You have good ideas on your camper build , thanks for sharing them !! I have worked out of and lived in my campers for years ...skiing , fishing , riding etc ....I built racks for all my campers and I don't bolt them on top of roof but instead on the sides . That way no problems ever with leaks . I run a Thule cargo pod for my skis up On rack and a solar panel . On one camper I installed a 1930 something wood burner pot belly stove too ... They work great 👍!! Ok have a fun season and be safe .... Just got 4 ft. Of snow here in the sierras ....!!
Awesome dude! I'll be passing by you guys in the truck house on my way south from Alaska heading to the lower 48 for some work late this summer, maybe cya on the road:)
great job Mount the fire extinguisher next to your bed so as soon as you stand up coming out of bed you have access to the fire extinguisher and hopefullyyou'll never have to use this option but if you have to jump out the window in the kitchen I hope it's big enough for you and how to get out enjoy all of the days of your life God bless
Thank you!! thats a good idea for the extinguisher. And yes i can pop the side windows out if i do need to escape out the sides. Thanks for your concern!! Thanks for the kind wishes, God Speed!!
18 sec into this your putting on chains. I just tapped on this to see the rig and right off the top your doing it right the way you should do it.. I build the ice road on the foothills of the BC Alberta Access in the north in winter. Imagine a monster truck with chains but a water truck, 5 ton. This is the most fun you can have at a job.. It was fun you drive around doing snow fills, ice bridges, hill climbing, going down crazy hills for the first time that year trying not to crash.. lol And if you did you had a crew that would help fix it so you could go out again. Crazy it was like I had my own pit crew.. lol Camp life at it's best to.. Hope to see on the road someday.. Take care be safe God bless
When it comes time to get a new battery, there are new types that can safely be drawn down to zero, no damage to battery. I don’t remember the type, but remember that Battle Born solar sells them in Nevada… If you get tired of looking at the insulation, go to a fabric shop and look around for a cloth you wouldn’t mind looking at, then staple it in place. You’ll still be able to use the roof and walls as a cork board as well… Great build, great video!
Totally right! To be honest I hardly even need the battery I have because I don’t use that much power. The battle born’s and other lithium’s are great because of low weight, drawing it down to zero power, and life expectancy, however they are quite expensive and they cannot be charged in extremely low temperatures. The one advantage for me with an AGM battery is I can draw from it and charge it in -20 degree Celsius (which is common in our Canadian winters)
This is exactly what I was looking for! I'm having a hard time deciding where to start with a short bed (I also dont have 4x4) with it being light enough for my little truck to support a build.
Glad you found the videos! It's really hard with the short beds, and there is not many campers out there. If you're building one I definitely recommend keep it small and lightweight. You won't be mad about it in the end!
Closed cell spray foam is structural , so minimize frame, skin with alum if possible (especially roof, single sheet) then spray foam from commercial insulator (dont take a chance on a mis- mixing) 1x3 pine furring straps can work well. Also consider skinning thin plywood sides with fiberglass. .
I love the wood stove thats what you need if you live in cold country and the scenery outside will be nice to see while the chimney is blowing smoke. Please have a video where your camper is a background while the chimney is blowing smoke outside, it would be a fantastic scenery.
FYI (love the vids) tire chains on only the rear will have your front skating off camber as front lock well before rears. I ALWAYS use 4 of either cables or chains
Okay great thanks for the comment! I put 2 on the back because I was climbing a hill for 14 Km’s in 4 wheel drive low (under 20 km/h) I put them in the back because that is where all the weight is with the camper. If I put one on the front and one on the back (diagonally) will that work? Or both on the front?
Some ambos have fiberglass interior cabinets which can be sourced in scrap yards. I am tearing one apart currently (2014) thag had fiber and not 3/4" ply....WAY lighter.
just got a short bed taco and have switched to a work schedule where I have 2-3 months off each year. Hoping to do something like this for my next off-season!
Well I don’t feel so bad about my weight on my Trd Tacoma now. My Kimbo camper is around 1000 pounds and I also have airbags and E rated Falken tires. I usually travel without the camper stands to save 100 pounds. I don’t have a kitchen, as I use REIs Jetboil. I use a 5 gallon bucket & bags for emergencies instead of a bathroom.
Sounds like a good set up! In my opinion pretty much any full size truck camper is gonna be pushing the tacos limit, but so far, no signs it can't handle it.
Nice Rig. Strong work. I especially appreciated your encouragement that you offered at the beginning of the video - Very kind. I needed to hear that. On another note, I have had problems with moisture accumulating beneath my mattress in my rig- the solution? HYPERVENT - its a plastic comb-like stuff that you put underneath yer mattress and it enables air to circulate under there, thus preventing moisture and subsequent mold probs. The stuff is pretty dreamy.
Glad you enjoyed! Sorry for the late response. That stuff sounds awesome. is the honeycomb material heavy? I have standard bed slats under my bed which do the trick but are heavy...
Plaster can be found both inside and outside homes. Exterior cement plaster is used in the construction of buildings, and it doesn’t need to be waterproofed because it is made of cement. It is also a very strong material, and even without paint, it can withstand extreme outside conditions. foami camper - UA-cam
Great use of the space! Like your layout👍 The wood burning stove🔥: perfect heat source!! Ideal set up for ski/ Camping!! Haven’t seen your fire extinguisher? I think your accommodations are fantastic! 👍 nice job! B Deacon Manitoba Canada 🇨🇦
Hey Barry! Thanks for the comment! The wood-stove is the best! I keep my fire extinguisher underneath the sink. Winter camper is the best! Cheers!! 🇨🇦🍁
You did a great job overall. WIth the interior covering what about using just a fabric on the walls and ceiling? It would be lightweight, cheap and easy to put up and change with just push pins.
Awesome! I'm currently looking for ideas for my Tacoma too. Nice to see a lightweight DIY build. Maybe you could paint or burn in N, E, S, W on the sink cover to distinguish the correct placement and fit in with a travel theme haha.
Awesome good luck with your build! if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask! Thats actually not a bad idea! maybe I'll burn in an arrow or something haha
That wood stove is so cool. That’s going to be the main thing I put in my camper. My frame will be square aluminum tube with cranking jacks. Expensive bu worth it. Nice job my friend. God Bless and enjoy 👍🙏
Good job man! Sweet build, nice work on keeping the weight down. You're your harshest critic. Most of those imperfections you notice will never be noticed by others.
Place a membrane under the roof. Metal expands and contracts and should be allowed to. It never truly seals, that is the job of the membrane .Caulk will never seal it.
Very nicely done, I can tell you are very proud of your camper, as you should be. You did a great job on the build and you built it yourself. @@HondroB Sorry to pounce, nice job. Working on Mk3 myself and thinking already of Mk4. I'd be tempted to look at framing with the metal stud framework, skinning with plastic, welding the seams, riveting to framework or fibreglass over thin ply base. cheers
Glad you enjoyed!! I use public washrooms such as rest stops, McDonald’s or nature 😂. As for showering I have a portable shower bag for summer, or sometimes I’ll pay for a drop in at a public pool to hot tub and shower 😅
I absolutely love your build! Very well done, great job. I've been building my own the last few weeks and have taken a lot of inspiration and ideas from you. I'm also building mine for a snowboarding focus camper in Washington state. I'm going with a diesel heater. I'm wondering if 2inch insulation foam is enough for cold nights? And do you get much cold air coming from the seams where they meet the 2x4s? Thanks man, love your videos!!
Thank you so much I appreciate your kind words. I'm so happy i could provide some inspiration for your build.. I personally find 2 inch foam to be great, if you are insulating it like i did, try and cut the pieces a hair to big, and cram them tight between the framing so there is as little air gaps as possible. Insulation works well as i sleep with the windows cracked even in the winter. A diesel heater is a great decision and you will be very happy with that dry heat source! Best of luck on your build!!
Thanks! It’s definitely too heavy! It was our first built and start with no idea what we were doing! Lesson learned, but hey, she’s still a camper at the end of the day!
I would really like to know how to get a woman of you're women's calibur. She's amazing but as it goes for you're camper it's supper cool. Love it wish I had a dad to do something like this. Oh well. I can do it. Though love everything about you're hand built camper. Gives some great freedom. Awesome!!
Amazing build but a bit top heavy. I noticed in the beginning the truck really sways back and forth on a basic fire road. Curious what the overall weight is and if you actually went over your rated payload.
Thank you! And yes top heavy is right. To be truthful, I think almost all full size truck camper are top heavy as they are all almost 10 feet tall. I believe I am just bordering my payload.
I saw in the build you used a lot of side by side 2x4 in the framing, such as the cabover supports that run front to back were two 2x4s on each side. Would you do this again or do you think it was overkill and you could've got away with a single 2x4 on each side?
Very good question! I think it does kind of depend on the build specifically, aka how much weight is the cab over carrying when you drive? But overall, for that specific area I would do it again just because I think that’s a really important piece for structural integrity
Very nice design, very practical! I wonder how do you register such a camper in the US. Here in Europe we have to go through different state inspection where gaz, electric, weight and others will be reviewed thoroughly before you can get your title. Are similar rules from state to state in the USA? Are you covered by your insurance in case of hazard? Again congrats on you achievement 👍
Hey Phil! Glad you enjoyed it. I am actually from Canada. There are no requirements needed over here which makes it easier for me. Homebuilt campers are fairly unpopular here. I can get it insured if I want to in case of hazard but right now it's not.
I want to build a camper just like this one, I have a few questions. Do you have a framing plan that I can use for my build , also what size is your truck bed and is your truck a 1500 or half ton truck. Thank you in advance for any help
Hey honestly i dont really have the answers for my truck cause i'm away from it right now. I dont have a framing plan for you im sorry - i have really basic drawings of dimensions in the link below but i do have a framing video (part 1) of my camper build and that is probably the best bet for following along for a similar framing build hondro.squarespace.com/blog/free-camper-drawings
I actually like the look of the exposed insulation. Plus you will be able to see if you have mold build up or leaks before they do major damage.
Thats a good point! I don't mind it either!

Maybe make a version thats mostly aluminum framed with with composite cabinets would save a lot of weight.
Wood is lighter. Aluminum is hard to work with
There are lots of ways to save weight, I had to learn that the hard way. I went with wood for ease of use.

Just thinking about how someone took the time out of their day to dislike your video 🙄 great video bud 👌🏼
hahah appreciate that!
Amazing !! Great job !!
Thank you
How do you get Jacks for diy truck campers
They are hard to find but now my go to is the broohy cable camper jacks (I use the 3000 lbs ones)
Awesome
Thanks!
Awesome job
thanks!
Loved the video man 💯👍👍
Thank you!
Impressed!!!!!. Very. Impressed. !!! (? How do u get up on the roof ?) subscribed. 👍❤️🇺🇸

MPG please. Curious
It hovers between 13-15 mph depending on hills, wind and speed.. but 14 mpg is average for me
Love it not for sale eh?
Haha maybe for the right price. I think I’ll hold on to it a little bit longer 😅
