I've been tying trout flies for 20 years with big streamers thrown in on occasion. I've been intrigued by the fishery down in the Biloxi Marsh and watched your video where you caught your, at the time, personal best 38 pound red fish, on the plantation crab. I then searched for a tyinging video, and lo and behold, there you were giving the instructions. I found this to be one of the best step by step video's I've ever watched, and I've watched a lot. Down to the instructions of rubber banding the fiber bundles. My materials arrived from Mad River on Saturday, and I just finished a half dozen of these patterns. The first might go into the cutout bin, but the others are going right into the box, and it's a credit to your video. Next up, planning an actual trip to get down there!

One of the best instructional tying videos I have seen, calm unassuming approach with every step and bit of info provided, nice job Brian! 10/10 (no I have no affiliation and could only hope to fish with a guy like this in the future.

Awesome fly! I flipped the tail so the green is opposite and added a weighted mono keel with tungsten beads to help the fly ride hook point up but to each his own!

For redfish, he doesn't want the hook to ride up.....just to be clear on that. He tied it this way on purpose. But you are right...to each is own. Thanks.

I’d like the hook to ride up too. Maybe hook down is good for sight fishing but to bump it along the bottom of a flat you definitely want the hook up and a weed guard.
It looks like an awesome fly for sure. I’ll be tying some up in different colour variations while I ride out this hurricane. I’ll comment again soon to let you know how they work.

A few folks have pointed out that this fly is “upside down” and that the eyes will cause it to ride with hook up, which would put the olive marabou under and the grey fox on top. That’s what we originally thought too but it’s not the case. The width of the fly, combined with the density of the EP fibers prevents it from flipping as you’d expect. The original pattern did have the olive marabou tied in first but Brian changed this once he figured this out. The fly rides hook down and eyes up, therefore the tail shows properly with light underside and dark on top.
We’ll have Brian address and explain in a future video.

Thankyou mate for an imformative and engaging fly tying tuturial. Im sure there are many Australian fish species that will be jumping all over it! I was wondering about the 5 thumbs down reactions to this video? Are the people trolls or halfwits or cretins or all of the above? I honestly dont get how anyone would take issue with any of your vids for that matter!Kind of makes me loose faith in democracy and free speech when you get twits disliking a video like this where you are obviously trying to help people tie a fly and be a better flyfisher! Absolute half pie gooses!

Thanks for watching. Don't worry about it though.....haters make us famous. They are always there and most likely competitors.

thx, i live in ny and tie for the Long Island to New England species but also tie for my nephew in northern fla and he's just starting up a guiding business there...the young man is one of those few born to be fishy almost like a fish whisperer or perhaps was a fish in an earlier life...anyway, thx again for the vid, look forward to banging out a few for him to throw at the reds in his hood...Pete L. I agree that the Dr. Slick Synthetic Scissors are dandy all-purpose/heavier-duty tying scissors. (this is not a paid or otherwise compensated plug)

Do you ever tie these in 4s and 6s for bone fish? Or heard of anybody who does? Probably the coolest looking crab pattern I've seen.

Thanks for watching. Haven't heard of that but you could certainly try? You might give a call or an e-mail to Brian at the shop and he may know otherwise as he fishes bonefish a ton.

So do you not crimp the barb and just leave that up to the customer? That's a cool looking fly!
