Fairport Convention - Now Be Thankful

- When the stone is grown too cold to kneel
In crystal waters I'll be bound
Cold as stone, weary to the sounds upon the wheel
Now be thankful for good things below
Now be thankful to your maker
For the rose, the red rose blooms for all to know
When the fire is grown too fierce to breathe
In burning irons I'll be bound
Fierce as fire weary to the sounds upon the wheel
Now be thankful for good things below
Now be thankful to your maker
For the rose, the red rose blooms for all to know
When the stone is grown too cold to kneel
In crystal waters I'll be bound
Cold as stone, weary to the sounds upon the wheel
Now be thankful for good things below
Now be thankful to your maker
For the rose, the red rose blooms for all to know
Oh to be 19 again, lying in the sun on a green field, listening to Fairport Convention. The closest thing to heaven I ever found.
Sounds good to me!
Me too! It's making me cry for lost years
@@nataliawieczorek7549 the rich lived years Natalia.
What an amazing scenario 😁
I am with you. I was 19 in 1970 and dream of this.
Swarb's voice is brilliant.
Straightforward and wonderful. I wish he had sung more in the group. The fiddle took over, I guess.
@@georgefelton2975 Great fiddler, great tenor.
I agree. A recent rediscovery for me. They’re all awesome
I am thankful that music like this exists and that good quality video and sound have been preserved. Thank you! This is a treasure.
Great song and the singing is magnificent... Congratulations !
Masterpiece. and Richard Thompson is a genius
My favorite song and band of all time. I want this for my funeral.
Good idea . Stay well!
It was sung at my second wedding...
Great choice! Love this band
I love Richard Thompson's little smile at the end. What an amazing group of musicians.
Yes. Satisfied properly at the song he composed and played well
Quite a shy smile. I suspect he expressed himself most confidently through his stirling performances..
One of the most beautiful songs ever written! 😊
Not silly at all. RT does look like a virtuoso guitarslinging elf who just popped out from behind a toadstool, & Swarbrick's voice is beautifully evocative of English folk music of any age. They were an insanely talented band, & I fear we will not see their like again.
Holy moly, Andy, this is a great song, and so well sung; Swarbrick has such an unusual voice, too. Thompson's youth is astounding. Great hair!
I had one of the most peaceful moments of my life listening to this song. It still makes me tear up every single time.
Thanks for the upload. My favourite fairport song and beautifully sung by Swarbs here
Just saw Richard Thompson play in Princeton, NJ tonight. Still amazing after all of these years.
Wow how did miss that. Dooh.
saw the ginger walking around my town last year just like any regular homey, in California Redwoods. He gets around the old man!
These guys had a definite influence on me and my friends during the early 70's in Philadelphia. Their innovation, and for me hearing Dave Swarbrick's violin playing, Richard Thompson, Dave Pegg, and Simon Nichol, Richard Lambert, Sandy Denny and others, it has led me to believe that if there is an abiding principle of Unity, it is in Music.
What a beautiful song, I am very thankful to the makers...... 😊
Oh my Fairport, my Fairport... what memories this brought back - and you are all just as wonderful (or more so) as you were back then. Thank you.
very basic, very simple, even a live recording out in the open way back when.....that takes some doing to end up with such a perfect song, and let's not forget the main singer is also playing a key instrument as well.
Swarbrick you were something very special RIP.
Yes he was, but I think he'd be puzzled you credit him with playing when his arms are by his sides!
This was the best FC line up in my opinion.
[29 March 2022] I can't get over this video. It's such a great, assured, confident performance of a beautiful (cold yet compelling) song, by a band in the first flush of its glory (if that makes any sense). I must confess, I also can't get over seeing footage of Richard Thompson when he was young and wore his hair long. Maybe it's just the lighting, or the quality of the color film-stock that this footage was filmed on, but Thompson looks so very wan and pale here, he looks as though he could be half-Hobbit, or even half-Elf. More pertinently, perhaps, he looks like someone who's locked himself up (in a tower? Or more likely in a garret) brooding on spiritual wisdom and pouring over ancient holy books and tomes of ancient song; he looks as though he only allowed himself out in the sunshine to play guitar for the band, you know what I mean? I suppose I must sound awfully silly, saying all this (I mean, I know it's not literally true), but I still can't help thinking it.
Of course, the song oozes alchymy.
@@mattymetal3405 [24 June 2022] Thank you so much for writing back to me. I'm so glad you liked what I wrote.
"Now Be Thankful" does, indeed, ooze alchemy. I'm so glad you can hear it. I think that Richard, in his younger days, had an alchemical air about him. a supra-rational or supernatural air, anyway. The air of a mystic. That's why I admire him.
Beautifully worded. You most certainly don’t sound silly at all. I look at this video, at how young they all were, the beautiful music, the lovely chilled atmosphere of a summers day, people sat on the grass drinking wine. Happy days, I miss them. A lost time, but we will always have the music.
Swarbrick was as good a singer as a fiddler. RIP
Agreed! I always loved Swarb’s voice.
That singer has my favorite voice. And I love RT
“That singer” is Dave Swarbrick. And I always loved his singing voice.
@@lindsayheywood7195 I'm thankful
I am thankful, l just wished l was there. Great song.
LOVE this song and never thought I'd see a vid of this lineup playing it, back then.
Wow! Thanks!
Saw Swarb and Martin Carthy play in a pub in Manchester on a Sunday night ( 1970?) Lots of beers flowing and a packed upstairs room. Fantastic.
Swarb. 💚
I come home from the pub and listen to Fairport, looking for some solace to life's challenges and the impending death of some close friends. By the time I've listened to Swarb singing Now Be Thankful, To Althea From Prison and Rosie, followed by Sandy singing Farewell Farewell, Fotheringay and WKWTTG, I'm in bits.
I saw them live in 1970, at the Fillmore East in NYC on a triple bill with Mott the Hoople and Traffic. Pure magic!
Was at one of those Fillmore gigs, as well. Fucking great! Only regret was that Sandy had left before the U.S. tour started. They pulled it off most admirably, despite her loss.
Saw the Angel Delight lineup in NYC 1984, a year after many reunion lineups at Cropredy 1983!
I shot photos of them at the Fillmore West on that same tour. Still one of my favorite bands.
RT looks like Honeysuckle Weeks at the end of the Clip. Brilliant performance, RIP Swarb
This song captures beauty that is elusive and indefinable. It saddened me when I first heard it and still makes me sad almost 40 years later. It's so beautiful but I really wish I never heard it.
It's like something we all want and never seem to be able to reach. An utopia of humanity living in peace and harmomy.
like blind willie johnson's dark was the night, cold was the ground. bookends really..
Now I'll be Thankful
for the posting. More of this please.
According to the Sandy Denny biography 'I've Always Kept A Unicorn ' Judy was fired from the band a few days after this appearance on Baton Rouge.
I think I want this song played at my funeral.
I think this song will be played at the world's funeral
Add meet on the ledge. When I get to the border. Sam Jones Deliver them Bones.
Was just thinking that
Followed by Sandy singing Farewell Farewell...
Love me some Swarb.
A seminal band in the history of folk rock!
Sweet aching beauty.
Simply ... it's Fairport Convention-phenomenal
I ❤ this Song ... From Italy
I past time and sound to be thankful for. Here is to a bright future.
So nice to hear it again!!
Reminiscent of Wizard of the Worldly Game, very nice. Thanks for this great rarity.
Brothers, The stone is nay too cold for me. Peace.
Yea!love this
Loved this song since high school
So beautiful.
Simply the best.
Amazing musicians , amazing music.
My traditional Thanksgiving morning song.
Ditto!
Lovely.
Heard this for the first time in my life, today, Thanksgiving, 2011. I am thankful for WXPN (Penn U station) for once again providing hidden gems. Perfect belmd of poetry and music that just gives me that feeling that it's great to be alive.
WXPN is the best there is. I even became a member
@@davef6673 i remember it from the 60s
❤❤❤ beautiful 😍
I am thankful
Look how young those kids were.
This is great. I’ve never seen this live video.
Monumental.
Swarb was magnificent.
Yes he was. I always thought he was a great singer too, but apparently he didn't think so himself.
peace to all.
Is there anything in the world better than this?
Group sex on a pile of warm guacamole.
Meet on the Ledge? Actually, not better, but a nice counterpart.
Not much. I heard this for the first time today.
Most certainly not . This is amazing. Absolutely first class. 😁
Sandy singing Fotheringay?
Smokin'! Ya Ya!!!!!
I've heard this song interpreted as an allegory for Christian martyrdom. Cf. "sounds upon the wheel" = cries of martyrs broken on torture instruments and "red rose" = Christ's blood during crucifixion.
Informative. And much better than Daniel Green's comment!
I've always assumed it to be meant as a modern hymn.
Bravissimo. Elvis Costello praises this open-air version of RT’s great song-and then a more recent version, which has more “gravity” but is similarly “beatific.”
I love Swarb''s voice. He sounds so natural. So many singers - Martin Carthy, for example - sound like that they have "created" their voices i.e. they has been manufactured.
I love his voice too, but I think if you heard their speaking voices, if you haven't in the past maybe, you'd think that in their cases each voice when singing is a continuation of their non-singing voice. Martin Carthy has very precise diction, Swarb very different. Just a thought :)
@@franceskelly7316 Well, Swarb, clearly, just opened his mouth and it came out but we know that Martin based a lot of his style, phrasing and sound on old recordings of actual folk singers in the field,
@@musik102 I see what you mean, thanks.
@@musik102 the thing is … the old style doesn’t cut it for me, I much prefer the style Fairports & co crafted in the so called Folk Rock era
@@franceskelly7316 Well, we know Martin unconsciously developed his singing style by listening to old field recordings. Dave, clearly, just opened his mouth and sang.
The B-side "Sir B. McKenzie's Daughter's Lament For The 77th Mounted Lancers Retreat From The Straits Of Loch Knombe, In The Year Of Our Lord 1727, On The Occasion Of The Announcement Of Her Marriage To The Laird Of Kinleakie" Now that's a funny contrast to the dire mediaeval lyrics in this song. I really love the tune tho 😍
Τι κορίτσια και παιδιά!
This and "Hangman " should have been on Full House.
I came to enjoy Fairport due to Pegg's involvement in Jethro Tull. I never knew they did anything quite this beautiful. Sadly, I'd only heard some of the post Swarbrick output (which is nice too). The lyrics here might be interpreted as a bit gloomy though, don't you think? Still, I'm going to play this clip for my family when they visit for [the US'] Thanksgiving holiday coming up soon. Thanks for posting.
A bit? The lyrics are about violent torturous death
Would love to have a list of Judeo-Christian spiritual rock songs that are not Xian Psych (which is a great genre and I have the largest playlist on UA-cam) and are not CCM. These Judeo-Christian spiritual rock songs were often on the charts in the 60s and 70s.
Cut the judeo-part off and we’re good
Wish I still had hair like Simon.
Thanks to Cary Fields for this link!
Great video, I’ve never seen this one.
Almost hymn like
I've got the single.

Apparently Jerry Garcia thought very highly of the group.

Which one is Richard Thompson?
Curly hair...eyes shut...
what is the time signature for this song ?
Alternations of 4/4, 6/4 and 7/4.
hey if you count it slow it's V: 6/4, 5/4, 6/4 3/8. CH: 6/4 ,6/4, 4/4, 4/4. if you count it fast it's all in four (with one bar of 3 at the end of the verse), and some interesting phrase lengths.
This is so damn good. Question for all you Fairport Fanatics. Are they high during this performance?
Marc Landry probably
Does it matter?
Yes
Maybe

Thanks!
Love this track but too short i know Thompson ans Swarbrick but who is the one on the six string in a trance?
Simon Nicol
@@Cleapatr thanks ;-)
Simon Nicol, the most handsome man in the band. 😉 He has a fantastic singing voice and is an excellent guitarist.
Here's a relatively recent live video with Simon Nicol on lead vocal and acoustic guitar: ua-cam.com/video/wHWRYzXG9sU/v-deo.html
such a shame that swarbrick smoked himself to death. such a great musician
I've never heard anything like this.
All totally stoned?
