    Hey Ivan, I just wanted to say that your video was so crystal clear, without confusion, and direct that it is truly astonishing I was able to find a tutorial as concise as this on UA-cam. Thank you for all that you do and for how well you do it. You truly have a talent for this and I hope you continue to make these videos for as long as you feel comfortable. Glad it's helpful. You know, I had Toast Titanium, but not Pro. I just bought it to see how they compare and it looks totally different. It's like Toast 20 Pro is a collection of apps and not a sort of all-in-one app like Titanium.
      I'll give it a few days, but if it's all I see here, I'll probably return it.

    Do you have a tutorial that covers more than these basics and is specifically for authoring a Blu-Ray Disc.I'm having lots of issues that are not addressed here, for starters, dropping either an H.264 .M4V and the separate audio .WAV file and the separate closed caption .SRT files does not work, nor does using a MPEG-2 Blu-Ray .M2V file.

    • @HeyIvan

      You know, I'm not sure that Toast is the right tool for you. I spoke with the folks who make Toast a few weeks ago when someone asked me about how they can author discs with multiple language files. During my conversation with Roxio I learned that it doesn't support multi-language discs. If you wanted to make a disc that has a video in English and another language, you'd need to burn two separate clips, which is unfortunate.
      I have not found support for .SRT files either. I'm keeping my eyes open for another Mac solution, but there don't really seem to be many options.
      Toast, in my opinion, is for authoring small, personal projects to memorialize mini projects. It's not a professional-grade authoring solution.
      Have you used any other DVD burning apps? I'm exploring options as I find them.

    Super helpful! Question: How do you add chapters to a video? I'm making a movie DVD and I don't want to break up the one video file into multiple video files as chapters. I just want to use the one main video file and then use chapters to jump to the various sections.

    • @HeyIvan
      @HeyIvan  Рік тому

      Good question! Toast does have a chapters feature. After you drop your video into the menu system like I show in the video, you click it and then you’ll see a small bookmark icon in the lower right of the video thumbnail. Clicking on that takes you into the Chapters tab on the left and shows you a thumbnail of the video with play controls and a timeline scrubber.
      You can watch the video or position the playback head and then manually click to add a chapter. Or, you can opt to automatically create chapters every so many minutes and seconds later. Or, you can do both.

    Hi Ivan,
    Your video is extremely helpful, wondering if you can help me on just one thing - I am just about to burn a video onto a disc but it is saying 6.92 GB. How do I compress before burning?

    • @HeyIvan
      @HeyIvan  8 місяців тому

      You have a few choices. First, if you have a dual layer dvd drive, you could use a dual-layer disc to hold this video.
      Otherwise, you’ll need to re-encode the video. You can do that by using an app like iMovie, Davinchi Resolve, or Adobe Premiere to make a new video project with slightly reduced quality settings, which will translate to a smaller file size. Alternatively, you can use a dedicated re-encoding app to make a copy of the video with other quality settings chosen. For this, I use Apple’s Compressor, which is a one-time cost of $50 USD.
      Both iMovie or Davinci are essentially free, but there’s a bit of a learning curve.
      Let me know if any of this helps.

      I found a lively discussion on just this topic. Here's the link: discussions.apple.com/thread/4294880?sortBy=best
      Here's the answer I'm referring to from that page, authored by Scot Walker:
      1. Export out of FCP X with Share:Blu-ray and choose Hard Drive to render out a disc image.
      2. Fire up Toast and select Copy:Image File instead of Video:Blu-ray.
      3. Drag the image file from the Finder into Toast
      4. Burn it.
      It won't encode anything, it's simply making a disc out of your disc image. I've been doing this with my feature film and it looks great, IMHO. I think it's 25Mbps, about 20 gigs for 2 hours.
      ---
      I have not vetted the steps. I still need to get my hands on a Blu-ray burner before I'll be anything other than theoretical help on this topic.

    Hello Ivan, using Imovie (Ventura 13.5.2) I have created a two hour video, complete with titles, transitions and music. Can I simply drag/drop it into Media and burn it to a bluRay disc? Thanks

    • @HeyIvan
      @HeyIvan  9 місяців тому

      Hey, there. macOS doesn't have support for Blu-ray burning on its own. You need some sort of Blu-ray authoring software like Toast Pro or some other app. There's definitely more than one solution out there. So, you won't be able to just drag and drop your movie onto the media directly.
      Your first step would be to export your iMovie to a video file, like an MP4, M4V, or MOV file. Then, you take that file and use a Blu-ray authoring app like Toast or something else to set up the menu and so on. Finally, you click "burn" in your authoring app, insert your disc, and wait for it to burn.
      I hope this helps.

    Hi Ivan. Just discovered your helpful channel. I would like to create DVDs that have traditional buttons. The same kind that commercial DVDs have had for 30 years. What this means is, a button that says “Play Movie” and another that says “Chapter Menu.” Is there a way to do this? I have tried using two copies of the movie, one with chapters and one without. This is almost there. However, if someone selects to play the movie, there are no chapter breaks, therefore, the chapter buttons on the DVD player remote do not work. It seems very odd that this simple capability would be omitted, especially when it was part of iDVD, Adobe Premier elements, and other software products back from when people were more interested in creating media.

      From my experience, when you create Titles, Toast creates bookmarks to sections of your video, but it doesn't split the video into multiple parts. How long is your total video? If you break your video into multiple separate clips, you can add them as separate items in your disc, but they won't be stitched together as a continuous item.
      Please help me understand a bit better how your disc is organized.

    For some reason when I am creating a custom template and dragging it over to my project it shows as a completely white preview screen (no image of my template) and then when I preview the project, all it is is my background image I had used for my template and none of the menu buttons or anything else that was set up. Any ideas?

    • @HeyIvan
      @HeyIvan  6 місяців тому

      Hmm. That doesn't sound right. I take it that you're using the number of rows and columns to allow Toast to give you placeholders for each item in your project. Is that right? Here's a link to that part of the video: ua-cam.com/video/Ip9RUBqMuW4/v-deo.htmlsi=Dq7b_d9944ZKyGoz&t=200
      Are you manually adding the menu buttons and items you drop from the other template tools?
      I imagine you're doing things right, but I'm just asking to be sure. It SOUNDS like it might be the case that manual items are being added to the template, and yet they show nothing when you preview them. Perhaps they might be white squares on your template background. Of course, this seems unlikely to me, but I have to ask. :)

    • @FilmCollectorArchive

      @@HeyIvan I go into the template designer, and select my rows and columns. There are already buttons there. I move those around and pull in an image to use as the background and click "bring to back" on the dropdown in the right nav, so the thumbnails, buttons, etc are showing. I click "Export" and then "No" on saving the project file. I name it and then my template shows as an option under the "Theme" header. When I drag my new template over into a new project, it shows up as the white thumbnail. No idea where I'm going wrong. The preview of the template shows perfectly. But something is lost when dragging it into the project to use.

    Ivan,
    Thank you for the very prompt reply. Let me see if I can answer your questions.
    (a) How can I tell if I am using the latest 2023 version of Toast?
    (b) I am a Mac user, with 14.0 version OS and an iMac ProI
    (c) Yes the .NEF files are those Nikon RAW images
    (d) I have not attempted to copy the files into a DVD-video format
    (e) I am only interested in burning copies of my images to provide a longer term source of storage
    (f) I think I understand you notes about alternate formats, though converting all my images to TIFF would (I think) even create large image files
    (g) My images range in size from 22mg pixels to over 44mg pixels
    (h) What I don’t seem to grasp is the basic notion just how to create a data DVD in the first place. What or which screen command do I use?
    I hope this will better describe my situation.
    I am so thankful for your assistance,
    Bob

    • @HeyIvan

      Thanks for providing this clarifying information, Bob. It helps a lot.
      (a) The latest version of Toast is Toast 20. Open it, then click Help > Check for Updates.
      (b) Got it.
      (c) Got it.
      (d) Got it.
      (e1) I understand.
      (e2 disc lifespan) I found an article that spells out the different kinds of disc lifespans. Here's an article with a helpful table at the end. However, I wouldn't be surprised if you already know this. It's clear I need to work DVDs back into my backup strategy. www.canada.ca/en/conservation-institute/services/conservation-preservation-publications/canadian-conservation-institute-notes/longevity-recordable-cds-dvds.html
      (e3 hard drive lifespan) I found a similar article that spells out this info for different kinds of hard drives. www.enterprisestorageforum.com/hardware/life-expectancy-of-a-drive/
      (e4 RAID) I use a special type of hard drive that employs a form of RAID, which stands for redundant array of inexpensive disks. The one I have is made by Synology. This model allows me to take up to 6 hard drives and combine them together so they act as one large hard drive. Then, that data is spread over the disks in a redundant way to protect against the failure of any single drive. If any disk fails, I pop it out and pop in a new blank drive. The Synology redistributes the data across the new and existing disks, rebulding what was lost. Additionally, I take all that data and back it up with Backblaze, to an encrypted backup disk in the cloud. There are all sorts of RAID solutions. Because of my Synology, I don't worry so much about failing hard drives. Of course, Synology is just one brand. There are many out there.
      (f) You're right. The TIFF files will probably be larger, or at least the same size. The only advantage you gain is that the file type is not proprietary to Nikon and readable on any OS.
      (g) Got it.
      (h) There are basically two ways to do this. The first is to just make the data disc with macOS, which I'll describe below. The second is to use an app like Toast to make a data disc.
      Option 1 - macOS
      The Mac will let you create a data disc without any extra software. Insert a blank disc. An icon appears on the desktop with what looks like a nuclear symbol. Double-click that to open it in a Finder window. At this point, I'd open a new Finder window by pressing command-n. Then, in the second Finder window, browse to the files you want to put on the disc. Drag them across to the blank disc's window. When you're ready, click File > Burn to burn the disc. This disc will only be readable on a Mac. Here's an Apple article that describes the steps. (Let me know if you want me to make a video about how this is done.)
      support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/burn-cds-and-dvds-mchl8addfd95/mac
      Option 2 - Toast-like app
      Toast isn't the only app to let you make a data disc.
      In Toast, click Burn > Data Disc. Then choose whether it'll work on Mac only or Mac & PC. After that, I'd open a finder window and browse to the files you want to put on the disc. Drag them into the Toast window. When you're ready, click Burn.
      If you like, I can make a video that shows this, too. Just let me know.
      I hope this helps, Bob.
      I should mention that data discs work like flash drives or hard drives. When you insert a data disc in the Mac, it'll look like a CD icon. And, when you open it, you'll see a list of files, like the Finder normally shows.

    Hey Ivan,
    I'm currently working on putting a feature film I made onto a DVD using Roxio Toast. I created a customized menu with background art that I personally created. Unfortunately, there is no indication on which text I'm highlighting. I have the film and then the bloopers directly underneath. When I finished burning the disc, the text didn't highlight and I didn't know what I was about to click on. I'm sending a few copies out to family members and I think it would be confusing for them if they don't know what they're clicking on. Could you help me out with this?
    Also (and this is probably unfixable), I don't really want the thumbnails to show up on the main page - I'd rather just have the text, which indicates what video file it will redirect the user to. Again, it's probably not a fixable problem but I just thought I'd ask. Roxio customer service hasn't been very helpful.
    Thanks!

    • @HeyIvan
      @HeyIvan  6 місяців тому +1

      Hey, there. Thanks for the comment. It's questions like these that help me build on my understanding.
      1. HIGHLIGHTED TEXT. It looks like the highlighted color is black. I tried it a few times in different ways and that seems to be the case. If I watch closely, I can see black text (I noticed mostly when I changed the navigation button style) adopt a thin black border around the edges. I tested on my Mac by previewing the theme on my project and then by using the arrow keys on the keyboard to select various chapters.
      2. CHAPTERS. I worked around this limitation by adding the video twice, which is kind of a weak workaround if you ask me. So, I had a main menu copy with all the book marks and I added a submenu copy will all the chapters. Then, for the first video, I hovered on each chapter and clicked the "X" to remove them all. I also renamed the text above the thumbnail image. On the second copy of my video, I removed just the first chapter that goes to the "start." I left all the others in place. So, provided there's enough room on the DVD, this option could work for you.

    Thanks Ivan. I've been putting off purchasing this for a while since more in depth review hasn't been available and there are so many negative reviews. Now I can see it's just what I want without the hassle of having to return it. I also saw your video on adding chapters, thank you. Request: Would you say something about the quality of the output? I use an inexpensive app now for authoring. It's a bit clumsy but it works for me with one exception, the quality of the encoding/transcoding. It's noticeable inferior to even 720p. I'd like to see the video quality at least that of 1080p. Cheers!

    • @HeyIvan
      @HeyIvan  Рік тому +1

      Hey, there. Thanks for the comment.
      You're right, the quality of the process I showed creates a standard def DVD using the DVD Video format. It's 480p, which is inferior to 1080p or 4K. You'll notice quite a drop in quality when you use this format.
      Titanium Pro promises to let you create higher definition DVD videos in a different DVD format, AVCHD or BDMV, which is a Blu-ray format. These options appear in Toast Titanium, but they aren't available. Only the Pro app will let you create discs in those formats.
      Of course, the trade off is that not every DVD player can play AVCHD or BDMV discs. You'll find that the DVD player -- the hardware -- you have will dictate which formats will work for you.
      In the coming weeks I plat to acquire Titanium Pro and test out the other formats. So far, I've only dug into standard def.
      I hope this helps.

    With your DVD burning videos, what is the best software overall: including price, functionality, and ease of use?

    • @HeyIvan
      @HeyIvan  Рік тому +1

      Hey, Louis. Thanks for the comment!
      I've looked at Burn, Cisdem DVD Burner, Wondershare DVD Creator, and Toast Titanium 20.
      Based on price alone, Burn -- the free and open source option -- wins. It's free, simple, and purpose built. Not much to it. If you need more flexibility for creating your DVDs, then it'll be worth a look at the other three.
      Between Cisdem and Wondershare, I'd say Wondershare wins. It has more functionality than Cisdem and they cost about the same as one another. The downside is that they both have subscription pricing, so it'll cost you at least $40 per year to stay active.
      Toast is either a one-time $79 for Titanium or $99 for Pro. I'm a fan of the app and of the non-subscription pricing model. This has the most features and allows you to create your own template.
      So, if it were me spending my own money, I'd either go with Burn for free. Or, after some serious consideration, I'd go with one of the versions of Toast.

      Thanks, Casino Jack.
      Help me understand what you're interested in doing. Are you taking files you already have in digital form and trying to put them onto DVD? Or, are you trying to go the other way?
      To answer your question. You can do everything I describe, however, when you choose to burn, in Output Settings, select Disk Image. That will create a folder somewhere on your Mac.
      Then, you can use the DVD Player app on Mac to play it.
      Although, there are other ways to do what you're describing.
      For example, if I just wanted a digital file and not a DVD, I might use iMovie or Final Cut to edit together the clips I want and then use either of those apps to export an MP4 or MOV file.

    • @HeyIvan
      @HeyIvan  Рік тому

      Thank you for providing the additional context. That helps me a lot.
      The primary purpose of Roxio Toast is to take files that you have in digital form and place them onto physical DVD discs, which can be played back in DVD players.
      If you already have the files in digital form, like as MOV, MKV, or MP4 formats then you don't need to use an app like Toast.
      If you have videos on a DVD disc and you're trying to bring those from the disc onto your computer as a digital file, then you'd need a different sort of app, a DVD ripping app.
      With all that said, if you have video files, but want to edit them together a bit differently, then an app like iMovie, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve will let you do that and then output a new video file with your edits in place.
      Please let me know if this helps at all. I'm happy to make a video that steps through each of these scenarios to clarify anything that might not be straightforward.
      Thanks for watching, Casino Jack!

    when I chose a default to use for my template. Before I burned the DVD, I previewed the different Titles, and they opened and all worked. However, after I burned the DVD, I played it on my Blu-Ray player, and when I tried to select a Title(s) - it wouldn't work - nothing connected to that video. Exported from Premiere Pro, the video is 720X480, 4:3 aspect ratio. When previewing in Roxio, all looks good. The finished burned DVD, though, is WIDESCREEN - with everyone's faces stretched WAAAAAAY out. I see no option in Roxio to choose aspect ratio - I see nothing that would indicate Roxio is going to "adjust" the video to another aspect ratio... I've tried this with mp4 and also mpeg-2 export versions of the same video - and both versions come out completely stretched out. (Frustrating, for sure.) Any suggestions???

      Ivan, I was able to get the 4:3 aspect ratio (FINALLY!) - but only by clicking on the "BASIC" button (maybe called "CLASSIC???"), which takes you to another version (previous version, I'm assuming). Reverting to this "basic" version, you no longer have a lot of the options that the new Titanium 20 boasts about (and the reasons I bought Titanium 20 to begin with!) - but this basic version at least gave me the option of 4:3 aspect ratio, or the 16:9 ratio (if I wanted that instead). The newer version? I don't see where they give me that option at all. Were you able to find anything on your end? Just curious.

      I noticed that over the weekend, but I didn’t finish testing. Toast is supposed to recognize and respect the aspect ratio of the video you put on a disc, but it doesn’t make clear that the dvd menu determines the aspect ratio of the disc.

      Hey, Bob.
      I haven't worked with .NEF files before. Are the files you're trying to convert Nikon Electronic Format (Nikon RAW) files? Are you on Windows or macOS?
      I don't recommend burning these files to a DVD-video format. That will reduce the quality of the images a ton. Instead, I'd spend time trying to convert the NEF file into some other format, like TIFF, which can retain a lot of the quality of those images in a more compatible file type.
      For storing the files, I'd recommend keeping them on a hard drive or flash drive, rather than burning them to Disc.
      You can also create a data CD or data DVD to keep the full quality of the files without putting them into a standard DVD-video format.
      I'll try to help you come up with a workflow, if I can.
