- Can we break 85? - EVERY SHOT IN 23 MINUTES
A round of golf at Ellesmere Port golf course in England. It's a par 71 municipal course that was 5947 yards from the men's yellow tees.
The green fee was just £10 for a twilight round in August 2022.
The idea for this video was to play a poorly rated course in my area to see if the reviews were all accurate.
I'm James, a golfer with a dodgy swing now playing off a 12.4 handicap. I had taken 4 golf lessons to improve my swing on the day of play.
I'm looking to continuously break 85 after taking some golf lessons. Even if I don't shoot a good score I always enjoy strolling around the fairways of the North West :-)

The definition of solid golf with that many pars - well done James. You're so good with the hybrid and your approach shots are usually very accurate. Yes there were a few unfortunate moments but on the whole very solid. The progression from even 6 months ago is very evident and it's inspirational. Thanks
Cheers Dan, I was well chuffed with all those pars looking back. The hybrid goes around 190 yards and straight 9 times out of 10. I do work on it at the range and it is paying off right now on the course! Thanks for watching :-)
I was always soo sooo bad in the bunker but recently I have moved it to the back of my stance more and still aiming about 2cm behind the ball and I have started really connecting better with them
Hi James great to see the whole round and even nicer to see you there and say hello. If you don't mind going a few more junctions along the M53 then I highly recommend Arrowe Park, another municipal. It is £17 per round but much better than Ellesmere port.
Cheers Duncan, the course had a nice variety of holes on it and it was better than I expected. I will put Arrowe Park on the ever growing list for the future. Thanks for the recommendation and nice meeting you again. Good luck with your rounds for the rest of 2022! :-)
Excelle review and coverage once again. Its good to see what I would call an average/poor course. The summer has really effected the fairways and greens at my course too (not this bad) and its made it play really weird. I've recently picked up a 22 degree hybrid after watching your videos and it's a game changer!
Cheers Joel, I was looking for new ideas for videos and this one seems to be interesting for viewers. I might play a few more cheap courses as they are more realistic to what regular golfers play. Thanks for watching :-)
Watched a couple vids, steady golf mate. I like the wee modest tee/ball throws walking back toward the camera lol
Looks like a tight track. You played it really well bud. That swing trainer must be working I'm looking forward to that review! Thanks for uploading mate.
This course is better than quite a few public courses I’ve played
A solid round James, well done. On some bunkers with a low lip have a go putting out. For instance, the bunker where you hit the pin is a candidate for this. Looking forward to your next adventure!
I will definitely try this one day. Thanks for watching Tim :-)
Brilliant mate. I've followed you for a while when you were hitting 28-30 over which is where my game is. one thing I really like is how simple (and I mean that as a big compliment) your approach is, not trying the Hollywood shots, no trying to muscle a pitching wedge, instead just take a chippy 7 iron etc etc. Trying to say that you show the key to lower scores is keeping it in play, laying up, playing percentages etc. I've left my Driver out of the bag and also use my 22 degree Hybrid off the tee, as when it connects it'll go 200 yards. Rather than sliced into the woods (mostly). Great score today!
Cheers Tommy, I think I might make a video that documents what helped to bring the scores down. It's not long ago that I was thrilled just to break 100 and now I'm looking forward to breaking 80 soon. Thanks for watching and good luck with your game! :-)
We have a 3 day weekend on this side of the pond and this was a great way to begin it after coming home from work. Your lag putting is very impressive. That new putter seems to work well for you. Other than the 14th green the course didn't seem to be in too bad shape considering the dry weather we all have this year. Looking forward to your next video.
Great round James! Haven’t played Ellesmere before. Have you played Abergele or Pennant Park yet? Be great to see them on the channel soon
Some very good stuff played there Like you said started to tire out. But what cracking putts. Massive thumbs up 👍🏻 there for you. Well played.
Played here a couple of weeks ago and shot my best round of 88. Yes the greens weren't in the best condition but on the whole it's not a bad course. Few narrow fairways and good blend of shorter and longer holes. One star reviews are a bit harsh IMO.
I agree Ross, I liked the variety of the holes and the par 5s were all great. Much better than I expected and definitely not a bland parkland course.
I did well with the narrow tee shots on this day but can see how you could easily make a snowman if you were out of position.
Maybe the one star reviews were expecting Augusta for a tenner? lol Thanks for watching :-)
@@notaperfectgolfer3489 great to see someone giving some exposure to the municipal courses, especially ones that I have played myself. Keep up the great content! Maybe Augusta next 😉
Another good round, a fair review of the course, the extended hot and dry weather we have had this year is always going to cause issues with greens especially for municipal courses, so for £10 a round not too bad.
Taking into account the dry, hot weather we experienced this summer, I thought the course was very good value, certainly the greens ran pretty true, I did notice you were pushing most of your putts on the first 9 holes, you played much better on the back 9 when you stayed out of the bunkers !!
Keep them coming .... great to watch your round
For a tenner a round don’t think you can expect the course to be immaculate James certainly not the worst I have seen. The weather obviously hasn’t helped green staff this year especially in England.Courses up here in Scotland are certainly more lush but then we have had quite a bit of rain!It didn’t impact greatly on your game keeping it fairly consistent which is what most golfers aim to be.You seem to be hitting in the eighties most rounds which is good scoring based on your handicap.Well played again, always look forward to your videos keep up the good work!
Cheers Paul, I'm going through a purple patch with my game right now. Long may it continue! Thanks for watching :-)
Nice one James, another great video with decent golf. I would love to see some more of these review videos, I think they would do well. Reviewing the course and facilities for everyone to see.
Cheers mate, I definitely played better than normal on this day. If this video does well maybe I will review some more courses. I could document the facilities too like you say. Thanks for watching
A huge difference in your overall game. It is a pleasure to watch the continued progress and with such a great attitude to golf.
Tbh the course looks in better condition than my course (Derby). I see very tree lined, same as Derby, thus for a few months the leaves become a right pain. That said, once the trees have shed and the leaves dispersed, the course becomes easier with less tree intrusion. Thanks for showing.
Well done,i have followed your journey from high 20 handicap to now,the improvement in such a short time is really amazing 👏, looking forward to your next video 👍
Nice work James. Good putting once you gauged the speed of those tricky greens. Keep it up!
Looks like that round was well worth the cost! 83! Going to be a single-digit handicap before long. Great job James.
Well played James. Some cracking shots.
Another great video. Great job and your game keeps improving.!
Excellent course management. Played there years back. Council have scandalously closed brackenwood and hoylake municipals locally recently. So much for the benifits of hosting the open
James, great video thanks again. Are you staying hydrated and fed? I use one bottle per 9 holes and find it helps with fatigue. Garibaldi's are good for both short and longchain carbs. For 9 holes not necessary bit for 18 they're a must.
I drink half a litre of water for each 9 holes. I normally start eating nuts and sugary snacks at the halfway point of a round. Sometimes I'm ok but other times (like on this day) I run out of steam around the 14 / 15th holes.
I will look into changing this up as it doesn't seem to be working. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching mate :-)
Maybe an extra hours drive, but another good and cheap Woosnam course is Malkins Bank in Sandbach, South Cheshire. It's also £10 for twilight and £15 before. It has Woosnam Corner, some interesting holes. It's in good condition, there is one hole that has drainage issues a lot of the time (15th I think), but really the greens are good, the facilities fine, and the layouts are interesting for sure. Certainly worth a look James. Great content as always, thank you :]
Cheers Lee, I will put that course on the list it sounds like great value! Thanks for watching :-)
When I'm trying to work on my short game, I take a PW, SW and putter to the local par three courses. Seems to help a great deal. Your long and middle games seem to be coming along nicely.
James well played. You improve every round we see which is brilliant. You could try Meole Brace in Shrewsbury to follow on these cheaper rounds. 8.50 for a round and for all it is baked out and a bit brown just now its a great varied 12 holes for the money. Not too far from north wales for yourself.
Gotta come to Mellomar in Maryland. They used nasty swamp water to water the greens. Needless to say it killed all the grass. If I land it on the green I don’t even bother putting
Love your stuff James. But would love to see you start going for some par 5s in 2. Or bombing a short par 4. Great content
Cheers John, maybe in the future but for now I only go for par 5s in 2 if there is no danger. Otherwise I'm always staring a double bogey in the face! lol Thanks for watching :-)
Well played. Solid and consistent.
The long, hot dry summer has hit many golf courses, really hard.
Municipals probably more so due to tighter cost controls on maintenance.
James, your driver is coming along fantastically!! Another great round. Well played sir!🏌️👍
I used to play a public course that was like playing a links style with hard ground but not the severe bunkering. It's the oldest course in the area & isn't irrigated which is the obvious issue. The greens are normally pretty good with a decent medium fast speed but that's the only positive for the course. The 1st 3 holes are tree-lined parallel fairways & can be a bit dangerous depending on who's playing around you. Of course it's only $25 to play so I guess it's to be expected but I just can't force myself to play there.
For 10 quid can’t really complain 😂. Your putting is so good right now - that 28fter was too close
Naughty boy!!!! You put down a double bogey for hole 5 when you triple bogeyed it!!!! 3 putted my friend you clipped your ball on your second putt and it didn’t go in!!!!
Noticed that myself. Two-putted from 6 inches
Wow that putt on 13 was close! overdue making a long putt like that one mate haha
Couldn't get much closer if I had 10 tries! Thanks for watching :-)
How do you get 260 yds with such a short backswing? Enjoyable videos thanks.
High launch angle and rollout on the fairway
Good round, been playing Ellesmere Port for about 20 years & seen it deteriorating over that time, still good value for £10 tho, try arrow park if you can,
It’s a pity that brackenwood & hoylake have closed, they were good courses to play
Some big hits with the driver. Well played
Grew up playing there, Arrowe Park and Brackenwood. It’s never gonna be in perfect condition but what do people want for 10 quid. Especially with the extreme weather we have had.
What is a lag putt? Never heard that before
For £10 I was expecting a 9 hole course, but was pleasantly surprised to be playing a full 18 with four par 5s. Thanks for watching :-)
Well played. I agree with your point about the putting on the front nine, but we’ll played for a good total.
Well done James good round. Greens were a bit ropey. But for £10 cant really complain. Well done James. Love all your content so much, keep it up.
Cheers Chris, will do! Thanks for watching :-)
Think the main thing is what do you expect for a tenner. Courses ljke this allows peoole from all walks of life to enjoy 18 holes without great expense. I play alot at Galgorm Castle, but I always enjoy playin no matter where its at.
I love the layout of Ellesmere port. It gets very boggy in winter, and yes, the dog walkers are a pain, but for £10, a bargain
James - I see you use golfshot to track your round. Does it "trace" the golf ball as well? (I don't think I would try this, but what camera do you use to record yourself? Thanks - nice video and honest review. For $12 hard to complain........
I think Golfshot does trace the ball but I don't use that feature. I simply take a screenshot of my GPS yardage for each shot and refer back to it later. I use an Iphone 11 pro with a Rode mic to record the footage. Thanks for watching as always :-)
I have only watched one hole played , and to be honest this course will be amazing if they spend a little bit of money and time in improvements.
They need to distinguish fairway from rough. The greens need some tlc.
Maybe be too much compaction , hard to tell. You won't know until you get there and see it for yourself. I would definitely play at this course. Then put my cv Into the manager and turn the course around.
Our municipal course in Gulfport MS, (USA) is $25.00, in about the same condition, not as pretty of a layout, and is next to a sewage treatment facility. For 10 pound I was really impressed.
That sounds pretty grim having the sewage smells on the course. Still, it's better than nothing! :-)
I was expecting worse as I thought most of the greens were going to have no grass on them! In the end I enjoyed the round and it was definitely a bargain for the price paid. Thanks for watching Eddie
Nice play on a mediocre golf course. I’ve played courses like that before here in Southeastern Texas, we call it “cow pasture golf”, and they can be a test. All those leaves don’t help locating your ball. I’m really enjoying your videos, keep up the good work.
Cheers Randy, will do! Thanks for watching :-)
Great round James well done. Course looked pretty decent bar the few really bad green but it's to be expected after such a dry spell. And for a tenner it's great value. Keep the videos coming!
Cheers mate, for a tenner you can go wrong here. Nice par 5s and the greens will recover after this unusual extended dry spell. Thanks for watching :-)
If you pay £10 for a round of golf then one would expect there to be a reason why - dog walkers are a small price to pay as long as they pick up (I don't mean your ball). Hard to understand anyone leaving bad reviews for what is probably the cheapest round of golf they are likely to experience.
Yeah, maybe they played bad and wanted to vent their frustration?
Love the thumbs up after your shots lol
love the thumbs up after every shot lmao
Shame about the patchy greens, but overall not bad for the price. Plenty of tight holes. I’d have to tee off with a five iron on many of them. ⛳️
How do you get the tracer on your shots mate
Shot Tracer Pro app
Watched your wtb and just shows you don't need clubs worth ££££££s to enjoy goly, swing coming along nicely 🎊🎉🌟
I would definitely play this course if I lived around there.
!8 holes, good fees. I play like you do, but really like being outside.
Its all good. Well Done.
Me too, for a tenner you can't go wrong. Four par 5s too which is great! Thanks for watching :-)
Keep up the good work 👍👍
Well done James, you really would lower your scores by taking a bucket of balls and practicing your bunker shots...Well done mate 👍
I've got a new SW on order as the one I'm using is not up to the task. My current SW (54° Callaway Big Bertha 2002) has a massive cavity back which often bounces on contact with the sand. Thanks for watching :-)
Well played James l still think your putting was not bad on those greens maybe you have to give some attention on your lining up thanks for the video.
Cheers Dirk, I really should have hit some practice putts before teeing off. Thanks for watching :-)
Solid James!
Loving the content 🏌️
Totally agree with you that it’s not the right strategy to start going for par 5’s in two etc, etc.
Your course management is the reason the handicap is tumbling down. You’re nearly a single figure handicap golfer!
*After that second shot:* ⭐ 🤣🤣
Course looks fine - for £10 that is amazing considering how expensive green fees can be sometimes.
Played on alot worse courses, looked tight off the tee, played well mate 👍
New sub. Some nice shots
half swing 22 degree further than tour average. ok
ua-cam.com/video/O0LboHF7Q1M/v-deo.html My average distances are all here in this video
I agree. Something is not right here. He hits huge yardage with a very poor half swing and no follow through on all these videos. His lag putting is crazy good also???
Shame about some of the greens but 10 pound a round looked good value to me. Golf is looking steady James would like to see you hit a few long irons rather than rely on the hybrid so much just to mix it up
I would but the 22° is like clockwork at the moment :-)
Wow 265 yard drive with that swing is awesome
Nice rollout on that one, definitely got the forward bounce! :-)
James, I think it's time for you to get fitted with a set of clubs. Great videos BTW. Ellemere looks like a course I would avoid.
Course looks okay to me. Plenty in Australia I see regularly that are worse
Yeah, not to bad for the price and if I was local I would be playing it a ton at twilight hours. Thanks for watching :-)
Nice video. I hope you don’t mind me saying but you don’t seem to transfer your weight properly on the downswing. Your weight still remains on the right foot. Worth a lesson?
Lessons are on hold until this winter, as my last one completely wrecked my swing! :-)
@@notaperfectgolfer3489 oh dear. Yes they can do that!
This is my local course, it was really well kept up to about 10 years ago😢
It's still a great layout underneath it all...
how many degrees are your 7 iron?
34°, it's a Big Bertha 2002 version. Goes really well when I can hit the draw like on the layup shot on hole 2. Thanks for watching :-)
@@notaperfectgolfer3489 Okay thanks! You never know today, mine is an old 37 degree Lynx but you can easily find 27 degree 7 irons also which obviously goes a lot further;)
Bunker play was a good part of my game, then suddenly it just disappeared. I ended up watching a Danny Maude video on bunker play and it really has helped tbh
P.S what I like about your game if the understanding you have about it, on the 18th you know your tired and take more club to make up, so many people just keep hitting that 9 iron when they should take a 7
I rotate between here and sandfield (mentioned it to you before) for £10 for 18 holes you can’t actually moan especially if you’re a bad golfer like myself 👍🏻
Golfers are so bougie. This course is just fine. Great vid
Ps Triple bogey on hole five, we saw it 🤣🤣
The Gods of Golf are wilful and capricious.
All that they give in the single beat of a hummingbirds wing, they take away for each beat in the day of an Albatross.
I’ve seen (and play) much worse. Think burned out cars in the semi rough.
I'm flabbergasted that people pay £30+ for a round of golf tbh. Maybe it's ok once a wk for some.
I couldn't justify paying that especially if I had a bad round.
You definitely need some coin for this sport unless you land on courses like this . I can pay £6.50 for 9 holes or £10 18 hole twighlight on another course .
played James.
love you james
Not a bad little neighborhood course. All these were designed for really, just to give the locals their spot. I have been on much worse that cost much more.
Yeah, the course was much better than I expected for only a tenner! Thanks for watching :-)
technically you got a triple bogey on hole 5
Yep ,spotted that 👌
You definitely got a treble bogey on 5. Why would you not count that as a shot?
It was 2 inches away :-)
2 inches is 2 inches mate was that a 9 bro
@@notaperfectgolfer3489 2 inches can lose or win you the masters it don’t matter gotta count ‘em all 🤷♂️
Never take advice from fellow hackers. But, should you like, try bending your knees more on those bunker shots.
Hole 2, a 263 yard drive with a half swing on level ground. haha No way. Tracer error?
Hole 9, same thing. half swing 239 on level ground!?
You get what you pay for. I play here quite regular and it’s decent for the price. Dog walkers can be annoying though.
Two tap-in putts on 5.
If you want the worst course ever, play Pennington golf course in Leigh. It makes Ellesmere Port look like Augusta.
apart from horrible looking greens then i don't understand why this course has such a bad review
Only about 1/2 the greens were patchy, maybe some of the reviewers had more issues with the public on the course than me? Thanks for watching :-)
Golf can be snobbyfied . Nowt wrong with this course let mi tell thee.
first
👏
I worked there for 17 years was never that bad the course OK wasn't perfect. company's come in milk the local council for everything then the next company comes in and same again always time and time again.
I enjoyed the course overall, nice layout and great to have 4 par 5s to go at! Thanks for watching Shane :-)
@@notaperfectgolfer3489 not going to lie was upsetting to watch to see the greens looking like that never seen them that bad like that before.
