41) I'm more ashamed of my french half this year than I was of my spanish half in 2017. We were promised an amazing entry, a top3 contender, and we get a swedish hand-me-down that didn't take more than 5 good minutes to write. The instrumental is bland and has been done more times than a supercomputer could count, the lyrics are absolutely atrocious (the french ones too), the song goes nowhere and has no reason to exist. It's the definition of filler, mediocre, and bland. The only good thing about this is his voice, but if Croatia's last place in my top last year tells you anything, it's that I consider that a good voice can't save a shit song.
40) Very similar to my 41st; dated instrumental, shit lyrics. The only reason it's slightly better is that there's at least a semblance of a hook that is in fact catchy. Is it good? No. But I can remember this chorus after 1 listen, which is more than can be said for the entry below this. I do think it will qualify thanks to the older voters.
39) This is the year of terrible lyrics isn't it. This song is trying to be both modern and some sort of tango/salsa, and fails at being either. The instrumentation sounds cheap, his higher register is unpleasant to me, and then the lyrics just solidify this as my 39th. It's not outright bad (I won't skip it), but it's far from good.
38) Now we're getting into songs I can say good things about. This song suffers from being unremarkable, in a similar way to Inje back in 2018 (but Inje still had a lot more going on). When I'm listening to it I think "yeah this is alright", but I can barely remember anything about it other than the beginning of the chorus just after finishing. It doesn't take any risks, but playing it safe can turn out to be a risk in and of itself.
37) This song is close to guilty pleasure territory, but the "uh na na" and general lyrics just can't let me enjoy it, even ironically. The drop isn't my thing at all, even if I got used to it after hearing it a bunch. I'll admit it is very catchy. The semi final allocation, Greece's recent history with staging, and young performer combo make me think this won't qualify though.
36) Another horrendous drop (worst I've heard in a LONG time), but honestly I kinda love the verses to this. It admits how ridiculous it is and owns it, I can respect it for that. My ears won't let me put this song higher though, but I appreciate that it knows what it's going for and executes it well. Also a great live performance.
35) There could've been an interesting path with all the water sounds, but then the song just goes back to the standard power ballad instrumentation with notes so long you could use them to hard-boil an egg. Is she impressive? Absolutely. Does the song do anything that makes me want to listen to it? Not really. It's probably going to get the #2 spot in the first semi
34) It's well produced, and he sells it pretty well. But I just can't enjoy the mhmhmhmmhmhmh that substitutes the chorus. I've heard this same instrumentation in plenty of other songs, and never liked it much back then. It could've been way better if it wasn't so generic.
33) Slick and groovy. I'm confident he'll perform it well. What I don't like are all the distracting vocal acrobaties, the subpar lyrics, and how empty the song feels at times (especially in the oh oh part before the chorus). Once again a decent song that could've been something great if more work was put into it and they avoided all the cheap "sticks and stones may break my bones" stuff.
32) Basically the exact opposite of Austria except for the lyrics also being awful. The instrumental is very promising and he has the power to not get overshadowed by it (not everyone would be able to!), but then the whole gimmick around country stereotypes is just... cringy, for lack of a better word. It's a shame, because the message and concept are actually quite good, but terribly executed. Even then, I would have the song at least in my qualifiers if it didn't have that group of backing vocalists screaming ICH LIEBE DIIIIICH and completely destroying any chance of me seeing this as a serious entry.
31) Yeah here's an actual guilty pleasure. The verses are awesome, but the chorus (as catchy as it is) really brings the song down. Even then it's something I can enjoy quite a bit. I haven't looked up the lyrics translation, and it's probably a good thing lol
30) Why did you have to add that guitar... It ruins everything the song had going for it; being fresh, energetic, stripped-back. Now it's just a mush of sounds that haven't been mixed properly. At least Benny is a good enough performer to still give the song enough attitude to stand out, and it's retained a lot of its catchiness.
29) Quite a solid entry and a welcome surprise from RTVE. It sounds professional. The pre-chorus in particular is great, and he is a very capable performer. Buuuut; that chorus. The instrumental is weak compared to what was built up leading to it, the lyrics are hot garbage, and it generally ruins the rest of the song when it needed to be the biggest jewel on the crown. It's a recurring trend this year to have a decent concept that gets botched and leaves you wishing for so much more than you got.
28) The Bond song of the year, and quite a good song. What turns me off is how chaotic it gets with the horns in the second chorus and her vocal gymnastics, especially at the end. It feels like her voice is fighting the melody instead of the two working together. I guess it fits the theme of the song, but it comes off as messy.
27) Cute song. That's all I can say. It's pleasant to listen to, but it does nothing to stand out. Portuguese ballads like Amar Pelos Dois or O Jardim had something special, they were my 3rd and my 1st for a reason. O Jardim in particular maybe wasn't innovative, but Claudia more than made up for it with her extremely heartfelt delivery. Elisa doesn't get that across, which makes the entire song fall flat. In the end, it's a pretty basic song, and even if I usually love the genre and Portugal it barely makes my top10 in the weakest semi-final in a long time.
26) Very artsy song. I appreciate the risk taken. Thing is, the song takes such a long time to build up that it loses my interest after a minute and a half. It's a song to play in the background, not one that will stand up and gather attention on a big stage when it's up against 25 other songs.
25) Another guilty pleasure. San Marino really revived the entire disco genre and I'm absolutely here for it. It helps that I always take their entries somewhat ironically, but honestly this song is quite decent even down to the production. I'm confident this can qualify.
24) A revamp that didn't ruin the song, but made it lose a lot. I was never a huge fan of Shaj, but what I did love were the violins. That (and the language lol) told you "hey, THIS IS ALBANIA". This one is just, eh. It's solid by all means, but it lacks identity and won't stand out. At the very least it doesn't stand out to me. Albania, you shouldn't try to be something you're not.
23) A really positive surprise. A solid song (with a good drop!!!), in their native language, with a good performance. Everything is really solid. It's a shame it's in the strongest semi, because this would be a great addition to the final.
22) Good quality song. She's a very capable singer and performer, and the live will likely be much better than last year's. My main issue is how predictable it is, I wish they tried some new stuff with this type of gospel-pop. This and Sweden might cancel each other off in the jury vote, depending on how they perform, and neither song benefits from that.
21) Everything about this song is something I would theoretically hate. But after finding myself humming it all day and actually going out of my way to play it, I feel like I should at least put it top25. The revamp REALLY brought it up, and especially the rap and the final breakdown are enjoyable as hell. I think the NQ streak is over.
20) Tonto el que no entienda, cuenta una leyenda, que una hembra gitana, conjuro a la luna hasta el amanecer Moldova's serious entries are usually bland, but the (stolen) synth melody in this one really saves it for me. It's convincing, it doesn't seem overdramatic even if it's a single big note away from seeming ridiculous. Overall quite enjoyable.
19) Good thing I love this chorus because they seem to have based the song entirely around it. It's extremely enjoyable and I haven't gotten tired of it yet, so I certainly hope this does well. When the Netherlands don't send country, you can count on Denmark to keep the trend going.
18) This ticks all the boxes of "generic sounding ballad that I would dislike", but she performs it with such conviction that it's impossible to dismiss it. Basically a safe song that knows what it's going for and executes everything it does perfectly. Maybe not innovative, but it's certainly a very high quality entry with a memorable hook.
17) Oh fuck yes. After so many years of sending stuff that sounded "eurovision friendly" and consistently getting bad results, the UK finally sends something that sounds like it came right out of the 2nd biggest music industry in the world. It's not the genre of music I listen to or enjoy much, but it's a credible entry I'll gladly listen to, and that hopefully won't be underrated.
16) I can't believe this is actually a russian entry, but here we are. I never liked Little Big much, they're an interesting band but they're very tiring to listen to. This one is a bit more accessible, but still quite grating. If I don't listen to it too much, I know I'll love it in May, so I just need to make sure not to overplay it until then. I'm very glad Russia is finally taking risks.
15) Ignoring the bad pun and unironic use of "fake news", the song has a very special feeling to it. It's a real shame they pull out the big eurovision notes at the end to completely ruin the intimacy and fragility it had built up for 2 minutes. It's still good, but it lost a lot with that revamp (unpopular opinion, I know).
14) A song that sounds genuine! It's been since 2016 that we haven't had one of those from Sweden. Extremely enjoyable and catchy. Only issue is, there's not much going on on stage, and the actual song isn't strong enough to compensate or stripped back enough to justify it. I still think it's a top10, but maybe not a top5. Anyway Dotter massively robbed and I'm still sad.
13) I love this style of song that tells a historical story (Ra Ra Rasputin, Dschingis Khan) even if it relies on the listener not knowing anything about Ancient Egypt, japanese buddhist chants or Azerbaijan and just assuming everything east of Germany is a uniform mesh of spices and warm weather. Anyway it's an absolute banger I will gladly turn my brain off to listen to, and bonus points for the rolled rrrrr.
12) Australia's best entry for me! It's genuine, it's fragile, still catchy and memorable, and the performance will likely be much better in May than here (just see Zero Gravity for reference). The verses remind me too much of Broken by Isak Danielson but that's a song I love so it just gets bonus points. Also can we appreciate the performance taken entirely in one shot, it's vital to keeping that sense of fragility the song needs. Her voice is also a perfect fit, it sounds exactly like it's about to break at any point. She knows how to transmit, and others could really use a lesson from her.
11) Extremely underrated by the fandom. Nostalgic, well produced, well sung in a heartfelt performance. If there wasn't salt from the NF and Aksel was a conveniently good-looking guy, this would be way higher in the average top I SAID WHAT I SAID
10) Just a wonderful song I can lose myself in and completely enjoy. Probably the best composition of the year, and Luca's voice compliments it so well. I don't think it'll stand out enough to qualify unfortunately, but that won't stop me from enjoying the song just like I enjoyed their music before they were even announced as participating. My main complaint is the laziness in the lyrics, surely you could've thought of more than a handful of sentences to repeat over and over again.
9) It's a miracle this song even works when it alternates between afrobeat, radio pop and middle eastern sounds so much. Huge props to Eden and the songwriters for being able to pull this off so well. It's extremely enjoyable, and shows a unique culture blend that isn't well-known even in its two countries. Hats off, and yay for the first eurovision song in Amharic!
8) So with the decade ending and all that, I spent most of December and January looking back at the early 2010s and their songs, and then came this song to throw me right back in there. I love every second of this, and even if I don't fancy its chances of qualifying it's still an absolute banger.
7) This sounds underwhelming when you're listening until you realise you know both the lyrics and the choreography after watching it just a couple times. It's insane how much of an earworm it is. Extremely enjoyable performance too. Also, the lyrics are adorable, and I especially love the line "three birds of a feather". Is it weird to say that this song makes me want to be a parent? Who cares, I'll say it anyway.
6) The pop banger of the year absolutely nobody expected. Catchy as hell, the instrumentation and lyrics aren't even basic, and his unique voice really distinguishes it from the competition. If the performance is good, I could even see this in the top5.
5) If I had to bet on who would win, this would be my pick. I knew Gjon's Tears from The Voice France, and his voice is even better live than in studio, which just adds to the perfect blend of stripped-back and intense that is the instrumental. This is going to be a huge moment in the arena. The lyrics are beautiful and a new take on the suffering of immigrants. Not a feeling of pity, not a feel-good story, but an outright desperate plea for help, from people who refuse to give a hand out of egoism. This song simply gives me chills.
4) Is it a Billie rip off? Yes. Do I still love it? You bet I do. So soothing and enjoyable, and it very much holds its own against the likes of when the party's over or ocean eyes (unlike Storm last year). Yet another song that gives me chills, yet still makes me completely relax.
3) I don't know what it is about this. It's just so heartfelt and genuine that it completely gets to me. It's almost overwhelming, but doesn't go so far as to be aggressive. The piano break is one of the most beautiful things I have heard in a eurovision entry, and I sincerely hope they don't remove it when cutting it down to three minutes, because that part is what made it my 3rd and not just my 5th.
2) Some good indie pop in esc, fuck yeah. I have so much appreciation for songs that seem silly or happy on the surface but have a much deeper message under that, and a surprisingly dark instrumentation (e.g. Lemon Tree). My single complaint is the easy rhymes of fire/higher/desire, which is the only thing keeping this away from a 10/10. I also can't forget the memorable performance that all of Europe is going to be imitating for an evening.
1) The absolute perfect example of the ethnopop I wish more countries had the guts to send. I'm really into electronic and folk, and when combined well it can result in absolute gems like this song. I just love everything about this. I love white voice (they honestly have some similarities with some voices in Iberia that I grew up listening to), the flute melody that carries the song throughout could not have been done better, the percussions are spot on, the chorus hook is incredibly infectious, the lyrics telling a folk story are something I can hugely respect, and it's the first time we hear ukrainian since 2009(russia's entry), and before that 2005. It's also performed splendidly and uses culturally appropriate imagery. For this year, I am firmly rooting for Go_A and Solovey. Good luck in Rotterdam!
Greece could definitely qualify, if they NQ I expect it to be 11th or 12th Latvia I think will do the same as Line in 2017, and end up in the bottom 5 of the semi. It has a lot of fans among the esc community, but it's too weird to have mainstream appeal (especially for juries). Just look at what happened to telemoveis.
Thanks from Finland 😍 Finally some appreciation for Aksel. People just keep hating it because Erika didn't win... You deserve more likes anyway!

here we go
41) I'm more ashamed of my french half this year than I was of my spanish half in 2017.
20) Tonto el que no entienda, cuenta una leyenda, que una hembra gitana, conjuro a la luna hasta el amanecer
Moldova's serious entries are usually bland, but the (stolen) synth melody in this one really saves it for me.
Greece will qualify easily ❤️❤️❤️😍😍😍🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷
1 spain ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Eso mismo le digo sr perez
Neither Greece nor Latvia is a predicted qualifier.... That's a joke
Greece could definitely qualify, if they NQ I expect it to be 11th or 12th
Latvia I think will do the same as Line in 2017, and end up in the bottom 5 of the semi. It has a lot of fans among the esc community, but it's too weird to have mainstream appeal (especially for juries). Just look at what happened to telemoveis.
