials to & from the construction of the Gelmersee Reservoir. It uses a cable to ascend and descend, run by an electric motor. Opened to the public in 2001. The oldest, The Reisszug at Hohensalzburg Castle at Salzburg, Austria, still operates & dates from 1495 or 1504! Accurate date unknown. To end the tired argument below, from a wooden roller coaster hobbyist & historian (me); Inclined Railways, or Funiculars, do not coast, therefore they are not roller coasters by technical definition.

I think they misunderstood the concept of what a rollercoaster is actually supposed to do. That is just a little tourist train. Taking people up-and-down a mountain, not a roller coaster. Very, very beautiful scenery, thank you.

TECHNICALLY, it's US ..we have the issue with the word. It is a roller (mechanics) coaster (it is coasting) and it's on a mountain. So, let's just appreciate what it is without the need for correction. Ay

Switzerland is truly incredible.
I’ve been fortunate to have travelled to both Switzerland and Scotland and loved the scenery in both, though the Swiss mountains are definitely higher and more “spectacular”. However, I REALLY loved the views and atmosphere in the Scottish highlands and have found nothing which compares.
Have you driven up - or down - the Cattle Pass and also to Kinlochewe? Stunning views, as are those in Norway, especially around Geirangerfjord.
Agreed, as someone from the UK when I visit Germany / Austria / Switzerland I'm always captivated by how gorgeous the nature is.

Absolutely breathtaking! That lake is incredibly beautiful, I never saw anything like it! I myself couldn’t ride the tram as I’m terrified of heights. When I was little the Ferris wheel I was riding stopped and I was at the top. It began falling apart and fireman had to carry us down. Thank you for sharing this wonderful video with us! ❤️

When I was just 5yrs old, I fell off a 18-20 ft cliff. Suffered a mild concussion and that was it. But needless to say I developed an intense fear of heigth8. Even though while sitting in bed and feeling like I'm falling off the bed,dizzy, whole 9yards...IT'S BEAUTIFUL!
Oh, this is very sad, I sympathize, I fell down a slide in kindergarten as a child, but my memory was erased somehow and now I’m not so afraid of heights, rather I can calm myself down. Thanks for sharing! 🩷

Beautiful. My favourite Swiss funicular is the Neisenbahn which takes you to the top of Mt Neisen in the Bernese Oberland. The view from the top, well it’s the most amazing view I’ve ever seen. I didn’t want to come down. Any plans to do that one with your camera?
