just a secret for your 4k collection. original Rambo from early 80s first blood is fantastic transfer. No grain really at all. Its a must have and git it only 12.99 brand new. One of the best 4k i own
I’m a huge fan of the film. I own just about every format of the film. Trust me: Be content with the standard blu ray format. AVOID this UHD blu ray AT ALL COSTS. It’s the worst 4K transfer I’ve ever seen. The grain on this transfer is enhanced and looks absolutely atrocious on 4K sets. The standard blu ray is the best the film has ever looked, even on 4K sets. And the sound, despite being revised from the original theatrical release, is far better for home theater presentation.
Hopefully there will be technology that can convert old movies like Superman to real 4k or by then 8k or 16k AND have the film in 60fps or 100fps which would make it more crystal clear.
I don't care what most people say. Warner did go to original 35 mm and remastered it for 4k. Is the best they could do. I have the old dvd, never get the bd, now I will get the 4k to support their try, couse they knew the negative this will get and they did it anyway and I like that.
I prefer the extended Blu Ray cut of this movie, plus I could do without all the grain, so it will be interesting to see what they do with the 40th -50th anniversary editions in the future once they’ve read & listened to everyone’s thoughts on this 4K release which I will be giving a miss this time around, which is a shame. They cut the Luther underground scene as they said “we already know he can withstand all these things, bullets, fire, frost etc”...well we also know he can fly too, but we still wanna see it! I do anyway.
its a shame that the superman sequels have Not seen 4k releases yet superman 2, 3, and 4 all fun when the batman movies came out in 4k, the first movie came out with its sequels and the batman movies are Younger than superman 1 versus the the superman sequels i think that the superman sequels should be able to follow
No it's not?. That's why I was saying I hope they do the same 4k remaster to the extended version. Which was shown on tv. The only problem? Was the commercials.
The cinematography was done to look soft to begin with. I'm not sure how much better it can look but I'll pick it up at some point. My favourite comic book film of all time.
Honestly the softness doesn’t really bother me but I can imagine it does have some effect on the limits to what enhancements Dolby Vision can do. That being said, Superman’s suit has never looked better than it does here.
Cool. Well I'll pick it up at some point. Funds low right now and I just picked up 2001 yesterday. Don't have the money for all these releases lol.@@MovieGuy365
got it for 14.99 yesterday. I know people complaining about 4k. Dome scenes look amazing some look bad . Scenes in daily planet were great . To me if you can get this movie for 15 bucks well worth it
I couldn't have said it better bro. This movie is so special to me. Hold it close to my heart cause of such a great Superman and Clark Kent Christopher Reeve was and tragedy in his life. I also have seen it tons of times and no matter how many time I've watched it and many more times I will keep sing it that intro will always give me chills.
The red of Supes' cape is gorgeous in 4K. The grainiest shots seem to be the EFFECTS COMPOSITES on Krypton. This is because these shots are dupes run through an optical printer, several generations removed from the original camera negative. The effects shots that were accomplished IN CAMERA, like those using the Zoptic front projection process, are very fine grain.
I just bought this last night. The Atmos track is an updated version of the 2000 5.1 mix. The Dolby 5.1 track is either (a) the original 70mm 5.1 mix, or (b) an enhanced version of either the 70mm mix or the original Dolby Stereo mix. It's actually the best version of the original mix I've heard, probably due to the LFE. Anyone looking for the original audio should be satisfied.
@@MovieGuy365 That's very true, but that's wasn't my point. I just wanted to point out that the 4K disc DOES include the original audio. I'd hate for someone to not buy this because the original sound is missing.
This on 4k baffles me. Not sure its my tv but the scene where Clark is helping Lana to tidy away the sports equipment in Smallville early on in the film looks really really odd. I changed my gamma setting on the ST2084 and it kind of resolves their facial complexions. Its a scene where they look like they are smothered in makeup and the background of the fields look a smeary mess too. Since changing the setting it looks ok and a few other facial features run like this ive noticed in the dark knight especially on Christian Bale. Its a bit annoying having to change this setting for the few instances. Movieguy?do you know whats occuring here?
i watched Superman in theatres when i was 4 and i actually remember it. best super hero movie because it was the first , without this movie no Batman 89, no Spiderman 2002, no Avengers, this movie did it all first. this movie score is perfect , theatrical cut is the best one. ive heard this film looks better in blue ray then 4k.
I LOVE this movie. But this 4k version was VERY disappointing and I highly do NOT recommend it. In fact, I thought the standard blu-ray version that is included looked better. In my opinion this is a HARD PASS. They need to do a new transfer.
For only $22 At best buy u can't beat the price plus free shipping...still waiting on 2001 4k even though I preordered it weeks before it was delayed due to a mastering error on the disc...thankfilly I have it on iTunes since the 2011 and they upgraded the video with the 4k version so I can watch it on my apple tv soon...i already own a Chromecast as well as a ps3 and ps4 to watch on my six year old hdtv 1080p 3d which has smart features
Huge Superman fan here but thought it was very disappointing. The clarity is obviously better although at the time I didn't think it, not until I compared the normal Blu-Ray. Strange that you say the suit and colors popped more as that's the thing that really let me down. The suit looked bland and dull. Almost all colors were a little bit muted because of the darker picture HDR brings to make the highlights and brighter colors pop more. It's almost as if they didn't apply HDR. Not sure if you've compared to it your other versions but other than the clarity the 1080p version is superior to me. Where the colors are more saturated and overall brighter compared to the 4K version. Also the grain is very prominent throughout, Kryptons scenes are bad but even Smallville and Metropolis have a quite a bit overall.
It’s almost a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul with this release. I wanted more from the HDR but it would come at the cost of taking away the intended “look” and softness. I don’t think everyone is satisfied fully but I don’t think it looks worse then the Blu Ray. Superman himself is better than he’s ever looked. Many older films benefit greatly from 4K and HDR. It’s not really the case here sadly.
@@MovieGuy365 I did think it would be better than it was as Warner's usually do a great job with the older catalogue such as Blade Runner and a few others. Even when comparing DVD to Blu-Ray they always seem to have great transfers. Unsworth did put some filters on top to give it fantasy dreamlike haze. Which does take away some of the detail and makes it hard to get better clarity / colors even with HDR at work. But he was a brilliant DP and his lighting is second to none.
I think having this copy for over a year now i think it looks clearer on blu ray. Ok so the 4k disc may be the way to go but overall the blu ray appears less softer. Colours are bolder.. maybe as not as accurate but like my blu ray copy of Unforgiven compared to the 4k its alot lighter. Esp the opening scene of unforgiven is really quite dark to the point of not been able to see very much at all. It may have been clint estwoods intension but I do favour the blu ray on some of these older movies. Die hard is another one of these movies that only has a small apprecative uptick but there was nothing wrong at alll with the blu ray. Aside from a few gripes with the superman disc.. i found this to be quite the looker on dvd.. comparing it to the vhs. And the blu ray was mastered from this dvd and again it didnt look all that much of an improvement. So this 4k is not going to be leaps and bounds over an already good looking dvd. There are some great lookinh dvds still out there. Jaws was another great anniversary released dvd however the blu ray of jaws did blow this out of the water. I wouldnt rush out and buy superman for $20.. if you already have the standard blu ray from the anthology set then my advice is to let your player do its job of upscaling.. likewise for Unforgiven!
I agree with you on the film. It's still good. The sound, and color are definitely better. I only wish it would have been the 3 hour extended version. I did really enjoy it when I saw it in the movie theater in 1978. I wish they would still rerelease it in theaters now. I think people would really enjoy it.
I heard somewhere that the "haze" was created by putting Vaseline on the camera lens. Apparently the Vaseline is so close to the gate where the image is captured, and the focus is so far away from that, that the image isn't especially obscured. But it does scatter the light enough that it adds a glow or haze to create a dreamlike effect. Pretty common trick apparently, although they did it pretty heavily on Superman. It wasn't until at least Blu-ray when the haze didn't kinda make for a lousy transfer on Superman. The haze did not do the VHS or DVD versions any favors. Be interesting to see the 4K, where the light-scattering photography effect can be fully appreciated with minimal artifacts, banding, chroma noise, or other problems that occur when digital technology is trying to reconstitute a less than sharp image.
Thanks Adam🙏 and to think John Williams missed out on an OSCAR for the theme is madness.
Beautiful score, one of his most memorable.
Mind blowing he didn't get a Oscar for that. Just mind blowing how val kilmer didn't even get nomanated for doc holiday.

I read somewhere that the haze/soft focus look was used in order to help conceal the wires. Thus sadly will be on the original negative.
Best opening titles ever in a movie in my opinion.

For the most part yes. Film grain is present as it should be, but it seemed overly heavy handed in the opening Krypton scenes as I noted in my review.
Is this 4K version the extended TV edition like what we got with the blu ray a few years back?
Theatrical only.
