Great video, I never had much luck with those expander tools. In a pinch with lots of heat 🔥 maybe makes it easier but not for me.👍Thanks for sharing. Also to when you do heat it burns the rubber O rings
Thanks for the honest review. I've had a couple of those types and struggled with them. without an impact it's very hard to hold a straight pipe without tearing it up. Some lube will help a bit. I bought the Vevor expander and am very happy with it.
A good 1/2 drive air impact is all you need. When I first started out working on vehicles was at a the local Car X over 35 yrs ago that was a essential tool still have it too
If I remember correctly, it works better if you take smaller bites. As for heat and the O-rings you can heat the pipe ahead of where the o-rings will be and maybe get it to expand a little easier.
Good video. I’ve thought about one of these, I think I remember a review that said… pretty much what you said lol. Looks doable, probably get one. I see that holding the exhaust pipe securely would be a big help. Thanks again!
Look's like a pretty nice tool! Thankfully theres a muffler shop across the street from me and alot of times they will expand a joint for me, but their not open on the weekends so a set of those would be nice!👍
Wonder if some lubrication would help? Grease on the threads and sliding surfaces couldn't hurt. Got an old US one somewhere, it's always done the trick. Also, I've got the same impact, it's not real powerful, got it in 1988 so it's old. For pulling wheels off a pickup, I almost always have to break them loose first. Haven't used it in several years I think it's in a friend's garage now.
Thank you!!!! I was thinking of this and thought about the same thing you just did! Yeah…. I’m on the fence. Thanks Tim ! I now know what I was thinking about. lol ! Live and learn! My luck is I would twist the end off.
Dewalt 20volt 1/2 drive has way more Torque than the 110v gun you have . I don’t even use air at my shop anymore and the benefits of having it with you on a trip to change a flat is really nice
Yep... I think putting the pipe in a vice would make all the difference... I hate exhaust work but Ive needed something like that for a long time. It's time... Im getting one. Thanks man.
I have one just like this. It will work with a normal 1/2" impact. You have to flood it with wheel bearing grease in side and out. Also grease the inside of the pipe. I have never had to hold the pipe with a vise.
The only thing I could see that might help would be to pull the breakerbar towards you instead of pushing away. I was cringing while you were pushing on that breakerbar and trying to hold down that pipewrench. Find somewhere to wedge and keep the pipewrench from moving, then pull the breakerbar with both hands. Don't injure yourself. 👍
A little oil on the threads could not hurt. Never had to much luck with my expander. I have cut little slots in pipe about an inch apart to bend pipe a little, then weld the slots up. Just to get a little bend in a exhaust pipe.
I have a good vice and an air impact wrench so it would probably work for me. But, I really don't do a lot of exhaust work, and when I do I have it done at a shop and it isn't terribly expensive so for me it's probably not worth it. It's a good demonstration though, and probably useful for some people.
Nice review, too bad it didn't work so well. I guess these things are too good to be true. We're either stuck signing over our pay checks to the muffler shop or piecing together a fix with piece parts from the store.
Where I live, they wanted $1000 damn dollars to put exhaust on my Dodge truck. Not even stainless. I bought a 3 inch mandrel stainless kit on Evilbay for $350 and did it myself
I hate these things. I experienced the same thing with my small impact. Then when I put more power to it I cracked the little wedge block. Got very little expansion out of it and ended up butt welding the pieces together.
You can rent these at advance auto. I don’t believe they are worth the money. Imho they suck and I have tried multiple different ways. I’ve just taken a piece by an exhaust shop and they just popped it in their $50k machine and in two seconds was done and no charge. But if you’re gonna weld, who needs to have it slip in anyway. That’s just my take on it…

Thanks for sharing your experience!!!
When using heat replace o-rings with tie-wire or fencing -wire.

Thanks for the tips!!!
Nice review. I have never had much luck with those things.
Same here
You and me both!
Rite, take to muffler shop and let them expand it
Rite, not really worth the time our money, couple bucks at exhaust shop and your good to go. Thanks for the reveiw.
I broke mine while trying to expand a 2 1/4 inch pipe. The expander destroyed itself. It's just about worthless.
A good 1/2 drive air impact is all you need. When I first started out working on vehicles was at a the local Car X over 35 yrs ago that was a essential tool still have it too
Yes, mine isn't that powerful
Good show Tim. 👍👍👍 A subscriber sent us one, awfully nice, Jeremy promptly messed it up with our impact, striped the threads.
Great to hear from Jaybo!!!!
I’ve had mixed reviews too, seems like the work okay the first few times and then go downhill from there. Good video!
Thanks 👍

Yes, holding securely is important. My 40" breaker bar will do the trick if the pipe doesn't turn!

grease may be a good thing to try! Thanks!

Awesome!

yeah, the torque that was advertised on the box was a bit more than I'm experiencing!
Yep... I think putting the pipe in a vice would make all the difference... I hate exhaust work but Ive needed something like that for a long time. It's time... Im getting one. Thanks man.
Thank you!
Good honest review . We know they weren’t paying you . Thanks for sharing
Thanks!!
What I want to say I can't . Like your content sir.

Thanks for the info! I will try the grease!
You are correct to be using a torch. No need fo the pipe to be cherry red. But heat will help.
Thank you!

Thanks, safety first !!
Sorry 318WR I’ve been slacking! I’m catching up binge watching and thumbs upping to!
Better late than never !!!!!!

Wow that was a great video helped me to make an informed decision😊👌
I think a little anti-seize on the threads and that may help considerably
Yes, that's a good idea!
Ive never tried one of those, but good tips on getting it to work.
Thanks 👍

yes, you have better equipment! I kind of live in the middle of nowhere so no place is handy!
All you need is a Chain Vice to hold the Pipe.
Thanks for the tip!
A sensible review
Thanks
Nice Duster dude. I'm wwaayy to poor to have one of those.
Thank you!
I got two of those things...(because I broke the first one)
I think I like butt welding my pipes together better.
Thanks!
Where is a good place to get a transmission mount.
All local parts stores have cheap junk that doesn't last 2 months.
87 dodge van b350.
Sometimes rock auto will have several different brands to choose from, I'd give them a try
Nice review, too bad it didn't work so well. I guess these things are too good to be true. We're either stuck signing over our pay checks to the muffler shop or piecing together a fix with piece parts from the store.
Yep, you about nailed it!!! I do think with a vise and a little more heat with a 3/4 impact, it would do better.

I had diffrent set off ebay, careful that it is fully inserted, if not it will beak the long pieces right in half.
Thanks for the tip!
i have 2 of them but they don't work so well you have the same issue i had, more heat Tim.. thanks for the video sir,
romans 1:4 KJV
Thanks, as always!!!!!
It’s not you brotha that tool sucks I was rooting for you though keep up the good work
thank you!
Just bought the same one.
I think it will work for you if you get enough torque on it!
@318willrun Yes, sir. It took me a while. But I finished putting exhaust on my truck.
Try a chain vise
Good idea!

Thanks! I'm a ways away from an autoparts store to rent from, I was hoping to make things a little convenient!
Thanks
Welcome!
Just but weld it 😅 it was perfect for it . I’m exhausted watching 😅 . 👍🏻🇦🇺. Throw it in the bin 🚮 .
it was "exhausting" 😁
