Tulu had its own script..which was the precursor to Malayalam script... Kannada hegemony, especially post 1900s forced Tulu literature to adopt Kannada script....
Tulu did not have its own script. It developed later during Tamil Sangam period. Tamil Sangam literatures like Kurunthogai, Natrinai, Purananuru describe in great detail King Ezhimalai Nannan (of present day Tulu region) as kings who spoke "nedumoli" (people with imperfect Tamil), and "tirivumoli" (people with impure Tamil). Those days Tulu didn't exist, and it was the age where Tamil was being distorted by outsiders and different linguistic regions began developing in the south. Later Ilanchetchennai sacked Paazhi, the capital of Ezhimalai district, because Nannan's reign came to decline and more disturbances from the north started coming and Nannan couldn't handle it.

Not bad my brother from Tamilnadu. Why are you clubbing Kannada, Lingayat and Tamil in the Title of your video? The early Kannada kingdoms like Kadamba and Ganga were not lingayats, they were brahmins and jains. Linagayatism started only in 12th century after Basavanna.... continued....
Continued..... Hopefully, you are not in some way suggesting Tamil is older and better than Kannada....! If no, then very good. For those Tamils who say Tamil is better than Kannada, here are some points to think about: Most scholars say today's South Indian languages belong to 4 language groups and Tamil and Kannada belong to "South-Dravidian --> Tamil-Kannada" group making Tamil and Kannada equally old. For a language to gain status and become widespread, patronage by powerful kings is needed, and perhaps Kannada did not find patronage under the Satavahanas, Nagas, Chutus who ruled Karnataka unlike Tamil which found great patronage under Pandya, Chola, Chera. It was only after 5th century under the kadamba and ganga dynasties that Kannada literature got supported. But clearly Kannada language existed in low-key oral and written forms much before 5th century. The Talagunda & Tyagarthi inscriptions prove it existed in written form by 4th century, and Kannada words found in Ashokan edits, Ptolemy's works, Chariton mime, etc. prove that Kannada (or an ancestor of present-day Kannada) existed in oral form even in 250 BC. Before 250 BC, we can only conjecture... perhaps an ancestor of Kannada belonging to "Tamil-Kannada" family existed. Secondly, antiquity is only one dimension, we must also consider the later growth of the language. Kannada got influenced by Sanskrit and grew in parallel with Sanskrit producing large body of literature under Chalukya, Rashtrakuta, Hoysala, Vijayanagara, Mysore kingdoms spanning many fields like Grammar, Astronomy, Mathemetics, Medicine, etc. Kannada also spread northwards into other regions of India like Maharashtra and Andhra. Perhaps the same cannot be said for Tamil. Note: I'm not saying Kannada is better than Tamil, only saying one cannot compare and conclude either this or that is somehow better.

Kannada is a child of Sanskrit and Tamil. Kannada did not exist before c. 2000 BC. It is a Dravidian language of Vedic origin. Modern or Vedic Tamil is also a child of Sanskrit. Archaic Tamil belongs to c. 6000 -4000 BC. It was the language of the Indus Valley and the Sumerian civilization. It is more than 3000 years older than Vedic Tamil and Vedic Kannada both of which emerged after the Aryan Invasion of India. Both are only found in the deep south and nowhere else in India or the world. The Brahvi language in Baluchistan (Pakistan) is the sister language of Archaic Tamil. The Sumerian language has numerous Tamil words. Ur means home town or native place, Aar means river, Ko means king and mountain, Ziggarat or Zigaram means tower, Kara (Kari) means black - Karakoram -black mountains literally, Arali in Sumerian means oleander in Tamil. The list goes on and on. The Sumerian period is roughly c. 4500-2500 BC. The script of Archaic Tamil was the Indus script. It was used in Mesopotamia and in the Indus Valley (Pakistan). Kannada appears suddenly out of nowhere around c. 1500-800 BC, which is roughly about 3000 years after the disappearance of Archaic Tamil in India and after the Aryan Invasion. So, where are the roots of Kannada? Nobody knows!

The creator of this clip doesn’t sound like a fluent/native speaker of Kannada (😀), so excellent effort! Kannada did not descend from Tamil (Malayalam did, a thousand years ago), and neither did Tamil from Kannada. Current scholarly conclusion is that they both had a common ancestor language and branched out from it between 1000BCE-500 BCE. No one knows what that ‘proto-language’ was called by its speakers, or what it sounded like, but based on well known phonetic transformations between phonemes. G, T and K, for ex. /g/ in a word in one language is /ch/ in another, and so it is highly likely that the source language had a /k/ in that or similar word. Linguists and phoneticians have done much scholarly work on this - for ex., see “The Dravidian Languages” by the great Bhadriraju Krishnamurthi, published by Oxford U Press, where he masterfully reconstructs words in a Proto-Tamil-Kannada and indeed Proto-Dravidian spanning all major Dravidian languages of today, including Telugu which was a central Dravidian language. Furthermore, one must not conflate a language’s antiquity with the script that it was written in. Ancient Tamil was very likely spoken around 500BCE as did Kannada, but Kannada’s writing before about 2nd cent CE has not been found. The ‘nisidi(memorial)’ shaasana of Gunabhushita in Kannada is now thought to be from 2nd or 3rd Cent CE. Tamil’s style of inscriptions in long texts was much influenced by Kannada epigraphy (See the great Linguist S. Shettar’s “Sangam Tamilagam mattu Kannada Nadu Nudi” and his magnum opus “Halagannada”, which I have read in full. Sadly both these greats are not alive now. K and T are both old languages with a long history of literature, next only to Samskrita (tamil 2nd, Kannada 3rd) among all the literary languages in use in India today

Our Tamil literatures speak extensively with records of how Ilanchetchennai (father of Tamil legend Karikala Chola) allied with Ezhimalai Nannan of Tulunad and thrashed the Mauryas and Guptas. Later Ilanchetchennai sacked Paazhi, the capital of Ezhimalai district, because Nannan's reign came to decline and more disturbances from the north started coming and Nannan couldn't handle it.

Thank you.
