I'm a guitar wisdom student and I love it! It's completely changed the way I approach learning the guitar. I started playing when I was a kid (now 30 years old) but stopped playing during my teens. I have picked it up again recently and wanted to start from the basics and get a solid foundation. Tomo's style of teaching is fantastic, I keep the big picture in mind and approach it as if I am laying the building blocks for future playing freedom. Instead of learning a song here or there I feel like I am learning how music "works" and is constructed and slowly but surely the puzzle pieces are coming together. Every time I log into Guitar Wisdom I feel like I am sitting at an all you can eat buffet of guitar knowledge and it just gets me excited to explore further and keep pushing myself as a musician. New sub! I started playing guitar in 1983 at the age of 14. I've mostly played blues, rock and metal with my favorite being blues. I never really paid jazz any attention,..till lately. My curiosity is growing about the chord progression, structure and timing, not to mention the lead phrasing. I love this cascading chord progression and you've inspired me to take on outside the box/out of my comfort zone territory. I look forward to learning/improvising this. Thank you very much.

Tomo, thank you some much for all the great content you're posting. I was a student of Jon Finn and Tom Szymczak back in the late 80s to mid-90s, this lesson brought me back to those days. I've been on a 20 year hiatus from playing full time since joining US Navy after 9/11....now I'm coming out of retirement and dusting off the cobwebs. This exercise will be great. Cheers.

Yes! Do a good research asking people who took lessons from that teacher! Don't rush. You can ask any guitar forum on FaceBook etc. Definitely in person lessons are much better but skype/zoom lessons are great too! You can learn things from UA-cam no matter how many hours you spend
Great lesson. I love this approach to learning the guitar and I feel its definitely the way forward for me. One question though, Do you think it's worth learning a catalogue of licks and full solos as a supplementary to triads and areppigo practice? I like having great licks in my library but I find if I learn too many of them I just forget them. Would it be better to deep learn less licks, in different positions, fingerings etc? (make your own as you say.) ? Or should I just forget licks entirely and focus on triads etc?? Love your videos! Many thanks!

Hi Tomo, I’m a guitar wisdom student. I wanted to ask on your course, horizontal triads are played mostly on the first set of three strings. Should we practice horizontal triads on the upper strings? I’ve noticed they’re quite time consuming. Or instead use the 7 arpeggios from the root like you mention here? ? どうも

I have practiced more lower sets so that I have worked on my fingering softness and no noises. I prefer not prefer anything. Anything curious then no questions (myself!) just work harder! Could you please make a video explaining how to improve your tone quality, I feel like when I'm practicing my tone keeps coming out glassy and thin and it makes it discouraging when it just won't sound right.
That's so difficult to master because guitar has 3 volume points. 1) Amp Volume 2) Guitar Volume 3) Picking Volume Amp tone should be bright. Guitar tone is always FULL 10! Picking positions should be near the front pickup! Use a lot of picking nuances!

Get a hold of 'The Real Book'. It's a compilation of many jazz standards and has the chords and melody to them. Even if you don't read sheet music, the chord symbols will be useful.
Very specific way to learn jazz. For Instance, in this lesson, you can prepare learning these 3 topics: R35/R73... R35/35R/5R3... R357... Definitely you need to know what to do!

Great, that was good point to forget those 7th figures. I am all ready there, i can play the triads and something about the 7th arpeggios but i find very difficult to start making some "music", you know what i mean. Should i follow the melody? But then i sound just like melody, how to make this triads connected to the melody and make music? Thanks!
@@TomoFujitaMusic yea i think this wrong first, and did not get it match. So i played it "hole one string wrong". The song start rising from G to C, first phrase, i played it at start to C to F, and did not match. So every rising phrase was off beat and ended up wrong key.

So you need to learn Root 3rd 7th or Root 7th 3rd... you need to know about Maj7, min7, Dom7... 3 types. Then Triads: Major, minor and Dim. I have all these foundation video here. Just search. R 3 7 ... Triad... 7th arpeggio /
I really enjoy your lessons, but the user experience provided by UA-cam is the most miserable abuse of advertising I've ever witnessed. I know you need to monetize your content, but I really wish you who provide such excellent content could push back on UA-cam and get them to stop interrupting the flow of the video every 120 seconds. Seriously, 6 or 7 advertising interruptions and I'm only 15 minutes into the video. Keep making the great content and let's hope UA-cam eventually gets its head screwed on straight and stops driving us away from the platform. I never thought anything could be worse than cable TV, but UA-cam continually proves that it's the worst video content platform in all of streaming.
While I have learned a couple of songs from your videos, (mainly to lazy to work them out) like all of these lesson videos ,not just you there is too much talking, and then you start with the Chord gymnastics,by then I've shut down.

What's after step 3? How do do decide what notes to add after playing the partial arpeggios during improv?
After that... you want to listen good old jazz for phrasing... after 3 steps... learn basic ii-V phrase & some chromatic approach.

Thanks so much! Do transcribe music by ears as much as you can while you are building your foundation like this. Do hard work & avoid easy things!
Learn less information & develop them deeply. So learn one phrase and develop 5-6 different fingerings & different strings.

7th arpeggios are different topic! You can think triad plus 7th! then find many positive string set & fingerings. Fun adventure!

So you need to learn Root 3rd 7th or Root 7th 3rd... you need to know about Maj7, min7, Dom7... 3 types. Then Triads: Major, minor and Dim. I have all these foundation video here. Just search. R 3 7 ... Triad... 7th arpeggio /

I really enjoy your lessons, but the user experience provided by UA-cam is the most miserable abuse of advertising I've ever witnessed. I know you need to monetize your content, but I really wish you who provide such excellent content could push back on UA-cam and get them to stop interrupting the flow of the video every 120 seconds. Seriously, 6 or 7 advertising interruptions and I'm only 15 minutes into the video.
Keep making the great content and let's hope UA-cam eventually gets its head screwed on straight and stops driving us away from the platform. I never thought anything could be worse than cable TV, but UA-cam continually proves that it's the worst video content platform in all of streaming.

While I have learned a couple of songs from your videos, (mainly to lazy to work them out) like all of these lesson videos ,not just you there is too much talking, and then you start with the Chord gymnastics,by then I've shut down.
