Being a Benchmade customer for over 20 years, the next generation of owners sadly seem to have adapted the 80/20 rule. They have figured out that they can make more money with less work by focusing on the 20% willing to spend to way too much and ignoring the other 80% of would be customers.

I’ve never suffered a broken Omega spring and I’ve got dozens of Ganzo & Benchmade knives. I retired in 2005 and began smoking cigars. My dentist urged me to stop and I protested that I didn’t inhale. He asked why do heart patients put nitro pills under their tongues? Answer: the meds go directly into the bloodstream - as would the toxins from cigar smoke. I’ve since got cancer but think I’ve beaten it, only time will tell. I’ll always wonder if my brief years of cigar smoking contributed to my cancer. Be well MarineX, enjoyed your video..!

I just bought my first Benchmade just a few days after this video posted. Just found this video today btw. I got the mini Bugout. I think like most great companies Benchamde has a intangible quality that just makes people want them. Yes the quality and designs play a factor but there’s something else that just makes it feel more special then say a Spyderco even. Anyway I’m very happy with my purchase and I see myself carrying this knife only for a long time. You have a very cool channel sir. Thank you.

The Axis lock is what originally made me reach for a benchmade. But there are companies like Ganzo that make them and they do it well for the price.

I ended up buying a 940 Osborne with G10 scales. My reasons were:
    1. It’s an American company who make their products in the USA.
    2. From the research I’ve done, I think that Benchmades are quality knives, and I want a tool that will hold up over time (the knife sharpening helped in that decision)
    3. It was on sale from REI.
    4. The aftermarket is great for these knives (I may replace the scales with something more bright as I have a tendency to misplace things easily, though the stock scales feel great to me).
Yes, I think that these knives are very expensive for what they are offering, and while I don’t think that money is always an indicator of quality, I am willing to pay the price for the knife that I bought because of the reasons listed above. It’s not perfect, but as of now, I’m satisfied with my purchase, and I believe that this will be an item that (as long as I don’t misplace it) I will have for a very long time.

Their pricing is absurd. S35v blade with flimsy plastic handles on a bugout going for $200 is nuts. Plus I tried getting an replacement omega spring and it took forever and cost me an additional $20.

When it comes to knife companies Benchmade & spyderco are my go to. You really cant beat the Benchmade warranty. They replaced my griptilian blade that i snapped the tip off with no questions and i got the knife back very fast, i think in a weeks time if i remember.
I currently have the aluminum bailout as my carry now that i work in an office environment. With the pomel delete the bailout is perfect for me. Its slender but full size and does not print in my pocket, especially because i wear slim jeans.
My problem with Benchmade is FRN. dont get me wrong, frn is a good material but id like to see more variety than just FRN and aluminum, like maybe see benchemade use more G10 in production. I put g10 scales on my bugout and in my opinion, brought the bugout to new levels.

My first foray into “premium” knives started with Benchmade, because I could walk into Bass Pro shop, see, and handle the knife I was interested in, and buy it on the spot. They sell Benchmade, so that’s what I went with. I have a Bugout that I still carry, a Griptilian, mini Griptilian, and mini Bugout. Mini Bugout is a tad too small for me, as the blade usually hits my palm when closing it (not hard enough to cut me, but it’s still a safety issue), and the regular Bugout steers towards not work friendly, due to size and blade shape.

I've currently got a dozen Benchmade knives and I love them, but I also bought them all years ago, before they went all in on the big price jump at the beginning of last year, some of it due to inflation. If I was just starting out buying knives now, I would probably only get a couple of them, because their current pricing puts them too close to other luxury knives, like ones made by Hinderer, Spartan-Harsey, Zero Tolerance, Olamic Cutlery, and Chris Reeves. There are a couple I wouldn't mind buying to add to the collection, but I just can't justify the price for what they are. That means buying more fixed blades and more Spyderco knives.

Their quality is excellent, that being said, you can get the same quality for a much lower price. I have a Vosteed Mini Nightshade with carbon fiber handles, and a S35VN blade that I got for $99. Customization is a big plus though. My guess is that S30V is a steel that they’re very familiar with, so it’s their go to steel. S30V, while an older steel, is still pretty decent, even by today’s standards.

Dont forget CRKT they make amazing blades with multiple options from steel to handle material and lock style. I’ve been a crkt life long user edc, most crkt kit carson m21s and the sf m16 big dog tanto, and a few other higher end ones with d2 like the pillar iv which is beautiful and could hang with a bugout but I recently switched to a benchmade bailout for my current edc. And you can feel the difference in quality such as the action and blade lock and steel obviously

  • @RockyMountainBlades
    @RockyMountainBlades 3 місяці тому

its been about a year or so for me now where I said I will no longer purchase any BM knives. specifically for me the main factor is that I have seen their prices jump way up and their quality has gone down. I have a bugout that I have been playing with today because I had to replace a spring in it and the action has been terrible since a month after I bought it (2-3 years ago). I had even put nice flytanium scales ($40) on it before it started being rough and gritty. I probably can't sell it because no one wants to pay even the base price of $180 for a knife that feels like its been left in the sand even with nice handles. My first knife of quality really ever was a mini grip and I have had 3, which have all been great and I still like it a bunch but I wouldn't get another today because a Hogue mini RSK is within $20 of difference and the new ones come in Magnacut and G-10 stock. I don't hate Benchmade I just wont buy from them again for these reasons.

You have some good takes on Benchmade knives. I think what it really boils down to is being in the incrowd. Benchmade is a designer brand which is really the only justification for its high price tag. They are good knives but spending that amount of cash on a pocket knife really is mind blowing. The only good thing about Benchmade is that they have the best customer service in the industry. Similar to Glock. However, you need not to look far and wide to find quality blades that cost half as much. The real question that people should ask themselves is "What do I need a knife for?" you could answer that question with a 40-60 dollar knife you can get at your local Walmart. Just stay away from china made knives and you'll be fine.

Great video!! I am a diehard Benchmade fan. I've been using, carrying and collecting Benchmade for years. Yes, it is frustrating to see the price increase across the board on their knives, but, take a look around and you'll see everything has drastically gone up for no apparent reason. My personal opinion, I would rather pay a bit more for something that has a proven history and track record than waste my money trying to find something comparable. Just my 2 cents

I’ve bought Benchmades for years. But haven’t bought one for a couple of years now. I think the last one I bought is a mini Adamas. Lately their designs don’t do anything for me. And now their pricing is just over the top. It’s hard to justify spending that much when there are more interesting designs with the same or better materials at a lower cost. And in the budget territory, you can get some great folders in the $50 to $70 range. I want to support an American company. But it’s getting hard with all the great knives that are coming from overseas. That being said, I’ll be eyeing the mini Adamas auto in carbon fibre and MagnaCut coming out this year. Along with the downsized Bushcrafter fixed blade coming out also. Whether or not I spend my ducats on those two remains to be seen.

I have at least 6 or 7 benchmades. I really like how they are always ambidextrous. Then I dought a Houge with the same lock as the axis lock, and it is a much better knive. Benchmade is also the only knife company that I have had to return a knife for repair that was a complete fail. S30V is old school, and Benchmade just wants way too for better steels compared to the competition.

Recently bought a new Mini Adira (water series). The retail price on it was $230.00. With my local tax rate, it would have cost $248.98. I purchased it from a local ACE Hardware for $186.94 out the door. They had it listed for just under $200.00. I used a 20% ACE coupon. There are ways to find them at a reasonable price. Sites like White Mountain Knives ship free, offer 10% discount and don't charge tax. I wouldn't pay the retail price by any means. You just have to find the right outlet...

I have had over 10 Benchmades during my 30-year career in the Army. Some have been abused and deployed with me. Never had an omega spring broken. I also had an issue with two knives that were sent to BM. One was to get my name engraved (a Grip), the other was issued to me, an auto that I took apart and couldnt put back together. Long story short, UPS lost my knives. They said they were delivered, which I know it was a lie since I was waiting for them at the house. After months of back-and-forth, Benchmade decided to send me two knives. The one from deployment it was discontinued so they sent me a Presidio auto. Both knives engraved. I pay PX prices, so the prices are not an issue to me. Their customer service is top notch.

I own a Benchmade Barrage, and EDC'd it for years as my work knife. I literally used it every single day. I cut rubber hoses, preyed out mesh screens, cut shrink wrap, scrapped paint, sludge, rust, grease, you name it, I used it daily for over 10 yrs in harsh chemical environments.... One thing people need to understand is there is nothing sacred or special, about them. It's all about branding and labor costs to make them. You can find plenty of comparable knives out there for MUCH cheaper that are made in China. Labor costs in Oregon drive up the cost of these knives, Regulatory laws, labor laws, EPA laws, all add to the cost of making these knives. Employees at Benchmade enjoy high wages and benefits that go into the cost. My benchmade is getting shipped back to oregon city for repairs because the spring is shot and the screws are stripped out from taking it apart so many times to clean the gunk out of the spring and handle, So i bought a cheap SOG, made in China. as a replacement until i get it back... The SOG is a fine knife that does everything my Benchmade did and it's a $30.00 knife.

The Glock of the knife world... Even when you hit a rare 30% off sale, theyre not competitive with the market. Once they lost their axis lock patent, and they failed to innovate and improve for 20yrs, theyre left with only the die-hard Fanboys. And even those are getting sour and alienated.

I carried a Benchmade CQC7 for over 20 years. It was in my pocket the first time I held my daughter. It was in my pocket the day she got married. I gifted it to my new son in law that same day. It served me well and continues to serve him well. I replaced it with the Kershaw version of the same Emerson CQC7 design. For my EDC use, the only difference I notice is a little more frequent need to strop it. I still only need to get the stones out once a year or so.

I'm shopping for a new EDH knife and was considering Benchmade but I can't justify some of the pricing. I don't mind ponying up for quality but their pricing seems so inflated. Their donations give me pause. I'm also independent and vote either way but living on the other side of the state and and burnt out on being forced to deal with Portland's uber progressive idiocy. I may be a hard pass if part of my money is going to end up funding more stupid crap.

I own 40+ Benchmade knives. I started collecting in the early '90s when you could get any Benchmade for under $100.00. The last one I bought was my auto Adamas. It's probably the last purchase I'll make from them. C'mon, $600.00 for a edc folder? They've lost their rabid ass minds. I don't mind paying for quality, but their prices are completely indefensible!! It's offensive and I won't be buying any more of their products any time soon until they come back to earth!!!
