    "The problem is you're chasing shapes " ! This right away is so true and such a simple and obvious truth too. Probably more than I'm aware of! That slightly frustrating feeling of "this just doesn't seem musical or freely improvised, it seems boring and predictable " there's no magic, but there must be ways and approaches that can change one's "ear" and playing.

    • @TomoFujitaMusic
      @TomoFujitaMusic  2 місяці тому +5

      Easy way is always has some catch that... not so good overall! Quick satisfaction! Practicing part, techniques ... not musical. But once you got material down then you can apply into music! Smart people tends to think... If I know these, I can improvise like that? Ear Training is so important!

    I've been going through a lot of your videos the past several months and it has done wonders for my playing ability. In my 20 years of playing guitar, I've done a lot of learning to run before walking, and it's led me to this awkward spot I'm in now where I've developed a lot of bad habits I'm having to unlearn and rework. Now that I'm starting to get serious about my playing, your videos have done a lot to put me on the right track. Thank you so much for sharing all your invaluable knowledge.

    Triads were my Aha! moment. Once you start seeing these sneaky little triad patterns across the fretboard, it makes so much sense as to you know what should be played over a particular chord. Thanks a ton Tomo for helping me visualize these patterns on the guitar. Love from India!

    Tomo is 100% right about using your ears, and not bothering with tabs. I have been playing for 10 years mostly “self taught” and I quit looking up tabs, chord sheets and videos of how to play songs.
    No matter what genre of music you want to play focus on the notes, and build the muscle memory. None of Tomos most successful students sound like him at all.

    As a lead player my biggest challenge has been to switch from "scale exercises" mode to "melodic phrasing" mode. When I spend all my time only running through scale shapes finding my way around the fretboard I loose the the skill of choosing notes selectively and purposefully to flow with the underlying composition. Lately I've been spending more time focusing on finding the harmony notes in the scale to create melodic passages instead.

    I can understand you because I learned theory from learning keyboard. I learned guitar for years and never learned much music theory, learning scales was too bothering, I just knew the chords. Now that I know scales more it's easier for me to build out chords myself, as well as improvise. Like you said about the counting system, it's all intervals

      Good job! Think about piano, and learn scales on one string! No shapes! Intervals = colors! Thank you!

    I think All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix/Dylan would be a great one to see you work on! I believe there's some very simple theory, but it sits in a very cool harmonic pendulum. And has some similar fills to the SRV two note part. Great path/lesson as always Mr. Fujita, it's amazing to be getting so much knowledge for free from a university level professor!

    I need to learn triads! I didn't know what it was called, specifically. I never started learning scale. But, once I began 're-learning,' it was always chords, chords, chords. You're right, a lot of times - with good guitar - there's too much fluidity to pin it to a single descriptive term (for lack of better wording/terminology).
    I haven't picked up my guitar in probably a year or two. Three or four if you discount the few times I actually did play for 20 mins or so. Although I don't fully understand all of what you're explaining, due to my own lack of knowledge, I love hearing you play and teach. Good to know you're still going strong :) Hopefully I'll catch my groove again with time.

    Oh, and the song idea is fantastic. I spend a lot of time trying to figure out guitar-friendly inversions for chords that are played on piano for popular songs. So many pretty ballads are done on piano and it would be nice to play them good enough on guitar. Plus on jazzier standards, I can never tell what the piano chords are unless it's some kind of blues.

      So great to hear that. I have learned HARMONY like pianist. Triads, 7th chord inversions with intervals really opened many doors for me. Yes! I have Jazz Standard section at my Guitar Wisdom. Thank you!
