History of iCloud

  • iCloud was introduced in 2011, but its cloud-computing technology stretches back to the early 2000’s. But before we get into that, let me clarify what iCloud is for those for those of you who may not know. Basically, iCloud is a service for Apple devices that lets you store files on remote servers rather than on your own device. This frees up storage space on your Apple device and allows your files to be accessible from any device connected to your iCloud account. So if you take a photo on your iPhone, it’ll automatically be available on your Mac, iPad, and Apple TV. It’s a pretty cool concept that may sound simple, but implementation was extremely challenging and took several iterations to work correctly. To fully understand the role of iCloud and all its preceding services, we’ll have to zoom out and take a look at the development of the entire cloud computing industry.

      I do. The way I do it is I pay as little as I can for as long as possible, and when I start getting, “iCloud storage full,” warnings, I upgrade. Right now I’m on the 200GB plan. I know there’s other services, and some of them are even free, but iCloud _just works._

    iCloud is great on Apple devices. However, the iCloud Windows client leaves much to be desired, and file sync just doesn't work for heavy users. A shame really!

      Syncs PERFECTLY with my Windows 8.1 (Yes, I`m one of the 3-4 weirdos that likes 8.1, not sorry.)HP All in one desktop. I love it on there. and it`s amazing, TBH...HOWEVER... My Windows 10 laptop refuses to verify the installation package! I have talked to Apple support for hours, and the tech and I have tried to contact MS, which has pretty much non existent support, so I just use the online version, which works actually. I hate Windows 10, anyhow.... so, meh.

    People should understand the sheer importance of Messages on iCloud. Aside from your iMessages and voice messages being sent to all your other iDevices, automatically adding SMS to the other devices is great.

    I'd say mid-90's was the beginning of the modern internet. I distinctly remember running Netscape for the first time in late '94 thinking that this is going to be HUGE. I had dialup access from home through the University. Almost nobody (public) could access the internet easily until this time. I'm glad I lived this transition... at time when you had to know *how* it all worked, not just how to apply a filter to a snapchat image. :-P

      Chris Comments and? Apple has 2TB for $10, Google Drive will give you 1TB with that much money.
      Yet Google’s terms of service says that they have right to share and distribute the content forward when you use the service, and they will store the photos / documents / information about you when you stop using the service, you need to request them to delete all the info, unlike Apple. Apple doesn’t store photos, or share your files without your permission. Just go read the privacy statement and TOS of Google Drive and find about it yourself.

    • @motaat7643
      @motaat7643 6 років тому

      Chris Comments But Apple offers $2.99 for 200 gb of storage a month, therefore in theory it’s cheaper if you compare it to the capacity that you would get.

      But realistically who's gonna use 30 tb if you're not a corp? The regular user will not use 30 tb. I consider myself to be a heavy data user and I have l 3.5 TB on my desktop in total disk space and I am only using 2.6 TB.
      As for my iPhone, I have 256 gb storage and using 64 gb, and for all my apple devices including my wife's, we are only usiong 140 gb of 2 TB.
