    As several others said, there is almost no VR content focused on work-related use. Finally someone started posting videos on this!
    You're right about the focus aspect of VR, it is definitely easier to get in the zone when there are less visual distractions.
    Another aspect that is unique to VR is the sense of scale. When I'm immersed in Google Earth, for instance, I find it so much easier to make decisions about modeling a 3d building compared to simply looking at reference images. When it comes to designing large props or environments, there's no contest-VR takes the experience to another level.
    Thanks so much for the informative videos and keep up the fantastic work!

    thanks for uploading this! ive been watching a ton of videos about VR just for the purpose of working in a virtual environment with a multiple monitor setup on the go. just one question how's the resolution? is it a lot of difference between these two?

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR  Рік тому

      The resolution is not as good as 4k monitors IRL for sure. However, the resolution is totally good enough to work. You can experiment with screen size and position in VR to achieve clean, crisp text that is completely workable. But you will definitely lose some resolution compared to IRL. The VR hardware just isn't there yet.

    really nice video comparison. Isn't latency an issue? I've been using the xreal beam and it's fine cabled, but miracast is super laggy. What's immersed like?

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR  Рік тому +2

      Latency is almost never an issue for me. Sometimes it crops up a little, especially if I'm pushing the system with all 5 available screens while in an active, public environment with lots of other people/avatars all around, moving and talking. For those instances, Immersed offers WiFi-Direct and USB-Wired options, both of which help with latency. I also use the "VR Mouse" to reduce the perception of latency. But usually, the standard wifi connection is sufficient with latency being low enough such that it doesn't matter. However, keep in mind the primary use-case... this is for productive work in VR. i.e. coding or using Excel or whatever. If you're trying to do high-performance gaming or something like that, the latency will be unacceptable for sure. But for normal productive work, I usually don't notice the latency at all.

    • @cameroncameron6800
      @cameroncameron6800 Рік тому +1

      @@WorkInVR that's great to know. Do you know technicallyh how it works? I don't imagine it's wifi direct. I was expecting that we'd only see low latency (for video) with wifi 7 now that they opened up new a range of new frequency bands to support higher throughput.
      I'm really curious about this and how you'd use this type of solution without a wifi router.

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR  Рік тому +1

      @@cameroncameron6800 I don't know technically how Wi-Fi Direct works, but my general understanding is that it eliminates a network/router hop. So, normally, when your laptop and headset are connected to your Wi-Fi, the screen data is streamed from your laptop, through your local Wi-Fi network and into the headset. This is similar to how a Chromecast works. Using Wi-Fi direct, you turn your laptop into a mobile hotspot. Then, you change your headset Wi-Fi connection settings so your headset connects *directly* to your laptop. In this manner, the screen data is streamed directly to the headset without having to travel through your Wi-Fi network, thereby making it faster. I hope that helps! You can see some how-to articles here: medium.com/immersedteam/wi-fi-direct-8ec23c74fdab and here: medium.com/immersedteam/immersed-wifi-direct-for-windows-9b31a3e4c421

    • @cameroncameron6800
      @cameroncameron6800 Рік тому +1

      @WorkInVR I've been doing some reading and watching your videos. It's not entirely clear how it would work, as I'd expect wifi direct to disable internet unless cabled. However I think it's also worth mentioning to viewers of your channel that wifi direct would give people the ability to use immersed outside of a routered environment e.g. Park, train, Cafe or parked car. This is interesting to maybe share with your viewers if this is the case as many don't know this. Many also think that technology isn't at the point where latency isn't an issue. It certainly is news to me.

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR  Рік тому +1

      @@cameroncameron6800 Great thoughts! I'll have to run some experiments with Wi-Fi Direct (i.e. no internet, cabled internet, Wi-Fi internet). However, I believe that, with a Wi-Fi Direct connection, you have the connection to your screens, regardless of whether you have internet coming to your laptop. Immersed also offers USB Tethering. This works on a similar principal to Wi-Fi Direct. With USB Tethering, your screens are being streamed through the cable so it's lower latency. I just did an experiment... while connected via USB Tethering, I turned off my laptop's Wi-Fi completely. I lost internet (obviously), but Immersed continued to stream my screens. So yes... your use case of using Immersed outside of a routered environment (i.e. park, train, cafe, parked car, etc.) will work... 100%. This could be useful if you want to do work on your laptop with your screens in Immersed, but don't have internet. Wi-Fi Direct *should* work the same way, but I haven't tried it. I'll have to try that and do a video about it! 😁 Here is some more info about USB Tethering in case you haven't seen it: immersed.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/14823473330957-USB-C-Mode-BETA

    You think it's possible for the quest pro to replace a laptop. So far, from what I've seen it pretty much requires a computer to pair to. Is there any way to use something like immerse and pair with a phone or just work on it stand alone?

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR  Рік тому

      Some people do use the Quest Pro as a laptop replacement. But that only works if you can do ALL your work in browsers. The Quest Home environment allows you to spawn up to three browser windows, so if ALL your work can be done online, you don't need a laptop! Using a headset for other (non-browser) apps is definitely coming. This is commonly called PCVR. However, it is still a ways off. Most of us need native apps. To use native apps today you need something like Immersed, vSpatial, or Horizon Workrooms. Currently, I do not know of any way to pair directly with a phone. However, Immersed does allow you to mirror your phone as an independent screen. I have a video about this here: ua-cam.com/video/H5F_RMPy_MU/v-deo.html

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR  Рік тому +1

      Hi there!
      Certainly not a stupid question!
      TL;DR: Yes!
      Details: I actually don't know, because I haven't used Workrooms yet. However, from what I've heard, the experience/improvement is the same between Immersed and Workrooms... so yes, there is a noticeable text clarity difference. Let me explain why... To be clear, the increase in resolution is technically NOT significantly better (when you look at the specs). Yes, there are more pixels per inch with the Pro, but they are spread over a wider field of view (a good thing), so technically, it is only a small increase in resolution... it's not dramatic. However, the biggest thing that makes it FEEL like a dramatic improvement are the pancake lenses. With the Fresnel lenses in the Quest 2, the only truly sharp text is that which is viewed through the exact center (or "sweet spot") of the lenses. So if your eyes are looking even slightly outside the exact center of the lenses on the Quest 2, the text will be slightly blurry. The further outside the sweet spot you look, the more blurry the text will be. However, with the pancake lenses of the Quest Pro, anywhere you look on the lenses, the text will be equally sharp. Since it is literally impossible to always keep your eyeballs focused through the exact center of the Fresnel lenses of the Quest 2, you always pick up some of that blurriness. With the Quest Pro, the pancake lenses make that "sweet spot" issue go away completely. So on a very real, practical level, the text is sharper with the Pro. That is the reason why the Pro FEELS so much more crisp even though the pixels per inch of visible FOV is not dramatically higher. So this effect is present no matter what app you're using; be it Immersed or Workrooms.

      @A_New_Reality Рік тому +1

      Thank you so much for your detailed reply! It's genuinely very interesting to see that, despite a slight reduction in resolution from the Quest 2 (Pro = 1800 x 1920 per eye & Quest 2 = 1832 x 1920 per eye) those pancake lenses make all the difference. I know what you mean regarding the centred 'sweet spot' on the Quest 2. I think I'll pick up a Pro in the new year, looking forward to trying it out. Subbed and please keep up the great informative videos - much appreciated! 😀

    I thought about buying the quest pro but with the quest 3 around the corner I’m not to sure about it. I want to stick to the quest 2 until it’s clear how good the screens of the quest 3 are with the better resolution and the better lenses.

      Hi there! A lot of people are waiting for the Quest 3. The largest advantage of the Quest Pro over the Quest 2 is the pancake lenses. This makes a world of difference when it comes to text clarity! The Quest 3 will have pancake lenses. So, honestly, you're probably good to wait for the Quest 3. It will save you some money. However, Immersed just announced the Visor: www.visor.com/ We don't have pricing or a release date yet, but that will have 4k per eye resolution! • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR  Рік тому +1

      There are two things at play here... if you're talking about the white "outline" around passthrough windows, you can hide that by disabling your hands. You may already know this, but to disable your hands, looking at your palm and touch your thumb to your ring finger. When you do this, you'll see your hands change color. When your hands are disabled, if you look at your palm, then the back of your hand, and back... your hands will be gray. When your hands are enabled, your hands will look gray when you're looking at your palm, but when you look at the back of your hand, you'll see that your hand is brightly colored (the actual color depends on your theme) and you'll see the laser emitting from your palm (like Iron Man shooting something 😆). But, when your hands are DISabled, you will not see the portal outlines, nor will you be able to move them or your screens. However... I realize you may not be referring to that. If you're talking about the very edge of your screens, then yes, sometimes there are "artifacts". It makes the very edge of your screen look like there is a single pixel thick shiny, shimmery white border. That is something that is mostly out of Immersed's control (due to technical reasons I don't understand). However, you can minimize this effect by adjusting the "Supersampling" slider setting. If you dial up the supersampling slider, the shimmery effect will lessen, but your text will start to become blurry. The trick is to balance that setting such that the shimmery effect is reduced, but you still have sharp text clarity. I think I have mine set at 0.3. But to my knowledge, the only way to completely remove the shimmery artifacts is to push that slider all the way up. That will remove the artifacts, but the text will be way too blurry. So it's a balance.

So cool that you're getting your Pro. Looking around in the pro is so much more natural than the Quest 2 due to the pancake lenses. You no longer have to keep your eyes centered on the lens sweet spot. Your eyes can flit and roam around the screen in VR, just like you would IRL and everything is still clear and sharp. You should pop into the public rooms in Immersed and say hi! 👋 And, really... you shouldn't insult Wes Chatham by saying I look like him! 🤣 I absolutely LOVE the Expanse. What resolution do you run your screens at when in VR? I’m used to a large 4k at 100% to maximize screen realestate. I tried working in VR a couple of years ago when I got my Valve Index but the resolution was simply too low to be productive, however, I love the idea of pinning my windows all over and running unique backgrounds.

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR  Рік тому +1

      Hi there! My current set up of choice has 4-screens. First, there is my laptop. I'm running a Windows Surface Laptop 3. It's default settings IRL are: resolution = 2496 x 1664, scale = 150%. When in Immersed, I leave the resolution alone, but change the scale to 125%. This gives me more real estate to play with, while still keeping things comfortably readable. This is a slightly square-ish resolution and I use this as my primary (center) screen. Then, IRL, I have two external monitors. They're both set to their defaults of 1920 x 1080. I put those to the left and right of my primary screen. So those three screens IRL just flow into Immersed. No problem. Finally, since I often use a terminal window for my work, I enable a single virtual screen in Immersed, set its resolution super small (1280 x 720) and pin that screen above, and to the left of my three main screens. For me, this is the most natural/comfortable. No, this is not 4k, but I really like this set up and there is lots of screen real estate. You *can* bring in higher resolutions with the IDD drivers for Windows ( github.com/roshkins/IddSampleDriver ) or the BetterDisplay drivers for Mac ( github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay ). In fact, I once experimented with a "double-double-wide" screen in Windows using the IDD driver (5760 x 2160), so this single screen could push SIX standard 1920 x 1080 screens (three on top, and three on the bottom). However, I had to make the screen so huge in VR that it was fairly unwieldy. Additionally, pushing that many pixels created a bit of annoying lag. It wasn't unusable, but it wasn't ideal either. By the way, I'll be making a video about that topic soon so keep an eye out for that. With my ideal setup (described above), I fall right into productive flow every day. I love it! But one of the best things about Immersed is that you can play/tweak/customize your screens until your heart's content. There are many, many of us who use Immersed all day, every day, and I would venture to say that every single one of our set up's are different. That's the real power of Immersed... you can truly dial in what works for you. Screens in VR are NOT 4k. They just haven't been able to pack that many pixels into the hardware yet. It's coming... but it's not there yet. So if you *must* have that kind of resolution, then VR isn't ready for you yet. However, I spent most of my career on screens that were far lower resolutions than 4k and they worked just fine. I know it's hard to "step back" from ultra-high resolutions. I totally get that. But you *can* do it. The resolutions are good enough to work comfortably. It really comes down to preference. Give it a try some time. Like... a really good, hard college try. I think you'll find that you *can* learn to live with VR resolutions. Before you know it, you won't even think about it anymore... as you work from a space station orbiting the Earth... with co-workers (avatars) from all around the globe... with 5 screens the size of IMAX movie theater screens... 😁

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR  Рік тому +1

      You are correct. Immersed updated the software to remove the "pinning" concept. So you can no longer pin your screens and passthrough windows in place. The solution to this is to disable your hands by looking at your palm and touching your thumb to your ring finger. So the solution is to enable your hands, get everything set up just the way you want them, then disable your hands. Now, when you move around, you won't accidentally move things.

      Hi there! Immersed works by installing a small "agent" software on your laptop. Then you install the Immersed app in your headset. Provided the laptop and headset are connected to the same wi-fi network, they will talk to each other over wi-fi. Immersed actually has "wi-fi direct" as a way to effectively remove latency altogether: ua-cam.com/video/qy_WsQ64DEU/v-deo.html On my normal screens, I don't experience any perceptible latency so I don't bother with wi-fi direct. However, wi-fi direct has helped other users who were experiencing lag. Generally speaking, the more pixels you're pushing (i.e. streaming to the headset), the larger the lag will be. So if you're running 5 screens and you have drivers that allow them to push unusually large resolutions, you may indeed experience more lag simply because the data streaming to the headset is vastly larger. But, with "normal" resolutions (i.e. 1980 x 1020), you probably won't notice any perceptible lag. Immersed also has a "VR Cursor" which has absolutely no lag, even if your screen mouse has a small amount of perceptible lag, so you can experiment with that as well.

With the Quest Pro I can actually read the labels on the keys of my keyboard. Passthrough on the Quest 2 is helpful for "gross key location", but you definitely can't read the labels. So the Quest Pro is definitely better... but not perfect. I personally think that the real value of the Quest Pro comes from EXTENDED use. So, if you use the headset A LOT, then it's really worth it. If you're a casual user, then you're probably better off saving the money and sticking with the Quest 2 or waiting until the Quest 3 comes out. Current rumors suggest that the Quest 3 will be out sometime in late 2023. It will be cheaper than the Pro, but it will have better resolution and color passthrough just like the Pro.

The Quest 3 will have Pancake lenses as well so the general expectation is that there will NOT be a huge difference between the Quest Pro and the Quest 3. The major difference will be price (the Quest 3 is expected to have a lower price compared to the Quest Pro). However, the Visor will have 4k per eye! It's a small sample size and I've only been using it for about a week, but it seems that the Pro is indeed performing with lower latency. I usually run 4 screens and my Quest 2 has only ever run hot 2 or 3 times over the last year. Each time it ran hot, I restarted the headset and it cooled right down. One advantage of VR for folks whose eyes aren't that great, is that you can create MASSIVE screens... like REALLY HUGE. So sheer size can help with text clarity. But, yes... hardware improvements are very important to text clarity. The Quest Pro took a leap forward in text clarity due to the pancake lenses. With the Quest 2, you have to look through the center "sweet spot" in order to get crisp text. You can't swing your eyeballs around... you have to move your whole head. With the Quest Pro's pancake lenses, you can now move your eyeballs around and text is crisp everywhere. So that is a HUGE improvement. However, VR hardware still has a very, very, very long way to go. I look forward to future headsets for sure! Oh... one other thing... if you wear glasses IRL, be sure to get prescription lens inserts for your VR headset, regardless of whatever headset you use. Here is one vendor: www.reloptix.com/ For those who wear glasses, these lens inserts are a complete and total game changer!

      Oh gosh... where to start?! 😃 You're right about portability. A laptop and a headset lets you spawn up to 5 screens! You're also absolutely right about focus. When I started with Immersed, I thought the focus stuff was hype. But, it's very similar to using noise-cancelling headphones to block out audio distractions. When you wear the headset, you block out visual distractions. I love to do both headphones and VR. In that way, you might as well be in your own world... so focus is huge! It's amazing how fast you can get into the zone when you have no audio or visual distractions. When you don't need to focus so much (perhaps you're doing lighter work), it's amazing to join the public rooms for co-working. I've made many friends in the Immersed public environments. We work together nearly every day. It's fun to get "watercooler talk", but then we also do a variety of focused work sessions (i.e. the pomodoro technique, and others). Often, working "next to" other people inspires me to do better work. So working "with" people is truly amazing. Also, being able to spawn 5 screens is amazing. You can spread out all the resources you need at a glance on various screens. Being able to glance around to see your code, app, database, reference materials, communications, etc... reduces the cognitive friction versus having to ALT+TAB around to find things. Also, I like making the screens massive... like the size of movie theater screens. That makes it easy on the eyes. Lastly, it's just super fun to be able to work on a space station... or a beach... or a mountain lodge... or a downtown café... or a high-rise conference room... or... or... or... It's just freakin' cool! 😃

      Great question! I can't answer it from a technical perspective. But generally speaking, the headsets require a lot of power for all the processing needs for all the sensors and compute that is packed into these things. All headsets have very poor battery life - usually 1-2 hours tops, no matter what you're doing in VR. Using the battery is just not practical for all-day productive work in VR, so most of us work tethered. When you're working in Immersed, that's not a problem since you're usually sitting or standing at a desk anyway. in fact, neither the upcoming Immersed Visor nor the Apple Vision Pro will have a battery on board. @WorkInVR  Рік тому +1

      Honestly, it may be a product of my age. I'm 53 years old, so I was writing code in the late 90's. At that time, the state of the art monitors were 14 inch analog CRT's that were suuuuuper blurry by today's standards. I got used to that because I had no other choice. ("Back in my day... I had to walk to school in the snow... uphill... both ways!" 🤪) The Quest 2 is WAY better than those were, and I worked on them for years with no complaints. So, yes... switching from todays 4k screens IRL to the Quest 2 was a hard transition a couple years ago. You're not wrong that it's pretty awful by comparison. However, even as bad as it is, it's totally readable with comfortable, relaxed eyes. I just had to decide if all the other benefits of working in VR (multiple easily resizable screens, fantastical environments, co-working with people all around the globe, etc.) were worth the sacrifice of that resolution. For me, it was. For others, it's not... and that's totally ok. I'm definitely an early adopter of this tech. If the text clarity of your Quest 2 is truly blurry/bad, then perhaps you need to adjust your IDP settings, brightness/contrast, sizing and positioning of screens, color themes, font size, etc. If you search for terms like "text clarity", "pixel parity", or "resolution" in the Immersed Discord (immersed.com/community), you'll find lots of conversations on these topics with many tips and tricks to help you maximize the clarity with your Quest 2. You can do it... but I'll admit... you gotta want it! @WorkInVR  Рік тому +1

      @@Jdb63 Thanks for the kind words! 😊 I can guarantee the Quest 3 text clarity will be much better than the Quest 2 due to the pancake lenses. With the Quest 2 Fresnel lenses, you have to continually look through the lens "sweet spot" (the area in the center of the concentric circles in the lenses) in order to see crisp text. This forces you to "keep your head on a swivel", but keep your eyes looking forward, always through that sweet spot. That is not a natural way to look at a screen. The pancake lens technology has no such restriction. So, with the Quest Pro (and the Quest 3), you can let your eyes "roam" all around the lenses and wherever you look, text is crisp. That is a much more natural way to look at a screen... just like IRL. That is why, even though the pixel per eye improvement between the Quest 2 and the Quest Pro is not that dramatic, the experience is *wildly* better in the Quest Pro. So you will have that same experience when you move to the Quest 3. When you get your Quest 3, try Immersed again. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the improvement! When you're back in Immersed with your Quest 3, stop by the public rooms some time and say hi! I also hope that the Visor lives up to its promises. I grabbed my Founders Edition within minutes of when they opened it up for pre-orders. I can't wait!

      It's possible your IDP wasn't adjusted properly, or maybe you needed prescription inserts. It's hard to tell. You can also work with sizing and positioning of screens in VR as well as font-size and dark themes, to dial in your comfort level. I used my Q2 all day for software development work for almost a year. No problem at all. But it's totally understandable if the resolution/clarity wasn't good enough for you. Many people are tripped up by text clarity struggles. The good news is... with the Quest Pro and the new Quest 3, you have pancake lenses - no sweet spot! So those headsets are muuuuuch better to work with. And, with the upcoming Immersed Visor, we'll have 4k per eye resolution! So the tech continues to improve. Maybe you can try immersed with a more modern headset and see what you think!

      There are things you can do to optimize your display to get it to be relaxing on the eyes using the Quest 2. However, the Quest Pro definitely has a noticeable increase in sharpness and clarity.

    The fit on this for VR gaming is horrible. Way to loose. This is headset for AR.

      Yeah, I only use it for productive work so I can't really comment on VR gaming fit. However, (as shown in this video) I wear a ballcap on backwards when wearing my Quest Pro and that helps it to be a snug fit. Also, I assume you know about the tension dial on the back. That can help get a snug (but not too tight) fit.

    if youre spending more than 40 mins a day in vr youre currently damaging your eyes. meta will not currently be releasing the data on that. dont say you wernt told. youre welcome.

      This is not true. Additionally, a blanket statement like this is not helpful. Let's look at some actual, helpful information...
      VR AND NORMAL SCREENS HAVE THE SAME RISKS:
      The main risk for ALL electronics (computer screens and VR) is "Digital Eye Strain" or "Computer Vision Syndrome". This happens when your eyes dry out because you don't blink as much when staring at screens. This is why it is important to blink often and take frequent breaks for ALL screens (normal and VR). Another risk is blue light. Blue light exposure doesn't damage your eyes, but it can interrupt your sleep cycles. Both normal screens and VR have blue light filtering to help with this. So again... no difference between normal screens and VR. It is true that the old VR Fresnel lenses required you to look through a VR lens "sweet spot". This required you to move your eyes less and move your head more. However, the pancake lenses in the new Quest Pro eliminate that. You can now look anywhere in VR lenses with perfect clarity. Just like real life.
      IN MANY WAYS, VR IS ACTUALLY BETTER FOR YOUR VISION:
      In real life, it's easier to focus on an object 20 feet away, than it is to focus on an object 2 feet away. This is because focusing on more distant objects allows you to relax your "eye accommodation". In VR, you are focusing on objects much farther away than normal screens, so it is more relaxing on your eyes. In VR, your eyes can DIverge more (be more parallel). When you look at a normal screen, your eyes must CONverge more (go more cross-eyed) to focus. So your overall "eye vergence" is more relaxed in VR. Long term, this reduces eye strain. VR can also be helpful for users who have existing eye damage or low vision. They can make screens truly giant (like the size of IMAX movie theater screens) to see them better. Additionally, VR can actually help people who have a lazy eye to help strengthen their weak eye.
      If you want detailed research and analysis about the effects of VR on your eyes from an Optometrist, look at the videos on "Dr. Eye Guy's" UA-cam channel: ua-cam.com/users/DrEyeGuy
      TL;DR:
      VR is actually easier on the eyes than real world screens. Take breaks, blink often, and you'll be just fine.

      @@WorkInVR ive been teaching VR since the DK1 (google that if you dont know what that is). After EXTENSIVE on the job EXPERIENCE for 7 years im telling you that data is gong to be proved wrong in about a year from now. putting any screen that far from your eyes for any longer than 40 mins is actually about as insane as it sounds. headaches happen for a reason.Listen to your own body not gathered " current data" to suit your argument.

      @@PolytronikDigital Fair enough. I appreciate your opinions. VR does not give me headaches. I regularly co-work with people who have been using VR full-time (all day, every day) since mid-2018. I've been using it full time (all day, every day) for over a year now. None of us have had any negative effects on our eyes or bodies by using this technology. This sounds suspiciously like the people in the 1990's who claimed that putting a cell phone next to your head will give you brain cancer. I suppose time will tell and you may be right. You may tell me "I told you so" someday. I appreciate your warning because I'm sure you're honestly trying to help people, and that's great. But for now, I'll trust my own experience as well as the experience of many other VR early adopters / heaver users. I'll also trust optometrists who have studied this and tell me there is no significantly different risk between VR screens and other screens.
