  • So in this video, I take apart my Opal Ice Maker to investigate a screeching noise that occurs when the system is making ice. This video will show you how easy this ice maker is to take apart to investigate any odd noises emanating from it.
This machine is pretty close to the VEVOR nugget maker so it might help to take a look at this one if your VEVOR is giving you problems

Our ice maker needed a deep cleaning as it had developed an algae problem. Thanks to your video I was able to open the unit and get to the internal reservoir to clean it our, as well as fix the banshee cries. Thank you very much, you video saved us from throwing away the unit and buying a $200 Frigidaire!

My Opal1B kept going into defrost mode. It would make a couple pieces of ice which would take forever and then the ring would go solid white meaning "defrost". I went through all kinds of cleaning (with vinegar and another time with bleach), cleaning the coil - blowing it with compressed air. This worked one other time but not this time. Your video gave me the confidence to open it up. The reservoir had a layer of calcium inside it but that didn't prepare me for what I found when I pulled out the spindle. When I pulled it out, at the bottom of the spindle the grooves were PACKED with calcium build up! It took quite some time scraping this rock hard build up off the spindle. Also, at the bottom of the casing was more calcium that was building up around the small hole where the water comes in. I scraped that out and sucked the debris out with a vacuum. I should tell the readers that you shouldn't scrape it with metal utensils like I did but "fingers crossed" that I didn't damage the walls of the casing that meet the spindle. Nevertheless, I put it all back together, did another vinegar cleaning and purging any debris that I wasn't able to vacuum and it's made the most ice ever! Thanks again for the tutorial, it got me going in the right direction.

Mine was getting loud after 3 years and your directions were spot on. I was surprised by how clean mine was. Just some minor build up in the white tank which I cleaned. I also had a little corrosion and some rust on the lag bolts. Like you, I didn't find a smoking gun. A couple of the white gaskets were a little slick so I wiped them off in case they were the culprit. It's back running again and no squeals yet. Hoping for the best.

Thanks for posting, I followed your instructions, soaked pieces in pure vinegar, including spindle, scrubbed with wire pad and bottle cleaner …. And machine is running much better! No squeak! Took me about 1.5 hr to complete. Good reminder to do the vinegar overnight soaks more routinely as we had a lot of build up around the bottom of spindle and on surrounding parts. Ours started this sound after 1.5 yr. Clean monthly and descaled overnight once in that period. Will be doing that more. Thanks again!

thanks a bunch for doing this video. we only use store bought filtered water and havent cleaned it in over 2 years. we leave it on and use it daily, but once it started squeeling it just got louder and louder with each passing day. finally i could not take it any more and decided to do the vineger cleaning. Well that didn't do shit, so time to dismantel this beast. The bottom of the freeze chamber was caked with crud. Took me an hour to scrape that out including that little orifice where the water comes in. I had to get a tiny wire brush to clean that. The rest of the cleaning was easy including the plastic holding tank. All back together and working well, thanks again

This is a great video as we have had ours for about 2.5 yrs. The noise just started. Did all of this and no more noise! The only thing is I had to do the gear box trick twice as no one tells you how much oil to put in it. First time noise was still there. Did the gear box trick again and added a lot more oil. Not tons but enough to get to everything in there and voila noise gone and it’s much quieter now.

We're on #2 of having this happen right out of the box. Had an original Opal that was dead quiet for the 6-7 years we had it. It just stopped making ice, otherwise I would have kept it.
It has been such a long time since I took it apart I can't recall if it used styrofoam or some other material to insulate the top of the ice maker. So now I'm curious if GE cut corners by using a cheaper material to insulate it with.

I have a Gevi V1 purchased through Amazon. Have received a replacment for noise, was told to throw the machine away and they sent another. Second was replaced due to a recall about possible metal in the ice. The third unit i have is now squealing after only days use. Based on lime formation after such a small period of use, I'm thinking they sent me a used unit as a replacement. I'm done throwing them in the landfill but thought I'd open it up...lo and behold it looks pretty identical inside to the opal, which I almost bought as a replacement till I saw many claims of squealing machines and got scared that the internals were similar. Guess I was right. I stripped a screw while disassembling but hope it works assuming I can get it back together!

This is an interesting video and it's great to see how everything comes apart and goes back together. But the manual does say that the screech means the machine just needs to defrost, which it does so automatically. But it is important to take it apart and clean it if you got black slime!

@@JONSDIY All visible lines are patent. And the spindle rotates with water flowing through it when "making ice". It doesn't feel like the chamber that the spindle sits in is getting cold enough to freeze the ice. Is there a repair manual or some way to to test the compressor? Is there a rest function?

    • @ashtonchilcote5093

@@jpouanestry taking the ice maker apart again. The water pump pumps water to 2 places- the bottom of the auger motor and the white reservoir with the float in it. Run the cleaning cycle with it taken apart and verify water flows out of both locations (the spillway on the white reservoir and the top of the auger motor). My auger motor was clogged internally so I pinched the hose going to the reservoir off and it forced more pressure to the auger motor which unclogged it.
When running in normal operation, when the ice maker is turned on several things will be initiated- the water pump, auger motor, and condenser fan. These will run for exactly 5 minutes and then the condenser will turn on. The condenser will not turn on if the ice bucket is not in the machine (there is a little switch it actuates on the top left corner) and will also not turn on if the sensors that tell if the ice bucket is full of ice is either dirty or something so obstructing the path between the sensors. Make sure those are clean.
There is a cap with a metal clip covering the electrical terminals to the condenser where you can verify that the condenser is getting power after that 5 minute interval. Remove the clip and cap and connect a volt meter to the red and black terminals. After 5 minutes of the ice machine running you should here the compressor turn on and there will be 120 volts across these terminals. If not, my guess would be several different issues- bad switch on the ice bucket, bad or dirty sensors, or a bad control board. There could also be an issue with the float in the white reservoir but not sure exactly how that plays into the logic for the ice maker yet. 6:15

Anyone have issue with overheating & no longer making ice? I made sure inlet & exhaust vents are clear (in this video it looks like one side could be blocked by the refrigerator) and I had a service guy come out and he said he couldn’t do anything - GE does not make spare parts for this unit. He thought the compressor might be shot which would really suck for something that isn’t even 2 years old.

@@landonphillips7013 ya I was Joking with that comment. But I'll tell you this. I have 3 of these machines and they have all failed one way or another. I have learned how to completely tear down and figure out a lot of problems. Most of which are caused by calcium build up in all the tubes. (Easy to clean, remove the tubes, and clean with warm water and a long pipe cleaner, like the kind you clean a baby bottle with.) One of my machines ran fine, sounded fine, but produced no ice and it turned out to be a broken gear in the transnission. That machine is now a "parts" machine to fix the other two.
These ice makers are great when they work, but so frustraring to maintain. Tap water, and any kind of "filtered" water will still build up calcium. The only water that is good on the machine is true "distilled" water.
Good luck, hope you can resolve your issues, and enjoy your ice.
