Immersed - No More IRL Monitors
The latest agent software update from Immersed prevents connecting your computer to Immersed if you have additional, physical monitors connected. In this video, I show my solution for reducing this friction, making it super quick and easy to go from multiple monitors IRL to multiple screens in Immersed.
UPDATE: I had a bit of a "duh" moment thanks to a couple friends of mine on the Immersed Discord (TizzyBizzy & janusz.magujato). If you don't want the expense of a second docking station, you can power your external monitors into a switched power strip. Simply flip the switch to power your monitors off and back on again! 🤦‍♂️

    I got got a quest 3, moved up from quest 2, downloaded immersed, watched a few instruction videos beforehand, a problem I've run into is the 3 VR screens aren't independent of one another, I have 1, 2, 3 screens set up from left to right, going off my real life laptop, I click a folder in the middle screen and it pops open on the left screen, I click itunes on the right screen and it opens on the middle screen etc. This can't be right can it? kinda defeats the purpose. Also, can you position the screens freely and get them off that cursed grid? I move a screen off the grid then try position it where I want, if it comes too close to the grid, it snaps back in place, this is very annoying, can you truly go free form in how you position them? Thanks

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR 12 днів тому

      Hi there! You can position your screens as you want them in VR, then go into display settings on Windows to match the spatial configuration. For example, the left screen on the left, the right screen on the right, etc. whenever you open a new app, I don't know what the logic is for which screen the app appears on. That's a Windows thing. But once your app is open, you can drag it to whichever screen you like and it will stay there. For the positioning the screens as you describe, it sounds like you want to turn off SnapGrid from the main settings on the Immersed menu. When SnapGrid is turned off, you can position the screens anywhere you like.

      I don't have a dock for my Quest 3. I use the Bobo VR S3 head strap: www.bobovr.com/products/s3-pro So when not in use, I pop off the battery and plug it in. This is probably a showstopper for me. I have one power cable running to the monitor with an internal hub, and one USB-C from the laptop to the monitor. All the other peripherals I need are plugged into the monitor and I'll be damned if I buy another USB-C powered hub. Oh well,... I am about to rent Meta Quest 3 to see if I will like it for sim racing (Assetto Corsa). And after reading about other uses of VR came across Immersed. I was totaly excited about the upcoming Visor. But I suppose it will not happen. Anyway, there's possibly a way to patch the excutable; search for "Immersed - Multiple Physical Monitors Detected Patch (v13)". BTW, the magnetic USB-C cables are probably a bad idea. They do not conform to the USB-C standard, and may be responsible for damage to ports and equipment hosting these ports.

    Nah screw these guys at Immersed. I'm done with supporting them. They had a great concept that was seamless and easy to use and i was prepared to ignore the level of jank the app STILL had after this long and the basic QOL issues they still hadn't managed to fix..... but this change is too damned annoying to put up with. Renji is a moron. If their vision is a future free from locking people down then why did they create a problem for many that requires more physical hardware. Other apps out there allow you to have multiple physical monitors even if they don't virtualize them. It would have been easy for immersed to do the same. Then his point about this freeing up developer time. Again. Other apps have figured this out. How incompetent or under resourced is his team? What else are they struggling with. Given that there are still countless QOL issues that still exist despite people flagging them for years now its clear they are struggling but why? How are they going to even support thier Vizor if basic support to ignore multiple monitors built into the app was causing enough of a concern for Renji to just scrap it lol. Seriously. This change has annoyed me enough to stop using the app and discard any interest in the visor. If they are willing to make a change as disruptive as this without providing a sensible solution then who knows what else they will mess up. I've moved over to using the latest Beta of Virtual Desktop which offers multiple virtual screens and doesn't freak out if you have multiple physical monitors (so no idea why the geniuses at Immersed couldn't figure out how to make their app work regardless of how many physical monitors you have) I was all in on Immersed and was using it pretty frequently. I was also eying up their visor. Virtual monitors are the future as far as i'm concerned but Immersed has just dropped out of the race.

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR 3 місяці тому

      I'm sorry you feel that way. I understand your frustration. I really do. Often, this is the price of being an early adopter of bleeding edge technology. However, I don't think it's necessary to insult Renji and the team. If you want to give up on them and their product, I completely understand. But insults are unnecessary. I've tried using Virtual Desktop as well, but I struggled to figure out how to get it to deal with my IRL screens. Even if it ignores them and I spawn new virtual screens, it seemed like apps on the IRL monitors were inaccessible. But I probably just need to play with it some more. I've messed with Remote Display. It works well, but is only one screen. Horizon Workrooms seems to handle my IRL monitors flawlessly, so I've been working in there a lot as well. Personally, I'm not giving up on Immersed, but I understand your frustration. Hang in there! All this technology will continue to get better!

      Hi there - the only way Immersed allows you to move screens around and resize them together as a group is if you use their SnapGrid feature. Personally, I don't use that because I like the more fine-tuned, granular control of moving the screens independently. But if you want to move them together, you have to put them in the SnapGrid.

    Erh, no. Simply no. I'm glad you could find a workaround that is solving the issue for you personally, but with this update, the devs effectively bricked the software to people with multiple displays setups that are mounted or not easily accessible because they couldn't be bothered to figure out the software they sell. In a nutshell they dumped their inability to deal with a software issue, to the lap of the customer and made it a you-problem. I admire your patience and willingness to deal with it. :D

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR 3 місяці тому

      I feel ya. This is a frustrating change for me too. They definitely made it a "you-problem" for sure. It sucks, and I totally understand if many users migrate away from Immersed because of this. I'll stick with them, but I don't like it. 😕

    • @thegwolf

      @@WorkInVR I respect your position, and it is a perfectly valid approach. For me personally however, that doesn't work. I bought Immersed back in 2022, for occasional use. However, with the exception of one case each time when I would have needed to use it in a hurry, it needed an update to function or an update caused some complication and each time I had to spend hours if not days jumping through hoops. For me as end user of an utility software, the way immersed is operating is unpredictable and unreliable. The few times I managed to use it, didn't worth the time, effort nor the cost. It is 2024, it shouldn't be the customer's job to find workarounds for issues created by the developers. If they are under funded or under staffed, that is a management problem, which is again, shouldn't be a problem for the customer to handle and it is hardly reason enough to be left with an essentially bricked software. They should dial back ambition, and figure things out in house to provide a stable product before aiming for higher ground.

    7:15 - I understand Renji's hard choice he had to make, and I still love Immersed; but I'm shocked at how much friction this approach caused for so many users. If the displays were simply ignored, I could buy the "future free from locking down to physical workstations" thing. But right now, it feels like I'm in a Tesla driving up to a non-Tesla charger and my charging port stays locked because of that, or something. I don't expect them to engineer around my specific use case, but I honestly feel like I'm being pushed toward Workrooms (imo a slightly inferior product) due to now having to essentially disconnect my charging source to initiate an app. I run a MBP in a vertical stand to save on space, which means my two external monitors (plugged directly via USB-C) are my power source _and_ my default screen. So to get Immersed going, I'd have to run headless, hope my laptop doesn't immediately go to sleep, run on battery until either my MBP dies or my Q3 dies (certainly not a workday's worth of time in either case), then reach through my workspace to reconnect everything to get going again afterward. Or, I can have a max of 3 monitors that have fixed display ratios and slightly worse audio and simply treat the software like software. I don't know... It now kind of sucks either way.

    As far as I remember, Immersed doesn't have display emulation available on Linux, only mirroring physical displays. Does that mean that now, on Linux, it is physically impossible to have more than one screen in Immersed? And yes, despite all the valid arguments, I personally find this decision very stupid and Windows- or Apple-like when they just decide that a certain feature is not needed anymore and just block it out. That is certainly not what they've ben asked to do: the community asked to give a choice between using physical screens or not - and they just chose themselves. More to say, sometimes it can make sense mirroring physical monitors - for example if you'd like to show something to someone approaching you IRL. Like, my wife wants me to show her the latest utility bill - so now I'll have to disconnect the headset, plig in the displays, show whatever I need and then do vice versa - makes no sense, really

      @WorkInVR 4 місяці тому

      For Linux, there are no virtual screens in Immersed, but you can still have as many physical screens as you like (i.e. primary Linux laptop + two IRL physical monitors == 3 screens in Immersed). It's only Windows and Mac that can no longer bring in physical monitors. And I totally agree with your example of showing your wife something. This *exact* thing happened to me today. It was super annoying. 😞

    Very weird decision. If it is really about engineers they could just disable external monitors and add an ability to choose which one you want to see in VR. It is not a technical restriction at all. I have a daisy chaining DP connection, meaning, my second monitor is connected directly to the first one, I don't have any hubs. Working with physical monitors allows you to jump between VR and real. You can exit Immersed anytime and continue working on the same monitors with the same windows open on the same position as in VR. Moreover, physical monitors always were more performant for me than virtual ones. Virtual monitor sometimes have glitches, super high latency and etc. while physical monitor in VR just worked.

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR 4 місяці тому

      I agree to all! Immersed is saying that it is a technical restriction. Many, like you, have thought that to be a poor reason. Even my work around is less than ideal as it will clump all apps onto a single screen when switching, forcing you to reposition everything once your virtual screens are up. This makes switching between VR and real more difficult. 😞

  • @SplitGuy-yj4ct

    The CEO said that he can't allow this feature because people would enable it and then experience a performance hit, so they removed it entirely. It's quite a wild take from someone who tries to sell hardware to the same user group. Also, he mentioned that those of us who experience problems represent just 5% of users, which amounts to only 50,000 users. But I think that 50,000 sales of a visor would not be considered a flop... I don't know. It's just weird. Why did they give us this option in the first place? I spend so much money on hardware (Quest 3, a router to reduce latency, power supplies, lens inserts, etc.) to make this free app work, and I am tired of losing functionality and seeing no measurable improvements in quality or latency. The worst part is, I was editing videos just fine one day, and then the next day, while troubleshooting, I received a response saying it was my fault for not keeping up with announcements from Immersed. I use it as a productivity app to be more productive, not to read through every piece of news that comes out. Imagine if Microsoft suddenly supported only displaying one Word page on the screen. I think that would be a productivity hit. I’m not saying that it's easy to develop such software, but they could at least give me the option to use an older version, enable features at my own risk, or let me pay for it. Sending a sneaky disable to previous versions to force an update... I don’t know. That just doesn’t sit right with me.

    So I'm confused, can Immersed have multiple monitors on one PC anymore? I needed to have dummy HDMI dongles on my graphics cards so I could have multiple monitors on a single PC. I don't have multiple monitors in my physical space anyway but in immersed I'd have at last two on the computer that was tethered to my headset.

    • @WorkInVR
      @WorkInVR 4 місяці тому

      With this new update, you cannot have any extra physical monitors IRL. So, if your computer or laptop just has one single primary screen, then you can now connect to Immersed. Once you're in Immersed, you can spawn up to 4 virtual screens, bringing your total of possible screens in Immersed up to 5. The problem comes when you have extra physical monitors IRL. That is what they are now disallowing. So, if you have extra/additional physical monitors IRL, you now have to disconnect them before you're allowed to connect to your computer in Immersed.

    Good video and nice work around for a laptop. For desktops, if your graphics card supports it, you can set your monitors to span or surround and behave as a single display. After the interactions we had with the CEO in discord yesterday, and a bunch of us getting banned, I have a lot less confidence in this companying going forward. Despite the vision, Immersed is still an office productivity suite. One whose CEO came on discord and told his target customer set that they aren't worth his development team's time to support. What is telling is that the general desktop population is almost 15% multi-monitor set-up, laptops are just under 5% multi-monitor. I'm sure that percentage goes up when you look specifically at home and corporate offices. The Immersed CEO said multiple monitor set-ups were only 5% of their over-all user set, which means they are getting poor adoption from their target customer set, probably because the software, five years after release, is still clunky and requires fiddling with to get working (sometimes actually requires a Meta Developer account and using a third-party tool to clear out some specific Meta app data settings). Basically, their target customer, the ones who will use the app daily as a productivity tool and buy the in-app QoL features are not staying with the app because it simply consumes too much time troubleshooting.

However, I rarely get a perceivable difference in lag between the two. Since I like to keep my headset tethered for constant power, it was very easy for me to simply plug into the USB-C dock instead of plugging into a power brick. Yes, the way I have mine set up is that the forehead piece of the S3 touches the facial interface. I put the back piece of the S3 as low as possible, keeping the "halo" portion of the S3 as round and flat as possible. I've seen a lot of people "bend the halo" and have the back piece of the S3 up high on the back of their head. I think that is much less comfortable. I loosen the halo and flatten it out, pushing the back of the S3 back as low as possible. I typically wear a fitted ballcap on backwards as well, so the back of the S3 touches the brim of the cap. Then, I tighten the halo so it's nice and snug (but not so tight that it's uncomfortable). I've found this to be very comfortable for all day use. It's stable and lets the headset "float" perfectly in front of my eyes. Hopefully this helps you!

      I have not tried the Apple Vision Pro. However, I have several friends who have them. They love them, but they are super expensive. Also, Immersed has not been released on the AVP yet. For productive work in VR, and for a fraction of the price of the AVP, I would highly recommend the Quest 3.
