Just got mine and shot 50 rounds. It is impossible to rack the slide with 8 rounds in the mag. I did not have any failures even when starting 8+1 and slide locked back on empty. Recoil and hammer springs are on the heavy side. Trigger has minor grittiness. Hopefully it gets better with break in.
I don't think the entire line has problems. My particular Sample. Was rough as I eluded to in the review. I did end up selling it to a buddy who did a overall on it and he carries it today
Just got one of these. The slide locked back on the last round every time, but 1 jam and one round that didn’t fire no mark on the primer. Also noticed that it threw the brass straight back towards my forehead. Maybe with a few hundred more rounds things will get easier, especially the slide.
Springfield has been making/importing great firearms in recent history, but they missed the mark on this one. I think this specific 1911 looks so cool, but if it can't even perform adequately then it's no good. It's definitely not worth the asking price. Thanks for the honest review.

At least the Emissary 1911 worked, I've seen other more expensive 1911 have consistent failures to feed or eject. Maybe with a lot more rounds yours will smooth out. Long as it worked, it's reliable. My Shield had a super tight slide on 8 rounds but it has smoothed out after 4 years.
I installed Hilton's guide rod on my EMISSARY 1911 .45 and that's about it; fn's without issue = eats everything and the only other peeve I have is the "squishy" end of travel on the safety "OFF" lever. I'll get to that... Its a nice 1911 and one of two 1911 SA products that I have. And they are sharp shooters
My guide rod was very rough, I put it in the drill press and sanded it with 400 grit sandpaper then polished. I own many Springers and everyone has a "sponge" for a safety off position. I bought one of those low end LW Custon Kimbers the other day. Guess what, safety off is rock solid. What's up Springfield?
Sorry to hear you got a bad one. Bought mine week ago in 9mm, shot 100 rds out the box without cleaning, no problem, cleaned, oiled shot 200 rounds, no problems. Polished barrel, feed ramp, chamber and rails, another 200 rds without a malfunction. I don't have lumber jack hands so I smoothed out the rough fore-grip. I don't care for square trigger guard, (I have a lot of money in 1911 holsters witch won't fit). My biggest disappointment is it will only accept "flat" bottom magazines. Some of my 9mm 1911 mags have sort of a rounded bottom, they bind and won't work. I haven't decided on the sights as yet.. Will try them for a while.
@@theblacksheepknights Got the 4.25, started having extractor problems around 500 rounds. Just couldn't get it tuned. Replaced with a Wilson Combat bullet proof extractor, runs great now.
You win some you lose some I guess. Not sure what's up with modern Springfield, they seem to miss the mark a lot lately. great review as always and appreciate the honesty
I love mine. I agree the U-Notch rear sight has to go. The square trigger guard I like but holster issues is a problem. People complain about the polymer trigger, no biggie for me. Mine has been flawless and accurate. However at the shop I work at some people are trading them in.
I have one as well, I started running cheap Polish 230 grain ammo, and non Chip McCormick or Wilson magazines. I experienced several double feeds and FTE's. Went back to my Wilson magas and good 230 grain ammo, no issues. Mind you I have just under 300 rounds total through it and since I made those changes no problems, after I hit 1000 rounds I am going to see if it will run with the cheap ammo and magazines,,,But as for now, I am happy, 1911s are like race cars, they require just a little bit more maintenance..
My first gun with a U-dot sight, I'm more accurate with it than with my VP9 with red dot. Amazing gun. Failure to lock back occurs occasionally, but the gun functions flawlessly.
Dan Wesson 45 vigel out of the box, same $ better for the money and no mim parts. I ordered an emissary 45 4.24" at my FFL and as I was going to purchase I saw the Dan Wesson 45 vigel 4.25" for the exact same $ amount, I obviously walked out with the Dan Wesson. Better fitment as well. No brainer 😁👍
I had one, wasn't sure of the looks at first but they grew on me fast and I still think it looks great. What I didn't care for was the trigger and mostly, the sights. The sights seem better suited for up close work and to me don't work well for shooting at any kind of distance.
News flash for those interested. Plastic fantastic, (Glock 71 and 19) holsters work just fine with the 1911 square trigger guards. Lousy work around, but it works. ;
I’ve seen bad reviews about this gun but not on the Springfield operator!!! Think am gonna go with the operator, too bad I like this one in the commander model.
I have had 0 issues with my 4.25", and recommend it to anyone. Springfield just needs to step up their QC. They put out some great stuff, and then some which ends up like this and gets shit on. Really unfortunate.
@@rdrgear To contrast my Emissary, my Socom was pretty inaccurate out of the box. Super fun and it runs but just edgy build quality. I had it worked over and now it's amazing. Shame.
It isn't tossing the brass out very far which seems to indicate slow slide velocity. A full size gun in 9mm is already at a disadvantage because of the mass of the slide vs. the recoil impulse. Maybe it needs a lighter spring to help compensate.
I love mine. I love the sights. I love the trigger guard too. I have enough 1911s with rounded trigger guards. Try something new every once in a while. My Sigs have square trigger guards too. Is there no justice left in this world? Damn those companies trying to make things look better and be less boring. I buy custom individual holsters for all of my pistols anyway. I don’t know why so many people have so many problems with everything. I just never seem to have any of these problems. And, all this nonsense about 1911s not being reliable is just idiotic. The 1911 passed a 6000 round military test in 1911! Over 100 years ago. Yeah, 6000 rounds with zero malfunctions over 100 years ago. Certainly, with all the fantastic advancements, which the 1911 has definitely benefited from, they must be far more reliable than they were over 100 years ago. Just the ammo alone should improve reliability. So, if 1911s don’t work for you, look in the mirror. They aren’t still here and dominating shooting sports over 100 years later, because they don’t work. In fact, in 1985, I was on a armory detail packing away over 5000 1911 pistols. Many were made in the 1930s and early 1940s. Almost all of them passed the function checks and looked great while doing so. We all wanted to buy them, but we were not permitted to do so. Just keep going Springfield. It’s a great pistol. It’s beautiful too. Square trigger guard and all. Some people will complain no matter what you do.
Maybe I missed it, but what magazines did you run? I am not a super fan of the Mec-gar mags that came with my 4.25 .45 ACP Emissary, but my Wilson mags, and Chip McCormick mags run with no issue, and positive slide lock.
Weird I love mine, I don't have any issues with last round lock back. I don't carry it, so no issue with holsters. The sights did take some time to get used to. My first exposure to the ice cream scoop sights was on my carry, hellcat pro. But once I conquered those style sights I see it as just an expansion of my adaptability to firearms. Now when shooting the emissary it doesn't feel foreign.
No problems with mine through 250 rounds with 3 different kinds of ammo. A couple spots on the slide worries me that the finish might be wearing prematurely but no problems whatsoever with functionality.
Take it through a high round count class or a class where you get the gun hot and dirty and more than 250 rounds and then report back. Interested to see how it holds up
My Blackhawk Serpa holster takes this gun. I needed to loosen the retention, but it locks in place and moves like any of my other 1911's with a round TG.
I’m miffed about having to spend $100 immediately to get an ambi safety (lefty)and bought the Wilson flat METAL trigger….. I had a small burr in the chamber that had to be addressed as well… And got a warren tactical straight 8 type rear sight…
I like U-notch black rear sights on ANY pistol. I just hate the non traditional cuts and textures, and have had bad experience with SA production guns.
I've put 650ish of random whatever ammo thru mine and I had one failure to lock back on the last round but that was with a kimber 10 round mag, and it only occurred once in the first 50 rds Other then that It's ran like a champ with every mag I put in it even the cheapest pos mags.
I have two of these, one in 9mm, one in .45. Sights are a preference. These old eyes really like the U notch and green front. As for the holsters, it's true that front square site makes most holsters obsolete. However, with increased demand, holsters have come. Vedder Holsters is the first, and mine works very well, fits both guns, I can switch as I desire. As for the slide issues mentioned, I've never experienced that issue. Something close with the 9mm and a high grip, if my offhand thumb rubs the slide, I can stop it from going into battery. But after that ever so slight issue, hundreds of rounds with both, no issues. Love them both. What I will add in critique, I would like a travel stop screw in the trigger, but again, not a function issue, just a personal one.
Don't pull punches. I think most of us prefer honest reviews...having said that....Jeff's review is based off of one sample....and I have yet to hear anyone else echo Jeff's complains. So take all this for what it's worth..... But yeah you do expect "so much gun for "$1200 USD/42250 CAD....could get the TRP Operator" (last gen TRP) for the same or $50'00 less. :) Do you love blued guns? I DO. .on a "range/recreational shooting" gun--i don't consier a gun with a blued finish a fighting gun" finish...it's too "pretty"...doesn't handle acid/oil from fingerwell, likely show scratches well too... would I buy a 1811 blued YES....not as a "fighting gun" (DLC or the like)....
Well it looks nice...Or is that just Crispy filters?! :) Looks like it kicks a lil much for a gun that should be more tame. It's ok to be Boujee Jeff :) you always pick and offer up content on all types and cost levels. You be the "Boujee You" when you need! We support ya! Great episode!
That’s pretty weird. I’m about 1,000 rounds into the one I have and have not had any malfunctions. Personally I like the u notch sights but I can see how someone might not like them. If it’s failing to lock open on an empty mag, maybe your hand placement is hitting the slide release, or it’s a magazine issue? Just a thought.
No hand placement. Only really one way to grip a 1911/2011. I grew up on the 1911. Long before I had my first polymer pistol. The amount of used emissary’s out there does not surprise me. Appreciate the comment and watch
I had problem at the range with the slide on a 1911, Guy next to me said let me show you something Hold the slide with one hand with the other put hand around the grip and push down with the grip while holding the slide. I never had another problem after that. Later his introduction, after telling him thanks found out he was a Navy Seal.
Heard a few problems with the emissary with reliability. Kinda sad to hear, since my loaded series 1911 has been extremely reliable since I got it, same with other Springfield 1911s I have shot. So it seems it’s not holding up to the reliability as Springfield 1911s have.
@@rdrgear my humble apologies I forgot that UA-cam tactical experts are the only source of viable information - my sub 1.5 inch groups with U notch sights doesn’t count because I don’t wear tactical gear and process to be 1 of the 5 know it all’s. Unsub
@@DavidV4444 no. You just need to know that no one other than Springfield uses the “U notch sight. All high end 1911 and 2011 pistol use a Novak style or a proprietary cut rear sight on pistols other then target models.
@@rdrgear I don’t know… my Wilson Classic has a square rear and target sight but my CQB, CQB with rail, my CQB Tactical LE’s (one in 9mm, the other in .45) and my two EDC X9’s all have Wilson’s battle sight which is a “U” albeit not a white outline U like Springfield but still a “U”. I love these sights and they make a regular guy like me shoot very very well.
I don't have a 1911 but I want one. It won't be a EDC and I'm basically buying one just to have one. I love my Springfield xdm. I was looking at Kimber but hearing people say the quality went down on those too.
@@rdrgear thanks for the input about Kimber. I don't know if I can wait that long tho. I'll probably pick up an Emissary tomorrow at a gun show if I can find one.
Kimber is kind of hit and miss on quality but they do make good 1911's more often than not. If you want a 1911 just to have one, SDS and Tisas have had pretty awesome success in their 1911 lineups. Rock Island also has standard and tactical models that function reliably. Springfield also has the defender series 1911. Can always buy one of those and upgrade it little by little as you learn and explore. The TRP is kinda costly compared to the defender series.
I think the best way is to shop for the base model Springfields and upgrade if 1200 is your budget. Or save for something better. Also identify the wants or needs for a single action pistol.
@@rdrgear do what I did get a lucky auction on gunbroker.. got mine for 860 brand new in box, it will take time waiting for a good one that doesn’t get taken but you’ll get one eventually just sort by ending soonest and check back every 2 days and wait for new ones, bid on the last 1/2 min and pray🤷🏼♂️
Seems like the frame to slide fit is slowing the slide down enough to not get lock back but not enough to cause malfunction. It’ll probably rectify itself with lube and some break in with hotter ammo. Not saying that’s acceptable/unacceptable but from the slow motion the ejection pattern looks weak which is another indicator.
230 grn was used. These guns rarely run 185 without flaws. Gun did come out the box and to the range. I have new Wilson mags and a new slide stop, new sights, and new girls on the way for a follow up video.
You have enough experience to know the difference between over travel and take up. Yes? No? That was take up, Not over travel which by the way has an adjustment if it were. As far as the squared trigger guard, don't you think there are plenty of 1911's that have the standard guard to the point that an offering of the old competition style Swenson square faced guard being available is something that should be appreciated for those that want something different? As far as holsters go I sure as hell am not going to select a 1911 by what brand of holster I can have for it. If not factory available, I will have one made. End of issue. You state the the sights do not belong on this type of gun. Huh? IN your personal opinion or taste perhaps. The "U" notch has proven to be a faster sight for many. Your personal opinion or preference has nothing to do with whether a factory should us them or not. Period. Poor slide to frame fit is on the other hand an legitimate issue. What I saw however in this this review was mostly personal emotional based opinion. Not fact based. Sadly, For those that like or own these guns, ignore this mans lack of knowledge. Any holster that will fit a near same length slide holster for a Staccato or unless it leaves an embarrassing taste in your mouth, a Glock 19 and 17 holster. Leather or kydex. ;
I always prefer "honesty" in any YT channel video. Some channels I think makeup issues and facts just to create a buzz to get more views. You question it when they make claims about a company and their expereinces (negative) yet no one else has. So you then start taking what they say (negative) with a grain of salt... At certain prie points----I agree, a gun should not have "those issues" nor should htey be e.g. using MIM parts e.g. SIG P226 X5 /Legion on a $2500 gun.....DW guns don't have MIM parts. I wonder if all companies making polymer guns use MIM parts....HK? CANIK?? ....do Beretta guns use a few mIM parts? Their 92 Series guns?? Do the SIG "from Germany made" guns have any MIM parts??
I feel the MIM is a new buzz word. 2 years ago non one really used mim in the daily conversation. It's interesting. But in agree it would be interesting to see if other use them and just by their name people assume they don't. Emissary i reviewed I don't feel is a representation of the Springfield 1911 line up.

Some of my 9mm 1911 mags have sort of a rounded bottom, they bind and won't work. I haven't decided on the sights as yet.. Will try them for a while.
did you get the 4.25 or 5" version?
@@theblacksheepknights Got the 4.25, started having extractor problems around 500 rounds. Just couldn't get it tuned. Replaced with a Wilson Combat bullet proof extractor, runs great now.
@@jackmarks2176 good to hear. I was starting to worry, I just ordered thr 5" 9mm one. Fingers crossed.
Polish the feed ramp 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Where are you getting Vigils for market price? I'd love one but I'm only seeing them going for 1700 and higher
I bought mine at old glory guns and ammo in NH, phenomenal place FFL, lots of great products and inventory, I bought mine a couple of years ago.
I paid $1299.99
I had one, wasn't sure of the looks at first but they grew on me fast and I still think it looks great. What I didn't care for was the trigger and mostly, the sights. The sights seem better suited for up close work and to me don't work well for shooting at any kind of distance.
News flash for those interested. Plastic fantastic, (Glock 71 and 19) holsters work just fine with the 1911 square trigger guards. Lousy work around, but it works. ;
I may test this. I highly doubt it will work, all holsters are not created equal. I have been bending plastic for over 10years.
I’ve seen bad reviews about this gun but not on the Springfield operator!!! Think am gonna go with the operator, too bad I like this one in the commander model.
I bet the ejector is dragging on the slide slowing things down too much.
The ejector doesn't touch the slide. What the hell are you going on about?
I have had 0 issues with my 4.25", and recommend it to anyone. Springfield just needs to step up their QC. They put out some great stuff, and then some which ends up like this and gets shit on. Really unfortunate.
Agreed i had some older 1911’that I regret ever getting rid of
@@rdrgear To contrast my Emissary, my Socom was pretty inaccurate out of the box.
His demo is with a .45, I believe.
This pistol is trash. The 1911 in general is not.
I was saving up to get this 1911 for my first 1911 but I am a big hk guy an ran across a hk usp45
Plus I have a Cz97 so can't complain 🤣🤷🏻♂️
Have the 9mm. 0 issues, flat shooting, very easy to get on target and accurate.
I had a small burr in the chamber that had to be addressed as well…
And got a warren tactical straight 8 type rear sight…
I like U-notch black rear sights on ANY pistol. I just hate the non traditional cuts and textures, and have had bad experience with SA production guns.
I see the cases didn't eject far, I wonder if they forgot to radius the firing pin retainer correctly.
I've put 650ish of random whatever ammo thru mine and I had one failure to lock back on the last round but that was with a kimber 10 round mag, and it only occurred once in the first 50 rds Other then that It's ran like a champ with every mag I put in it even the cheapest pos mags.
I’m glad you got a good one.
Thank you for giving an objective review.
Thank you for watching
You are not getting a TRP for 1200.00. I just bought one at dealer
Cost for 1495.00 they are being sold new for 1700-1895.00.
Gotta know the products before you make statements. Ps others had issues. From my research.
Are you drunk, or did your dog write this comment?
Work on your grammar. It goes a long way to credibility.
Thx RDR

www.boujeeblasters.com this is where I make my millions.
Watching in the philippines
Thank you
Appreciate the watch
I had problem at the range with the slide on a 1911, Guy next to me said let me show you something Hold the slide with one hand with the other put hand around the grip and push down with the grip while holding the slide. I never had another problem after that. Later his introduction, after telling him thanks found out he was a Navy Seal.
Lol what?!
I will be doing this the second mine gets here 😂
Did the same thing with my colt combat elite xse… it worked!
RDR, will prodigy 5 inch holsters fit?.......maybe staccato 5 inch holsters?.......did'nt have any of the issues you exprienced.
Majestic looking beast
Seriously there needs to be a very clear disclosure when you get guns for free. Your reviews hold water.
Appreciate the watch. Just an FYI we don’t get all guns for free. When I do i share that. I bought this pistol.
Heard a few problems with the emissary with reliability. Kinda sad to hear, since my loaded series 1911 has been extremely reliable since I got it, same with other Springfield 1911s I have shot. So it seems it’s not holding up to the reliability as Springfield 1911s have.
The og guns were work horses.
The U notch is the only viable sight for a 1911 (a signature of Wilson Combat and the very best rear sight possible).
Wtf lol. Please stop.
@@DavidV4444 all guns shoot sub 1.5” groups. Even my high point does. Well it’s more me than the gun but still. I also don’t wear tactical clothing.
I would definitely not buy a Kimber. Wait till June/July. Springfield is launching some new models of the TRP. That I think will be impressive
What 1911 would you say are worth the 1200 price mark and not getting the $800-900 problem??
You have enough experience to know the difference between over travel and take up. Yes? No? That was take up, Not over travel which by the way has an adjustment if it were. As far as the squared trigger guard, don't you think there are plenty of 1911's that have the standard guard to the point that an offering of the old competition style Swenson square faced guard being available is something that should be appreciated for those that want something different? As far as holsters go I sure as hell am not going to select a 1911 by what brand of holster I can have for it. If not factory available, I will have one made. End of issue.
You state the the sights do not belong on this type of gun. Huh? IN your personal opinion or taste perhaps. The "U" notch has proven to be a faster sight for many. Your personal opinion or preference has nothing to do with whether a factory should us them or not. Period.
Poor slide to frame fit is on the other hand an legitimate issue. What I saw however in this this review was mostly personal emotional based opinion. Not fact based. Sadly,
For those that like or own these guns, ignore this mans lack of knowledge. Any holster that will fit a near same length slide holster for a Staccato or unless it leaves an embarrassing taste in your mouth, a Glock 19 and 17 holster. Leather or kydex. ;
Ahh.. the good old knife maker chiming in. Lmao
was bidding on a couple on gun broker, glad I lost twice
What's the price onIn
Damn second shot into the video the gun jammed at 0:23 lol
Pistols do malfunction now and then. Keep in mind this pistol was out box and their were the first rounds fired
What exactly is "5in government length " means?
Government length slides or 5” Gov length refers the the length of the slide, there are traditional 3 barrel lengths of 1911’s. Officers, 3” Commander 4.25” and Government 5”.
I bought the Emissary 5" 45acp and have none of the problems you talked about. Have only used PMC 240 gr target load, S&B 240 gr target load and Hornaday Critical Defense HP 240 gr. All rounds fired flawlessly. The other "issues" you talked about are personal preferences.
Hello my name is Ruben Marcano I have a new Emesary 1911 cal 45 with 4/25 barrel and I have the same problem also I have problem with resets the trigger I send back to the company and all the problem we’re taking care I have no problem with the pistol fire more than 500 bullets and no problem so far ok thanks for your help ok
The magazines suck
What I was thinking sounds like a mag issue , when you have trouble racking the slide when its loaded its putting pressure on the slide very common problem when manufacturers try to push the mag capacity.
Brought the 9m nothing but jam s
Cld not get off more than 2 rounds without it jamming
Very costly mistake
did you get the 4.25 or 5" version?
That’s sucks. Hope they take care of tou
Oh and are Ca legal. Please give me your opinion
