  • I recently added a new CBN wheel to my TAS scissor sharpener. I no longer need the messy white aluminum oxide stones. It also runs cooler and I can use Wonder Slick Stick on it. This isn’t a stock item I had to special order it but it ,but it was really reasonable it was right around $100 and took about 6 weeks to come in.
    To order a CBN Wheel go here but you will need to call them woodturnerswonders.com/
    They have all the specs from my oreder.

    Thanks for the videos, can the ookami gold twice as sharp do everything an expensive flat hone can do? Would a guy need both machines? Thx

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  Рік тому

      So a flat hones advantage is most also do Clipper Blades and are the best thing for clipper blades, but they can also do knives and scissors probably lots of other things as well. I am not an expert on flat hone machines as I do not own one (Yet lol) I have not gone after the clipper blade market, but many sharpeners do and some only do clippers. If you have a lot of animal groomers in your area it can be lucrative. In the last two years I. have only had a few request for clippers, so I have not considered a flat hone, but they are amazing sharpening machines. If you don't think you will do clippers or have few request I would get a Twice As Sharp they do a lot as well I have done garden tools and lawn blades and all kinds of scissors. So it's just one of those things were sharpeners have multiple options of gear both are good, but do different things and some of the same things. Since I have had so few request for clippers the flat hone for me seemed like it would not pay off because like you said they are very exspensive 2K-6K range.

    I'm gonna go broke watching your videos...lol. The other week you convinced me to get CBN wheels for my TORMEK, now I think I need the CBN for my TAS. After using the CBN on your TAS for a few months now, would go with a different grit?

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  Рік тому

      No I like the 380 it’s perfect for everyday scissors or ones that need a good bit of grinding I would not change it. I have added a lot of new gear but it’s because of demand so fortunately being crazy busy has afforded me the cash available to get more gear. My recommendation is if starting up new try to add things that you know will help grow your business for me at first it was speed. what can make my sharpening faster. Then second was what can help me offer a wide variety of items. I hate doing lawn mowing blades and gardening gear but so often they come back with knives. Don’t feel like you have to get everything immediately add it as your business grows and for what your particular clients needs are and what will give you a financial return or increase in customers.

    Hi Paul. How do you feel about utilizing the Tormek for sewing shears? If you had to sharpen this type of shears on a Tormek, would you go with the Tormek SG-250 wet or perhaps one of your CBN wheels (which grit? Dry?). Thanks!

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  11 днів тому

      I don't like it for scissors I use Twice As Sharp Machines for scissors. I would only use it for household scissors. I don't like the way it does them and it chatters like crazy and makes crazy noises.So Yes it can sharpen scissors but it's not enjoyable and a pain to set up. I would not do fabric scissors on the Tormek The very first machine I added after knives was doing scissor I even have two machines one is for saloon sheers and the other is for everything else my TAS for regular scissors has a 350 CBN the salon sheers I have a 800 Diamond wheel

      @PatrickBesanson 11 днів тому

      @@ALXSHARPEN Copy that! I’ve watched almost all your videos and had my eye on the Twice as Sharp set up you run. Great to know the grits on your two wheels. I had not seen you do any scissors on your Tormek so I figured that there was some drawbacks.
      Can you advise where you got your diamond wheel for salon shears?

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  11 днів тому +1

      @@PatrickBesanson my one CBN wheel came from WoodTurners Wonders they actually made it for me and after getting numerous requests for it now stock it their link in on my UA-cam links on my UA-cam home page at the Top my diamond wheel came from wolf industry the maker of the Twice As Sharp. TAS machines are so well made the last forever I purchased one new and one from eBay used and my used one is probably 50 years old or close to it and it runs just as good so don’t be afraid of used ones they are fantastic Machines and have never hear anyone having and issues with one I got my second one for $200 so a big savings my other one was $700 it’s an OOKAMI Gold version the training videos that come with it are very good if you want to do salons sheers it’s a must have unless you can afford a flat hone they are very expensive but the very best machine for scissors mostly the guys I know who have them only do or mostly do salon and Barber shops so for them it’s worth it but for me I do mostly knives and some scissors so the TAS is good enough for me. I have plenty of TAS videos

    Is it necessary to have separate scissor sharpening system? Doesn't tormek do most everything?
    My grandfather was a tool and die machinist and used to just sharpen shears on bench grinder by hand... And they were sharp!?

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  Рік тому +2

      Is it necessary - No ,is it very helpful yes because it’s not an easy wheel change on a TAS machine to just swap out so I have a machine set up for Barber Sheers and another set up for more standard scissors. Yes you can do scissors on a Tormek again it’s not as good IMO as the TAS and for me with a business I don’t have time to be taking machines apart to change wheels.

    • @sharpenrightservicesllc
      @sharpenrightservicesllc Рік тому +1

      I used the Tormek for several years. It sharpens a lot of things really well. It is just slow. The TAS is worth every penny if you sharpen a lot of scissors. It paid for itself in less than a month. I still use my Tormek from time to time. It's just too slow for a sharpening business.

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  Рік тому

      Necessary no but there are far better faster and easier ways like Wolf Twice as Sharp never been a fan of Tormek for scissors if your doing your own stuff then it’s totally good to go. I have a full time sharpening business and also to hair and barber sheers which you should never do on a Tormek

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  Рік тому

      @@sharpenrightservicesllc agree my TAS is awesome and my second one I purchased used for just $100 bucks and they have both paid for themselves. If you sharpen multiple things like I do remember some equipment may not give you an immediate return on investment but many of my scissors customers and garden tools have returned with knives and vise versa. I do lawn blades I am sure I haven’t paid off the equipment yet in lawn blades sharpened but many of the guy’s who came in have come back with knives.

    • @ALXSHARPEN
      @ALXSHARPEN  Рік тому

      @@sharpenrightservicesllc There are ways to speed up sharpening on the Tormek using CBN is one that can help a lot .I use two Tormeks one with 200 CBN and one with 1000 CBN with two I can sharpen a Knife in around 6-7 min. Even if you only have one Tormek but have two wheels is great because changing a CBN wheel on the Tormek T8 only takes about 15-20 seconds because you can use them without water. The standard Tormek Stone is very slow and sadly makes many sharpeners think they cant use it professionally. That is definitely not the case. CBN is fast, runs cool and for the price of one Tormek diamond stone that has two run in water and get water treatment added (an addition cost) you can buy to Spartan CBN Wheels from Wood Turners Wonders and your time savings will be significant.
