- 🎢Gelmerbahn, the steepest open funicular in Europe with a 106% gradient, will take you to Lake Gelmer (1850 m above sea level). Helmersee is the starting point for hiking and mountain tours.
The Gelmerbahn lower station is easily accessible both by car and by post bus (bus stop: Handegg, Gelmerbahn). The station is located in Khandegg, right on the road to the Grimsel Pass.
OPERATING HOURS
June, September, October: 9.00 a.m. - 4.00 p.m. (last ascent 3.48 p.m., last descent 4.00 p.m.)
July, August: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. (last ascent 4:36 p.m., last descent 4:48 p.m.)
PRICES
Adults return CHF 36 / one-way CHF 18
Children 6-15 years return CHF 18.- / one-way CHF 9.-
📌INTERESTING
Gelmerbahn ranks second among the steepest cable cars in the world. First place narrowly belongs to the Scenic Railaway cable car in Australia (128%).
However, given the fact that Helmerbahn passengers ascend to the dam in a completely open car, shaped like a large red staircase and without a roof, protected from falling by a single crossbar, suggests that the Swiss cable car offers a much more refined experience.

I finally visited Switzerland. Was there for 5 weeks. Did heaps of funiculars, St Moritz, Glacier 3000, Gornergrat Bahn (my favorite thing i did there) & heaps more including beautiful village Morcote. Gelmerbahn was best funicular, better than Stoosbahn! PS;I sat at back in carrige, not many people on my ride.

@@a-travelvideo Yeah, it’s very steep & on edge of mountain. I had a bit of confidence when i saw 3 elderly people getting on, they didn’t seem nervous at all, maybe they didn’t know what was ahead or maybe their medication was making them feel a bit too good, haha! I sat behind them haha, at back.

Does it stay closed till May ? I researched and found in one of Switzerland sites that this ride opens only after June
Yes, the schedule on the website is correct and the pass is closed in winter and spring.

Often Funiculars use a matching train on a parallel track. How does this Funicular derive power to lift the train?

@@a-travelvideo This is the first one I've seen that needs power. On the parallel track Funicular, the train going down is a little bit heavier so it pulls the lighter train up hill.
There is an ancient one where the water from a natural spring fills a canister on the train going down making it heavier. Upon arrival at the bottom, the water is released.
