History of the iPod

- Today we’re going to explore how the very first iPod was developed, how it was almost cancelled before release, and how it caused an actual explosion on Apple’s campus.
Now Apple became involved with digital music in 1999, but before we get into that, I want to point out that Apple was a much different company back then. They’d just narrowly escaped bankruptcy and were under tremendous pressure to start generating revenue for shareholders. And their biggest money maker was the Mac. In fact, they didn’t really make anything else other than Mac computers and had no experience in creating handheld devices like MP3 players. So with Apple in this extremely stressful and tight financial position, you probably wouldn't expect them to take a big risk and essential bet part the company on a new category of device. But with Steve Jobs at the helm, that’s exactly what they did.
I remember my aunt giving me an original iPod on the Christmas of ‘01 still have it till this day. Very beautifully designed product.
F Red apple is the one and only king of aesthetic design. Although they screwed up a bit in recent years,
@The Genius lol go buy it
i actually have one of the prototypes
@@ricardobastos1882 wat? Do tell
Wait what happens to your iPod that you got from Christmas 2001
Wow I never realized there was so much stress involved with the original iPod's development. And to think it's the most important device Apple created. Amazing!
@Jay Talents Not a fan of Apple? That's cool, I get it. But there's no need to be rude about it.
Nice take on the iPod, I was expecting more of general information about the generations as they went on, as we see in most of the videos, but this take on how just the product itself came to life was definitely a lot more original and enriching. Good job.
Holy shit audible has been around that long?!?!
Itz Terra yep
Feel old?
You didn't have to curse

The iPod was by far the most popular media player. When I was younger, it was seen as cool to have an iPod. Kids would compare them and see who had more storage and who had the better model. The Nano 2G and 3G were super popular. But the iPod Touch was the most popular by far. Everyone wanted or had an “itouch”. They were incredibly common among young people and were definitely a big part of the App Store growing. During elementary and junior high about 70% of kids in my school had an iPod Touch or used to have one and had a smartphone to replace it. They were awesome devices that introduced so many to the Apple ecosystem.
Tyler Beeson I agree. I got an IPod shuffle for Christmas and I sold it to put money towards the second generation of IPod Touch. I was one of the first kids in my class to have one. I was in 6th grade at the time. That’s how I got into the ecosystem and I’m not going anywhere

it’s not a history of the ipod because it doesn’t tell about every next ipod. please do another vid about all of them!
That’s called Evolution, not history
Excellently executed history! We all miss Steve he was a visionary with regards to consumer electronics and the ipod well it was a benchmark in portable music gadgetry!
Who Is Better
Like: iMovie
Reply: Adobe
Even though more expensive you can do more with Adobe
You can just Adobe off a website and it will be good for making videos like with after effects
2:04 that is the most early 2000s picture I've ever seen
Great video. I just thought you’d go all the way up its history. Not just first production.
Greg does have other videos that show the iPod’s history. Please check them out.
Fantastic video but it should be called the history of the first iPod.
Angeelo Gov yep, I wanted to see the evolution of all the actual models
Lovejazz01 Same
I still have 2 iPod videos and 1 iPod nono 2nd gen and an iPod shuffle. ... Love these products!
What's cool is that the first iPod shipped around the same time as Windows XP
My first apple product was the iPod Touch and I loved it even though now it’s bad it was good enough for me back then
I was hoping for more information about how it changed over the years, but this was good too.
I knew its gonna be different than the last two on the same topic. You didnt disappoint me
I just discovered your channel last night. I have been binge watching since.
This was a great bit of history. I like how you spoke a lot about FIREWIRE. I haven't used it much but always wondered about it. I mean Apple had it on their computers till 2012??? I think that's when it went away. Also, the info on the iPod and it's history is wonderful. I knew some of this but not all of it. Have you done one of these on the iPod Touch? Thank you for providing us with wonderful videos.
Never mind, I found the iPod Touch video. (:
History of the iPod Nano next :)
Imagine an iPod, but with cellular connectivity, that would be an amazing device
I've always wanted to know how it was named, so happy that you covered that in this video
7:58 The new GTA 6 teaser image looks great!
I still have my old iPod touch 4th gen. Still works perfectly to this day
I remember getting my first iPod in 2003. I got one because I saw it on 50cents P.I.M.P music video and thought it looked awesome ^_^ The 2003 iPod is still by far the sexiest and best iPod ever made IMO with the redish lighting on the buttons and the touch wheel. Sadly I lost it a couple years later by which time they'd updated the model.
Also I had no idea Fostex made Apples earbuds. Their T50RPs are really good, specially when modded.
This video was awesome!! I Thanks Greg for another great history Lesson I
highly recommend and respect your Chanel for its content and in depth detail I personally myself own the iPod Touch 6th generation in space grey 128 gigabytes but my 1st iPod was the iPod Nano 1st generation 4GB in white in 2005
my first ipod was the Touch 7th gen 256GB
since then ive become an Apple collector
keep you videos coming cause we love them!!!
So, because the “competitors” are always copying Apple, that iPod explosion was the inspiration for that Note.
I was annoyed enough by cheaply built mp3 players that i got in 2004 i think the iPod Mini and daaaamn.... biggest storage ever in that size, a nice, "legendary" click wheel UI and so.
Had it for a long time, even upgraded the original 4GB microdrive with a 64GB compact flash card, renewed battery and hell, BEST MP3 PLAYER I EVER OWNED (and is still in working condition, but inside my glass vitrine next to other iPods i collected 2nd hand/broken for the style)
This is incredibly interesting, true tech history
I wish Apple would bring back the iPod Nano. It had a built in FM radio that we could pause, plus it had onboard space. I do have the 6th and 7th Generation. Which is the little square one and the one that looks like an mini iPod touch.
miss the iPods wish apple could bring them back like the nes classic
Same, I miss the Nano and Classic.
I recently bought on ebay one of the first iPods and started using them
When the phones can do it the job of the touch, why make a lot or tweak them a lot.
I actually would love to have a 6th Generation iPod Touch tbh. It’s a good way to save data on my phone while listening to music and playing games
Same i love iPods
Miss Steve Jobs. 😢
Awesome job! I get a comicsexplained vibe from this
Jobs made jobs :)
The iPod Touch 6G and iPod Classic 7th Gen (Black), was awesome. And the best.
That cardboard mockup looks very similar to the 3rd generation iPod.
Great video, but there’s still so much of the story left to tell!
You are the best you tuber yet! I watch every single one of your videos
You made it sound like “oh damn, too bad 9/11 happened, iPod was almost delayed!”
Holy shit this channel is so much more in depth and interesting than I expected. Sub from me
lol i remember back in the day transferring all of my music over usb 1 and essentially just dragging my songs for an entire day. i remember when i got my first macbook i set aside the entire day to transfer my music and when i finally had everything on the flash drive from my old pc, it loaded up what seemed like instantly with usb 2. now we have usb 3.1 gen 2 which is too much of a mouthful. why couldn't it just be usb 4? or 3.2?
Nice Video... Love History of stuffs!
This was the item that got windows users to look at Apple Products. As they now had iTunes for windows on there desktop...That was the marketing genius.... Then the iPod Audio\Video appeared... You could now watch movies in high resolution. As the dock allowed you to port that video into a TV. Straight out of the iPod. No need for a bulky VCR...And if you notice. The VCR\DVD players are long gone...
I’m seeing this in a I pod touch 5 😂
I remember thinking that my iPod was absolutely the best thing in the entire world. When I got my first iPad my mind exploded. I never had seen anything better. (And in the trash my Samsung went.)
I remember the days when you had to download music off of your computer..... pff. No Alexa, no _real_ iTunes, nothing. Just CDs, a primitive iTunes and your iPod, which made you the coolest kid on planet earth if anyone saw you with it.
Apple🍎 has came such a far way
is that emoji after the word apple really necessary
I was just a baby when this came out.
5:01 - Que audible sponsorship
Still got my iPod Classic 1G from 2001
Ah nothing like watching a video about iPods on a iPod
I bought my this iPod November 2001 and it still works great 👍🏻

There should be a Magic Keyboard where the the charging port is directly under the keyboard.
please make video on Philip W. Schiller
And to think Apple Corps sued Apple back in the 70s and made them agree not to enter the music business...
I love this video! 💕
I’m watching this on a iPod touch 7
5:02 Yeah like don’t all know what audible is

He talked about how earbuds would not mess up your hair. How did he know he had no hair!
iPod Touch 6 lets go

It’s a fucking brick! Just joking.
This was Job’s real ‘selling’ Macintosh and the product he was born to deliver.
Why didn’t you talk about the touch, nano, and shuffle?
NoobishExpert it's more interesting to hear about the development of the original
5:02 I thought that was a sponsor
The iRver was better than the Ipod but then apple bought all the small hard drives up for the ipod.
Do the history of apple
I still got my iPod shuffle thank god I got it before Apple killed it
Still have my nano 3 gen and shuffle 2nd gen

good job 👍 😀
I won't be here for the next video, I'll be at summer camp :(
I'm not surprised if this guy edits his videos on imovie, listens to all his music on iTunes and has never had a smartphone that isn't an iPhone.
@10:15 Good riddance to that lame girlfriend. if he hadn't worked 18 hour days then we would have no iPod, and then he would have had no job, and with no job then he has no girlfriend anyway.
