Same here. And I don’t get along with most teachers. That can’t hang with me naturally.
I’m sure you might get that also. They just don’t like when someone has more nuance. But He has a whole different philosophy that’s all inclusive.
A real gift to musicians worldwide.

Me too. Triads plus the wisdom wisdom felt like enlightenment. Completely changed my approach and attitude. I laughed when Tomo said, do everything. The do-me-so triads, the note names, the scales in terms of root/flat third/fifth, plus the geometry of the fretboard in terms of intervals (this last thanks to Tomo suggesting I focus on intervals)... not to mention hearing everything, seemed overwhelming. How do you translate one system to another? But don't expect too fast.
After a year, for me it's starting to blend together. I even practice in bed, when I can't sleep. I think I can hear what I'm learned and I'm visualizing the fretboard and it feels like I'm "moving" my fingers.
Tomo mentioned that he reduced his wide interests to focus on the blues. I've been using a book called Blues You Can Use. What I'm discovering is that having "songs" you can play well allows you to try and focus on all of the above while you're practicing. Your fingers can play it while your brain tries to understand what's happening and why it works. Later, without your guitar, you can review it in your head. I've also noticed that it allows you to work on phrasing. I was working on a Delta Blues exercise and having difficulty with the fingering (not given) and the timing. My aha moment came when I realized that the call and response pattern dictated the timing and made the transitions easier.
Finally, the memorization is also interesting. I've listened to blues my whole life. Lots of different kinds. But the exercises aren't songs per se. So while I recognize many of the riffs and the styles, they aren't easy to remember or distinguish from one another. Because they aren't songs. The breakthrough was the phrasing. Beginning with the right phrasing seemed to dictate where the phrase will end. And a finger switch is easier when you realize that the switch begins a sub-phrase in the larger phrase.
So much to learn. But I no longer worry thanks to Tomo.

I am not confident some people appreciate the value of this (as a child I travelled each week in the evening after all other things were done to see my guitar teacher, now lessons are available any time for free to everyone). I think you had a great title on triads as I did not expect what you showed us and I was genuinely interested and rewarded when I saw what you were explaining. Perfect timing for this video. I’ve been doing triads for the last couple weeks and it really, REALLY improves understanding of the entire fretboard. Instead of learning one chord over the entire fretboard I found that learning the inversions for all the chords in a key the most helpful (first inversion on the top three strings for G-Am-Bm-C-D-Em-Fdim-G). Once you get it down for one key you know it for everything. Makes it much easier to play the changes during a song. Great video. We should all probably learn triads before cowboy chords…

Thanks for making learning guitar more understandable. I played for more than 12 years, before ever even learning triads, although I "knew" all 4th chords and that stuff (mostly just full 5 to 6 string chord shapes).
Now I'm trying to learn the inversions of 4th chords, and triads as well! It seems like a big project to learn all that in 12 keys, and feels kinda rough, but as you said, you don't need to go and learn this in every key right away! I guess it would be wise to learn some basics and start with an easy key and learn to visualise the chords.
I've now been practicing using different degrees of C major with triads and their inversions, and it feels great. Not trying to just memorize what the shapes are, but utilizing them in a musical way makes a lot more sense and puts passion into playing, and at the same time it is hard work like you say :P. Stuff like this is actually useful and you can use it to create something beautiful and learn to see even more on the instrument with new tools. But they need to be practiced first before it coming up in playing.
These videos are good motivation and give perspective for learning, as I am studying a music degree with electric guitar as my instrument. So thanks Tomo!
