50 years from now the camper may be long gone, you may forget every place you went, but the memory of the time spent with your dad will be solid gold, trust me, my 50 years has past, I've seen the country, done wonderous things , but some of my best memories are of the times my dad and I did some goofy project together
Hey Seymour! Now ain’t that the truth! This was our first big project together and it was a time I’ll cherish for life! Thanks for sharing your wisdom! Here’s to more goofy projects! 😝 and remember to enjoy the bumps in the road haha!
SHOEBOX, I am a late watcher, lol.
I just watched this video.
Anyways, it's good to see you still have a good relationship with your dad. Cherish that!!!!
I love your shoebox camper.
We all learn as we go. That's what life is all about, MEMORIES.
My father passed away about a decade ago. I love that wood stove. Get yourself a fire extinguisher, carbon monoxide detector and a smoke detector.
Also led Christmas lights. I use the blue ones at night. They only use a couple of watts of power.
Hey thanks for the comment! You're not late we are just getting started here :) Hoping to upload a lot mroe soon. Life is about memories and learning as we go!! Time with dad is the best, i'm sure your father is proud of you. Got the fire safety gear!! God speed!
Making my own shoebox except it will mounted to a utility trailer. Can definitely get stressful, Especially when the people that don't want to help have the most to say about what you're doing wrong. Good build! Looks like a lot of fun.
Sorry i missed the comment but I hope your Shoebox is doing well!! This is one of the most true comments, everyone not involved has the loudest voice 😂
Nice build. I built my own wood framed fiberglass camper shell in 1987 after ETS'ing from the Army. Inspired by a friend in Hawaii, surf board builder who made his own. 1x3 wood strips are super good for framing especially if your skin is rigid (sheet alum, or fiberglass). Today closed cell spray foam will offer a rigid waterproof structural member. I would offer that you should locate a semi trailer repair shop to buy a single piece of alum sheet. I bought a 14' piece x 105'" for $250 last year.
Hey thanks for commenting, and thank you for your service!! All really great tips in here. A big single piece of aluminum would be great for my roof, I might have to try that on my next repair job. I'm shaping a surfboard right now and I think a camper out of foam would be awesome haha. God speed!
Really appreciate the details you provide here. I have been "building" my camper on paper for years now, and I was able to Garner quite a few helpful ideas and comments. Thanks for posting.
Glad you enjoyed!! Hey that's awesome! Best of wishes with the build! if you ever want to reach out with a question or send a photo i'd be happy to check it out! (on instagram or email me). Have fun!
I am very impressed with the shoebox build really nice job !! I’m going to build a small camper on my 96 ford ranger I do like the idea of the metal siding and roofing how did that work out for leaks ?? I tried to get a good look at it but couldn’t
What is way better than the camper itself.......... when you are old and your dad has passed on from this life, you will look back on this with so much love and warmth from getting to build this with your dad ........ priceless time
Love this comment ❤️. There is more than a camper here that’s for sure! Priceless memories are right! Hope all is well!
I love the metal siding. I bet it will age well with a nice patina and be simple to repair. Great build and tips. Also, we need a basement garage house tour.
Thanks for the message! I'm excited to see how it will age too! I'm going back there next week, i might have to do that!
The Shoebox is a total inspiration! I live in Montana and am planning to build a winter worthy camper someday. Wish I had your dad's shop to do so! Thanks for sharing.
So glad I could help a little bit with inspiration for your build! At the end of the day if there’s a will there’s a way and I’m confident you’ll get a beauty build done! I believe in you!
That camper will last a lifetime. Very nice build!
The Shoebox is awesome. I lived in a homebuilt truck camper for six months back in the 80s . Good times and powdered eggs. I'd used it after that for years on and off.
That's so awesome. I bet you have some awesome memories from those times. God speed!
The shoe box is definitely something I look forward to start building! I just bought my old truck specifically for that!
That’s awesome! Stoked for you! If you have any questions don’t hesitate to hit me up!
The Shoebox is Awesome! Wow where do I begin. There is so much good information in your video, I can't wait to watch your other videos. Also your father's shop is also very awesome. Thank you for taking the time to share your build.
You’re so kind thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video! Filming lots of road trips this winter!! Thanks for taking the time to comment!
The Shoebox looks amazing. Looking forward to checking out your videos about living with this camper build. I’ve been considering my own build so it was nice to happen upon your channel. Excellent work. 👍
Thanks so much! I appreciate the support and glad you enjoyed! If you have any questions about your build hit me! Good luck with it!
One of the best builds I’ve seen great job!
You dont know how much that means to me!! Thank you!!
Your shoe box build looks super, looking forward to coming camp videos. Always watching the wind for cast and park facing it off coarse, and up the Tyre pressure. Safe trips and thanks for sharing. Best to you from sunny South Africa
Glad you like it! I definitely have to keep wind and tire pressure in mind. Thanks for watching. I am just editing a camping trip right now so stay tuned! Enjoy the sun down there!
I know the "van life" movement is big right now. I've got 3 young kids. It would be beaming with pride if my boys wanted my help in a project like this.
I'm happy to see your dad is willing to help (and knows how to). Good for you two! Great bonding time.
Really appreciate that! As the years pass you realize how priceless time with pops really is! Wishing you and your boys the best!
I love the way you did your camper on the truck it take time funds effort to put everything updated thgs in there you need to go off grid security safe for tight travel
Thank you! My goal was simple but practical design!
I'm getting ready to build an 8' x 14' log cabin on my 1973 Dodge D600 [2 ton]. I'm in the design stage right now. You over-engineered the frame, but that is far better than under-engineering! I am debating steel vs. aluminum vs. wood for the frame. Whether or not I build an extension over the cab of the truck will be a big factor in determining which material I use. This video provides a lot of insight into my choice. Thanks!
Great project. You and your father should be very proud of it.
Where is a heavy heavy heavy duty camper it will definitely last forever great job love to see father and Son work together that’s what really counts
Thank you! Heavy duty is right! And the project with my dad made it all that much more fun!
Great content and build. Looking forward to seeing more!!!!
Thank you!! I have been editing a big video I’m super excited to post, aiming for next Sunday!!
wow this is really ambitious, you and your dad did a fantastic job!! Sharing this
Thanks so much for watching! Glad you enjoyed!
Love the shoebox, I’ve been planning out doing a truck camper on an old flatbed ford dually, this video is super helpful, thank you!
I watched a lady build a sheep herders trailer from a ole landscaping trailer. Great insights for her build and with the ramp , she kept it to use it as a folding deck . She also had a split entry door and her side walls were designed just like a gypsy/sheep herders trailer .
So they angle out slightly which gives ya more space inside .
Awesome work and cool time spent with your faja .
Nice build. I built a teardrop a couple years ago. Something very cool about camping in something you built yourself
You are one lucky guy to have a dad to do this with. Cheers and great job!
I know am not one to make this more enjoyable, but you have the making of a company to in progress, you have the talent to create that camper in a way to build on a dream.
Haha thank you, I have never considered that, but honestly maybe one day that would be awesome!
Totally awesome job. I really liked the video and enjoyed the build. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to more of your videos and hopefully your camping adventure's
I'm so happy you enjoyed the videos. I am currently editing 3 winter camping videos so lots to come over the next few weeks!
wonderful father and son memories, great job!
Thank you! It was awesome! Hoping to do another build with him soon! (For him this time)
you guys did a great job! it actually looks amazing.
Appreciate that! happy summer!
Amazing job man your dad is a cool guy very inspiring
Shoebox!!! Love your build! So talented!!!!! Keep the videos coming!
Thank you so much! Working on some new ones asap!
AWESOME BUILD.
I have a cap and a really high garage. It is easier if you find the exact center, install 1/2" bolts and use another truck and a pulley with hooks and cables to lift the cap or camper up and down. A high tree or frame would work.
Great shoe box! I'm copying a few of your ideas for my build. Thanks for sharing!
For sure!! Steal all the ideas you want (the good ones at least) and scrap the bad ones!
Totally SHOEBOX!!! Loved your build and importantly-attitude and Dad! And Dad’s shop! Need a video on Dad’s shop! 🙏
Thanks so much! Appreciate the support! I’m working on a shop tour video in the next few weeks!
Great job on your truck camper. Thanks for the great videos.
Thanks! Appreciate you!
Fabulous build with dad . Plus a road trip with him .
Thanks! it was great!
The sloped roof was a really good idea. Plain galvanized sheating would have worked better than the corrugated. The weak link is the seams. If you use silicone on the seams there is no worry there. Water mitigation and water intrusion are a very big area of focus for any camping situation. Properly maintained, the wood stove is a great option for camping.
Thanks! The weak link is definitely I. The seams! I did some caulking and it has helped but we will see how it holds up! Wood stove has been great to me! Thanks for watching 😝
Shoe box. Great job man. This was a beauty project to watch and I hope you get many years of adventure out of it. Cheers from southern Ontario.
Thanks so much! Appreciate those words and I’m glad you enjoyed the process. The shoe box is alive and well!
Great video, Awesome Dad! Awesome camper! Thank you! God Bless!
Shoebox is a Beast. This video has pushed me to do this on my superduty. Cheers!
This gets me stoked! if you have any questions about your build don't hesitate to ask!
Shoe Box - don't forget a smoke alarm and a CO2 alarm! Looks great and I love your workmanship. Blessings.
absolutely! it's already installed. Thanks for the kind words, have an awesome day!
Looks great lot of fun to make very inspiring all the best
Shoebox nice, enjoy it you will. No questions. Thanks for sharing.
Shoebox is awesome. Planning a build - great info. Thank you.
Camper looks great
The Shoebox is amazing! Yall should be very proud. ❤
Appreciate that!
Great job, I enjoyed watching your build.
Thanks for watching!
The sheet metal on the outside brought it over the top!! The best looking built on UA-cam BUY FAR!!!
haha really appreciate that!! Thanks for the support!
THE SHOEBOX IS SO AWESOME LOVE IT
Nice build. I like the name. The roofing metal is tough to seal on a curved roof going crossways & I would install sides horizontally (rear vertically ok.) Enjoy the camping!
I'm glad you like it! I wish i could have installed the metal that way but It wouldnt bend with the curved roof so i had to place it crossways. Cheers!
The Shoebox is great! I'm getting ready to build my camper soon. It will be total privacy (no side windows). Instead, I'm going with a marine vinyl (clear 80 gauge vinyl) roof.
Great job, way to go
Be very proud of the end result- very, very cool.
Thank you so much! I am happy with it! Thank you for watching I hope you have a great day!
The SHOE BOX,
Yes sir I am so grateful 🙏 that you have your own build camper!!! This is way cool 😎! I am in a 8.5. X 20 foot car hauler trailer that I am building to live in full time, pulling it with a 2011 4x4 Trunda short bed, so I am way ready to build my own truck camper of my own.
I have been to UA-cam University for 14 years now and I have seen a lot, but I really like your build!!! There are some builds that are made out of pure foam 😳.
So I will combined the build. Thank you for posting!!! BLESSINGS TO you and yours!!! Merry Christmas!
Thank you for your kind words! I wish you nothing but the best on your build and hope you have fun in the process! if you even take one idea away from my camper (even if it's one thing not to do haha) that makes me happy! Godspeed and happy new year!!
Absolutely a bad to the bone build!!!! That thing is solid!!!! And heavy I’m sure!!! It would be to heavy for my half ton. Great job!!!
Hahah thank you! It is heavy, but it does the job :)
You did a great job so nice to work with your dad❤
Make sure the air bag helper suspension is installed with about 1/2" pre- load and run separate fill valves for left and right then truck will be more stable . Do not run a T together although T gives more suspension flex with air bags plumbed together it will add more sway to Camper hauling.....
I Have a 3/4ton 8ft bed truck, And I had a realy old fully equiped Pickup camper that I got for $500. My Dad and I Hunted every year out of that for about 6 years Dad loved it !
My Dad died in 2014 88yrs old.
Shoebox You built my Dream Home something small but also roomy I really like it!!
Your camper is really nice, you did a great job.
Thank you! I appreciate that!
Fantastic job!
Thank you! Have a great day!
Man that camper is huge on the inside. Nice work.
probably the biggest possible rig on the truck hahah but its lavish when you get to the camp site
This is so cool. Great build. Hello from Indiana.
Sweet build, sweet shop! Came out great, read in another comment u got bags for the suspension, good choice sure it helped a ton with the load n sag. Nice to build something like that with your Pops. Enjoy it, look forward to upcoming videos 🤙
thanks for watching! Building it with my dad made it all that much better! also airbags really did help! Lots of new videos coming soon starting this Sunday!!
Shoebox - this is a wonderful camper!
Thanks!
You're very skilled great attitude and vision
Shoebox is awesome!! Hope you have enjoyed your hard work. Stay safe , look forward to see more of your videos!!
Thank you! I have definitely got to enjoy it :), more vids to come!
You guys did a great job.
Thank you!
Lot of work and great detail. One problem would be the over engineering. Bullet proof I would say. Designing my own camper build and you gave me some good ideas. I like the overhang in the rear, prevents rain from getting to the back door. Weight is an issue.
Thank you! I totally, agree with you and that's why I made this video, hoping that people can learn from my mistakes and maybe take some inspiration. I love the back over-hang, and I think lighter weight would be awesome!
@HondroB hugood morning hugs blessings s Jesus i kind of like.tje way they builded 🎉 like a house it's a little too heavy side happy safe week good job all
The Shoebox looks excellent. I think your dad's house building expertise is shining through a bit in the wiring (those twisty knob wire connector things are not really for things that move), but I'm sure you've figured that out by now :P
Thanks! Haha that is so true! I know those connectors are probably not the best, but they have held up so far. But I have no issues changing them if they start to fail.
Shoebox! This was awesome - really inspiring.
Ahah ah thanks! So happy to provide some inspo! Just takes a hair brained idea and some elbow grease and you can do some fun things!
cool work man! inspiring
Appreciate that! Hope all is well!
Great build
Nice job, know you and dad had lots of fun.
Thank you! Appreciate your comment!
Impressive! 🙌
Amazing build 🤘🏻🏞️
That’s a great name “ the shoe box”! And great job with the build!
I'm glad you like it!! the sign fell off though!! I need to re-hang it
Cool build brother !!! I'm trying my 2000 Chevy Silverado for my build thanks for all the ideas ...
Awesome! Good luck and have fun!! If you ever want to shoot me ideas or questions feel free!
Very nice Truck Camper !!!
Thank you!
Love how you built it on the dolly.
Thanks! The dolly was so helpful!!
Commend the effort, and don't mean to be critical, but there are a lot of built in issues with this build. Number one has to be weight due mostly to full 2"x4" framing.
Other issues will be the lack of thermal break and a water tight or resistant membrane between metal siding, roof, and wood structure which will cause moisture build up under metal, evidence of which was the water on the ceiling which likely wasn't an actual leak but condensation due to cold outside temperatures and the warm to hot interior extracting moisture from the air that condenses on the metal.
I suggest pulling the metal and applying some form of a thermal break and moisture/leak prevention membrane
As it appears, this is a summer 'only' camper and in its current state has no need for a stove.
I grew up in the Okanogan Valley just about 50-miles south of the border. We were often up into Okanagan, to Penticton, Kelowna, and other points north as my dad was an avid golfer and as an avid fly fisherman and head of the Okanogan County Health Dept was doing research into the condition of, and how to clean up of the Okanogan River and Okanagan Valley systems.
Looks 👍 from Kansas mate, we all know home built is the best!!! God watch over you and the family this new year.
So cool! home built sure is hard to beat! Thanks so much for the warm wishes, all the best to you!
@@HondroB I have no idea if you're building them for a living,if you're not you should be, from what I seen I really think you have a talent, obviously you have what it takes!
@@jeffsmith6459 I'm currently not haha! I'll have to think about it though, maybe one day!
☕️☕️☕️ My 1st time watching the shoebox💙💙
Aw cheers! Hope you enjoyed! I got some coming soon!
Really, really cool.
Appreciate that!
RIGHT ON GR8 BUILD,
2 ME THE MOST IMPORTANT WAS SPENDING TIME AND BUILDING WITH UR POPS. ME AND MY DAD R TRUCK DRIVERS, HE'S 80 AND IM 56 AND HE NEVER SPENDS TIME OR DOES ANYTHING WITH ME ALL MY LIFE. SAD 2 SAY HE DOES WITH HIS NEW FAMILY. U ALL R VERY BLESSED HAV A GR8 DAY AND ENJOY THE CRUZ.
Thanks so much! Building with my dad was an awesome experience. That's sad to hear but i hope you can enjoy more time with him soon. Happy trails and thank you again for the kind words :)
Great job, new skills are the real payday. Bob in Nevada
Thanks bob! You are right! This is where I learned lots of handy skills and I’m thankful for that!
Flex tape products work very well.
I live in a mobile home.
Trust me when I say it works very well. Spray rubber and the flex tape.
Flex tape is great!
Shoebox.
Great build man. I'm sure living it it for four months taught you a lot about its construction. Good or bad, they're learning opportunities.
Do you happen to know what the end weight was?
Also, if I may make a suggestion? An airbag system for the rear suspension would help the vehicle out a lot. Plus you'd have the benefit of having an air compressor and tank on board for endless uses. Just a thought from someone who used to be an auto mechanic.
Enjoy your build, stay cool!
Thanks for the comment! So many learning lessons which was a blessing, at the end of the day it’s about developing the skills 🤔. End weight was around 1200 lbs dry. I did install airbags after the first 2 weeks and it made a world of a difference! Happy new year!
Great job 👏
Thanks!!
That's awesome and I have always wanted to build a modern day gypsy wagon. Mini house
the shoebox looks Fantastic love it keep up the good work
Thanks so much! I absolutely will.
Cigarbox nice build looks great thanks for posting 👍
Haha thank you! Glad you enjoyed 👍🏻
This is exactly what I want to and plan to do, buy a truck and build a camper on it, then travel up the rocky mountains into Canada and eventually Alaska.
that is such an awesome goal!! hey maybe we will cross roads some day, Alaska is a must!!
Good looking Shoebox! Makes me want to look into building my own. Accept with an Air conditioner and toilet.
Thank you! You absolutely should! thats the beauty of building your own rig, its yours to customize!
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL 💐❤️!
I want a shoe box. Lol. Nicest shoebox I've saw yet. Be safe in your travels. Enjoy every slope.
Thank you so much! I’ll enjoy the slopes. Have a great day!
Hi hondro, I subbed, great job on the truck camper build, this is something I also have in mind to build myself and travel to Canada.
Thanks so much! I hope it happens one day! Just don't forget to install a heater!
Wowwww!!!! Nice job goodluck!
Thank you so much! have an awesome day!!
Wow. Impressive home build ! I’m jealous of your windows, as the single pane/aluminum frame ones in my 1979 Okanagan truck camper hate cold weather ! (also BC interior, Penticton) Was hoping to see what you did on the outer edge where the roof meets the siding, to seal it up. Cheers and Happy Trails ! 🌲🤙
