- If you get a electronic parking brake failure and the brake is locked so the car cannot move you can use the emergency release to manually release the brake so you can drive.

Thanks. Saved my friend’s heap of shit X5 from blocking my driveway. The pin is on the same side on a left hand drive model. It’s worth letting people know that you have to apply some force until you hear the loud release of the brake.

Worked a treat! Need to pull the cable up sharply and the vehicle slumps slightly when it’s done. Needed a few taps of the hammer to pull cable up fully

Hi just checked out your video, my beamer stopped because the hand brake stuck on. Was wondering if yours made a shocker of a noise when you went to turn it off. My car is still stuck where it stopped, thankfully it is in a lockable yard.

I have a 2009 X6. I tried to reset first (no tool). It worked for me!
NOTE, still e70, 2013 build the tool is gone and the nut has a pull loop! Same spot in USA model, left hand side of trunk but no tool needed. YOUR VIDEO HELPED ME SO MUCH!!

How hard did you have the pull on the loop to release the brakes?
I had this issue since I bought an 09 plate, got is done on warranty and 2 weeks later had the same issue and had it for 6 months on and off while disputing the warranty. Wondering if it’s a fuse or connection issue as it’s intermittent

So if the light is on and orange, but the parking brake doesn’t work. Should I reset it? Will that make the issue happen again?
To those of you that have the manual release pull pin are lucky. Newer BMW models do not have a manual release for parking brake at least for my x5. I hear the method is to cut the cable to the bad parking brake actuator this will release the parking brake.
Hi ! Do you know where the cable is located ? I have a 2015 BMW X4 and i don’t think I have a manual release pin. I looked all over for it in my truck can’t find it. Now I’m stuck!

Hello first make sure there is no release button, the cables are not cheap it should have a red looking plastic key looking thing in the trunk unusually in the emergency compartment in the trunk. If not, so the cable is actually located under the vehicle, under the trunk area. One cable will be going to each rear wheel.
However on the x4 I do not believe you have a cable, I believe your parking brake actuators are located on each wheel. Making this problem a pain in the u know what. If so you would have to remove the wheels if you don’t have enough access to it and use a tool to manually release it.
You can try to remove the fuse wait a few minutes and put the fuse back in. Sometime this will release the parking brake if you are lucky if it does don’t engage the emergency brake until you get it fixed.
@@Brandon-cl5mr Thank you so much. I believe the same as you that the actuators have to be replaced. I don’t see a release button and don’t have a red tool in my truck. However, I am not the first owner so it could have been removed. Do you know if the X4 has a manual release button? Thank you so much for your help with this.

Had this issue as I was taking my 2008 x5 for its mot. Garage phoned 15 minutes later informing me that the car won't release the parking brake and I had the orange parking brake warning light on. The car also randomly screeched underneath as if something was malfunctioning whilst stationary and engine off. Tried the emergency release, this clicked and released, tried the reset but no joy. Warning light still on, can't get mot done. Car is going in to the garage to be diagnosed, suspected actuator issue??

@munchmuffin5033 it ended up being a faulty parking brake module. Quoted over £2k to repair.i returned the car to the garage and swapped for another car. I missed the x5 so purchased back once it was repaired

Yep left hand side and it definitely saved the day. Tow truck driver was about to quit and say there was nothing they could do. Probably makes repo-ing this car without keys turning the car on impossible without this knowledge.
should keep the car running while reseting the button ? or should i keep it on ignition only ?

Any idea for 520d, I cannot find the red stick. Neither the button to release hand brake manually.
There must be a manual release somewhere for the handbrake the on the other side of car. For example mine was in the back on the passenger side. Check the drivers side in the boot

Seems motor which pulls cables is just under the spare tire.
+supermasterPIK hey. If there is a mechanical failure the control unit which contains the Motor will need to be replaced.
However if it's a software issue as on the Bmws then try and locate the fuse for the system and give it shot.

I've tried this video and the other as well and it doesn't work. Called the RAC and they couldn't do anything as well (he tried for 45mins). Back wheels are locked. Is this the actuator gone?
+Michael Jaghra thats bad!!! the emergency release should always works. Maybe the calipers were jammed. not good
@@DawgWillFixIT Or maybe he didn't pull far enough. I tugged, thought it was released when it came a good way. Then tried again with a little more tug and it moved about a full inch or two further AND you can audibly hear the mechanism release.
i have a problem with X6... and the same issue. emergency releace also not working. what can I do.

Need your help. I accidentally engaged the parking brake with the left rotor/disc removed. I heard a loud hiss and the 'parking brake failed' message appeared. The drum semi-circular brake pads look over-extended by a few mm and they do not retract anymore using the e-brake button. I tried yanking the manual release wire using the red tool, and it extends 8-10 cm roughly with minimal effort. Do you think I should try yanking past the effortless point? What should I be looking for? Will there be a click or something? Should the engine or the ignition be turned ON or can the car be completely OFF?

Did you find anything I have the same problem but I have both disk brakes and it made a hissing noise when car was stationary and not running?

Did you just yank the emergency e-brake release cause my release thing won’t go any further and is stuck at work
@@munchmuffin5033 oh yes. I pulled with minimal force until it stopped. That was about 7 or 8 cm. Then I was scared to pull any further. After reading more on the subject I decided to pull further. So I pulled past the previous stopping point and it gave way. I heard a locking mechanism being released and my brakes were back to normal again.
@@munchmuffin5033 we used a computer to reset the parking brake after that. Using the manual release separates the lock inside the actuator which needs to be brought back into position.

+TeAna O that sounds like my issue. Try the fuse and see If it resets the brake and warning light. If not you will need to get it checked

+Paul Gheorghe Lol if the parking brake fails locked. Then you can use the emergency release to move the car. The parking brake has nothing to do with slowing the car down.
So essentially have to turn your Auto Handbrake back into a normal handbrake 😂

to much work. shut down the computer(by turning off the car) take the key off ignition. wait 30 seconds and restart the computer (by turning on the car back up again). it happens to my X6 all the time.
