If i was a car dealer putting constant work to a mechanic shop and they were telling me 2 or 3 weeks to look at a car id be finding a new mechanic. You may aswell be a man in the street
100%, and on one of the last few videos he did the pricing of the parts and repairs seemed like they were charging him retail not trade
Try and find a decent mechanic that will do trade plus private with out at least 1 weeks wait.
I do also think they take the piss with labour charges knowing he’s bringing them constant work and a lot of bread and butter stuff.
One of the most frustrating things about this channel.
That issue could be a big end bearing failure.
Get the shells changed, new gasket and bolt set. Head skim.
Bent valve at worse.
Could easily be a £500 repair.
Massive margin on resale.
Frustrating
@@eddiej1980 It doesn't sound big end.
Perhaps cam phaser being starved of oil?
I'd remove the oil filler, shine a torch inside, and see if it's full of gunk.

Poor car, people seem to think cars don't need to be serviced anymore.

@@reflexcoil9808actually, although this looks ok, ssangyong has a history of doing some pretty hideous cars
SsangYong has upped their styling game in the recent years. The original Rodius/Stavic was uglier than a hat full of arseholes, but it was actually a roomy and reliable vehicle. The 5 cylinder Merc diesel was a very solid engine.
@@reflexcoil9808 No? Most of them lol. Hyundai, Kia

Very good.
I think the engine is low on oil. Let me fill her up. That would fix her 😅
Is it sad that I've actually heard of this thing and seen adverts of it on TV?
Yes
Tivoli, I lov it. Stuck in my head for some reason
"Watch there be nothing under the bonnet". Priceless.
Would have been a bonus!!
“I’m expecting straw” - reveals an actual straw 😂
😂😂
They’re not so bad, it’s an economy South Korean car, cheap to maintain and easy to run. Edit: I just love watching these videos Matt, it’s a ride along into the used car business with a proper guide.
Another brilliant vid Matt. Keep up with the great content. I'd deffo buy a car from you, your honesty and integrity shines through as always
"People don't read the advert properly or the fine details" says the man who didn't read the text properly 😂
The oil dipstick is that bright orange ring pull thing at 13:12 hidden away under the bottom left corner of the engine cover.
We all make mistakes , usually down to personal misjudgement, but rarely see this presented in such an open and honest video. Appreciate your integrity Matt, expecially when so many social media and business channels present a facade of personal utopian existence.
One thing to check with a loud knocking noise is the auxiliary belt tensioner. If it's bouncing around in unison with the knocking then it's normally either a vibration damper or an alternator over running pulley. It's easy to miss and assume it's an engine problem because the noise can be horrible and it's a relatively cheap fix.
Which is why it's always a good idea to let the engine tick over while you have a look under the bonnet ;)
Tivoli backwards = I Lov It
Matt, the commercial for the TIVOLI I remember was a lovely dark metallic blue with a drone flying around inside it to show the internal space.
Some friends up the road have a farm and bought a Ssanyong Rexton quite a while back. I asked the lady about the car and they are delighted with the vehicle and have worked it hard on a daily basis doing the things farmers do. I'm not a fan of SUV's, so it looked like the rest of them to me. To be fair these are nice hard working people with children who need reliability in a vehicle, and appear to have found one in Their Rexton. Have to say Matt that we live in the far North of Scotland near John o Groats and the climate can be very hard on all vehicles. Take care. Derek.
That's a bummer, as it looked like a nice little car. Would love to hear what the fundemental engine problems was - but I guess we will never know. You win some you lose some!!
Ssangyong has for a long time been the fourth choice for Koreans, after Hyundai, Kia, and Samsung Motors. For a long time they were popular in the countryside and provincial towns as they were often big chunky SUVs....but a good bit less expensive than the other 3 brands.

I'm now totally addicted to this one man's efforts to sustain the motor trade....... Ssangyong ought to be fairly reliable, being built in South Korea like Hyundai/Kia...... The main issue I see is their habit of styling their cars like Buddhist temples, with unnecessary ornate body creases and lines etc.....
Actually I was once driving it a brand new. The sales man said to me that Ssangyong actually meant to call it an other way around ‘ilovit’ 😂😂😂
That’s the first time
I have seen one of these. Thanks for the excellent vid as always man 👍👍
See quite a few of these knocking around the costa del sol so I’m surprised you haven’t come across them while on your holidays !
Ssangyong is not under the Hyundai/Kia group. It’s an independent company. Well received here is Australia
it is under the mahindra group of India
Was until 2022
@@adityabansal1781 it's now under KG group
That's right. There is just a single model that uses a Hyundai Transmission (Facelifted Rexton)
'Well received in Australia.' So were Holden Utes, so what conclusion should we draw there? 😕
In India there's a car called XUV 300 based on the same Tivoli...as ssangyong and Mahindra had a tie-up collaboration...it did quite well here 💪🇮🇳
Matt you are a very very honest person and definitely deserve to do well in the motor trade
Another excellent video quite nice looking cars . Keep them coming 👍
True experience using Tivoli over 4 years, Tivoli other way round is I love it, it is a lovely car, with common issues, wheel bearing, door lock, AC condenser, 5k to 6k is correct price I guess for a 16, 17 plate, Tivoli can tow upto 1.5 tonne, better handling optional 4x4 pack,
The gag at 10:29 had me rolling. In fairness, I've never been in one of these and the interior looks (although I'm sure doesn't feel) rather pleasant. I wonder if they will be more popular here in London as the post 2016 diesel models will be a cheap ULEZ diesel mile muncher.
Good video Matt. Look forward to the next.
nice to see old style back great to see car with you for the first time
Coincidentally saw an 18 plate one go past me in white outside Starbucks this morning and my first thought was 'what on earth is that', but it didn't look bad at all - better than their Rodius anyway! Probably first time I had knowingly seen one. Remembered as it said TIVOLI on the back and had a 'funny window sticker' saying I LOV IT...
Apparently the name Tivoli was chosen partly after a place in Italy and also partly because it reads "I Lov It" backwards 😂
You stated in the video that SsangYong is part of Kia and Hyundai, but SsangYong, or as it has been known since March 'KG Mobility', is nothing wrong with Kia or its parent company, Hyundai Motor Company (33% ownership). SsangYong has previously been owned by Daewoo, SAIC Motor, Mahindra & Mahindra, and last year was taken over by KG Group.
Defo heard of a Tivoli, weird, nothing vehicle, bound to be cheap, no interest by most people, parts difficult to get, no dealers and all. Now seen through to the end. You are getting wiser every day, fascinating to hear your inner Sherlock at work, sorting out what the problem was with this car.Great, interesting video, Matt.
another great video matt....keep um coming please..👌👌👌
Love your videos Matt. Would love to see one about one of the Saab HOT Aeros, either a 9-3 or a 9-5!

I have a ssangyong rexton ultimate plus and really enjoying the drive ! I had a jag f pace before rexton, okay doesn't drive like a jag but its has a old style feel to them and charm , Sollid feel and Very sure footed driving ,been in lake District on snow covered roads handled it incredibly well ,has good 4x4 system ,good driving position ,good cruiser on the motorways ! I think they have got alot better now ??? Lol
I have a farmer mate that has had a string of Ssangyong Rextons. Great tow vehicles and endlessly dependable...
I was really hoping you had a good deal .enjoyed the video
My brother had a Ssanyong Korrando, the short wheel base one from the late '90's, with the separate roundy front wings. He loved it. He'd gone through multiple cars in a fairly short period of time trying to find one which didn't give him backache. He’s tried all those seat fitments, including one of those beaded things.... trying to solve it. When he bought the Korrando, the backache disappeared. He fitted LPG to it, and did loads of economical miles. He gave me a lift in it once, and I was quite impressed. Nice high seating position, decent amount of get up and go. Yeah, it was an OK car.
Perhaps, Ssangyong should have stuck to the Merc engines......?
The current model Ssangyong Rexton and Musso uses an engine (2.2 litre turbo diesel), despite being Ssangyong developed, is derived from a Merc Sprinter engine. Same part numbers and all.
chinese and then indian companies got there hands on the manufacturer and basically run them into ground, the chinese even stole a lot of the tech and transfered it to the parent company in china
I actually seriously considered buying one of these new. Then I realised I wasn't ready for my pipe and slippers yet came to my senses and bought a three year old Skoda Vrs five years ago .
I have both the Tivoli ELX diesel and a mk1 fabia vrs...
Hi Matt
I laughed several times during the video! Thanks for the entertainment while you educate the public about the Ssangyou, whatever, whatever. If you keep posting, I’ll keep watching. Hey, I have not tried it yet, but does CARVERTICAL work here in the U. S. ?
Great video, i love ths chanel ❤
Tivoli spells I lov it if you spell it backwards, Ssangyong pushed this for the car's marketing. It's always these sorts of obscure facts I wish I didn't know 🤣
Maybe they should have called it the Slianfogab 😂
Beat me to it on ilovit.
They didnt mention ssanyong tho, it seemed like a rebrand and launch at the same time
To avoid "obscure facts" maybe stop reading the first paragraphs of Wikipedia.
@@DiscoFang someone has got their c90 in a twist.
I just had to walk round my caravan loving neighbours to notice that one.
Matt, maybe its time for you to set up your own garage on site?
Rather than waiting 3 weeks for a garage, who I assume you take all your cars to so therefore bring them alot of regular business.
This will enable you to examine your cars straight away, service them etc, and ensure a fast turnaround of stock but it will also allow you to repair vehicles quickly in the rare event there is an issue with a one under a 3-month or extended warranty.
This typre of car is retailing for around £7k, so put a replacement engine in this one for around £1500 and you'd still be walking away with a £2-3k profit at the end!
Love your vids Matt
Hi only just started to watch these videos at the moment you seem to be a good trader which is good to see not too greedy on profit and you seem to be very fair to the buyer if they have a fault which is great to see keep them coming
It’s a pity about the noisy engine, because this car looks quite good, I really like the wheels too😊.
Hi. I had a ssansyon korando 14 reg for 1 year, and it drained my life away. Worst car for part prices in the world. My propshaft went, and to get a new one, it had to come from the Netherlands £1500. So I get rid. Great video
I remember the TV adverts for when they first came out, at no point did it mention they were a Ssangyong. “Tivoli, I lov it” was the tag line of the advert. I’ve only ever actually seen a couple of them
Wednesday night HPA treat. Beautifully presented Matt
At that price there had to be some issues and as the saying goes "if it seems too good to be true it probably is!" That said its not a bad looking car and well specced. Could be a bargain for someone with mechanical knowledge and skill and even if the top end needs some new parts - camshafts and valves etc there is a potential for this to be a good buy for someone.
If that Towbar is detachable the black bag is probably for that …
That bar should be detached when not in use, legally.
@@tarquinfintim5910 why? What's the difference between a removable towbar or a fixed towbar when not towing?
I had a new Tivoli in 2016. My first new car. It was the Diesel top spec. It was a bit of a gamble being a Ssangyong but they had just been bought by Mahindra at the time and I thought it looked quite nice. I loved it. Not fast but good torque on the motorway. Had it 3 years and no issues at all.
Looks seem ok not horrible or boring. Great vlog again 🎉
Wait the car has HDMI?Why doesn't every car have that?

I live in SE Asia, and was once offered a SsangYong by a German car dealing expat with a Chinese fighting dog pooch and a hot wife!!! Like yours, it was a bargain, cheap as chips, I can't recall the model name, but it a 2.9 diesel, huge monstrosity of a thing and the most intriguing part was that the back 1/3 of said boat looked like a lean to green house from the 70s....hmm....Korean "styling" is an acquired taste for sure!!!!!
I've had a Ssangyong for three years
I love it, would certainly consider another when I decide to change it
Love these videos matt
SsangYongs have always been massively underrated vehicles. The earlier ones were hideous, but they were generally reliable, especially the ones with Merc engines and drivetrains. I drive a 2019 SsangYong Musso, and it's been a fantastic vehicle, done over 150,000km (nearly 100,000mi).
Here in brazil you can see a lot of them because of the nearby countries having them but they're considered very unreliable because you cant really find replacement parts for it
@E It's always a problem when you can't get parts, no matter the brand. I've never had any major issues with my Musso, and drove it for over 150,000km.
The older ones are failing MOTs and ending up scrapped because of catastrophic corrosion near suspension mounts. That's just not good enough on a 'modern' car. Poor quality steel and poor rust protection, apparently.
When these were reviewed they were known for actually being ok to drive and quite good value. The best ssanyong yet. Then Dacia came along and they kind of got forgotten.
Dacias look really outdated and have incredibly crappy quality. They feel like 90's cars. It's much better to just pay 1000 bucks more for a better car.

The parent company is now KG Mobility, they are not owned or even part owned by Hyundai/Kia and they build their own engines.

I did see a dipstick its was tucked just on the left under the engine cover.
Also the noise on the corsa is the chain until the oil pressure reaches the tensioner not the top end 😅
Apart from that love the videos
Isn't it a hydraulic tappet? Sounds like the noise I had on cvh engined escorts years ago the tapping is the valve slamming shut
Dipstick had a red handle on it under the engine cover on the left 👍🏻
Phew i thought i was the only one that was shouting at the screen like in the panto...."It's not behind you it's just to the left of the cover you pulled off"...lol
Had a Rexton before and it was reliable no thrills motoring. Totally fine in general
I know what that top end knocking noise is. It actually means that your mini-cab has arrived to take you home from the pub. Which is a good thing. Every cloud has a silver lining 😊
I believe these along with the newer (2012 on) Korando are Ssangyong’s own engines. Heard good things reliability-wise. Slightly boring car, the Tovoli, but great value for money.
Heard of them, seen a few.
As for the awareness of the brand… the cars are soon going to be sold under a new name: KG Mobility. Good look remembering that one. 😅
Nice video, as always! Wonder if I could ask you a question: what recording equipment/microphone do you use? Thank you and cheers
“Watch there will be nothing under the bonnet” love it.
If your mechanics sit on a vehicle for months you need different mechanics.
Never seen one in the 'flesh', but I quite like this. For a cheap car, the interior looks pretty decent and being part of Hyundai Group would give me a lot of confidence if I were buying one. I'd have to drive one first, and do some research on durability and reliability, but I'd seriously consider one of these. Nice car 👍

Hi Mat, a few years ago the SsangYong Tivoli were all over this island of Menorca as hire cars, then suddenly disappeared very strange !!!!
Past three cars have been Ssangyong rextons, I'm very loyal to the brand, and also have never had any problems with them. Very reliable work horses.
You must have an OBD2 reader knocking about, stick it on & see what it is saying. Even when it isn't able to give you the manufacturers specific readout, you tend to get a good idea of what the issue is when its one of those 'some sort of engine problem' sort of cars.
I think this is rod knock or cam wear. OBD2 isn't going to help there, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to try. Best thing is just get rid ASAP, it's just not worth the hassle.
A lot nicer looking than the Ssanyong Rectum, as I call it. Loved the theory on what the black bag was for!!!

My parents drive a SsangYong, I learned how to drive in it. It's a 2019 Tivoli XLV, One of the nicest cars they've ever owned.
I had an early Musso. The fact that it had rack and pinion steering was what sold it to me. Drove well, was reliable, and could pull the side out of a house. Rescues a few stranded Range rovers with it.
And then u woke up

I'd heard of them, seen a couple and always thought they represent very good value. The ideal car for those who want a well specced car and couldn't give a toss what the badge is.
Ssangyong were going bust for years but were recently saved. No one wanted to buy them owing to the insolvency issue. Thus the cheap prices. Not sure about their build quality but that’s why they aren’t wanted in recent years
Could it be a 2nd hand bonnet? Hence why the model written on the inside
You should trade any Ssanyonngs to West Wales - the Farmers love 'em! 👍👍
Learning Korean Ssang Yong means a "Pair of dragons" written as 쌍용. See the badge. I bought the XLV version in 2018, with a much bigger boot and good spec, leather seats, reversing camera etc. Great value.
Doesn’t Ssangyong translated mean ‘bag of nails’ ? 😂
