I just watched Ep1 of Calamity and as it had been awhile (it'sbeenawhiiiile) since I watched C1, I'm grateful this video exists! I only really remembered the ridicule of the name, sadly, as it had continued to be referenced in that context for the most part
Following Brennan here from Dimension 20, EXU Calamity was the first piece of CR i ever watched. Going through campaign 1 now this makes alot more sense.
I SCREAMED when I heard this. I just started watching CR a few months ago, so Purvan is fresh in my mind. CRAAAAAAAAZY
Yet again you knock out of the park these comp videos. You're so good at these.
I love that Brennan made him super emo, super serious...
sounds like Vax lol!
@@redguy2215 Exactly. Apparently she has a type. 😜
@@annec8127 it goes with her aesthetic after all lol!!!
@@annec8127 I mean, it tracks for the goddess of death. 😂
Dudes finger ends up being stolen by Bob & lost in Pandemonian 😂😂
I had just watched the episodes where vox machina find his tomb when I started watching exu calamity! Moments before they announced his name I was like “wait a minute, that said a guest with a wolf… OMG, it’s purvan suul!!” And the he said the name and I lost it along with Sam and Travis😂
Wait. Galdric didn't like the Hodmedods? Huh. Could it be he detected fiendish ones?
Probably because they started to encroach and touch his master uninvited
This is an amazing thought!
@@VoidariumComic i mean it would make some sense. Specially after Brennan revealed that they wanted to kill Suul.
@@VeteranVandal I love the long game. As a fellow DM, making seemingly innocuous interactions important retrospectively is one of the coolest ways of representing causality to players.
@@VoidariumComic but the one you dont have the plan for is the one detail players will latch onto. Which is why we just add a connection/callback to whatever they took notice of and pretend it was planned from the start!
Love how much of the mocking they took for TLOVM2
This is the power of storytelling. Different times, different narrators, different stories, yet the memories and familiarity, cannot but make us all welcome all of these make-believe characters as friends.
Convinced Brennan brought him back in Downfall because now he’s Old Purv
They cut out the part at the end where Pike starts howling with Galdric ...
Liev'tel also used one of Purvan's finger in the search for grog,,, and lost it
I'll never get over Travis's reaction to the name. Just look at that face! 😂
1:44 Laura destroys Matts world. As usual.
@speckovids do you know who are the "3 sorcerous children" that were mentioned by Brennan fleeing the city on an airship in the calamity finale? Sam and Travis both reacted when he was describing them.
they were the ones Nydus met in the beginning when they visited the Golden Scythe on a school trip
The young triton girl might also be the same one Cerrit's daughter was talking to at the party that Kir reported back to him through the sending stone (end of episode 3)
Calamity was the first long CR thing that I watched (I just don't have the attention span for the full campaigns but I've watched a lot of clips and one-shots) and while the cast was having a huge reaction I was just frantically googling to figure out what the big deal was
I also have a short attention span! I accomodate for it by either watching the YT videos at a faster speed, or I do something else like paint or crochet while it plays. I recommend starting in C2 or C3 if you ever do decide to get into it. The early audio issues in C1 turned me off the show until I found out there were episode synopsis online. You essentially have to start in the middle of C1 if you get distracted by audio issues easily.
Hmmm, I forgot they never released Valdrick from service. Poor Buddy.

i like how matt is so in the moment when everyone starts laughing he's just like "wait, what?" and it takes him a minute to be like "oh ok fine you assholes"
ugh every time the end of campaign one has a video show after vax has moved on i always cry no matter what. vax is by far my favorite of the cast and campaigns.
Purvan Suul = Artorias
Galdric = Sif
Age of Arcanum = Oolacile
Calamity = Abyss
Dark Souls?
@@shaungriffith9506 That's quite dramatic. No Mountain sized evil deity breaking a sky city in half or turning a continent into islands. No 2/3 of the population dead.
I hate how well this fits
Naw because purvan actually earned his title, he didn't have to lie about it like artorias' story
@@shaungriffith9506 The calamity is a death sentence, present day Earth is just going through cruel and unusual punishment
Thank you, I knew something was up when they reacted to the name but I couldn't place it!
thanks for upload
Luis's eyes as Travis loses it are hilarious.
I love how excited they get. makes me feel verified in my reaction as well and almost part of the group. man i want to play dnd, its been too long
of course Travis recognizes the wolf first lol
"It is a name that strikes fear in the hearts of my enemies"
Man galdric is so cool i hope we see him again
He's currently my patreon for hexblade/ rogue/paladin who uses the accursed spectre feature to summon ghostly werewolves
Well, I'm pretty sure he still lives in the woods of Whitestone so it's entirely possible. We can always dream.
Matt: “Champions of the Raven Queen become nameless, and are just spoken of in public as The Champion.”
Everyone else: “Nice try, Matt.”
I love how in this video we go from the present (2022) to the past (2016) but in the reality of canon of exandria we are actual going to the past (the calamity) to a future time (Campaign 1) which is still technically a past because the present time of Exandria is campaign 3. Thanks for coming to my Trinket Talk, get it Ted talk but trinket talk because Ted is like teddy bear and trinket is a bear with a “T” name
We appreciate you
@@Bruda-zu8dz Aww, thank you that means a lot to me.
P.S
I am only seeing thing now because notifications are stupid.
Thanks for making this. The side by side is a really good example of tying campiagns together without beinging back PCs
Thank you for this one. Did not connect the dots with the wolfs name.
Thank you for this video! I only started watching critical role now, because of Brendan Lee Mulligan. I wanted to know more about Pervan Suul, it seemed like I missed something.
Then you should learn his name is Brennan not brenDan
@@kjcorder Oh man! Embarrassing! Thanks for pointing that out.
So wait, that wolf was like a thousand years old?
At least 800 years
Yes, but it was magically trapped in stasis, so time it didn't age or really experience the passage of time.
Can someone explain what was going on in campaign one when they were talking to the wolf, they were acting like they got freaky fridayed, totally different personalities loo
I love that this made it into the show!
Matt: "... is named Purvon..."
Laura (immediately): "{LOL} Yeah he is!"
😁😂😂😂😂😂🖒
Laura Bailey, CR's resident gutter minded twelve year old boy 😂
I don't know what is going on, but i love their enthusiasm.
iirc his name is Purvan Suul, I think you have a typo on the description
thanks for the vid btw
No it's Perv On
so unexpected... hahaha i had the same reaction as Travis
There should be a one-shot where Vox Machina is summoned to the Creator of All Things', aka Matthew Mercer, lair and he's just super pissy about them making fun of the names of his fated creations and machinations then challenges them to a fight. At the end, win or lose, they all get transported back to Exandria where they wake up and realize it was a collective dream spell by some weirdo wizard named Mathias Mercutio.
... or maybe not since after reading this it sounds dumb as shit. I take it back.
but, I liked it 😢
Some of us liked it
Like the Marvel's One Above All.
The idea is certainly amusing, but I don’t think it would convert well into an actual story/game. Still, the idea gave me a chuckle, so thanks for sharing!
Make it an April 1st One-Shot
Somewhere Matt let out an audible sigh and has no idea why
Ima bout to get my perv on yall!
Lou and Luis is like Who ???
Can someone explain Travis' reaction to no armor? Where he says "oh, of course". Is that just because Purvan is wearing the mantle and doesn't need it?
The vestiges of divergence hadn't been created yet, since the calamity hasn't started by this point. Also he's at a party with no need for armor
@@magnetronman298 Ohhh okay yeah that makes sense, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks!
ahhhhhh yes. i forgot how dumb Keyleth was lol people hated on Marisha for it, but it was the character. i love Laudna in campaign 3 a lot.
Definitely "the character". Beau or Loudna definitely NEVER had any of those moments 😂
@@padenbang7375 I mean, she is the creative director for the highest grossing twitch channel in history. What have you done? :p I do believe theres space in the game for players to be dumb sometimes... Honestly makes the show more relatable because it's not scripted or perfect all the time. I think it's part of CR's charm. Still a home game at heart. A really well funded one, but it's still friends around a table playing a game. Anyway, no hate to you. Have a good one :)
You know what. I didn't even catch it. That vax was fighting him in the animation. I didn't make the connection for some reason.
Gracklstugh, not Menzeberranzan. Grack has a rift running down the middle with multiple bridges crossing and it is the home (Prison?) of Themberchaud. Menzoberranzan, doesn't have a rift and has the massive pillar (flloor to ceiling, stalagmite meeting stalactite) that they heat to keep time.
"You guys are cruising to a TPK today" lol
Is Purvan the Drizzt of Alexandria EXU?
that's actually a pretty decent comparison
Aren’t the portfolios of Mielliki and The Lady of Ravens pretty different?
Like one is like a forest god and the other the god of death
@@AdaDenali I think they mean more in terms of fame, not so much a 1:1 comparison
I watched Calamity first before any Campaigns and had no idea lol
I know that 3:00 musta messed some people up.
Wait wait wait …
Is Vax not the original champion of the raven queen in campaign 1???
Purvan was the champion like 1,000 years ago. He continued to serve that purpose until Vax took over. It was his corpse that had the Vestige.
@@seansilence2697 it kinda sounds sometimes like he's saying that Scanlan had the vestige/was the new champion
wearing the armor doesn’t make you the champion, what turned him into the champion was the deal he made with the Raven Queen
I loves the grog - galdric interactions in vox machina. can't wait to start watching this mini campaign. so ready for the feels! ❤
Major Dragonlance vibes
Its like hearing about Huma and Magius in the original Chronicles to then seeing their story in a later follow up book
Or about this Fistandantilus person only to meet them personally in Soul Forge and Legends
Start our classical style story several centuries after Ages of Dreams, Might and bring it up to the tail end of Despair.
I wonder what happened to galdrick after campaign 1?
God Dam it after EXU this is so sad.
love that they bought back this joke for Legend of Vox Machina so it wasn't just the players who had the same reaction but the characters as well lol
Can someone tell me the episodes of these references, please?
Hi I've updated that info in the description
This was all edited backwards. You need the buildup BEFORE the reveal!
wish i was creative as these people. though, i think i can be. i suppose my real wish is that i wasnt as insecure or at least was braver than i am. such as they are. I get too insecure of what others think of me and how they may react to me.... tmi probably but im inebriated and got to get it out somewhere, and who can afford therapy
So crazy that now we have this exact reveal in animated form as well. This group has come SO far 😭
why the different guy and half the cast missing?
Deep lore. I missed it first time around.
Boy I know how this feels now. I’m DMing a game right now for my friends and it takes place in Exandria and I can’t say Kryn because it sounds too much like cringe.
He shows up and Matt isn't there.
Perhaps the best payoff ever.
Perv-on suul
What did I miss? What was the big reveal in the making? It seems more like a small cameo than anything else
English is not my first languaje. Why was that name funny the first time?
purvan is similar to "pervert" which means a sexual predator
Purvun sounds like
"Perv" which is short for Pervert
And "on"
the phrase Perv on, as in "He openly continued to perv on...." means to leer at. To look at or behave towards someone in a way that shows sexual interest, and that they or others find unpleasant. it was unfortunate that Matt chose a name and the players heard a smutty humorous version. But certain players are very well know for this
Ah, the good ol' days where the worst thing he would threaten was a TPK and not targeted character trauma
maybe move the cursor out of the screen ? lol
