I got mine yesterday and this video helps alot, because the directions can be a little challenging so watching someone do it hands on is always better thank you for this informative video
Hi Charles 😃 Thank you for your comment. I'm happy you were able to receive some value from the video. I'm definitely a visual learner myself and find directions to be quite challenging. You can also check out step-by-step instructions in the description box to help out with the visual aid as well. I hope you enjoy yours as much as we do and thanks for watching! 😃
Super helpful video! I used the Opal for the first month with tap water and that was a disaster. I cleaned it without doing the overnight soak then with bleach and vinegar and that helped. Now I’ve gone two more months and it basically stopped working. Your video is way more helpful than the book that came with it, so I really appreciate the video. Thank you! PS. This ice is the best ever and I’m glad the cleaning hassle will be much less in the future now that I know how to do it right!
Hello Fortnite Broz 😃 First and foremost, thank you for your comment. I am happy my video helped bring a more visual perspective to the cleaning instructions and process. The steps do take a bit to complete but once finished, you can definitely taste a difference within the ice after cleaning. I hope you continue to enjoy your ice maker and that it works more often than not. Again, thank you for watching and for your comment. I will be posting another video soon to help out with removing the top and cleaning the inside.
@@kathyreyes1234 Hello Kathy 😃 Absolutely. I take off the top of the ice maker and clean the intake reservoir as well as the ice chute in the link below. Thanks for watching. ua-cam.com/video/1dtWie3rtYI/v-deo.html
I bought one from a shop that offers good deals, here in Phoenix Arizona, and because I am on a very limited income, I bought the floor model, meaning no instructions, so I totally appreciate you doing these videos. Now I just need to learn how to fill the reservoir, but so love the machine, I use distilled water, and love the crystal clear ice that it produces. ❤
Hello tammywhitten6248 😀 Thank you so much for your comment. I'm happy my videos were able to help you out. We use filtered water from our frig and we purchased the unit with a side water tank to keep a steady flow of ice. But again, thank you for your comment and for watching 😀
Dude! You rock, this video is superb. FYI if you don’t have the Opal Cleaning Solution, you can replace by using undiluted vinegar (per GE instructions) 👍🏼
Hello @ajasmund93 😀 Thank you! 😀We first bought the cleaning solution separately (back in 2019), but I have been making my own solution ever since with distilled white vinegar. Again, thank you for your comment and for watching 😀
Great job, very through you did not miss a thing! Every time I had a question the next thing you would say answered it! Thank you! Looks like I keep my Opal where you do!!
Hello Shawn 😃 Thank you for your comment! I'm happy my video was able to answer ALL of your questions. And yep, it's the perfect spot for our ice maker too - thanks again!
Hello jeriwiscomb6202 😀 You're very welcome! I clean it every 2 to 3 months using distilled white vinegar and water. And, thank you for your comment and for watching 😀
Hi Chloe. You can use a mixture of (5) cups of water and (1) teaspoon of household bleach in the meantime. Just make sure to run the pump about 3 or 4 times to ensure the solution is completely flushed from the system. You can copy and paste (print-out) the steps from the description box. Thank you for your comment😃
Hello Megan 😃 The little square piece can easily be removed to be cleaned...simply reach in and take it off the valve. The intake connector can also be replaced with a filter if needed - thank you for your comment and for watching. 😃😃
What does the cloth inside the top for 18hrs do?… Does the machine need to be turned on still with switch on cleaning mode? I have the same machine as you, where is the filter at to replace?
Hello @dirdirdeero5279 😀 Soaking a cloth in vinegar and placing it near the ice chute allows enough time for the vinegar solution to break down any mineral deposits or hard water buildup that may be present. However, the machine does not have to be turned on during this process. And, the water filter does not come with this unit, its sold separately (link below). The filter would replace the intake cap to the pump, inside the reservoir (bottom right). I hope this helps and thank you for your comment 😀 amzn.to/4g98vDH
Do you use filtered water from your fridge or distilled water? We have been running it with filtered water and have had mold build up. Within 3 weeks of cleaning. Thoughts?
Hello @SharonAhrenberg-wl2vi 😀We use filtered water from are frig, but haven't had any mold build up. There are hard water deposits caused by the water containing a high content of minerals, which cause (white flakes and/or streaks) calcium deposits inside the machine. However, OPAL recommends using distilled water for the ice maker, as the best result. I found the following article from GE Appliances website, which gives more insight. Click on the link below whenever you have time and thank you for your comment! 😀 products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=39625#:~:text=We%20recommend%20using%20only%20distilled%20water%20in%20your%20Opal%2C%20if%20possible.
Hi Christa 😃 Unfortunately, the cleaning solution is sold separately. The Opal cleaning kit use to be available on Amazon; however, you can click on the following link below to check the product on a different website: ulonet.com/product/opal-nug-t-ice-maker-cleaning-kit-green-p4inkclean__trashed/ Otherwise, you can just create your own cleaning solution using a mixture of bleach and water (1 tspn of bleach / 5 parts water) or distilled vinegar. Thanks for watching 😃
Please make a new video showing how to clean the Opal 2.0! I love my icemaker and want to keep it in top performance! I am trying to clean with vinegar now and will let it sit overnight! Initially I used the 5 cups water and 1 tsp. bleach but wanted a deeper clean after a couple of month's use. Hope you will make new video soon cleaning the Opal 2.0! I enjoyed and learned from this video! Laurie, Arkansas
Hi Laurie. Thank you for your comment. I would love to do a cleaning video on the Opal 2.0; however, we only own the first generation. Please click on the following link for instructions on cleaning the GE Opal 2.0 Model. ua-cam.com/video/X7KJH9U9QVE/v-deo.html For deeper cleaning: definitely allow the vinegar solution to sit overnight (18 hours) and then try flushing the system with the water/bleach mix a few times followed by draining the lines and replacing with fresh water several more times. The process is very tedious and not exciting at all but it should definitely help to remove those mineral and scale deposits. Let me know how it works out for you. Again, thanks for watching!
Hi! Do you unplug the machine while soaking for 18 hrs.? In between deep cleaning, how often do you clean the machine? Do you add bleach or vinegar? Thanks
Hi! You should keep the machine plugged in while soaking for 18 hours. This will allow for the cleaning solution to thoroughly cleanse everything from the back walls, ice chute, reservoir tank, and drain tubes. Afterwards, you can drain the tubes and add fresh water in order to flush the lines a few times. You should clean the machine every 6 months using a mixture of 5 cups water and 1 teaspoon of bleach if you don't have the cleaning solution from Opal.
I feel like I clean my ice machine every week. I keep getting black debris in the water. I was using the opal white water filter and the has been messing my unit up. Any advise? I removed the filter and place the original filter but the black stuff is still there.
Hello Yadira 😃We never purchased a filter with ours. We use filtered water from the frig and I clean the unit every 2 to 3 weeks. We normally unplug the machine and store the ice in the freezer....once supplies starts running low...we power it up again. For cleaning: I use a cleaning solution from Smart & Final called Coffee Pot Cleaner & Descaler by Maintex. Switch your unit into 'Cleaning' Mode and make a cleaning solution using vinegar or bleach (1-2 ounces of vinegar with 4-5 cups of water) or (1 tspn of bleach with 4 to 5 cups of water)? Next, allow the solution to sit inside the reservoir overnight after running the pump several times (with the drain lines plugged). Next day, unplug the lines and allow your machine to drain the water and any loose debris. Once finished, add fresh water and cycle the pump several more times to flush out any contaminants or stubborn debris. You have to continuously add water during this part ....to keep the pump from running dry Afterwards, fill the reservoir back up with fresh water and switch your machine back into 'ICE' Mode. Let me know how things turn out. You may have to do this a couple of times to completely remove the debris. However, thank you for your comment and for watching 😃😃 p.s. Apologies for the long-winded response but I hope this helps.
Hi Susan. The ice maker should not have the water filter inside during cleaning mode. If you are using a water filter, make sure to remove it prior to cleaning and then reinstall afterwards. Thank you for your comment. 😃
Hello Jeffrey 😃 The screen intake cap comes right off with little to no effort at all. Just make sure to remove the cap before running a cleaning cycle. Thank you for your comment and for watching.
Thanks for the video! I have ran a cleaning cycle and my poor water just trickles compared to yours...... it’s soaking in vinegar now I hope that works. I ran a bleach cycle before, rinsed and then started the vinegar.
Hi Dineke. Yeah, I think running a bleach and vinegar cycle will help to break up any scale or mineral build up throughout your machine. I hope that helps to improve your water flow too. Thank you for your comment.
Im watching this video seeing what's wrong with my ice maker and then I noticed in your video that the machine has a setting for cleaning and making ice. I then checked to see where it was and it's on cleaning, switched it to ice and now it's fixed. Thanks anyway I wouldn't have found that switch without your video
Hello. I'm happy my video was able to help you out. 😃 I definitely have to remind myself to change the mode back to making ice; especially, after running a cleaning cycle. Thank you for watching and for your comment!
Hello Wesley s 😃 I flush the entire system with fresh water 4 or 5 times after using a cleaning solution, and then I flush the system with boiling water to ensure ALL the cleaning residue has been removed. So, yes, the first batch of ice out after cleaning is fair game. Thank you for watching and for your comment 😃
Hello Paul 😃 Try filling up your water reservoir tank to the max fill line and prime the pump using this helpful video link below. ua-cam.com/video/VsYbUVw7_Qk/v-deo.html If that doesn't do the trick...definitely reach out to Opal's customer service at mypopalservice.com or contact (866) 907-6718. Thank you for your comment and for watching 😃
It seems like you are suggesting to replace the water that has the cleaning solution with fresh water and then run through the cycle three times with the same water? The directions say to change the water each time so that with each cycle you are fully flushing out the cleaning solution water. Just thought I'd mention that.
Hello SuburbanHobbyist 😃 I actually made an update for that within the drop down for the video. I also made an additional video with some helpful tips concerning just that. Good catch and thank you for your comment. 😃
Hi Shelby. You should allow the machine to sit for 18 hours first. Afterwards, drain the machine and reconnect the tubes filling it up with fresh water, and run the cleaning cycle. You should complete this process about 3 times to ensure the cleaning solution has been completely flushed out of the system. You can follow the steps from the description box. Thank you for your comment 😃
Hello @kimblack6006 😀 The filter is actually sold separately. I meant to say, "Make sure to remove the water intake cap inside the reservoir tank", which is what I forgot to do in the video. I included a link for the water filter so you know what it looks like: amzn.to/3Bmcr0q And, thank you for your comment and for watching. 😀
Thanks. The ice machine can develop scale deposits (caused by hard water) which can bind to float switches and evaporator plates that can lead to expensive repairs. Letting the unit sit for 18 hours while the cleaning solution is running throughout the system helps to break up those stubborn deposits and prevent any damage to the machine.
Hello Grace😃 No cleaning solution, no problem. And yes, you can use vinegar. I use white distilled vinegar to clean our machine. I normally pour 5 cups of water and 1-2 ounces of vinegar into the water reservoir, and start a cleaning cycle. Let me know how things turn out and thank you for your comment 😃😃
Great video! Mine didn't come with the cleaning solution, so I've been using vinegar. But I've noticed that everytime I rinse it out, there's white floating things in the water. I call them water ghosts 😂. Anyone know what this stuff is? My tap water has a LOT of chemicals/minerals in it so I've been using only purified water in it. I don't know if that's right either.
Hi Katherine 😃 Our machine didn't come with the cleaning solution (sold separately 😒) but using a mixture of vinegar and/or bleach does a pretty good job. So, water ghosts are haunting your machine.... "Who you going to call??" Ok, I'm really showing my age with the shameless 'Ghostbusters' plug 😜 Anyway, I think those white floating ghost(s) are due to your tap water (hard water) containing a lot of minerals / chemicals. The minerals are being dissolved when they start melting and they have no other choice but to haunt and float around in your reservoir tank. We use filtered water from our refrigerator and it seems to work out just fine for us. Opal states you don't really need a water filter; especially, if you're already using purified water. So, I think you should be fine going forward. Thank you so much for your comment! 😁
@@zidane182 Hello Patrick 😃 Mixing bleach and vinegar will create a highly toxic chlorine gas. You can use one teaspoon of bleach (or 1-2 ounces of vinegar) and 4 to 5 cups of fresh water....just make sure you're choosing either bleach or vinegar to create your cleaning solution. Thank you for your comment and for watching. 😃
Can you tell me where the filter is? I just got my opal today and I’m not sure if it came with one or not and also did not come with the cleaning solution so I’m wondering if my product might be missing some items thanks!
Hi Gail 😃 So, the water filter and cleaning kit are sold separately but can both be purchased on Amazon. The water filter would be placed directly over the intake valve inside the reservoir tank. And, you can create your own cleaning solution by using 5 cups of water and 1 teaspoon of bleach. You just need a sponge, cleaning cloth, and some Q-tips to reach those smaller nooks and crannies. So, I don't believe you're missing anything. Thank you for your comment 😃 You can look up the water filter on Amazon by clicking the link below: GE OPAL WATER FILTER: amzn.to/3jf3Fsi
My unit does not run water like that down the back during the cleaning cycle. It trickles down only one side and very slowly. Yours is like a waterfall. Does this mean mine is broken?
Hi Elaine 😃 Does their seem to be any issues with the production of ice when it's in normal operation? Are you using tap water, distilled, and/or do you have a filter installed? You can try priming the pump to check the suction of the water pump. Could be an issue regarding the pump. Checkout this helpful video which shows how to prime the pump. ua-cam.com/video/VsYbUVw7_Qk/v-deo.html However, if your ice maker is working just fine and ice is continuously falling....you should be okay despite not having a waterfall during the cleaning process 😃 Thank you for watching and for your comment.
Hello @sarahbeltran1674 😀 We actually had to buy the cleaning solution separately; however, you can make your own solution at home. A mix of 5 cups of water and 1 tsp of bleach would do the trick. If not, you can check out the link below which seems to be the best pick for cleaning the ice maker. In any case, thank you for your comment and for watching. 😀 amzn.to/4guQXTd
Hello chipmunktubetop 😃 You're very welcome. And yes, the opal cleaning solution hardly smells like anything at all after cleaning - thank you for your comment 😃
Hello Just Cliff 😃 I remove the intake screen in the water reservoir and most of them are carried out when draining the tubes. However, its hard to remove the majority of them. And. thank you for your comment😃
You should not eat or drink distilled water. It doesn't have the minerals you need in it its actually missing minerals so as it goes through your body it takes the minerals out of your body
Wondering why you filled up the basin with water at the very end when you were done cleaning? Isn't that just the area to collect melting ice water? Not sure why you would need to fill it up with water. Great video nonetheless. Thanks.
Hello Jake 😃 The reservoir tank (I filled up) is the main water source that is pumped throughout the system which begins the ice making process once the machine is powered on. The tank also collects melted ice and will restart the ice making process to help keep the ice bin full. However, we also have a side water tank connected to keep up with demand but thank you for your comment and for watching 😃

Hello @mariyahalicea4304 😀 Sure. You can create your own cleaning solution by using five cups of water and a teaspoon of bleach. Thank you for your comment and for watching 😀
Do you know how often the cleaning mode runs? My machine is new and it keeps blinking yellow. I did a cleaning cycle 2 days ago, but still getting this.
Hi Brianna 😃 The cleaning mode should only run when placed into that operation from the back of the machine. There is a switch in the back that can be placed in either "ICE" or "CLEANING" mode. A blinking and/or rotating yellow light means the machine is placed in cleaning mode. So, definitely check the back and switch it over to ICE mode. Let me know how everything turns out and thank you for your comment 😃
@@HomebodyReview it blinks yellow without being put in cleaning mode. Hopefully not for a while after all the work I have done to it these last few days
@@briannab1988 A yellow light can also mean the machine needs to be cleaned; however, you just completed a cleaning cycle 2 days ago. Do you have the GE OPAL 2.0 or the first generation? I would definitely contact Opal Support at myopalservice.com or try calling their customer care line at 1-866-907-6718 for further guidance. I hope this helps you out.
Same thing happens to mine. It goes yellow without putting it in cleaning mode. I have cleaned it every time it happens but after a couple days it happens again. I have had no luck contacting GE. If you have a solution let me know!
@@isabelaegan9913 Hi Isabela 😃 I'm sorry to hear about you not being able to reach GE. Our unit was lighting up like a traffic light too....just a few days after running a cleaning cycle. Possible Solution: (this worked out for us) try taking the machine through another cleaning cycle: unplug the unit, store left over ice in freezer, take the unit over to the sink, drain the lines, reconnect them, pour a mixture of vinegar and/or bleach (1 tbsp of bleach or vinegar and 5 cups of water) solution inside the reservoir, and allow it to sit overnight all over again. The light has not flashed yellow since and the machine has been consistently putting out ice. I think cleaning (18hr process) the machine at the end of every week has definitely been working for us. Let me know if this works out for and thank you for your comment! 😃
I still don't get how you unplug your water tank without getting water everywhere. There's a spigot at the back of the tank, so unhooking the hose makes it leak out the back. Is there a cap for the spigot? Do you pull your tank out first?
Hi Meebs Alot 😃 I normally have a large bowl or container directly next to the side water tank when breaking it down for cleaning. First, unplug the power to your unit. Second, if you have enough space, turn your unit so you have access to the water lines and you can see the back. Thirdly, remove the upper portion of the side water tank and place it over by the sink. Next, place the bottom portion of the side water tank into a bowl or container so water can runoff inside and not on your counter 😃 Next, remove the tube from the back spigot (of the bottom portion of the side water tank) pressing down firmly on the front end and holding upwards to prevent water from leaking out, and reconnect that tube back into the main connector port on the back. Last but not least, you can now take the unit over to the sink in order to start the cleaning process. Please let me know if this helps and thank you for watching and for your comment 😃
@@HomebodyReview You can disconnect the side tank without spilling a drop. If you simply hold the bottom portion of the side tank higher than the main unit, the water will drain into the icemaker and allow you to disconnect the side tank without spilling a drop.
Hello Jazn Jaimee 😃 The ice maker has a small filter cap over the suction pump inside the water reservoir tank (bottom right). However, I found a UA-cam video to help if you already have a filter: ua-cam.com/video/UUn5Rlg069Q/v-deo.html Hope this helps and thank you for your comment, and for watching 😃😃
@@HomebodyReview Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, we have an Opal01GEPKT. There is no filter in the location shown in the video. I’m just going to take it apart and give it a thorough cleaning.
@@jaznjaimee You're welcome.😃 Actually, we have the same model, which did NOT come with a water filter. Simply reach inside and remove the cap over the intake valve inside the reservoir. I always make sure to remove it when completing a cleaning cycle.
@@HomebodyReview So what I ended up doing was taking the cover off, then vacuuming the intake screen (not removable). There was a layer of dust and lint thick enough to cause overheating. Hi, first of all, thank you for such a great video! One question the opal directions talks about cleaning the sensors, but I am confused about where they are located? Are they up in the top? I am also wondering about the filter, not the little one that comes for the bottom but the filter that you can purchase from amazon? Is it just for taste? Our taste is fine, but I wondered if it would help with scale?
Hi! Thank you for subscribing. And yes, you're absolutely right. The sensors are located at the entrance to the top of the ice chute. You can use a q-tip, sponge and/or cloth with a little bit of white vinegar to clean the sensors. I also outlined a step-by-step guide in the description box of my video to help out with the cleaning process. Regarding the filter. To be honest, we don't have one ourselves. We just use filtered water from the frig. The filter helps to provide fresh tasting ice and reduces the amount of chlorine and odor. I think it's really about the taste more than anything else but to each their own. If you would like to look up the filter or read further reviews about it....I left a link in the description box titled: GE OPAL FILTER. I hope this helps and thanks for watching 😃
If you use a lot of ice in your drinks, do some reading on drinking distilled water. It's not the same as normal drinking water. Just want to make sure you are informed.
Hi Travis. You place either a vinegar-soaked sponge or a water & bleach combination at the top in order to to help break up any mineral deposits along the ice chute when its sitting overnight. Thank you for your comment.
Hi Nicole 😃 Ours didn't come with a water filter which is sold separately 😒😜 However, if you have a water filter, you definitely want to take it out when running a cleaning cycle. The filter should last for about 3 months until you have to replace it. But yes, definitely take the filter out when cleaning. I hope this helps and thank you for watching, and for your comment 😃
@@nicolehershman Ok, I think you you're referring to the small screen cap that sits over the intake valve....it's to the bottom right of the reservoir tank....that should be removed when cleaning 😃 A water filter would be installed over that same valve if you had one....reference in the link below: amzn.to/3BXoSOP
@@nicolehershman No hassle at all 😃 I definitely forgot to add that part in the video 😃 I tried to compensate by making a rather long and lengthy step by step guide in the description box: STEP 4 However, you can remove it by pulling it out towards you...just make sure to put it back on the same way with the top slanted edge facing upwards at the top. It's tricky to put back on with water inside so just remember to complete that step prior to filling the tank when your ready to put in fresh water (after the cleaning process).
Hello Irvman 😀 I made a point towards the end of the video to remind people to remove the intake screen (because I forgot) prior to cleaning, but hardly anyone makes it that far. Thank you for your comment and for watching 😁😁
Unfortunately no. I think the squealing issue is caused by mineral and/or scale deposits built up along the walls of the evaporator. It can also be noisy when the water level in the reservoir is low too. A problem with the water supply or a failed inlet water valve can also cause this problem.
@@ericktheking123 You're absolutely right. The process is slow and takes forever 😒 You literally have to open up the machine to clean and remove ALL the grime and nasty build up. And yes, the squealing noise can be caused by a variety of different things but that's another video for another day my friend.
Hi Cathy. Yes, you do have to drain the Opal 3 times with replacing the water and reconnecting the lines each time. I will definitely be making an update to the description box.
Good job bruh.. for safety reasons please wear nitrile gloves those chemicals absorb into ur skin.. also I would rinse one extra time to make sure all chemical residue is gone. Safety first.. that ice machine can really harm the body if we don’t protect ourselves.. blessings
Hello Lil'Ed Freemon 😃 Yes, safety above all else when cleaning with chemicals. Since posting this video, I have stopped using the opal solution and have been creating a mixture of water and distilled white vinegar (5:1). I normally rinse the unit 4 to 5 times after running a cleaning cycle just to make sure harmful contaminants have been flushed from the system. However, thank you for the feedback and for checking out the video.
Hello Jazn Jaimee 😃 The company recommends allowing the unit to sit overnight or 18 hours, just enough time to allow the cleaning solution to work its magic (dissolving any mineral build up or calcium deposits). Thank you for your comment and for watching 😃
Thanks for the help! I’m hoping I didn’t let mine go too long, it’s been a few months since I got it, and I haven’t cleaned it because we lost the cleaning instructions 🤦🏻♀️ Anyways, the way you showed the cleaning doesn’t look too difficult🙂
Hi Jennifer. You're very welcome, the cleaning process takes at least a day to complete which is not too bad. Opal recommends cleaning every 6 months so you should be okay. I also left a step-by-step guide in the description box, maybe you can copy & paste it for you future use. 😃
Hello @ricksmith7355 😀Good catch, I talked about forgetting to flip the switch back to "ICE" towards the end of the video, which would be after completing the cleaning process. You would then need to run the pump for at least 3 cycles with fresh water, to flush out the remaining cleaning solution. Once flushed, you can reconnect the drain tubes, fill the reservoir tank back up with water, and then switch your unit back into "ICE" mode. Hope this helps and thank you for your comment. 😀
The screaming sound you're hearing might be due to ice build up around the inner mechanisms of the ice maker. I'm not a fan of the screaming sounds either but it should start to go away after about 30 to 45 mins. Anything longer than that and I'd be making a service call. Thank you for watching and for your comment 😃
Hello Amanda 😃 Thank you for your comment. My apologies for the confusion. I unplugged the unit and disconnected the tube leading from the water tank and reconnected it back again so water wouldn't leak all over the place. I then drained both tubes over the sink and reconnected them in order to prepare for the 18 hour cleaning process 😜 I hope this didn't add to the confusion lol.
@@HomebodyReview that makes much more sense because even the pointless booklet doesn’t explain how the second tube magically appeared connected to the back and was afraid I was missing things all together. Thanks for replying. ✨

Hello Sydney 😃 I only use white vinegar to clean the inside. Apparently, dish washing liquid is not recommended by OPAL for cleaning inside the reservoir. They don’t breakup or kill the bacteria usually found in ice makers. I pour a mixture of water and white distilled vinegar inside and let it sit overnight.

Ahhh, nice easy steps, thanks bud!
Hello Enishidono 😃 Happy to help and thank you for your comment 😃
Thanks. I had a cheaper ice maker and could never get it clean. This really help me decide on buying one.
Awesome! 😃 I am happy my video was able to help. Thank you so much for watching and commenting! 😃
Thank you! How often do you clean it?
Hello jeriwiscomb6202 😀 You're very welcome! I clean it every 2 to 3 months using distilled white vinegar and water. And, thank you for your comment and for watching 😀
If you don’t have the cleaning stuff what can we use to clean it until we can get some
It looks like in the bottom right of the tank is little square piece for the intake. Is there a way to take that out to clean it?
Hello Megan 😃 The little square piece can easily be removed to be cleaned...simply reach in and take it off the valve. The intake connector can also be replaced with a filter if needed - thank you for your comment and for watching. 😃😃
Thank you
@@megansummers1154 you're very welcome
I hope this helps and thank you for your comment 😀

Good show and information
Hello John 😃 Thank you. And, thank you for your comment and for watching 😃

Thank you for sharing! Great video!!
Hello Tana 😃 Thank you very much!
My opal didn’t come with the cleaning solution! Where can I get some?
Hi Christa 😃 Unfortunately, the cleaning solution is sold separately. The Opal cleaning kit use to be available on Amazon; however, you can click on the following link below to check the product on a different website:
ulonet.com/product/opal-nug-t-ice-maker-cleaning-kit-green-p4inkclean__trashed/
Otherwise, you can just create your own cleaning solution using a mixture of bleach and water (1 tspn of bleach / 5 parts water) or distilled vinegar.

For deeper cleaning: definitely allow the vinegar solution to sit overnight (18 hours) and then try flushing the system with the water/bleach mix a few times followed by draining the lines and replacing with fresh water several more times.
I was told to clean it once per month.
You have to continuously add water during this part ....to keep the pump from running dry
Afterwards, fill the reservoir back up with fresh water and switch your machine back into 'ICE' Mode.
Let me know how things turn out. You may have to do this a couple of times to completely remove the debris. However, thank you for your comment and for watching 😃😃
p.s. Apologies for the long-winded response but I hope this helps.
Do you run the ice maker without the filter and only use it while in cleaning mode ?
Hi Susan. The ice maker should not have the water filter inside during cleaning mode. If you are using a water filter, make sure to remove it prior to cleaning and then reinstall afterwards. Thank you for your comment. 😃
Thanks for the help!
Hello Mia, you're very welcome 😃 Thank you for watching and for your comment.
How hard should it be to remove the screen intake cap as well? Does it just pry off?
I have the same problem. Did the soaking in vinegar work for you?
Another cleaning video says if you have hard water issues you should let the vinegar soak for 18 hours on the first clean cycle.
Bless you for sharing. Thank you!
You're more than welcome Grace - Happy to help😃
Im watching this video seeing what's wrong with my ice maker and then I noticed in your video that the machine has a setting for cleaning and making ice. I then checked to see where it was and it's on cleaning, switched it to ice and now it's fixed. Thanks anyway I wouldn't have found that switch without your video
Hello. I'm happy my video was able to help you out. 😃 I definitely have to remind myself to change the mode back to making ice; especially, after running a cleaning cycle. Thank you for watching and for your comment!
Thanks. Now I 'm sure that I'm not the only person who made that very simple mistake...
Would you not wanna dump the first batch of ice out after cleaning.

What if you don't have water coming out of both tubes?? I can blow clear through the tube but, only get water out of one tube which is a trickle
Hello Paul 😃 Try filling up your water reservoir tank to the max fill line and prime the pump using this helpful video link below.
ua-cam.com/video/VsYbUVw7_Qk/v-deo.html
If that doesn't do the trick...definitely reach out to Opal's customer service at mypopalservice.com or contact (866) 907-6718.
Do you run the cleaning cycle with the cleaning solution 3 times and then let it sit for the 18 hours and then drain and run fresh water?
Where is the filter you spoke of removing ?
Hello @kimblack6006 😀 The filter is actually sold separately. I meant to say, "Make sure to remove the water intake cap inside the reservoir tank", which is what I forgot to do in the video. I included a link for the water filter so you know what it looks like:
amzn.to/3Bmcr0q
And, thank you for your comment and for watching. 😀
Hi, great video! Why does it need to sit and clean for 18 hours?
@@HomebodyReview okay great! Please keep the great reviews coming?
Do you turn the ice machine off for 18 hrs while it’s sitting?
Can I use vinegar? Mine didn't come with cleaning solution
@@HomebodyReview perfect thank you
Great video!
"Who you going to call??" Ok, I'm really showing my age with the shameless 'Ghostbusters' plug 😜
Anyway, I think those white floating ghost(s) are due to your tap water (hard water) containing a lot of minerals / chemicals.
I have water ghosts too
@@HomebodyReview mixture of vinegar and bleach??? ☣️
@@H1N1777 That is ALGAE.
Thank you for your comment 😃

Checkout this helpful video which shows how to prime the pump.
ua-cam.com/video/VsYbUVw7_Qk/v-deo.html
However, if your ice maker is working just fine and ice is continuously falling....you should be okay despite not having a waterfall during the cleaning process 😃 Thank you for watching and for your comment.

Hello chipmunktubetop 😃 You're very welcome. And yes, the opal cleaning solution hardly smells like anything at all after cleaning - thank you for your comment 😃
I have the Firstbuild version and find it hard to remove the floating particulates in the water reservoir.
Hello Just Cliff 😃 I remove the intake screen in the water reservoir and most of them are carried out when draining the tubes. However, its hard to remove the majority of them. And. thank you for your comment😃
What about the filter at the bottom right?
I use only distilled water in my Opal ice maker, and it never has any mineral deposits that need to be cleaned from the machine.
Hello J.S. Sancrant 😃 Sounds good. We use filtered water from are refrigerator - it does a credible job with minimal mineral deposits.
I use Illinois tap water that comes from Lake Michigan and it never gets scale on the walls
You should not eat or drink distilled water. It doesn't have the minerals you need in it its actually missing minerals so as it goes through your body it takes the minerals out of your body
Flint Michigan Water keeps setting my ice maker on fire.
If I don’t use distilled water the ice maker makes a squeeling sound.

Next, place the bottom portion of the side water tank into a bowl or container so water can runoff inside and not on your counter 😃
Next, remove the tube from the back spigot (of the bottom portion of the side water tank) pressing down firmly on the front end and holding upwards to prevent water from leaking out, and reconnect that tube back into the main connector port on the back.

Thank you for watching and for your comment 😃
You can also use Vinegar.
Hello John 😃 Absolutely! Thank you for your comment.
We only use distilled water in our machine. We don’t have the hard water stains, makes much easier to clean.
Hello Cindy 😃 We use filtered water from are refrigerator. The hard water stains are a pain to clean but they keep me busy every week.
If you use a lot of ice in your drinks, do some reading on drinking distilled water. It's not the same as normal drinking water. Just want to make sure you are informed.
@@johnvrabec9747 Hi John 😃 Thank you for your comment and the tip!
Why do you put the sponge/rag up at the top?
Hi Travis. You place either a vinegar-soaked sponge or a water & bleach combination at the top in order to to help break up any mineral deposits along the ice chute when its sitting overnight. Thank you for your comment.

@@HomebodyReview Yes! The screen. In your video you don’t show how to remove it that’s what I was trying to figure out. Sorry for being a hassle
@@nicolehershman No hassle at all 😃 I definitely forgot to add that part in the video 😃 I tried to compensate by making a rather long and lengthy step by step guide in the description box: STEP 4
However, you can remove it by pulling it out towards you...just make sure to put it back on the same way with the top slanted edge facing upwards at the top. It's tricky to put back on with water inside so just remember to complete that step prior to filling the tank when your ready to put in fresh water (after the cleaning process).
You forgot to remove the water screen in the bottom of the tank, and clean it. I saw crap still in it after you did the cleaning cycle.
Hello Irvman 😀 I made a point towards the end of the video to remind people to remove the intake screen (because I forgot) prior to cleaning, but hardly anyone makes it that far. Thank you for your comment and for watching 😁😁
Will this help with the squealing issue??
Unfortunately no. I think the squealing issue is caused by mineral and/or scale deposits built up along the walls of the evaporator. It can also be noisy when the water level in the reservoir is low too. A problem with the water supply or a failed inlet water valve can also cause this problem.
But very effective. Just remember every pipe.
Good luck i spend about 3 hours cleaning slow process
My friend you have no idea what you getting in to cleaning when it makes that noise. You got to open it and clean every pipe line.
@@ericktheking123 You're absolutely right. The process is slow and takes forever 😒 You literally have to open up the machine to clean and remove ALL the grime and nasty build up. so you do not have to drain and refill the water 3 times. Just use the same water and push the button 3 times?
Wow, 18 hours?!?!?
Timing of when to move the switch back to ICE from CLEAN is suspect on these directions.
Why is mine screaming during defrosting mode?
The screaming sound you're hearing might be due to ice build up around the inner mechanisms of the ice maker. I'm not a fan of the screaming sounds either but it should start to go away after about 30 to 45 mins. Anything longer than that and I'd be making a service call. Thank you for watching and for your comment 😃
What about dust build up on the condenser? How do I clean that?
The tubes are confusing me. Mine is always connected to the water tank so they’re never connected together in the back like you showed.
@@amandam3719 You're very welcome 😃 And yes, the instruction booklet can be very confusing. I actually learn more by visually seeing what needs to be done rather than reading it. And, you're most welcome - thank you for your comment. 😃
18 hours?
Hello mrcartagena2000 😃 Yep. The company makes the suggestion in their cleaning instructions... I just let it sit overnight. Thank you for watching and for your comment. 😃
18 hours seems long?
Hello mseiler01 😀 18 hours is a long time by any standard. I actually clean our ice maker within 2 to 3 hours nowadays. It can be done without having to sacrifice the one thing that eludes us ALL...TIME. But, thank you for your comment and for watching 😀
I put dawn and apple cider vinegar inside to clean it lol
Hello Sydney 😃 I only use white vinegar to clean the inside. Apparently, dish washing liquid is not recommended by OPAL for cleaning inside the reservoir. They don’t breakup or kill the bacteria usually found in ice makers. I pour a mixture of water and white distilled vinegar inside and let it sit overnight.
How often do you need to clean it? I’ve cleaned mine once in a year ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Depends on how hard your water is hard water monthly I usually clean mine every 3ish months when I change out the filter as I use ro water
At least, monthly.
Is it just me, or does this guy sound like Tommy Vext?
Hello Jennifer 😃 I checked out an interview by Tommy Vext. I can hear it....it's not just you now.
Secret is Reverse Osmosis Water only!!!!!!
Hello Michael 😃 Thanks for the inside track... will take a closer look - thanks for watching!
I went through THREE of the POS machines and they all make this very loud noise after a few weeks and then stops making ice. I’m sick of fighting with GE only to have them send me out a refurbished machine that does the exact same thing! I think they’re just rotating these piece of crap EXPENSIVE machines to all their victims that made the mistake of buying their awful product!
Mine had mold. 🤮
Hello @L-sillybrained 😀 Sorry to hear that, hope you were able to resolve the mold issue.
Wow yours was really dirty. You need a water filter attachment to your sink
Hello Fall Guy 😃 We use filtered water from our refrigerator but most appliances end up a little dirty between cleanings. Which is why it's important to clean more frequently; however, thank you for your comment and for watching. 😃
