- Tokyo Highway is the board game of privatized highway systems - and if that doesn't sound fun, you need to WAKE UP. In Tokyo Highway, players take turns placing popsicle stick highways and try to get all their cars on the road. But they only have so many pieces, and once they run out, it's game over. This week on Polygon's tabletop show Overboard, Clayton Ashley, Tara Long, XTina GG and Simone de Rochefort take to the streets, building roads with shaky hands.

This game would be much prettier if each player had their own color instead of everyone being gray.
Was thinking the same but it makes it more difficult to swap pieces. Someone will have a solution like a colour wheel or a dry erase marker
At least the columns could be colored. To help the players know their highways
@@LS-jj4sythose are also traded but there could just be like 15 blue but you only use 10 so instead of trading you take one of the extra and the other player just loses one, could make it harder though especially with varying numbers of players
the game looks complicated to an onlooker, but that's because you're not *thinking it* like the players are. spatial awareness and memory are engaged for them and so it's less confusing, and i think the stuff they can't remember is meant to make the challenge of rebuilding their mistakes funnier
It would probably work better digitally, where pieces could just change colors. However, that also would probably remove the whole 'accidentally knocking over pieces' thing, meaning they wouldnt change color in the first place...
So happy with the regular return of Overboard!

Simone's anxiety rubbing off onto everyone else is both something relatable and something very very funny
I wasn't feeling the game just based on the description, BUT once you all started putting pieces down, it started feeling like a mixture of Jenga, Pick-Up Sticks, and lining up Domino pieces-- I had my knuckles at my mouth in nervousness!
Less than 20 minutes in and Simone has already morphed into a hunched-up goblin, looking at the "normal people" at their "table" with a mix of awe and terror. Is that what privatized highways do to people?
The video being extremely stressful to watch but the music being some chill jazz and then lofi beats was an excellent editing choice!

On the one hand, I sometimes tremble so much when even a bit nervous people think I have an issue. On the other hand... I also have that problem. That's why I enjoyed watching Tina play.

Awww, wanted Clayton to win but the way everybody (especially poor Simone and Tina) were losing their minds meant we’re the real winners. 😂
Clayton should actually have won the game. According to the rules, every player should have placed one of their cars on the starting stick. But who cares, it was a funny experience all along.

Apparently you can also run your new bridge UNDER other bridges and place a car if there hasn't been one crossed below the opponent's highway yet too.

In this episode of overboard, we learn that cartels are the most effective means of profiting from a for profit transportation system.
I remember being at Gen Con and seeing a giant version of this game being played with the road sticks being three feet long. It stuck in my mind for over five years until I built a giant version for myself at home. Yard parties and BBQs are so much better when the games are giant! So great to see one of my favorite games being played!

I think you made a rules mistake. As I understand it, you're only supposed to give columns for every column, road or car knocked. You don't give roads.
True, though that makes less sense in-universe and the rulebook I found online could have clarified better.
