I used a turkey baster to prime the intake area behind the filter, and it worked perfectly for me. The advantage of using a turkey baster is that it's much more forceful than using a fingertip, as demonstrated in this excellent UA-cam video. After about 10 pumps, everything was back in action and working smoothly.
Thank you so much! This worked for my Opal first generation ice machine. I used Distilled water only, and clean regularly but it would stop after 15 minutes. I did everything you just did for both tube and a bunch of gunk in that tube that goes to the top drained out. It’s was gross. It took 20 times till everything was clear for mine. I used pure vinegar for this cleaning. Then flushed it out with water after. I truest appreciate it. Full ice bucket in less than an hour now.
YOURE MY DAMNED HERO AND I may get lucky tonight thanks to you. We had the white filter and I simply disconnected it and noticed - I couldn’t even blow through the filter it was so jammed up. All is well and God is good!
I use much more ice then the normal household. You can't find a better ice machine, buy the extended warrenty. GE's support team is awesome, they stand behind their product and are very easy to work with. Love it & them!
Level your machine. Thanks for your video. I had the same add water light issue after moving the machine to countertop closer to the sink. The pump was primed and moving water. I saw a comment that the machine needs to be level to work. So I checked mine and it was nearly .25 inches lower in the front. Shimmed it and now it’s working fine. So check its level. It could save you a lot of headaches and time.
I did a clean cycle like I normally do, and then it stopped making ice (no water warning). I figured maybe mineral deposits were released, and clogged something internally. I literally just did this exact thing in this video, figuring whatever was stuck I could force out (on that same tube - no water, just blowing it out). Worked like a charm.
Thank you so so much!!! As a daughter of a dad who always fixes things, I didn’t want to go to ask him to fix this haha. Proud of myself for fixing it and not having to get a new one! Thank you!!!
Thank you! We love our Opal and it had stopped working. I watched your video and I was able yo fix the problem!! It’s 4 years old and we keep it very clean. We left it off (empty) for vacation and came back and it would not work. I primed the pump and we have ice! Thank you so much!!
Amazing video!!! I was going crazy with this issue, and on the verge of scrapping the whole machine until I decided to do some research. I came across your video, tried the method, and it worked almost immediately. Thank you. ❤
THANK YOU!! I tried everything Google said and was ready to throw my 5 year old ice maker away. I did finger over the hole so it builds up suction to no avail but hadn’t heard of or tried the tapping method to force water in. And wouldn’t you believe it… it worked!! THANK YOU!!
Thank you so much for this! Mine has been having issues for a few months and if I let the water run out in the side tank it would not pull the water and produce ice. I had done regular cleaning cycles with vinegar and taken it apart and cleaned inside the small white reservoir box(which I highly recommend to everyone 😵💫) and it still wouldn't pull the water. I did the priming with my finger inside the base and that seemed to work. It looks like a small piece of plastic from the machine may have broken off and lodged in there. It was tiny. And I'm guessing each time the water went low, it would lodge. Thanks again for the tips so I could get mine working again! 5 years on and it's working like a charm!
Thanks, you just saved me $600. I used a little shot funnel and put it over the tube. Poured water into the funnel and blew the water into the tube. 5 fills and started to get backfill so I knew the air was out of the system. Works like a gem again!!
Thank you so much! I followed all the steps in your video and my ice Maker now works! I was so upset because I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. Thank you!! 😊
Hallelujah!!!! Ice machine working now!! We used a clean Turkey baster and stuck it in the hole under the water after removing the little square filter and sucked Water in and that did the trick It actually pulled lots of gunk into the water! The little square filter thing can be taken apart too and we were able to clean that with a toothbrush and hot water! We did not have to remove any hoses or blow into the hose!!
Thank you! I pulled the filter and it’s now moving water and will hopefully begin making ice. I love the side tank that comes with this machine but, I’ve also been frustrated with the issues it has come with too.
WOW, my ice machine had the same issue and I followed your steps that fix my machine. I was almost to the point of throwing it away. Thank you so much for your knowledge and I appreciate your making this video to show others. Thanks again.
Mine was 2 weeks old and had the "Add Water". I watched this video (Thank you!!). Tried the tube, blow air, water, thumb press over and over. That didn't work. I did it like 10+ times. I have the white filter in mine so I powered it off, took out my filter, powered it on and did the pulse thumb method as I could feel it sucking pretty hard. I maybe did the thumb press like 5-10 times and water started coming from the back like it's suppose to. It does this to flush out any old water from what I read so its normal. Thank you for your video as it helped me with my issue. I use only distilled water in mine and hope it last a long time.
So I bought one of these as a Home Depot customer return. Took the housing off because it was not pulling water and giving the add water light. The little pump didn’t seem to be running. I unplugged the pump and later plugged it back in after trying to test for voltage. I primed the tank line, no joy. I checked the pump again and I could hear it vibrating but still no joy. I finally, repriming the line to the pump, I could see air in the lines still, did the trick! So, my wife was happy to get the $375-$400 ice maker for $53.71!
Great video. I just purchased mine a few weeks ago. Ran into this video. I will definitely be saving this video just in case. However, I am a little amazed, how no one here mentions anything about having purchased an extended warranty for their machines. I purchased an extended four year warranty because it is an expensive machine. Hopefully I don’t run into any issues. If I do, I still have my warranty. Unless my warranty runs out, then I will definitely be using this video.
Awesome Job figuring this one out. Our Opal stopped working exactly like yours. Using this trick it is running again. I used a syringe to put water into the tube and blew into it. Only needed to fill the tube up twice to get it to prime the pump. But great video!
I was ready to throw mine out. the tip about filling the lines with water and blowing into them is the cure. thanks! if you still have issues, it's probably gunked up with black sludge. I gave up for about a week after doing the vinegar cleanse with no luck. I think that helps break it up but you also then have to fill both tubes with hot water, blow air into them and let them drain a lot. then run more cleaning cycles. I repeated those steps for about 2 hours tonight and it's working LIKE NEW again. the variable is probably the quality of your city's water. even though I run all mine through a brita filter before going into the opal, it still gunks up and you have to get those clumps out for the pump to work again... one other thing that's not intuitive is removing the screen filter box thing in the reservoir. I was trying to pull it toward me but you need to pull up at an angle because there are 2 little notches on the base that keep it in place.
I started with blowing through the tube and that didn't work for me so I went to the start of your video and tried forcing water back into it by using my finger. That DID work for me. I've never had this problem and have added multiple new filters to it. When I added the new filter today the pump somehow lost suction. Thanks for the tips very helpful.
My 2.0 has encountered this issue twice right after doing a deep clean. For some reason, after reinserting the white-water filter (not the tiny screen), I receive an "add water" alert and the system shuts off even though I can see water running through the machine. On both occasions, I removed the white-water filter to blow air through it, but it was impossible! With new filters, air passes through easily. However, when I reinstall a new filter, or the small screen that originally comes with the unit, it functions flawlessly. So, if you have a water filter and are getting this "add water" alert, be sure to check that your water filter isn't clogged!
You took a turkey baster with water already in it and pumped it into the white circle area? or was the baster empty to just do air, and was the reservoir full of water already?
Thank you. I tried your tips, but still couldn’t get it to prime. Then I took a small syringe and forced water through the white filter hole. It primed after about 3 squirts, and is working now. Thanks again!
Mine is the Orgo, it looks a lot like yours, mine circulates the water fine, mine just doesn't make ice, it stays very warm inside and gets foggy and water condensing on the glass, it shows making ice, but does nothing, if I unplug it and plug it in, right after I push power, it blows a little bit of some kind of smoke and it stinks.. It was a gift...
GE site says just put your finger over the inlet hold in the reservoir, in "clean mode" hold for 10-15 seconds. Let run in clean mode for 1 minute more. then switch to ice mode. Worked for me.
I love my ice makers as well. I was sad when the same thing happened to mine. I have Total Tech from Best Buy so I took it to them. They said it could not be fixed and gave me a new one. Much easier that way…😂.
IMPORTANT TIP: I had the same issue with "add water" this morning. The thing that worked for me was simply to elevate the side tank. This will use the water weight to force water into the pump. Make sure you always keep the side tank filled. The more weight, the better.
Mines doing the same thing however I use mine daily. I figure its the pump as I see no water draining. I’ll try this and give an update thanks for the video
Mine was actually the little pump was stuck. I had to take the 3 clips off the pump and open it and clean with q tip then the pump started working again. It was easy to get to in the back.
Very good video. I have the same issue but with the side attachment. I fill it up but I don't see the water go down, its only using the water from the internal water area.
Thank you so much for this video. I got my Opal ice maker working after it had been sitting for a couple of weeks. However, overnight, it went off and won't turn back on again. When I touch the power button, it flashes on for a second then turns off. It won't stay on. I've tested the circuit/plug. I've tried plugging it into another plug, nothing works. Other things work on the circuit. Any suggestions?
Son of a !! Are you kidding me? I wish I had found this video prior to taking my ice maker to Best Buy only to have it replaced with a brand new one. (I had the 4-year Geek Squad Warranty). They automatically replace the Opal's because they aren't serviceable. So, I did get a new one but had to buy a new 4-year (or 2 year) warranty if I wanted the new one to be covered. So, brand new is nice, but it's much louder than my old one. My old one was an Opal 2.0 as well and other than the issue you solved here, I had no problem with it. I did open it up completely and clean the scale on the inside a few times. You might be surprised how bad that gets even when you clean it on a regular basis. I didn't use distilled water in my old one, but I did always use filtered water and a filter in the tank so the scale build up inside was pretty bad and accumulated quickly because filters usually don't take that stuff out of water. But now I am using distilled water in my new one, so I hope that helps some. I might open this one up and strategically place (not to disrupt airflow) some fireproof sound deadening foam in it, but I don't know if that will really help much with the noise, which is mostly a louder higher pitched tone that wasn't present in my old one. It kind of travels through the downstairs. Thanks for posting this video, I just wish I had seen this about 5 weeks ago!! :) (hr!s
Instead of using my finger to force the water into machine... I used a syringe from those injector marinades from Walmart. Added water to the syringe 3 times and I would withdraw then force in the tube and presto
I filled my exterior reservoir and then raised it by about 6 inches. I held it up until all of the “out coming” air bubbles stopped and water started trickling into the machine.
I just had the same issue, happened because we let the side tank go empty, pulled air in the system. Simply fill the side tank, drop it in the side reservoir then disconnect the side tank and reservoir from the machine at the bracket, left the tank above the machine, the water flow from the reservoir down the line into the machine, be careful because it flows fast but it forces the water into the system.
@JustADad or anyone. Mine makes ice for 1 - 2 hours then goes in Defrosting mode (this started after I cleaned it). Now it will make ice for 1 - 2 hours, then goes into Defrosting and never makes ice until I unplug it, then power it back on. I don't think it needs defrosting, but it goes into that mode.
it's probably gunked up with black sludge. I gave up for about a week after doing the vinegar cleanse with no luck. I think that helps break it up but you really have to fill both tubes with hot water, blow air into them and let them drain a lot. I worked on it for about 2 hours tonight and it's working LIKE NEW again. the variable is probably the quality of your city water. even though I run all mine through a brita filter before going into the opal, it still gunks up and you have to get those clumps out for the pump to work again
We have had our GE Opal nugget ice maker for about 2 months. We tried everything in your video and it still is not working. Says it is making ice but it doesn't. We have a new filter, have descaled and cleaned with vinegar and it still doesn't make ice. It was working fine before we left the office for the holiday and came back and now it does not make ice. Can you help?
What happens is the tubes get clogged with hardwater. You can not push water into the white hole...lol. you turn machine on and put finger over hole on and off to help build up pressure on the pump. If pump is working correctly but still showing add water. The lines are partially clogged. Which can be fixed by blowing out the gunk.
Mine has just started saying add water even though the machine is actually drawing water. I can feel the pump working if I put my finger over the hole and I can see the water level going down. No matter how many times I turn it off and back on it still says add water. Any ideas of what to do besides returning it? I've only had it 6 months.
My pump seems fine (water running down from the top) but it is no longer making ice. Not sure what to do. Owned it a year but never set it up until yesterday. Ran perfectly. The next day (today) it just won’t make ice.
I have this icemaker, it quit making ice, and we couldn’t figure out what was going on with it,We did everything that was suggested by troubleshooting it. It still wasn’t making ice then we figured out why it wasn’t making ice because, the temperature in my house was in the 70s so the icemaker overheated,Even though I haven’t in front of a window, with nothing around it, so it get plenty of air, so if you don’t have an air conditioner in your house, to keep the icemaker cool this icemaker is a waste of money in the summer time, because as soon as it warms up in the home it quit making ice, and it won’t start making ice again until the temperature drops in the home. For the price of this icemaker, you can buy yourself a refrigerator with an icemaker.
Pump works on mine, suction seems good, water dribbles down... but no ice. Keep getting add water display, and the basin is full of water. Tried blowing water into both tubes, releasing both tubes before capping so the lines are full without air bubbles. Try and try again I guess. Also pushed water with finger repeatedly into intake (in reservoir) which sucks my finger. I maker isn't really making any unusual noise. Spent about an hour tinkering with it so far. Nada. :/
These ice makers are great if you only use them once in a while. But if you use them daily they are very high maintenance and after about two years they just wear out. I would not buy one again. If you need ice for a party you are better off just going and buying a bag of ice. If you want nugget ice for daily use you are going to have to throw down a couple of thousand dollars on a real commercial grade machine. These machines are for occasional use only.
I used a turkey baster to prime the intake area behind the filter, and it worked perfectly for me. The advantage of using a turkey baster is that it's much more forceful than using a fingertip, as demonstrated in this excellent UA-cam video. I've been an opal owner for 5 years, been thru 3 of em. This video is the best fix I have seen for this issue. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're welcome!
Three in five years tells me they are not worth the price.
I use much more ice then the normal household. You can't find a better ice machine, buy the extended warrenty. GE's support team is awesome, they stand behind their product and are very easy to work with. Love it & them!
Level your machine.
Thanks for your video.

Thanks! I almost threw mine away till I found your video and gave it a shot. It worked!!!
Thank you so much for your Support!!!!
Thanks!

Bro you are a life saver!!! I used the first method, tried the first method again in cleaning mode and started getting suction!
Worked instantly, you’re amazing!! I have been struggling with mine for a few days now and was considering getting rid of it, you’re a lifesaver!!!!
You're welcome!!
THANK YOU!!
Excellent!
Thanks! Worked great. I had to use the cleaning cycle to get it primed. Working now. Great video!

Maker now works! I was so upset because I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. Thank you!! 😊
Hallelujah!!!! Ice machine working now!!
We used a clean Turkey baster and stuck it in the hole under the water after removing the little square filter and sucked Water in and that did the trick
It actually pulled lots of gunk into the water!
Great to hear!
WOW, my ice machine had the same issue and I followed your steps that fix my machine. I was almost to the point of throwing it away. Thank you so much for your knowledge and I appreciate your making this video to show others. Thanks again.
You're welcome!
This fix worked flawlessly. I certainly appreciate the information and helpful hints.
We have tried everything to fix ours. Watched multi videos. Yours was the first that said about blowing out the line. It worked!!!! Thanku!!!!
Awesome
Thanks for this video..
Helped me get my wife’s (personal ice maker) going in minutes!!

Thank you so much!! Worked perfectly. Saved me from trying open it. Used a turkey baster to blow water in and prime the pump.
Thank you so much for your video!!!!! I love this ice maker but the maintenance is a pain in the butt.
Thank you so much. This is my second unit. We took the filter off and it works perfectly.🙏
You're welcome!
I went step by step, and the last one did the job! Thank you so much! 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Great job!
Awesome Job figuring this one out. Our Opal stopped working exactly like yours. Using this trick it is running again. I used a syringe to put water into the tube and blew into it. Only needed to fill the tube up twice to get it to prime the pump. But great video!
Glad it helped

Thank you! Just finished doing your suggestion and it worked!
Glad it helped!
This worked!! I'm so happy I could cry❤
The little finger pumping helped!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
1:40 in and we have suction. Awesome fix. Thanks so much!

Instant fix! You’re a genius.
Thank you so much for this video! Although my model is different, priming the pump worked to fix mine.
Godbless youtube and fellow citizens like yourself
I had the same problem and used a turkey baster and pumped water through the opening in the tank. Works perfectly!
You took a turkey baster with water already in it and pumped it into the white circle area? or was the baster empty to just do air, and was the reservoir full of water already?
@@lauraw.5568 the reservoir was already full, used the turkey baster full of water to force water into the white intake tube.
@@rwmorrisonjr thank you so much!!! :)
How do I know if my reservoir has water? Did u take it apart?
@@andreaneedham-j2c I did to clean it out. You'll know it's full and properly primed when water starts running down the back of the main compartment.
LIFE SAVER!!! Thank you so much, this did the trick 🙏🏼
Thank you. I tried your tips, but still couldn’t get it to prime. Then I took a small syringe and forced water through the white filter hole. It primed after about 3 squirts, and is working now. Thanks again!
It worked after like the seventh time. Thank you.
Blowing in the tube for the top tank unclogged some dust that came out afterwards. Thanks!
That's awesome! I'm so happy it worked!
Thank you thank you thank you! I was at my wits end and this worked!!
Excellent!
Thank you so very much! I was about to throw away my OPAL. It is making ice after I did you steps and blowing the tube!!!
Omg sir I thought it broke so I went and bought another one ☹️ then I came across your video and now it works lol well now I got 2 😂
Glad I could help
Thanks so much this worked for me!
Great to hear!

It worked perfectly for me. Thank you very much.
Glad it helped
Thanks so much. I fixed the problem.
ur the best thanks for all the help!
Thank you so much for this! Worked like a champ!
Excellent!
Mine had great suction so I simply added water to the max line and now sh'e's producing nicely!
GE site says just put your finger over the inlet hold in the reservoir, in "clean mode" hold for 10-15 seconds. Let run in clean mode for 1 minute more. then switch to ice mode. Worked for me.

Thanks for sharing
I'd also like to add instead of blowing on it. I used a Turkey baster for the tube.
Great suggestion it works. Mine keeps running water through basket. How long before making ice? If it keeps running & no ice is that a bigger problem?
Good job, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
IMPORTANT TIP:
I had the same issue with "add water" this morning. The thing that worked for me was simply to elevate the side tank. This will use the water weight to force water into the pump. Make sure you always keep the side tank filled. The more weight, the better.
This is a key step. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
We don’t use the side tank and it works great. 👍
Mines doing the same thing however I use mine daily. I figure its the pump as I see no water draining. I’ll try this and give an update thanks for the video
It’s working but it looks like I have to do this every time it stop making ice. Thanks again
wow, are you keeping enough water in the reservoir

Very good video. I have the same issue but with the side attachment. I fill it up but I don't see the water go down, its only using the water from the internal water area.
maybe blow in that line and see if it bubbles up

Thank you. I will try this. But my problem is, I cannot get the white filter removed! Any tips on how to get the filter out?
Fantastic!
Many thanks!
Thanks!!
Welcome!
Instead of using my finger to force the water into machine... I used a syringe from those injector marinades from Walmart. Added water to the syringe 3 times and I would withdraw then force in the tube and presto
The water is running down the back but it never makes ice and eventually shuts off?
Ohhh... New studio?
Hope you like it!!
I filled my exterior reservoir and then raised it by about 6 inches. I held it up until all of the “out coming” air bubbles stopped and water started trickling into the machine.
you can do that with a basting tube.
Oh I could just kiss your cheeks! Thank you so much!!! We hadn’t used ours for close to a year and I was afraid it was a goner, your trick worked!!!
You are so welcome!
Followed your instructions, it’s working again , put a new filter on and it won’t work with the filter on. Any suggestions?
Our opal is doing the “add water” but it also started screaming like f!ght!ng cats!! 🤞🏻 that your video helps us!
I’m pissed. I didn’t pay 700 dollars for this thing to have to manually pump water into the machine🤬thank you tho.
it's probably gunked up with black sludge.
When I blow into the tube, water comes out the side vent!? Certainly, that can't be good!?
Mine has just started saying add water even though the machine is actually drawing water. I can feel the pump working if I put my finger over the hole and I can see the water level going down. No matter how many times I turn it off and back on it still says add water. Any ideas of what to do besides returning it? I've only had it 6 months.
My pump seems fine (water running down from the top) but it is no longer making ice. Not sure what to do. Owned it a year but never set it up until yesterday.
Ran perfectly. The next day (today) it just won’t make ice.
I think you need to open up the cover and clean the fan area as the machine needs air to circulate.
Mine does that’s makes the water in back and everything then it does it again saying add water
Nada. :/
When mine does this I take a turkey baster and blow the water in the drain hole. Clears it immediately.
