Apple initially had no interest in releasing the iPhone SDK to the public or in opening their developer program to individuals, but they were eventually forced to (leading to billions in profits and a hugely bloated App Store shelf) because Saurik (Jay Freeman) leaked the iPhone SDK to the public. Incidentally, my first jailbroken iPhone stopped registering touch events today, it is eleven years old.
why can't apple just created an advanced user mode allowing all these cool advanced features to be used by techy users but the average user still can use their normal iPhone the same way
yeah, they could have done it like some other phone manufacturers... give you the choice but with a warning, that it will void any warranty and burn an e-fuse, i think knox did that in samsung devices
Chris aka Schulbus I think OnePlus's approach is the best. They have no problems with rooting/custom ROMs and I think they'll even keep warranty while it's non-stock
It's kinda sad Apple doesn't allow for more features and customizability at the same time. That is usually the number one reason why people either jailbreak or switch to Android or Windows devices (which is what I might unfortunately have to do, because there's just too little support nowadays for my device. RIP my iPad 4).
Patryk Piotrowski Alright. Just gotta make sure I do it right this time. The previous first time I tried to do it, I ended up failing the jailbreak, because my iPad version and serial number didn't match with the jailbreak code downloaded.
Hamdan Ali Ehhh...to be honest, the switch wouldn't even be that hard, considering I already have a modern Android phablet and use it everyday. It's just using headphones to listen to music that I'm not used to. darktennisball Maybe. I definitely will still try to make the most of what I have now and jailbreak it eventually, but even then I don't think my iPad has much life left anymore, especially now with most of my apps (especially the third party stuff) crashing more and more frequently and the UI slowing down to a crawl.
If you want to switch because your 6 year old device isn’t receiving support anymore you’re going to be very disappointed. Even flagship Android devices only get major updates for a couple of years, and Windows lacks mobile apps.
I still jailbreak old devices for a few reasons. 1. Disable useless fluff such as blur, animation, control centre and notification centre to speed up the device 2. Apple stopped supporting it. CoolBooter not only satisfies my nostalgic needs but showing how fast it was when I buy it. 3. Look for compatible apps. If I didn't get this app before they stopped supporting older versions of iOS, I can't get this app on any of my devices If Apple decided to make old devices unbearably slow, at least let me fix it. I own the hardware afterall
In apples eyes, you own nothing about your phone. Check out Louis Rossmann on youtube for some very detailed explanations on the bullshit they are pulling off.
This shit was absolutely essential back in the day. Watching this brought me back to so many memories with some jailbreaks being incredibly complicated and lengthy.
邱死神 having a jailbreak device doesn’t mean that they can’t use apps like youtube it can be the same and for some games that people who made a game and is too overprotective would do something that block others who are using jailbreak devices from playing (btw i don’t have a jailbreak device i know because *i seen people with one in youtube and from the guy who started this comment this is just my guess though)*
there is some inaccuracy in this video: jail breaking is no longer used to unlock an iphone for different carriers, the iphone 3GS was the last device to support unlocking. ios versions after ios 3 no longer supported unlocking. Now individuals unlock their devices using R-SIM or simply through their carrier.
You could unlock an iphone 4 with an early modem firmware 1.59.00 on ios4 and also there was a method on ios5 which alowed you to use any sim card with a activation ticket
One of the main reasons Jailbreaking became a thing on iPhones was that when the first gen iPhone was released, it did not allow users to install there own native apps, instead relying only on web apps as a means access to third party apps. This approach turned out to be a failure as not many developers jumped on the web app bandwagon and users clamored for native third-party apps. When jailbreaking became a thing and thus allowed for third-party apps this put pressure on Apple to open the iPhone up to native third-party apps not just web apps. Thus a year later, the IOS/iPhone App Store opened. There is some dispute as to whether the App Store was planned all along but just wasn’t ready in time for release of the 1st gen iPhone or if it was developed later in response to jailbreaking with Apple basically reluctantly admitting it’s totally close platform model for iPhone/IOS wasn’t workable without actually saying so directly. The former theory argues that Apple intended all along to have an App Store for iPhone/IOS but it just wasn’t ready by the time of the iPhone release so they held it back for a year. They pushed web apps as interim options for app developers until they where ready to announce the App Store. The other theory suggests that Apple never intended to have an App Store on the iPhone but that jailbreaking and consumer and developer pressure forced their hand. Under this theory, Apple only intended select developers to ever be allowed to have native apps on the iPhone such Google and Facebook, much like how some select software companies where allowed to have an app of theirs included in MacOS (example: Microsoft with Internet Explorer for Mac in early versions of Mac OS X). Other developers and consumers would have to rely solely on web apps under this supposed plan. Now oince the iPhone was jailbroken then Apple, under this theory, realized their plan would no longer work and quickly developed an App Store as a way to keep the iPhone still locked down but allow for Apple approved native apps to be installed with the benefit of Apple being able to uninstall/remove malicious apps if need be. Personally, I give more credence to idea Apple intended their to be an App Store all along but it just wasn’t ready when the 1st gen iPhone was released. Though it’s interesting that we a now seeing a push by companies like Google, Microsoft, and Apple towards Progressive Web Apps (PWA’s) which are type of advanced web apps, so web apps as a model for installing new apps on mobile or desktop system aren’t dead yet.
Jail breaking has always been apart of my childhood. I remember jailbreaking my iPod Touch and I almost broke it because I turned it off while it was jailbreaking
Miss the old days when you can jailbreak by going onto the website and press jailbreak button => instant jailbroken, no fuzz no buzz. Now it's more complicated and might no longer be existed.
@@Sektflasche and it's permanent for iphones 5s through X because the exploit used in checkra1n is a hardware one so it can't be fixed (jailbreak for life).
I remember when I was 13 or 14, I would jailbreak my iPhone 5C. The jailbreak was successful and didn't require a computer for each reboot. The only reason why I jailbreaked is because I enjoyed mobile gaming a lot to the point of getting either paid apps for free or some in-app purchases free of charge
Ok this is kind of dumb. A: jailbreaking DOES NOT unlock carrier compatibility by default. It DOES however allow unlocking of carrier compatibility through various methods.
Back in 2013 I had warranty work done on an iPod touch 5 while it was jail broken. And it was very very heavily modified with lots of tweaks, basically there was no way in hell they didn’t know it was jail broken. They fixed it and never even said anything to me.
Great video! I was an avid jailbreaker from iOS 2.2.1 to around 8, but like you said, lost a lot of interest once Apple started implementing the features that I jailbroke for
reminder jailbreaking should not exist as a concept and every phone should come "jailbroken". you should own the device you buy which includes all of the hardware and software
@@gamernation1829 That depends. I use both OS and I will say that android is a bit complex with lots of hidden features than iOS. But neither is bad. You just don't know how to use android or since you're used to iOS you expect it to function like iOS forgetting that it is a different platform. It's just like asking a Mac or windows user to use Linux. You can learn how to use android like how it is meant to be used in order to appreciate it. So far there is nothing on iOS that doesn't have an alternative on android. And even better, there are more apps and mods outside Google's Playstore. Android's open source nature means you have to learn how to make it what you want
@serendipity Because a jailbroken iPhone is the same as an android without further hacking or rooting. You have access to file systems, change the appearance and function of the UI, run emulators, connect several USB hardware. And with rooting, there's nothing you can't do. Even overclocking CPU, porting other devices UI if that's what you want, installing updates manually. So many endless tweaks
I remember when I first jailbroke my iPod touch back in 2011 and did it with absinthe and when I successfully jailbroke I felt like a pro hacker and seeing the app icon looked so different from the stock apps. what a good time
I did it once on my iPad Air with Pangu, and it was so awesome, especially the icon customization and free in-app purchases for a large number of apps. But after a while it stayed stuck on the boot screen, and i had to have it restored lol Havent thought about jailbreaking since then
Unfortunately I moved to android as there was a dry spell of devs making apps on cydia and claims that most of the dev working on jailbreak tweaks moved to android also not needing a jailbreak on android to do most of the things I was using cydia for ie Ifile itransmission, emulators even winterboard. I absolutely loved my 4s with 6.1 but that was the last iPhone I used.
guys want a tip? every time you open a video on youtube from a random creator make sure to always skip around to 0:40 in the video sometimes 1:00 . Usually thats when all videos actually start
Good video. One thing though; Apple, nor any other company, can outright void your warranty for software modifications. Hardware warranty is a separate entity entirely from the software and as such Apple MUST prove that the hardware defect was directly CAUSED by the software modification to deny service. US: Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects against this, motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/yp3nax/jailbreaking-iphone-rooting-android-does-not-void-warranty EU: Directive 1999/44/CE, www.piana.eu/root/ All just scare tactics by big companies. Would probably cost more to take them to court than just pay for the damages but this is just another illegal practise Apple and other giants seem to get away with.
Man this is making me nostalgic :’( I rooted and jailbroke my way through middle school lol. All that even inspired me to want to become a software engineer (not anymore 😂)
Most of the time Apple and carriers cannot tell if a device was jailbroken if you’re smart enough to reinstall a clean version of iOS before requesting any kind of support. I used a jailbroken 6s for a while with the app on the App Store you could download and it would jailbreak the device. Never had a issue with getting support. Even never had a issue when returning it to the carrier for an upgrade. Most people working the jobs tend to not care unless you actually have a device running at the time of inspection jailbroken software
Ngl. Jailbreaking your iPhone felt cool. You can finally have a file explorer, change the look of iPhone based from your mood, and basically feel like you own the phone. That is why Android encourages others to root their phones, because their operating system is an open system and lets people do whatever they want with the operating system. Because of this freedom, people with creativity can make cool mods to the OS, unleashing infinite possibilities. I have experienced jailbreaking an iOS device, root an Android phone, and Interop(erability) unlock a Windows Phone. It feels cool to be free from system restraints.

A lot of features today on the iPhone were once jailbreak tweaks. Here are a few... control center, show-case, live clock icon, touch features on the home button, notifications, assistive touch - similar to activator, allowance of ad-block apps from app-store, clear lock notifications, f.lux, ability to hide or delete apps, ability to reboot device without pressing on/off and home together... so Apple you didn't invent them.
Maybe you didn't check out everything you can do :P I can't live without a jailbreak. You can add tons of features & customization. Smaller volume hud, ability to ignore calls without hanging up (smaller call screen), ability to asign gestures for actions, and tons of other cool stuff

Damn all this nostalgia, I loved my Itouch 3g 32gb (with more ram :P) so much! It was my favorite device until my galaxy S3. Passed so many afternoons jailbreaking it. It was never very complicated but at this age (14) it felt so fucking cool to jailbreak it and talk about it in school. I jailbreaked some for friends and my family. Later I continued cracking things like my xbox 360, PSP 1004 etc... So now im 20, only use android smartphones and coding and doing my projects with electronics and other stuff. Thank you for reminding me this and for making me feel old now :D . Cheers

Damn I remember Jailbreaking the hell out of my iPod touch with iOS 4
David Perry same!
Second gen Touch?
That was meeee
why can't apple just created an advanced user mode allowing all these cool advanced features to be used by techy users but the average user still can use their normal iPhone the same way
yeah, they could have done it like some other phone manufacturers... give you the choice but with a warning, that it will void any warranty and burn an e-fuse, i think knox did that in samsung devices
Because of greed
Money money money
Chris aka Schulbus I think OnePlus's approach is the best. They have no problems with rooting/custom ROMs and I think they'll even keep warranty while it's non-stock
Money
It's kinda sad Apple doesn't allow for more features and customizability at the same time. That is usually the number one reason why people either jailbreak or switch to Android or Windows devices (which is what I might unfortunately have to do, because there's just too little support nowadays for my device. RIP my iPad 4).
MiREK especially as that’s where they get all their ideas 😂😂
Patryk Piotrowski Alright.
Just gotta make sure I do it right this time.
The previous first time I tried to do it, I ended up failing the jailbreak, because my iPad version and serial number didn't match with the jailbreak code downloaded.
MiREK if you do switch, it won’t last as much as that iPad did :P
1. Disable useless fluff such as blur, animation, control centre and notification centre to speed up the device
2. Apple stopped supporting it. CoolBooter not only satisfies my nostalgic needs but showing how fast it was when I buy it.
3. Look for compatible apps. If I didn't get this app before they stopped supporting older versions of iOS, I can't get this app on any of my devices
If Apple decided to make old devices unbearably slow, at least let me fix it. I own the hardware afterall
Harry Tsang I agree with the second opinion but I can’t wait until iOS 10.3.3 Jailbreak came out.
The 10.3.3 jailbreak came out ages ago
In apples eyes, you own nothing about your phone. Check out Louis Rossmann on youtube for some very detailed explanations on the bullshit they are pulling off.
And emulators so i can play snes and other stuff with friends
They made the hardware slow as a fix for the dying battery.
Privilage restoration . Because it's restoring my privilage as the owner of the device.
This shit was absolutely essential back in the day. Watching this brought me back to so many memories with some jailbreaks being incredibly complicated and lengthy.
I remember when I had my iPhone 4, there were videos on how to jailbreak it just so you can see the battery percentage
Am watching this on a jailbreak device right now

I didn’t read the whole thing but yes
I remember jailbreaking my phone to get text message time stamps lol
Jail breaking has always been apart of my childhood. I remember jailbreaking my iPod Touch and I almost broke it because I turned it off while it was jailbreaking
It kinda broke it actually, a bunch of the data was removed and the phone wasn’t jailbroken but it had Cydia
Miss the old days when you can jailbreak by going onto the website and press jailbreak button => instant jailbroken, no fuzz no buzz.
Now it's more complicated and might no longer be existed.
those good ol' webkit exploits... you just gotta love 'em since they still jailbreak modern devices :D
It's still around, although the latest web exploit (totally-not.spyware.lol) only works on 64-bit devices on iOS 10.3.3.
There's checkra1n now. Easy setup and the tweaks for iOS13 are coming.
@@Sektflasche and it's permanent for iphones 5s through X because the exploit used in checkra1n is a hardware one so it can't be fixed (jailbreak for life).
Brayan Nexon it’s tethered tho, so you need a computer every time you reboot
2010 was when they did CDMA too. it was with the iPhone 4
I remember these days with *free minecraft*
This brings back so many memories, I wonder if I still have my old device somewhere.

🤣🤣.
I remember that I used to jailbreak all of my apple devices. But since moving to android.. I haven't felt a need.
from an outsider's perspective androids seems to let you do more but are not necessarily ideal devices to own
@@gamernation1829 That depends.
But after a while it stayed stuck on the boot screen, and i had to have it restored lol Havent thought about jailbreaking since then
Remember doing this for kids in school for cash. Good times

One thing though; Apple, nor any other company, can outright void your warranty for software modifications.
Hardware warranty is a separate entity entirely from the software and as such Apple MUST prove that the hardware defect was directly CAUSED by the software modification to deny service.
US: Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act protects against this, motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/yp3nax/jailbreaking-iphone-rooting-android-does-not-void-warranty
EU: Directive 1999/44/CE, www.piana.eu/root/
All just scare tactics by big companies. Would probably cost more to take them to court than just pay for the damages but this is just another illegal practise Apple and other giants seem to get away with.
Wait, how does Samsung get away with Knox then?

Jailbreaking definitely doesn't void your warranty unless apple can prove that your device failed due to your modifications.

One thing we can all agree on is that the got good names; CheckRa1n, uncOver, Chimera, BlackRa1n, Electra. Apple can never come up with such names.
