I usually bottom water everything to try to keep fungus gnats at bay. I only have a few (like 13) small plants so it's easy to take them to the sink for watering. Once in awhile I will top water to give them a good soaking. Thanks for this video.🌱🌿🍃
I bottom water al my plants by filling up the decorative pot with water and a tiny bit of algae fertilizer. I recently got a watering probe so i can measure more precisely when the soil is completely dry.
Paper is a great insulator. And recyclable. If your city newspaper(s) prints locally, contact their office and ask if they sell the end rolls of printing paper. They are usually a few dollars or small towns sometimes give them away. Large-width paper rolls that have helped me with moves to wrap dishes and such. Granted, I have never moved plants in sub-zero temps however I think lightly binding your large plants with twine and then wrapping in several layers of paper would help a bit in protecting them. I wish you and your fiance‘ the best of luck with the move and, of course, warmer temps. I enjoy your channel very much and am looking forward to seeing how you 'planterior decorate' your new home! Best, from the US. 🇺🇸~~>🇨🇦
I've only recently realized that all of my plants that are in plastic nursery pots are doing the BEST out of all my plants! When it's time for repotting, I think I'll do the full switch! Love the video!
I absolutely love your channel, even though I have been doing plants for about 5 years now I learn so much from this channel! New sub from Norway here, where it’s also super cold by the way😂personally I prefer summer....and good luck moving😀
My sister mover her big plants in frigid cold Colorado weather. She wrapped them in bubble wrap and then butcher paper. It worked so well! She wasn’t quite as cold as you but substantially below freezing.
You explain things so well. Especially for a beginner like me. You manage to get straight to the point. Please keep up the videos. Good luck with the move & really hope your plants will be ok.
I watched this video (binge watching your channel now) found out about that nifty watering bottle you use that I asked about in your how to make your own moss pole video and found out what I needed to know. I believe it's sold as a succulent watering bottle which makes perfect sense to me. Thanks
Use the silver insulated blankets in emergency kits..you can get them in the dollar store or big box stores for cheap and just tape them to make a big cover or bag and you can cover and move your big plants with them safely :)
Hey, buy a moving box. They have ones that are basically a mini closet! Maybe line it with blankets?! Newspaper is also a good insulation material. Or even sheets of that "pink foam" use to insulate houses ?! You can cut it to size easily ! Use garbage bags around the pots as I am sure with shifting around the soil will get dislodged. Good luck !
I thought you were speaking in Fahrenheit when you said -40 degrees and my face went 😳 and then I remembered you’re a in Canada and went 😅 And then I remember that -40F is the same as -40C and went 🥶 good luck with your move! It’s so cold here as well, I’m trying my best just to keep my plants happy. Hopefully some warmer weather will appear for you!

I also use distilled water on some of my more fussy plants or “rare plants” but how do you go about showering those plants? I have found that a lot of them really like being washed off that way, but I’m afraid of using my water! Any tricks?
If your water doesn't seem to bug plants you can shower them once in a while! If your water does seem to bug plants, you can get a large pressure spray bottle and use that with safe water in the shower!
Hopefully moving is going well as it's warming up just a little bit! Thank you for all the tips! Never would have thought about the soil staying wet where the roots don't reach! Will have to keep thst in mind when I repot my tiny succulents. I am also in Edmonton and wondering if you have a favorite nursery or greenhouse to get plants from?

totally agree about keeping plants in their nursery pots, I just can't understand when someone asks how to water a plant in a hole-less pot, or drill a hole on a beautiful decorative planter, why make everything so complicated when you just need to keep plants in their nursery pots and cover by nicer planters 🤷♀️
if when you get a second to breathe --- we have a question about our plant (ikea) cabinet , we have been keeping the humidity around 90% and notice that we are getting light grey fuzzy mold on the top of the dirt, we have not been running a fan, will that help ? and in general, what do we do about it ? The plants, like our dischidia seem to love the environment, just worried about the mold
Fans will definitely help!!! Remove all the fuzz you can find and air out your cabinet as much as you can for the next few days. Definitely get a good strong fan though, the airflow is important!!
I love the look of the Bismarck Palm behind you! Where did you find that guy? Do you have suggestions for keeping them small like that and not growing a huge trunk rapidly?
Informative as ever- thankyou ! I bottom water with rain water and then flush through from the top once a month. I believe it helps create healthy strong roots as they search for the water that comes up through the soil. It has also been a game changer with regards to fungus knats as the soil does not stay damp for long on the surface so conditions not ideal for them to breed. Wishing you a successful move with all your beautiful plants!
You have my sympathies. I used to live in Edmonton and I recall helping a friend move in bitter cold. Can't imagine doing that with plants! Thankfully I'm now back to my hometown - Victoria, BC. Though I did see a guy driving with a giant Monstera in an open truck bed in the cold and snow the other night 😧 . Poor plant.
I just can't imagine it being that cold outside, I don't want to sound boastful, but here on the Louisiana Gulf Coast, we enjoy a subtropical climate where we can plant many of the hardier tropical plants outside in the ground. For instance, we have palm trees here in Lake Charles that I know have to be in excess of 60 years old, b/c they're so tall! Canary Island date palms and Washingtonia robusta and W. filifera both survive outside. I've seen stands of Bird of Paradise(both varieties) at various locations that even survived last winter, when we had historic freezes and a bout of snow! The point, I think, is that some of the hardier plants can survive and occasional freeze, so long as it doesn't STAY freezing for an extended period, say 24 hours. We have many other periennial tropicals like bananas and elephant ears that freeze to the ground, but pop out again with fresh growth starting anew when spring arrives. I enjoy your channel and subsribed, BTW and like your tips on how to keep houseplants thriving. All the best from Dale Andrews in Lake Charles, LA.
How do you get dust buildup off your cacti? Just put them in the shower like the tropicals? I have some Christmas Cacti, and some small assorted succulents.
I'm preparing a move across country and I'm selling most of my plants right now except my big ones cuz i have no idea how to package them to protect them from the cold 🙈 Good luck! Let's hope it warms up a littlen🤞🤞🤞
