  • In this video I will show you my process for retracting the electronic parking brake (EPB) using standard tools - no special tools needed. This is not the recommended procedure for putting this caliper in service mode, so be aware that this is a work-around if youre like me and don't have the capability to access the vehicles computer.
    I will be posting the full brake service videos in the next two videos, so stay tuned for those. Please let me know if you have any questions in the comment section below!

    Thank you for the vid. One thing to note, when I went to reattach the ebrake actuator to the caliper, it cracked and actually separated a little bit at the plastic seam. Turned out to be that the male/female didn't quite seat correctly so I needed to play with it and rotate the female part counter clockwise ever so slightly so it would seat right. After that it went on nice and flush. Ebrake still works as normal, my only concern is some dust/particles getting into the tiny crack in the plastic housing. Too lazy to buy a new one and replace, guess we'll find out how long it lasts.

    Those screwdrivers are made to put a deep socket on the end instead of visgrips. Took me a couple yrs to realize that neat feature most over look.

    I did this on a 2015 Tiguan VW with a 9 volt battery and two wire leads. When doing it watch the piston to see if it moves forward. If so STOP switch the contact points and you’ll hear the small motor retract but won’t see it, you have to push the piston back in and you are done. This way you don’t remove the cap only disconnect the plug.

    Great video! Do you need to calibrate the brakes once the pads are installed? My P is not holding the car with parking brakes ON and car switched off and Neutral gear. The only thing that holds my car is the P gear and I am afraid that might be damaged if breaks are not holding as well. My car is F07 2013 530dx

    Same procedure for E89 Z4. I just needed to be sure of what Torx bit to retract it with. T45 seems to be the same everywhere. Entire back end of my car is dead due to flood. Had to do this just to roll it off the trailer. Now I need to figure out how to get into the trunk so I can start replacing modules.

    Thanks much for the video. Wonder if the same procedure will work for 2020 G05 (standard non-M brakes). Some bimmerpost users reported software is required to retract the piston. Otherwise, EPB error will pop up. Try to gather as much information as I can for this rear brake pad/rotor replacement DIY project. But unfortunately, not G05 youtube instruction found yet.

    Following this method only when I go back to put the ebrake housing it doesn't sit flush. Do I need to force it or should it sit in rather easy?

  • @JSarmiento.
    @JSarmiento. 3 роки тому +5

    BMW TIS states that the ebrake piston should not be retracted all the way. If it does, it will throw an error code. For those without a way to clear it, you will have problems. It has to be retracted enough to accommodate need pads and discs only...

    question please if you are able to answer thanks, I have a 2021 ram 1500 crew cab truck and recently the electric parking brake stopped working with a flashing yellow P symbol along with a flashing Brake light, I have a code scanner and it sad bad left rear electric parking brake module, also took it to the local parts store and they used their scanner on it and said the same thing, I bought a new electric parking brake module, am going to attempt to change it, only 2 Torque screws holding it on, the brakes would not retract for service as long as this error is present, I just want to replace the electric parking brake module, the parking brakes are not stuck, or engaged, they are working freely, vehicle is driving freely no problems there, just the parking brake will not work as long as this error. I have a brake hose though that is in front of the screw on the left side of the module that I would need to disconnect and pull to the side to get access to the screw, if I disconnect the brake line I am assuming fluid will leak out, will I need to retract these brakes like you are showing if I only want to change the electric parking brake module ? how much fluid do you think would be lost if I have to disconnect the brake line? it is in the way of the screw on the left side of the parking brake module, thanks for your help or anyone else who wants to comment

    Hey thanks for making this video. a couple questions from when I was working on a 2018 X3 and ran into a couple issues.
    When retracting the parking brake, I got it all the way to the end stop, but the piston wouldnt retract in when using a c-clamp. I thought it might have been due to the parking brake not fully retracted so i tried rotating it fully counterclockwise, then clockwise again. When that happened, the torx bit on the caliper side was able to spin more and now doesnt hit an end stop.
    The piston also came out of the dust boot and I was leaking brake fluid ( I messed up somehow, trying to figure out exactly where or how). I ordered a new dust boot and plan to rebuild and bleed the system.
    My questions are, is the park brake destroyed to where I need to buy a new one or can i somehow tighten the nut on the threaded portion behind the piston to repair it?
    How can I get the piston to fully retract afterwards so I can get the pads in? Should I open up the bleeder valve to release some pressure in the system?
    This is the first BMW i've worked on. Other cars i've replaced pads and rotors for didnt have this kind of system.

    screwdrivers are usually designed to be able to use a wrench on them, either a hex around the shank or something built into the handle like these. No need to use vice grips
