Was there ever any doubt that Wiest wasn't going to win for this amazing performance and role? Totally deserved.

Having won the Bafta and the golden globe for her work in the wonderfully made A room with a view, Maggie Smith was most likely to win. But she already had two academy awards, so giving the award to Diane was the wisest choice, I believe.

I'm glad she won but I'm disappointed Mia Farrow wasn't nominated. She stood out for me. It was heartbreaking watching her mystified as to why her marriage was failing. The scene in the bed with Michael Caine never fails to make me tear up. My favourite Woody film.
The reason she was not nominated is that Mia Farrow acts the same way in every movie.

@@luiscontreras-pm2bf That's a little unfair, I don't think Mia is on the same level as Dianne Weist or Diane Keaton but she has had some great performances especially in her Woody Allen movies. I love Sandra Bullock but they gave her an Oscar and she really plays the same role in every movie.

Yes, there was, Mr. Smartypants. I watched the ceremony live back in the day and each actress was introduced with a clip. Maggie Smith's one ended with her "you don't realize how men can be" line in "A Room With A View". And of course the audience clapped.
