The team overtakes the Duergar Queen, before Ulara is able to make a thrall of Grog. After slaying her underlings, and momentarily banishing her to another dimension, Vox Machina presses her for information about K’Varn. It is in that instant that K’varn speaks to them, through the lips of the Duergar queen.
His evil palpably radiating from the queen, K’varn urges Vox Machina to find him, in the city of Yug’voril. His message delivered, the Duergar falls still, her life departed.
To the surprise of the weary group, Keylith again voices her growing doubts about the path they all walk, but after some assuaging words from Vax’ildan, the group makes camp in order to rest their tired bones.
Later, they proceed on, finding a vast island in yet another massive underground cavern. Clarota informs them that this is where the city of Yug’voril stands. The party finds a ruined boat beneath the surface of the subterranean lake, and after Tiberius raises it and Percy patches it up, they take to the water. Pausing at a craggy beach as they make their way on to K’Varn, the party perhaps goes looking for trouble and does indeed find it.

It always annoyed me.
it really is getting quite old.... I do like "Clarence", but yeah...
In my head cannon, the reason for this is a lack of first hand experience with mind flayers that sprouts into a niave trust combined with a war bound connection (the same type of bound real soldiers feel due to them having to actually trust each other with their lives). This combined with a distrust of preset societal preconceptions, for example while both dieties are good pike and kima both worship different gods. This combined with kimas sense of resisting compromise and in honesty being there for no reason. I get that her diety gave her a vision, by why only one paladin against such a dark strong foe, why not all paladins amd clerics of bahamut. Clarota was there trying to free and asist his people, something keyleth could relate to even if the reasoning wasnt the comeplete same. Then combine that with vox machias past of being basicly outcasts even as adventurers, its logicaly they wouldnt trust those of what could be perceived as higher standings.
It's been my experience that "monsters", for the most part, are usually straightforward with their intentions, either because us knowing doesn't change anything for them, or because lying can get them killed. Most of them don't lie to each other for a living, so doing it consistently usually bites them in the ass. Plus, most monsters are driven by instinct, and if you "know" those instincts, you can usually cohabitate or even tame them depending on their disposition.
However "non-monsters" usually have some sort of agenda, they are more used to lying to those around them, and are not as instinct driven, so its harder to figure them out.
I've been stabbed in the back plenty of times by non-monsters. However, other than the two times that I was WAY underprepared for them, monsters have been pleasant and helpful for the most part.

Yeah, the Gravity Falls dynamic was fantastic, and they simply ooze that same sort of sibling reltationship. It's easy to slip into the illusion that both players are siblings, at times, too.

@@S_047 not much to say really. We went in acting too big for our boots and the DM sent a rogue mindflayer and some Duergar after us. We were level 4 or so so it didnt go too well.

every time matt says "it apears to be" or some such vaguity I expect it to be falllowed with "you step into the room, it is a mouth, you are consumed" or "looks like water, it's acid" I had too many horrible dm when in elementary school.
I was second DM for a beginner D&D weekly event at a local game shop. Last session before the shop closed, I made a giant map that had a large bridge over a river and connecting two lands. I had to spend five minutes arguing with my players that it was a strong and secure bridge that would not be blown up. They still didn't cross it. Main DM is laughing because we've obviously taught them well.
That's horrible. DMs intentionally gaslighting and abusing players is fucked to me. The DM isn't there to play the game against you or to lure you into some sort of "Gotcha!", the DM is there to facilitate telling a story and managing the world. If the world is dangerous and the players are careless, they die, but the DM shouldn't be inventing things specifically to murder players out of some sense of maniacism.
tamriilin Depends on how they do it and intent. I've tricked players on several occasions because I'm trying to teach them to think. Most of the time, I'm providing hints throughout. I've then explained exactly what was going on afterwards so they can see the full narrative and an idea of the lesson.
You've got to find a good balance. You don't want your players getting cocky and it's great to see a trap fall into place, but equally you don't want players rolling perception on every corner out of fear.
Traps are important, you need them around but you need to use them in moderation. If your party is getting a bit excessively cautious, to the point of refusing to proceed, you'll likely need to lighten up on them a bit. If the opposite is the case, and they are getting a bit overly cocky, crack down on them, throw a series of dangerous traps in to bring back that sense of danger, or introduce a set of particularly trying encounters.

2:33:30 (wow, I'm talkative today) Did I ever mention I fucking loved the bottle gag? Both the initial "I have this [empty bottle]; I'm good" whenever anyone mentioned packing an air supply, and then the reveal that Tiberius actually wasn't being dumb and the bottle is a magic item.
I highly suspected this was a "bottle of air" (magic item) the first time he pulled it out I'm happy to see that it actually is.

One of my favorite phrases of Matt's is his "best you can tell..." because it makes it so that there isn't really a definitive answer as to whether there is danger or not.
I know this is late but I thought I'd add it for fun. My DM always says "As far as you can tell, you are hidden." to every stealth roll. From a Nat 20 to Nat 1. I love and hate it. It adds a fun bit of tension.
The first whisper in the show, and Sam is already using the moment to advertise something. I love it!

For a pretty independant character, Vax'Ildan makes for a good leader of the party. Or atleast, it feels like he takes up leadership more often than not.
Yeah. He's a reasonably good diplomat.
But he's terrible at making plans. He usually just stealths ahead and throws his daggers at lone guards.
+Jimmy Evans ah well, they're all terrible at something or the other. Just found myself very surprised when I noticed it. Then again, I did create a rogue who also exhibits leadership qualities and a flair for diplomacy. Suppose it is possible :)

The game started as a birthday adventure for Liam, it's not surprising that his character is an impromptu leader in the group.
if you realy want a leader type rogue you can also easely take dex as main and cha as second stat as rogues with all their proficencies and experties dont need that good other stats, and you can dump str and con to 10 so you can get also mediocer int and wis..

yeah i had to laugh at how quickly he changed the subject every time there was a dick joke in this episode after i got caught up on the mighty nien arc (this is as far as i have gotten in the VM campaign so i dont know if it will change later on or not)
Is no one going to talk about the moment where Keyleth says "I just hope we're not the darkness." and Tiberius just says "Oh, do you need light?" and then uses his light spell. I laughed so hard at that!
Keyleth is reaching some self importance but sounds incredibly stupid.

If Lady Kima follows a God of good alignment, then she is good, and anything her God tells her to do is good. It's that simple, so this whole 'How do you know what you're doing is right?' angle doesn't make any sense, she KNOWS what she's doing is right because an OMNIPOTENT GOD FUCKING SAID SO.
@@NarutoUzumaki-jg4pw that really depends on how much importance you give to the alignment system. I personally find the black and white interpretation quite boring. In my view "this god is lawful good" is an observation by humans/dwarfs/elfs/... and no inherent property of that god. I like to think that orcs view Grumsh as good.
And just because you follow a good god does not justify every deed. Even devout followers can go to far (see Pike for an example)

I love how each of the players seem to be playing the perfect kind of character for their body type/personality. Like I can see Marisha as an elven druid, Orion as a dragonborn, Sam as a gnome - and Travis is just the perfect goliath.
Only thing is Travis is actually really smart

I liked the part where they talk and comfort Keyleth. They don't do a lot of roleplaying unless it's for laughs (which I certainly don't mind, it's hilarious) so is it's to see a serious moment like this.

not spoiling anything seriously since this is my first time watching this campaign, but mind flayers lose their individuality when they are in the mental range of an elder brain. my guess is as soon as they enter mind-flayer city, he suddenly loses all individuality and starts treating them as strangers. idk if the elder brain might be interested in them but if not, non-thralls in a mind flayer city would most likely not be tolerated... unless matt changes the way flayers work in his campaign, but idk. depends on how faithful he stays or strays from the source material.
