Vox Machina struggles to survive after their battle with the Duergar King and Queen, our heroes broken and battered. Tiberius and Lady Kima turned to stone, and Vax’ildan and Scanlon badly wounded, the party flees the Duergar keep, not knowing where the Sorceress Queen Ulara has stolen off to with their Goliath companion. Realizing how far they’ve pushed themselves, they seek respite in the shadows and thankfully cure their stony friends with the blessings of the goddess, Sarenrae (tenuous though they may be). Relying on Vex’ahlia’s knowledge of the underdark and her knack for tracking her prey, the weary travelers press on into the deep. They come across yet another abomination in the dark, and battle the queer creature in a sea of bone and glass, Percy felling it with a thunderous crash from Bad News. Finally leaving the wretch behind them, they spy a fire twinkling in the distance...

Here's a little story for you. After watching Critical Role a few times I picked up the 5e phb, my first rpg in around 30 years, and dm'd a homebrew adventure for my 4 kids and wife, using Mercer's style. We only stopped after 5 hours. 5 hours of quality family time, during which I took them all from a shipwreck equipped only with rags to the brink of death multiple times in intense encounters. My 6 yr old paladin eventually found his courage, wearing ringmail and armed with a javelin, leaping forward at a direwolf to protect his family. My 12 yr old wizard found a spellbook covered in fur suspiciously like our pet dog, that clung to his head with 10 tiny pink arm/legs. A giant eagle almost killed the entire party using hit and fly tactics before they had found missile weapons, but my 8 yr old cast entangle to hold it down. My wife couldn't believe how amazing it was. Thank you Critical Role!
But giant eagles are good creatures
That was so good I'm crying by the way it doesn't matter if I'm a Giant Eagle is a friendly creature or not it can be turned into a hostile
@@TreVotheJoke ok but it would have more story to why it attacked

It's hilarious how Laura goes from aggressively caring for her fictional pet bear to constantly forgetting about her fictional pet traumatized weasel
Let’s be real, she still forgot about Trinket until late C1 with the Pokéball
I mean bear vs weasel... bear easily outweighs weasel
Campaign 2 episode 106 (Ukatoah) is my favorite "forgot about her weasel" moment 🤣🤣🤣
Let's be fair, Sprinkle has survived things that Trinket would never have, just because everyone forgets about him. Pretty sure it's an unnatural being at this point, just to make it make sense.
when sprinkle gets an initiative and attacks, you see if she forgets
Classic D&D campaign.
A holy warrior of good who you were sent to rescue: "I don't like her."
A tentacled abomination of the underdark that you found in a cave: "WOOHOO! Yeah! Go Clarota!
Tyler Kemery But Clarota is kinda cute
I mean he is pretty funny for a horrid Eldritch monster whom literally sucks brains
Partner with Tentacles, if this is in Japan we ALL know where this is going.
to be fair: Holy Warrior's first action after she was rescued by the party: Grabs Pike's mace and splatters an already defeated guard with it
tentacled abomination's first action: Negotiating a temporary allianc with the party while making clear it is just that and nothing more.
... Which one would you trust more?
@@achimsinn7782 well i'd pardon the one who was tortured, sure Clarota didn't eat a lot and was an outcast but torture is trying to hurt someone the most and the longest
"Disadvantage because you're wearing heavy armor" will be carved on Pikes tombstone.
Matt's obvious pleasure in Vex figuring out she still has hunter's mark and can track the queen is the best thing ever
@@rishavchakravarty3577 Look we late to the party my guy, Lets just let it happen
Was just going to say the same thing yassss!
I just noticed the same thing and came to look and see if I was the only one that saw it lol
@@rishavchakravarty3577 my thoughts too, to point I went back and re-watched the end of Episode 7 to see. She did her attack then remembered she hadn't moved it to her, and never said she was going to even as her bonus action at the end. Then the queen teleported away, so I don't think the Queen had it on her. Though for purpose of story it worked nice, and it kind of, she forgot to use it before the attack, so maybe idea was that they all thought that she had then put it on after the attack, so let it slide?
@@rishavchakravarty3577 Oh, I am sure however they did it, he would have told them where she is, by either Hunters Mark or Keyleth using beast things, or Vex being in the underdark, whatever it is, they would have gotten there. I was just curious if she actually had done it. It is a nice touch really. I mean, fairly sure in the escape/damage/sleeping she should count as having lost concentration on the spell, but it makes it more fun for the game to let some things slide. "The Rule of Cool". Game I play in, DM often is willing to allow things for fun, our dual wielding fighter threw two hand axes at once, his argument being if he can fight with two swords equally, why can't he throw two axes. DM found idea fun so went with it. Plus, more fun to just run with these things anyway than totally stick to all rules all the time.

I like to imagine that Clarence dies a little bit inside every time they make a bad pun
*praise the sun* - It's even worse when he can sense the sincerity in their minds. He knows that they honestly think it's funny, and he does not agree.
What do you mean by a 'bad' pun? All puns are the best of the best of jokes. Clarence is a hater, and you know what we do with haters - We dab on them.
He made it clear at the start he *HATES* puns.
It's even worse: he can read their minds. Every even worse pun that they thought of buy decided was too stupid even for VM would be projected to him.
So that's why he kept missing
I like how you can just tell what NPC Matt is acting as before he says anything with the ways he contorts his face and body language. Truly a glorious actor and DM.
He should become a voice actor
@@mr.e7541Yeah, he would be a really good voice actor.

@@AtlasNL It’s probably true. You can disagree about the value judgment without gaslighting the poor bloke.
I love the reaction whenever Matt says "how do you wanna do this?"
It's like some kind of Pavlovian Conditioning.
I mean its basically the DM saying "think of the coolest way you can kill this guy using what you attacked with"
My zemnian (german) Dm says this too and no one besides him and me saw cr so far, but we all party when he says it... (This is also how I got into Cr)
In episode 1 Liam looks at the camera and says "We live to hear Matt say 'how do you want to do this.'"
To be fair, Dms have been doing this (to some extent or another) since 97 when I started playing. That being said, it is an ABSOLUTE hype moment for any party that is invested in a fight.
As the show progresses and into s2 and probably s3 watch for the horns in battle music. Now that is Pavlovian reflex

Wouldn't call her an imbecile. But that was a really awkward and pretty soapbox-y
Just watch Laura's face throughout Keyleth's soapbox rants. Absolutely hilarious and takes away a lot of the awkward tension.
Cringey Keyleth at it again. 😬
She has some moments like this in Campaign 2 as well. I think it's a Marisha thing, not a Keyleth thing.

Man, when Travis is gone the group takes forever deciding what to do. They spent 20 minutes decided on whether to rest XD. It's nice when Grog just runs down a path rather than let the group deliberate about it.
Because he starts getting impatient since Grog can't usually contribute to the decision making. In the second campaign, though, Travis' character may as well be the de facto leader of the group.
I've always been of the opinion most, if not all (so long as the players are fine with it), campaigns benefit from an idiot character who can force the party's hand if they're indecisive.

I'm realizing Ashley's immediate response to a poor role is to stuff her mouth full of food. I feel you, girl.
I loved Matt's face when they were debating the size of the mending wheel, that motherly kind of look when he makes a face at Tiberius.
That pause and then, "....Tiberius."
Matt was smiling, but I believe he was thinking "Orion, are you fucking serious right now?" He's just too nice to actually say that.
Matt was definitely withholding annoyance, lol. What Tiberius was doing-- logistics aside-- was stealing a rp moment from Ashley. I've played with people like this... don't know when to let others have the spotlight.
@@ccRask They're the worst, we just kicked one of those out of the group, our DM had bought in a character from one player's past and he actually said 'I hate this character and I don't care about her backstory, so I'm going to everlund'. True, but it feels a bit hypocritical - for someone who gets on other peoples case for killing so much, Keyleth consistently makes basically no effort to avoid accidentally killing people, and does it a lot.
I just started watching in Campaign 2, and I'm going through Campaign 1 now, and man... it just really feels like Marisha goes out of her way to pick fights no matter what character she's playing. She usually starts the same way each time, with an antagonistic question. I really can't figure her out in this show, in either campaign. Man, I hope it's all just for the characters and that Matt doesn't get earfuls of that at home.
She is young. Think of like this: she has this high image of herself, a benevolent image because her tribe demands it, as a druid, but her actions contradict herself not because she wants to, but because things turn out that way. She pushed someone into lava as she was in the middle of a fight, killed a child and a dwarf by mistakes. I like D&D cause you might want to be something, but your actions change what other people view your character.
But the hilarious thing about Keyleth is she tries so hard to be good, but the universe seems to want her to be in the other side.
It's. A. Game.

Orion interrupting Ashley to try and use telekinesis to lift the platform trinket was on, then failing and getting obviously heated, only for Ashley to go next and finish what she was saying and it work immensely better than what he was trying to do is what I needed. But super bummed that he also took away from her leading them out with said move by…. placing a water sphere in front of where she was already guiding them with no issue…oof. It seems he’s gone for good reason.
he truly just wants to be the hero of every situation (god, i just got to that part, his reaction to it not working is fucking insufferable)
34:45 to see the moment that Matt became so proud that Laura finally used Hunter's Mark correctly
"Omg what if they start fuckin?" I lost it
Molly Waters Same. I'm at work and probably looked like an idiot laughing to myself
RIGHT? So funny! Scanlan is the best.
thats scanlan for you. i swear id go gay for scanlan
Even better if you use it for vex and Percy
"Grief speaks before sense" - such wisdom
Just wait. The Eldritch Deity gets the chance to _really_ shine with his wisdom as the zen cow-dad.
Liam and Laura's sibling energy is giving me life.
I love how when Trinket takes that nap mid battle, Sam had the shittiest grin for like 10 seconds while Laura and Ashley are genuinely concerned.
Then "This is a, Grizzly, situation".
... And no response from everyone else.
Dude, it was perfect.
Marisha: Nothing tentacle-y is good
Liam: This is not a JRPG
Good thing too, just imagine a D&D Malboro...no one is safe
Well of course Travis had to see The Avengers. He voices Thor in a lot of the animated series
Just voicing something doesn't mean they're fans of what they did work on. They haven't played all the games they've voiced in or watched all the anime they've been in. It's a job. Super heroes just happen to be awesome and Travis likes them. Even if he wasn't Thor or Hulk I'm sure he'd go see the movie.
Not to mention his character is actually awol, so he would be bored out of his mind waiting to play again
You don't think they knew he would be gone so Matt devised a way to remove him for the time being and at the same time progress the story?
The dude is actually Thor he hides it really fuckin well
I love how Matt breaks when the party assumes that Clorato and Kima might get up to some naughty business while keeping watch.
Trinket: *is dying*.
Scanlan: "We're in a bit of a GRIZZLY situation."
none of them appreciated that one

It's especially good since Grog is Pike's best friend and Scanlan is trying to get into Pike's pants.

Pike and Scanlan's interactions are the best. I love that kind of pure soul x blatant perv dynamic. so entertaining!

Yeah.... pure..... (remembers when pike slits someones throat)
Matt, not even 30 seconds into the video: "We still sadly don't have Travis..."
Me, who just dealt with the whole last episode without Travis saying he would like to rage: ":0 :("
1:22:05 THE WAY MATT LOOKS AT MARISHA AND WINKS OMG MY HEART 😭😭
I also noticed it ❤!
As a married old guy myself, that was heartwarming haha
I came here after starting with C3 and watched till ep 30. The chemistry with all the group was already in place and couples were married. So, coming here to the very beginning of all this and seeing that wink was soooo beautiful 😊😊

Underrated comment 😂
"This bear bursts out from your chest"
Sounds like the best Alien parody ever.
I almost spit my drink reading this 😅
I like how they have such distrust in the paladin that has a reputation of being honorable and overall a good person who has the faith and backing of their friend Allura while they have a literal monster who they know is insane and they know strait up eats people brains in their camp that they don’t question or sequester about their reliability to the group.
Eehhh that same "goodly paladin of Bahamut" pinned a disarmed, defenceless duergar to a wall with a sword through the gut, used the pain of it (effectively torture) to force info out of him then twisted the blade to kill him in the most painful way possible. I wouldn't trust her either. At least Clarota is up front with his evil.
@@iank472 I hope you do understand that they found her naked, with hooks in her skin, and had been tortured for days, if not a week or more by the Duregar? Are you shaming her for that? Really?
@@slipstream5762 nope I'm not shaming her at all. I'm pointing out that a paladin of Bahamut who violently and painfully murders someone, regardless of circumstances, risks severing their connection to their Patron. Bahamut traditionally isn't the most flexible of Gods when it comes to morality. It's perfectly understandable why she did it but she is still a paladin of a Lawful Good God.
Well Clarota, despite his creepy nature, has been at least mostly cooperative and even friendly with the party. Keema on the other hand, despite the party saving her, pretty much immediately started making demands of the party while ignoring their requests of her, and was all around not too fun to actually hang out with. It's understandable why they'd like Clarota more.
1:58:21
Sam: I'm going to blind him with blindness
Taliesin: Try blinding him with science, that usually works

no mercy percy starts here
"No mercy Percy". I like that!
RuzzyShuya I am watching the series for the first time. Is No Mercy Percy a thing? I hope so.
No Mercy Percy is VERY much a thing When he pulls out the Bad News, you know someones gonna die.
Just got it. *HELL YEA*
"In Draconia, those are snacks!" LMAO.
I love how all the girls are immediately lost to Kitten!Trinket. :D
''You can certainly try'' is such a typical DM answer lmao
The funniest moment is when you realize that DnD now officially (5 years later) still has cats listed as having 5HP
1:30:26 That is such a cool image. This platform of stone with a adventuring party on it. Floating above a desert of white bone, black obsidian and ancient, purple stone ruins. A single ball of light illuminating the surroundings of the party. And outside of their vision, there could be anything. It's utter darkness. Almost complete silence, in this vast, underground graveyard.
The moment Matt finished with the description I paused the video and googled because I was curious someone drew that
No results real bummer
Shame, it's really cool. Too bad i suck at drawing otherwise i'd do it.
Every time I watch these I wonder just how big Matt’s vocabulary is
I bet he's been devouring anything with a hint of ''fantasy'' on the cover for years now.
It's all toothy maws and ichor.
I gotta say that Dungeons and Dragons increased my vocabulary. I was young and started out with the basic and expert boxed sets. There were a lot of words that I'd never heard before, and still don't hear outside of the game. I kept a large dictionary with my D&D stuff, regularly needing to look up some of the words.
As a zemnian(german) this is perfect to learn new words. Dnd in general taught me so many vocabs (eg. Dexterity, Constitution, prone, restrained...) I always try to improve my school english with watching/reading in english and Cr is so much fun too
I sometimes wonder if it had to do with having a stammer as a kid (as he’s mentioned in the past). I’ve heard stories about people with a stammer increasing their vocabulary as a way to pick a new word if they’re stuck on a word.
33:41 LOL! Just the image of a mindflayer doing the ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ pose made me crack up for a solid minute! XDDD
The tiny wink/smile from Matt to Marisha at 1:22:04 gives me life
I just saw him do this and ran to the comments to see if anyone else noticed because same 😍
I rewinded to see if I saw it right, and then melted
Well spotted. I didn't see it originally. A wonderful moment to go back and see.
What does Clarota want to do?
DANCE
save his people from an outside entity that has taken control of them and outcasted him
Then take control of the elder brain and make his people DANCE.
Very good.
@@KnotsOfWonders Only if it was a Disney-themed DnD campaign.

She being another dm that rly wants to dm like Matt
i dont even Play D&D i want to sit with him so he can tell me the lore of the planet he build. There must be so much lore prepred that we will never find out because the Player dont ask or roll bad on History/Religion checks.

@@Fidgottio where can I get that setting? I mean, is there a source book other than Explorer's Guide to Wildemont?
Besides for her strange hostility towards the gnome woman they saved, Keyleth was the MVP of this episode. Insisting that they don’t touch the creepy bone valley, immediately making the dance floor for them to stand on during the fight, and using her vines to save the gnome lady...she did an awesome job.
Keyleth: I’m gonna wrap a vine around Kima’s waist not her neck
Matt: good distinction
Keyleth: I’m trying not to hurt her
Matt: yeah I know
Keyleth ain’t taking any chances this time 😂
That kitten has almost as much health as your average first-level wizard.
And does about the same damage too
If the wizards constitution is low enough, the kitten could actually have MORE health

I laughed so intensely when Vex says "You don't have any FEET left!" XD could not have been a better time for a pun
It occurs to me that they aren't collecting scalps for extra gold
true, but like Matt said in an earlier episode "The bag of holding is not a refrigerator"
So? They easily could have made scalp jerky and taken that back with them
@@alexv3357 brilliant.
Matt: ... *visible confusion* .... okay. Roll for... uh.. survival?
They wouldn’t do well in Baldur’s Gate 1 I guess
They also never brought back the promised ale to the guards right?
I don't know why Pike's "That's okay, we all start somewhere" cracks me up so much. She's such a sweetheart.
"Your bear chest!" Wow, what an underrated pun. I feel like I'm constantly backing up to laugh at Tal, and no one in the party notices the gold he's spouting. XD
Vastly disapointed that when healing Vax's foot, Scanlon didn't think to ask what other body extremity he could sing to, to grow bigger. Opportunity missed. :/
