This is the best, most detailed review of the Emissary that I have seen. As I have come to expect from your channel, this is another no BS review from someone who obviously know his 1911s.
Great review broheim. A smart man learns from not only his own experiences but also from the knowledge of those more experienced than himself. I've known Hilton for two decades and I am never disappointed by his knowledge bombs and opinions. I've been running guns for 46 years, armorer on multiple weapons for 30+ years (including the 1911) and this guy has forgotten more about 1911's than I will ever know. The internet is full of SME's. I was listening to Hilton before the internet was a thing. Good work brother, keep it up.
My Dan Wesson Specialist in 9mm has been a great gun over the time I have owned it. The only thing I did after the first range session was changed to a 13lb recoil spring. The gun is very well put together with most the features I like out the box. No feeding issues with the factory mags but I do use the Wilson Vickers and Nighthawk mags the most. I almost exclusively feed it 147gr flat nose and Gold Dot / HST. Overall money to gun ratio I feel like I have come out very well with my Dan Wesson. Just a sample size of one though.
Thanks for the review. Had a hard time finding holsters till I saw your earlier emissary reviews now I’m good to go. Also had some feed-way issues but after some break in time and a 12lb spring it is much more consistent. Changed a bunch of parts so far. Good price for a project gun. Hoping to pop into one of your Armor schools when time and money permit.
just purchased this 9mm Emissary and will be interesting to see how it rocks. Great review, I am sure I may need to modify as I gen do all my firearms. Thanks for sharing, gave you a sub.
Hi Hilton. As for the bulbarrel 9mm. I have great succes with the Bul Armory line. Msrp is higher though and also lot of MIM out of the box in the standard trim.
It would be really interesting to see a review from you on one of the Bul armory double stack 9mm guns. Most of the reviews I’ve seen from people less knowledgeable than you so far. Thanks for the great info
Thank you for the support. I get comments about the Bul guns but my shortest answer is that they're imported, have extensive use of MIM parts, are of unknown mag/grip and parts compatibility, at a price point not competitive to the all US made Staccato which is built with 100% US made machined components and CNC/hand fit together in TX.
Can We get some more information on the 10-8 reverse plug and what it offers over the factory guide rod? Any reason to get a supported or "hat" style plug vs an open design?
EDIT: Referencing Episode 58 @ 6:34 the reverse plug guide rode is shown installing on the TRP ua-cam.com/video/eVbReVjPhBY/v-deo.html I still would be interested in a "hat" or "supported" style plug.
Looking for a 1911, 9mm, 4.25 barrel that is not flippy. Which is best bet: Springfield Emmissary, Springfield Ronin, Dan Wesson Guardian, Alpha Foxtrot, Ruger SR TW commander, Tisas Stingray or other?
Is there any distinction in small parts btw Colt and Springfield anymore? Used to be the only MIM parts in a colt were sear, disco, and mag catch. Now the hammers are investment cast too. Maybe a barstock slide stop on safety but I usually change the safeties anyhow. I also wonder if the extractors are of discernible quality and the MFG process for those parts.
Just picked one up. Out of the box it had almost no extractor tension. Tuned and tensioned extractor but a bit disappointing. Two questions.. 1. Do you tune the ejector the same as a .45 or just leave it be as is? 2. Do you expect a 9mm 1911 to pass/fail the extractor function test in the same way?
Mr. Yam, if I'm tracking correctly, the 45 acp Emissary doesn't have the same ejector issues as the 9mm? 45 acp is the better purchase based on the recoil and ejector concerns?
I'd caution that these are samples of one and meant more to show how/where failures in the manufacturing and build process can occur. I've had plenty of .45 production guns which failed extraction and ejection just like this 9mm. It'd be more that you have to be aware that it's not a given that a new 1911 extractor is set up 100%.
About the bushing barrel, and the speed at which the slide cycles, do you think it's better for me to buy this Emissary or the Springfield Ronin, with the regular barrel? I'm looking for my first 1911 in 9mm caliber, but I'm still undecided between models. Thanks for your help. Greetings from Brazil!🖖
What are your thoughts/experiences with Dan Wesson pistols? Specifically, the 9mm heavy barrel ECP? I recently passed on a smoking deal on one and I’m starting to regret it.
@@108Performance thanks for the reply, Hilton. One more question, watching some videos about staccato they say they chose shorter slides to reduce weight to aide in reliability. Judging by your response I’m taking that doesn’t carry over to 1911s in 9mm, then? This would be a carry gun, and I definitely wouldn’t want to give anything up in reliability.
I seem to recall it was set to launch a year or two ago. Since my niche is service pistols, the DWX will have no effective footprint in that market where the Staccato 2011 already has a pretty solid foothold, to include Safariland and Blackhawk duty holsters. The DWX might be neat as an aficionado gun.
Only the compact Ronin EMP 3" and 4" models have a cone barrel, the full size Ronin models are bushing barrels. The Ronin also has a traditional round top slide, round trigger guard, and no texturing on the frame. And a curved trigger instead of flat....a fiber optic front instead of tritium... And wood grips instead of G10.
@@108Performance how about first 1911 9mm? I think the springfield Garrison only comes in .45. Are 9mm 1911s more complicated than their .45 counterpart? In terms of parts, maintenance, reliability?
First shoot your gun to see if it even has issues. I can't possibly describe all the work via UA-cam comments. I have a Patreon page where I cover this type of work, as well as my 1911 Duty Tune DVD. See links in the video description. Thanks!
That’s basically what I’ve outlined. If there’s any of those operations done, I’m certainly not able to discern them with the guns apart on my workbench.

DW guns have always been solidly built from quality machined parts, seen some in my classes over the years and they're consistent.
Got my emissary for 960 brand new in box on gunbroker, hella excited, any tips for changing springs and other stuff I could change with it?

Great video - really enjoyed it. Solid perspective and pragmatic. Thank you. One question, why do you only prefer full size? Thank you. Subbed
Sorry to ask but which 2011 holster did you use? I’ve already had to return two holsters that didn’t work quite right. Thanks!

I believe Springfield's 1911 magazines are made by Mec Gar

My most recent Colt is circa 2012-14 and has forged slide stop, cast safeties, bar stock extractor which is fine

Would you pick a Stacatto over a Sig 226 SAO Legion??
Yes
Yam
Is that the LEO range out by Lake Pleasant??
The shack looks familiar
Nope
What does the ejection pattern show in this instance. Do you have a video discussing this?
It's in every one of my 2022 1911 and Prodigy review videos. Consistent pattern = consistent function.

Emissary 9mm is softer
for which exact stacato model is that holster? i want to buy the same one for my emissary.

Would you say this is your softest shooting 1911 even compared to a Staccato?
My Emissary in 45acp had no issues. Is this an issue with the 9mm version?
It's a matter of examining them *per specimen*, not as a trend. My .45 Emissary had some issues which I'll be documenting in an upcoming video.
Any interest in the upcoming Dan Wesson DWX? Seems like a slightly more cost effective alternative to a 2011.

i just bought the emissary 9mm government. You are making me nervous. Should I be worried? It's coming to me in 3 weeks.
Would you recommend this gun for people wanting to get their first 1911?
I would recommend something less expensive like the Springfield Garrison

9mm 1911 adds some complexity and mag selection becomes even more critical than .45…where it is already extremely critical.

You’re review is thorough but you clearly did not spend the extra hour educating yourself in my opinion.
Educating myself about what in particular?
His time in federal law enforcement and DECADES as a 1911 armorer isn't enough education for you? 🤔
