- In this video I share my experience when it comes to the different types of potting soil and mixes you can use for your houseplants. For those beginners who’s just getting into houseplants, determining what type of potting soil to use for which indoor plants can be overwhelming. Hopefully this video will help you understand the different types of ingredients that are found in potting soil mix like Peat Moss, Perlite, Pumice, Cacti Soil, Orchid Bark and Coco Husk. What they do and how they interact with your plants to then determine which type of potting mix is best for your plants to thrive in. Enjoy.

What's your go to potting soil mix for your houseplants?
I just get the one from Dollarama.. So far it has worked lol
Dollarama sells potting soil mix???! 😲
@@CrazyPlantGuy Oh yeah!! I've seen at least three different brands. One is in an orange bag, and the other is blue (smaller bags), but I've also seen a pretty large bag in the gardening aisle. Sometimes they keep them on those shelves that separate the aisles, so just make sure to check everywhere
I am a beginner plant owner. But I realized immediately after my first plant that I tend to overwater so I like my potting mix to be a well draining one. I also like using pumice but it’s a bit hard to find. Coco coir is nice also 👍🏼
Cactus soil. Straight cactus soil for everything. I've tried all kinds of mixes, ratios and different watering techniques and for las Vegas I've noticed my plants are all happiest if I just use straight cactus soil. Strange but it works for all my babies. Also only bark for my orchids. If I use peat moss they get very grumpy.
As a new plant parent, I cannot tell you how helpful this video was. THANK YOU!!
Omg! You have to help me PLEASE, I ordered a lot of vermicompost and cocopeat, all this while I thought a normal potting mix includes - cocopeat, vermicompost, pumice/perlite and a little garden soil! Was I wrong all this while? I thought we add compost because cocopeat does not hold any nutritional value? Please help someone?
Your Pilea impresses me every time. How in the world did this grow so big
😆 a lot of indirect south facing light.
Your plants are very lovely and thriving beautifully in your home. 🌿😍
I pre-mix (coco coir, perlite, worm casting, bark, organic charcoal...very well draining) and use the same soil for every single plant. The/my trick is knowing how wet (or dry) each plant want to be. Basically, plants that luv to dry out vs. those who like to stay moist. I’ve tracked and noted what number range on my water meter each plant thrives, and that’s when I water. Also for my plants, some do better in terra cotta, and others in porcelain or ceramic.
How do you root Snake plants?
My go to is 50/50 potting/cactus soil and some perli in general. For Hoyas adding in orchid bark. It's like cooking.. a little here.. a little there and presto! Thanks for showing us your stuff!
Haha Riight. Like cooking. My go to is the 50/50 and perlite. Always reliable.
Your timing is incredible! I was literally researching into soil ingredients when I saw this video pop up!
Awesome. Happy planting 😊
Me today !! My pothos I bought is turning yellow quick I want to repot and prune b4 I loose it completely 🥴
When I planted my ficus elástica from a cutting I used cacti soil, orchid mix and regular soil and perlite. She’s been thriving since.
I order my soil and then amend it with perlite, succulent soil and orchid bark. My Sansevierias, ZZ plants and Succulents do awesome in this mix.
That’s a great mix that many plants will love. Thanks for sharing
I am so HAPPY you clarified this for me. THANK YOU! because when quarantine hit I had nothing to do but watch UA-cam AND THANK GOD I CAME ACROSS YOUR PLANT VIDEOS!!! and here it goes...... “AHA!!!!! I GOT A GREAT IDEA!! GET PLANTS FOR MY BEDROOM” I have gone from having zero plants to 17 plants in one week. It has been very exciting thus far all my plants are super healthy GROWING fast before my eyes. I know time is coming where I will need to repot some of them. I got plants for beginners according to research (I did for one day). In March I shopped for plants I got ZZ, 10” Diffenbachia , Croton, Hoya rope, Colored Aglomina, String of Bananas, Philodendron Brazil, 10” Mass Cane, Pothos, AND A BEAUTIFUL PONY TAiL PALM. So my go to potting soil will be the three part mix of perlite, pumus, and potting soil mix. That sounds like a GREAT IDEA COMING RROM THE NOT SO CRAZY PLANT GUY. I am rewatching this video a couple of times so I can learn about these ingredients.
I AM IN THE HUNT FOR THAT STRING OF HEARTS❤️ you have all those plants but the string of hearts steals the show!
Black Gold cactus and succulent mix and Black Gold all purpose potting soil mix
Nice. I’ll need to try this brand sometime.
I just absolutely love your videos! I'm only a few months into my houseplant journey and all your videos and vlogs on IG are always so informative.
Aww. Thank you. Glad you find them helpful 😊 and welcome to plant parenthood
I love using cactus mix and perlite for most of my plants since they're succulents/love drainage
Though, my carnivorous plants love peat moss and perlite
Thanks for making such an informational video -- I'm new to plants and love learning!
Loved this video Christian! Great repotting tips. Your soil amendment routine is really inciteful. Thank you!💚🌿
Thanks Debbie. Glad to read you found it helpful 😊
I am way overthinking what to put my Golden Pothos in 😅 I propagated it from my moms plant and I really really dont want it to die
the only thing missing here for my is the compost. I use worm castings. Its what your plant needs for nutrients. Otherwise, this is a great mix which i will incorporate into my own!
A tip for anyone that finds coco coir expensive. If you have a local feed store(like for livestock) then buy the coco from there. I can get a huge block for like $10 here in Canada and it fills up a blue rubbermaid
What is it called at the feed store? I cant find it anywhere
Amy Palladino,
Can you please tell me at which feed store do you buy yours? Thank you and God bless 🙏
What would you suggest I use for my begonia maculata? It came to me with not a lick of soil in it, only coir. I feel like it should have some soil 🤷🏼♀️. I’ve had it since mid April, one new leaf opened and there are about 6 working on it. How do I know when to repot? Again, I feel bad that she doesn’t have any soil. Would love your advice. Awesome video, thanks for sharing! 😊
Thank you Christian enjoyed much. Looking forward to next video. ❤️
I'm thinking of making my own soil. But these items can be hard to find or are really expensive..
Everytime I watch a repotting video, I think about what plants do I need to repot, And usually it is a plant that someone is repotting in their videos lol. So now I am thinking i will put my ponytail palm back in soil since I currently have it living in leca. But my Birkin, that one I have been thinking that I want to repot to leca and now I'm thinking I'll repot in soil. Oh geez... I'm confused.
Amazing video. My plants would die right after repotting...i used regular potting soil...im new to indoor plants. Now ill buy cactis mix and perlite (hopefully i can find pumice) n mix it with my regular soil. Thanks so much 💌
Yes it will help, especially for plants that don’t like to be in moisture or wet soil
Omg that Pilea 🤓
Healthiest looking pilea I've seen. * pumice helps to keep fungus gnat at bay.
Oh cool. Didn’t know that. Another good reason to use Pumice. Thanks for sharing 😊
Super informative. I’m extremely new to keeping any kind of indoor plants. I recently picked up begonia Rex, maculata, and an njoy poth🙌🏻 Al completely different in requirements so understanding your soil potting mixtures was amazing💪🏻
Hi thank you for sharing! Is potting mix same as potting soil?
How did you get your Pilea to climb? Do you have a video? It's stunning!❤
Ooh! I also meant to say that I've been seei g "moisture retaing" cactus mix from Miracle -Grow lately. Makes no sense to me but you need to really look at package to not pick it up.
I have a Pilea peperomioides and a snake plant that are on the verge of dying and I saw this video about soil composition and took one look at your Pilea and literally ran to Home Depot. I also watched all of your videos on plant care (and the fun ones too) and I hope and pray that I can save my plants. I’m a quarantine plant mom and I already have 11. I love them all. :( thank you for making such informative, energetic videos. You have one loyal subscriber! ❤️
Thanks Lydia. Hopefully your Pilea and Snake plants do well...and welcome to plant parenthood. 😊🌿
So sweet. How are those plants doing?
Love the pony tail palm, she’s a beautiful plant baby. She may be common but she’s growing like a Diva💚
Thanks for the soil mix breakdowns, it sometimes can get overwhelming trying to figure out the correct ratios for which type of plants. I sometimes add a tiny amount of vermiculite to my philodendrons and syngoniums being they like to stay on the moist side, not a lot a tiny handful😉🌱
Love the ponytail Palm, can’t wait for her to grow bigger. I might start adding a bit of the vermiculite on some of my mixes that like a bit more moisture too.
😉
I was gifted a variegated string of heart ☺️ do you recommend repotting from the nursery container ? If you do what potting mix do you recommend ?
hey Christian, this is a great video. what's the name of the back ground song?
I usually bring my plants to my local plant shop for repotting but I think I'm ready to do my own repotting thanks to your video!
They do that? Wow must be expensive
@@mwoods4608 they didn't charge me bc both times I asked, I either purchased pots or plants so it was complimentary.
Do you have a video on repotting pothos? Your videos are very informative 😊
Great video, thanks for sharing your information! I would like to add that I’ve read that peat moss isn’t really a renewable resource and isn’t considered environmentally friendly. The bogs that it’s harvested from are ecologically important and don’t recover quickly, so it would be best to try and find alternatives like coconut coir instead! :)
Oh wow. Interesting good to know and thanks for sharing. Coco coir has recently become popular lately as a better alternative to peat moss.
Same, I am a bit disappointed he failed to mention anything about it. Hopefully in the future he will mention it and possibly switch to some alternative.
@@MeeCha disappointed, really?! "He" is only human, he does not know everything. He only shares his experience and learns as he goes like the rest of us.
@@NoName-rx9lo I am human and I can feel however I want. ;) But here are my thoughts:
I continue to follow Christian. I like his content, his hard work, his humor, his personality, and appreciate the information he shares, that of which I also use to educate myself. I learned substrate sustainability early in my plant journey by watching, reading, and following people, which is only a couple of months now, so I admit I'm new to all this too.
With that said, this video speaks explicitly about soil mixtures. He failed to mention a pressing topic: the unsustainable practice of harvesting peat moss and its environmental and ecological impact. This is the source of my disappointment because it affects the plant community and the world. However, props that he said above he is learning, which is fantastic.
He has a significant following, so educating the community about it is beneficial for the world.
@@MeeCha Good for you :)
Thank you for this video. It makes soo much sense. Very beginner friendly.
Mine is very simple : a layer of "leca" (in French it's like clay pebbles) in the bottom of each pot +perlite + a good quality soilmix enriched with fertiliser... voilà ! 🌿🍃🌱Have a nice evening 😉😃
Nice. I like this mix. I might need to try this, I haven’t explored lecca yet. 😊
So informative. The best video so far on the potting mix
Thanks for the planting medium tips😁
Very informative video! Thank you!
I use a premium potting mix for all my plants succulents, cacti everything it seems to work and thrive
Awesome. Thanks for to sharing.
Ace carries pumice in my area
Peat moss is unsustainable, you shouldn't use it.
Do you need to include the old soil into the new soil?! #beginnerplantmom
You could use a bit of the old one of its not old...usually old soil have lost their nutrients.
This was a really detailed video, I appreciate that!
Thank you! I needed this explanation 😍
I purchased 2 tiny expensive a$$ birkins @ $45 a piece and killed them both within 6 weeks. What did I do wrong? Yours is a beauty! How are you doing it?!?!?
Oh no. Did you over watering yours? Mine gets time fo light and I allow the soil to dry out completely between watering
@@CrazyPlantGuy It got a few hrs of direct morning 🌄 everyday. But, I never completely let the soil dry out. That must be where I went wrong. UGH! Thanks man!
Thank you for the idea
What about snake plants?
I normally do what you do, cactus mix, small bark and vermiculite! I find it to be a perfect blend!! :)
I think I might try vermiculite on some of my potting mix.
Please let me know how you like it!
why not just don’t put pearlite on the top layer of your soil, i would suggest to do the last 20% op your soil without perlite! THANKS FOR YOUR TIPS
Hi Christian all of your plants are SO healthy and BEAUTIFUL, but that Pilea Peperomioides is absolutely mind-blowingly GORGEOUS!!💖💖💖🥰
Great vidoe... everyone can learn a lot from this vidoe. I wish people would post more video like this!!! Thank you!!!
I purchased Miracle-Gro and got fungus gnats. It had to come from the Miracle-Gro. I re-potted one plant in my sunroom and went from zero gnats to hundreds. I've been fighting it for three weeks now. UHG !!!
Looking forward your next video beautiful plants 🌱 I love it more videos to watch thanks 🌱🌱🌱💚💛
Great video!! So many different types of soil out there!! What's regular potting soil??
Nice straight forward info brother 👍 just startin off...9 plants all generally small...proud plant father lol
Hi, do you use one kind of potting mix for all your plants. Already watch all your videos but can you make a video what kind of potting mixtute for praying plants, pothos, monstera etc. Thanks.
That Pilea made my jaw drop lol. Nice!
lol...yeah one of my fav plants I raised since it was just a tiny plant.
Hi Christian, Should I water my large plant until it (the water) flows completely through?? Thank you.
Christian thank you this was a very informative video. It was just what I was looking for. 👏
What cacti soil you use
I used to use only cacti mix and perlite. Hate that the perlite eventually finds it way to the top. So I started bottom watering and that helped a lot. Then I got into Aroids and invested in humidifiers. I started noticing my soil was staying too wet too long. So now I add all that chunky stuff and bam back to watering everything once or so a week. Bottom watering doesn’t seem to work too well for me now with the chunky soil. It takes me a couple hours to water now lol. It’s become my special quiet time and allows me to thoroughly inspect em all. 🤗
What size of pumice do you recommend for indoor plants? Mongo size or corn size? I'm having troubles on what to buy...
l add Worm casting and my plants love it
Thank for sharing
Awesome. I need to start using and adding worm castings to my mix. Thanks for sharing
Do you use blood or bone meal? I love my maidenhair fern but during the winter in Canada I am loosing them. Terra cota pots do you think will help? Do you have any suggestion soil/tips?
My previous potting mix was too clumpy and moist, so I start to switch to Coco coir and cactus mix as my plants kept dying from overly wet soil. I'm hoping for improvement
I also can't get pumice .....I use chicken grit...... Plain crushed granite
Really cool video , I’m a reformed plant killer ! So my question I guess is , do you extra water a repotted plant or stick too your water schedule? Thanks for an informative video . Regards Andrew .
Hi I love your videos thank you for sharing! When you brought out your Pilea Peperomia, I just gasped and was so excited, as I have the same and looking forward to it growing like yours, such a beautiful plant. But what really struck me, was your stunning String of Pearls in the background, absolutely stunning can you please do a video on that in regards to repotting and tips please. I live in the UK so things may be called different or cost more or less. You and your plants are amazing and thank-you once again. X
What did you do with the old soil from the Birkin and Ponytail Palm? Can that be combined with your new soil mixture, or has the life been sucked out of it?
I am sort of new to houseplants. A few always died (by either overwatering it or underwatering it). But now I got rid of the fake plants & I am trying again. I was advised by a friend I could use aquarium gravel (I have a bunch around) instead of pumice. The advice was it breaks up the regular potting soil for better drainage... Would that work? I am trying to grow snake plants.
This video was very helpful. Please let me know what soup you use for your Marantas and Calathea plants . I am having hard time with my prayer plants . Memphis is only around 40 to 50 % humidity. So what can I do ?
Absolutely love your videos! I have watched so many. I have a pilea that is not doing great.. all of the bottom leaves are yellowing/ becoming translucent. In direct light north facing window, and I follow your rules for watering. Going to try to repot with your go to soil combo. Considering using some fertilizer too? I'm just not sure!
@crazyplantguy what would you recommend for string of pearls? I’ve tried a generic cactus soil but my first one died... I think the nursery I bought it from was over watering it, so it was far gone when I adopt it. Then I tried it again with a SOP that was well looked after, I only watered it after repotting but now it’s slowly dying 😩 It’s in a terracotta pot, cactus soil and I watered it in with a light seaweed fertiliser. I really want it to live!!!
really enjoyed this video..that pepperomia is fantastic..look forward to seeing those two plants in a couple months.
I have my ponytail but i dont know how to propagate by cuttings😀😀😀 i try a lot of times but its dead😭😭😭😭
I'm a new plant mom, about 3 months in with my plants and I am terrified to kill any, I am having a problem with fungus gnats and I'm planning on repotting all my plants, but I have mixed emotions on what soil will be best for my babies. I have been doing my research for some time now and it seems like a lot of people have issues with these gnats, :(
My go to is dxactly like yours; 50 regular, 50 cactus, then some perlite. I need to look into pumice as many are starting to have it coming to the top. For anthurium I add some peat moss made from spagnum and a few bits og orchid bark instead of any perlite.
I see you have a Polka dot Begonia Maculata. Do you have a video about it, I can't find it? I would like to see how you take care of it and what do you think. I am new to all tropical plants, and i got this begonia, it's so pretty, so now I treasure any information 😊 thank you for your channel, it's a big help
Thank you for explaining the uses of all the different components :)
Hello again, I'm pleased you did a video on soils and soil mixtures. I have noticed a large percentage of my favorote UA-camr plant people tend to leave out the type of soil requirement a certain focus plant thrives in. I find myself many times searching how to take care of a certain plant, and especially the soil. and almost everytime the favorite UA-camr, or most people in general tend to leave that information out. I make my own for the most part for aroid mix, cactus/succulent mix, and then another for ferns, but it's mostly spot on to yours, except I use coco coir a lot instead of the coco husk. Have a great weekend Christian!
I am totally impressed with your collection of plants. Can you please give a list of names of the plants you have.. thanks
How long can you store your soil and additives for? Are the Tupperware you have them in your long term storage solutions?
omg the Pelia has grown since your older videos... something fell on mine and crushed it... sadness!
Wow your Pilea peperomioides is so impressive! I just got a teeny tiny little guy in a 1 inch pot. I really hope he grows to be as big and beautiful as your!
New plant mom here, what type of soil do you recommend for heart leaf philodendron. Thanks
Hi Christian...what do you call that thick stick where the plants climb and where i can buy it?
Thank you for doing this video. Very helpful for me
How often do you guys change your soil if you use coco? Or do you just add nutrients every month o what?
Philadendron Brazil. Best soil combination?
I went crazy at a Canadian Tire store today and it's all your fault. Oh well .. At least I go my Pothos! WOHOOOOOOO
lol. Did you get soil mix and plants?! 😆
Do you water plant right after repotting or you wait day or two? Thanks!
What is SAP?
What I feel is that after sometime the roots spread out in soil n less n less of separation is needed so perlite moving up gradually is a good thing slowly
Thanks for all the info! Where do you get the coco husk?
How do you find out what plant needs what type of soil? Online?
this was a great video and so helpful!! thank you. i just propagated a crapload of my marbled queen pothos- and potted them in a cacti mix. do you think that’s ok? or should i switch to a potting mix? i’m a newbie with pothos- orchids are normally my specialty lol
Great video. Could you do one on fertilizing?
Wow your pilea is thriving!
