as a rule of thumb, if ANY company that provides a physical product (meaning besides software stuff) can afford to advertise with content creators...it's most likely complete shit, cheap to produce and lacking in warranty. You can't otherwise spend these crazy amounts of money on advertising $10-$100 products. You'd have to sell way too many to cover the cost, even with a 40% markup. I'd beet the markup is way higher simply cause of how dirt cheap these things are to mass produce.

Here are the key takeaways from the video on Athletic Greens (AG1):
    1. AG1 is a popular health supplement heavily promoted by many podcasters and influencers.
    2. The video creator, Adam McDonald, is a performance nutritionist who analyzed AG1's ingredients and dosages based on scientific evidence.
    3. AG1 contains a good range of vitamins and minerals, making it a decent multivitamin substitute.
    4. The probiotic content in AG1 is highlighted as a selling point, but the effectiveness of probiotics in healthy individuals is questionable according to current research.
    5. Prebiotics (fiber from fruits and vegetables) are considered more beneficial for gut health than probiotic supplements.
    6. AG1 uses a proprietary blend, which makes it difficult to determine the exact quantities of each ingredient.
    7. Based on the FDA labeling rules and the order of ingredients listed, many of the supplements in AG1 are likely underdosed and may not provide significant benefits.
    8. The video suggests that the effectiveness of many ingredients in AG1 for healthy individuals is limited, even at proper dosages.
    9. The creator speculates that the popularity of AG1 among podcasters might be due to lack of nutrition expertise and financial incentives (30% commission for affiliates).
    10. While AG1 is probably not harmful, its benefits may be neutral to very modest, and the claims made by the company are considered unsubstantiated by the video creator.
    11. The video suggests that consumers should be clear about their health goals and how to measure progress when starting any new health, fitness, or supplement regimen.
    12. The creator advises viewers to be cautious of "silly games" in health and fitness, implying that AG1 might not be the solution to all health problems as it's sometimes portrayed.

My biggest concern was actually that I started AG1 before it was so popular and after seeing it flooding all my social media advertisements space including youtube videos, podcasts, etc, I thought "Oh this company has a loooot of budget in marketing and advertising" and this became a red flag to me. When something is too good to be true, and very expensive, you have think twice about it. It's not a bad product, it's just a very well marketed useless product in my opinion.

You can’t take a supplement for a few months and expect it to make you feel better. I’ve been taking it for 1 year now. I don’t feel any different or better. @sigmastodon Рік тому +4

@@aristotlekumpis7095 I definitely don't agree with what you just said. Of course you should feel the difference after a few months. I feel the difference in my sleep if I stop drinking. I feel the difference in my focus if I start eating too much carbs. My digestive system is out of schedule if I don't have enough fibers. You supplement because you're in lack of something. My food is enough for my body, therefore supplementing is just a waste of money and trying AG1 confirmed that. I also think there are many other ways taking supplements help people: placebo, having a routine, thinking about health issues. These are important concern and if it fits your lifestyle and you're happy with the product, great! I just felt like I was giving money to a marketing machine without any benefits.

This is a very informative and great video. I have been taking AG1 since my second child was born approx. a year ago. I will say I have noticed a difference. I have only gotten sick once and that was when my entire family had the very bad stomach bug and I didn't take it for 2 days straight. I also often swim a mile and play soccer and I can say that since taking it my recovery time has come down. I am in my mid 30s now and recovery times going down are noticeable. Having said all that, I do eat healthy and occasionally very unhealthy, but I was not taking any form of daily multivitamin before taking AG1. So that could explain the massive boost I have seen since taking it. AG1 is quite expensive but it is working great for me. I also work a job that requires me to get up at 4:30 am everyday and I am not always good at going to bed on time and have 2 children under 3. AG1 also helps a ton with my early morning energy levels on sub optimal sleep. My advice, do what works best for you.

    Thanks!

    • @AdamMc192
      @AdamMc192  Рік тому +5

That's a very good point. I only realised that after watching back.
So here is my thought process>
      1) What am I trying to improve with my health? Am I trying to target a specific thing/marker?
2)Am I just trying to provide overall gut health and longevity?
3)Are there specific ingredients in AG1 that I want to look at taking/that I have heard are good for my health?
Most people aren't going to be trying to improve a specific health marker.
2 of the major benefits of fruit + veg is the fibre and potassium.
So I personally would take a fiber supplement (if you don't eat enough fruit and veg) as there's little fibre in AG1 and I would eat 1 piece of fruit (talking about the minimum viable option here). One banana has 50% more potassium in it than one serving of AG1.
I would also get a multivitamin (www.labdoor.com for 3rd party company that tests supplements and choose one of those).
Those would be the absolute minimum.
You might then look at some of the adaptogens like Ashwagandha that's in AG1 and say I want to try an effective dose of that.
Ultimately it's going to be hard to replace eating fruits and vegetables and it's not easy to consume more. I do try to help clients find fruit and veg they like, that are easy to prepare or no prep at all, that are affordable and that are less perishable (frozen for example). Then I try help them find ways that are frictionless to implement those into their day to day and over time add more if feasible. That would be the best way to feel your best and strive for optimal health.. but it's not as easy as drinking a powder.

I was taking AG1 for a while after Hubermans recommendation. I think that I wanted it to work more than it actually worked. I also over time realized that cheap green powders had a very similar effect at a fraction of the cost. So I stopped and now focus on effective doses of cheaper and more concentrated supplements, for example wheat grass powder. Great analysis.

I did not feel any gain in energy, stamina, mental sharpness nor any of the other benefits mentioned. I've been taking athletic greens for the past 4-5 months and I think it's made a positive change in my mood and energy levels. I train several times a week in the weight room for strength competitions, so sleep and nutrition are my top priorities. I already eat a diverse diet, but sometimes I don't hit my fruit/veggie goals for the day and this helps. I'd rather take this than a multivitamin because I feel this is more bioavailable.

I mix the powder in my morning smoothie, 5 grams a day, plus take another 14 grams of other home made vegetable powders per day, for knee and joint problems. (I'm 63)

When choosing supplementation it's important to put a product in the context of your entire protocol and diet. Suplements dont fix poor diet. I take more than ag1 between pre-workout/neuro- stimulants etc that includes common ingredients to ag1 that would otherwise be undertones but together get me in the correct range. Subjectively I've felt more benefit from ag1 than a standard multivitamin supplement and it helped me simplify how many different vegetables I need to eat regularly.

There is some research on the benefits of probiotics for IBS, but "gut problems" can be a vague and grey area unless you specifically have been diagnosed with something. You could also just get the same stuff for cheaper by eating better and or taking a multi-vitamin with some extras on the side. AG1 is very over priced.

I very much appreciate the deep dive here. Probiotics is a big red flag for me as a pharmacist. Since I'm also a patient with some GI concerns, I've done the deep dive on probiotics, and as you said, the short answer is that for healthy people, there's little to no evidence of benefit. Typically the sales pitch is to tell people that because they've got [x] symptom, it must mean their gut microbiota is out of whack and they need to buy some product to fix it. It's modern day snake oil sales. There are real benefits from probiotics, but those are specific cases. I think there's a lot more to that story left to be uncovered, but for the overwhelming majority of people, eat a healthy balanced diet instead of processed foods and if you're really concerned, eat a yogurt for breakfast in the mornings and see if that improves things.

I’m a long-standing nutritional fanatic because I believe every important decision I make is predicated upon it (physical or otherwise) and while I found this stuff to be weak af after one trial, and getting a refund, I think it’s an excellent place to start in general for the general audience demographics watching these podcasts who are looking for an on-ramp into a more comprehensive approach to body health - and as a former vitamin supplement specialist for consumer products I find it much more efficacious and trustworthy then the majority of what is available in tablet form.
Lastly, as far as podcasters are concerned, Andrew Huberman has proven to be consistently rigorous in presenting public education that is both peer-reviewed and transparent and he has never indicated at any point in any public conversation that I’ve observed that he ventures outside of those parameters, and he claims when he promotes ag1 on his episodes that he’s taken it consistently both during and before the existence of his public education platform (not accounting for his time educating at Stanford medical school), which is why he supposedly feels confident in endorsing them from personal experience.
    Great info!

Ya, AG1 has been his main affiliate supplement since his podcast. Even if it is all a stunt, he's very consistent, which does make me believe it works for him.

What people often ignore is that even experts in a field are influenced by personal bias, logical fallacies, and cognitive dissonance. An expert who believes something works is much more likely to promote that thing, even if its actual benefits are minimal. And when that person reads research reports, they are more likely to apply positive interpretations to even marginally beneficial results, while at the same time discounting or ignoring results that are critical. That happens even without financial incentives affecting the expert's recommendations.
In addition to the people you mentioned, I recently saw an interview of Dr. Peter Attia who mentioned AG first among supplements he takes. He did disclose that he is an investor in AG. In my experience Dr. Attia is usually reliable in basing his views on best available research. However, he mentioned none of the concerns about AG presented in this video. In fact, he stated that a glass of AG in the morning is equal in nutrition to a full day's consumption of vegetables. Based on the details shown in this video, it seems clear that Dr. Attia's statement about AG is not close to being correct.

@worldcitizenra to be fair nothing in this video compare it to a full day of eating veggies though. That's not what's being discussed. A full day veggies can cover many different scenarios and is a very imprecise term. And by no means will a full day of veggies necessarily cover all necessary micronutrients and fiber types etc. Since, you know, veggies are vastly different from each other. So a I believe Attia is not lying here,.it's just a relatively meaningless statement from him.

@@HansenFT - I did not say that this video compared AG to a full day of vegetables.
My comment referenced a video I saw in which the interviewer asked Peter Attia his recommendation for nutritional supplements. The first one Attia mentioned was AG. He specifically said that he sometimes doesn't eat enough vegetables. So, he drinks AG every morning. In that way he is covered for vegetables for that day and if he eats vegetables later, those are just a bonus. My comment was related to nutritional influencers who over hype their recommendations.

Just came across your channel, Adam. Very impressed by how well you give science-backed reviews that get right to the point. So many "influencers" out there like Humerman probably know better but are more concerned about making money than people wasting their money.
