Having won the Bafta and the golden globe for her work in the wonderfully made A room with a view, Maggie Smith was most likely to win. But she already had two academy awards, so giving the award to Diane was the wisest choice, I believe.
A well deserved Oscar for a wonderful performance as a young performer yearning to be seen and recognized, not only in the professional theatre world but in life as well. I love Dianne Wiest!
Damn! You could fit Hannah and her sisters, and her parents, and her aunts and uncles, and her cousins, and her in-laws, etc., etc. inside those huge sleeves. Gotta love the 80s!
I'm glad she won but I'm disappointed Mia Farrow wasn't nominated. She stood out for me. It was heartbreaking watching her mystified as to why her marriage was failing. The scene in the bed with Michael Caine never fails to make me tear up. My favourite Woody film.
@@luiscontreras-pm2bf That's a little unfair, I don't think Mia is on the same level as Dianne Weist or Diane Keaton but she has had some great performances especially in her Woody Allen movies. I love Sandra Bullock but they gave her an Oscar and she really plays the same role in every movie.
@BishopWalters12 lol youre an idiot. Sandra Bullock acted the same in Miss Congeniality as she did in Gravity? You dont have to drag another actress down to try and pump another up. Especially when your attempt at a point is so off base and stupid.
Yes, there was, Mr. Smartypants. I watched the ceremony live back in the day and each actress was introduced with a clip. Maggie Smith's one ended with her "you don't realize how men can be" line in "A Room With A View". And of course the audience clapped.
It's nice that I can see Mary Elizabeth on her nomination event. Just watched for the first time Color of Money yesterday, didn't even knew that she was nominated
This video, unfortunatelly, is edited. That´s why we don´t hear applaudings for Maggie Smith. And that´s why we can´t we see the scenes with the performances.
why didn't she thank the man that got her that role Woody Allen. If you pause it at 1:20 she looks like she is getting a high colonic. But, I digress. Sincerely, W. Allen
seems the oscar has a habit of robbing the greatest Dame Maggie Smith. Despite this outrageous oscar snob. They even chose to nominate that janitor lawrence instead of Dame Maggie. And also ignored A Private Function and The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearen.
Perhaps they know that is they nominate her but don't make her win, it will reflect rather hideous on themselves, so they might as well rob her in the nomination. watching Wiest beating Dame Maggie is like watching Oedipus laughing to death! utterly disgraceful.
At first I was surprised no one clapped when they mentioned Maggie Smith, but then I realized Hollywood at the time was 99% American-focused. Maggie didn't become a part of the American movie-going psyche until she showed up as McGonagall in Potter many many years later
Dianne Wiest Judi Dench and Renee Zellwegger look like sisters.
Judi grandma Dianne mom Renee daughter
And richard gere the father
Interesting. I see it.
Dead freagin ringer
Anjelica Huston looked gorgeous that year. What a Goddess
maggie smith reaction is priceless.
so stoic
So shocked she couldn't move.
Very stone faced!😂 I know your joke was better than mine!👍😁
So funny! 😂
She wasn't there!!!! 😅
Hannah and her Sisters
...one of my favorite films!!!❤❤👻
Better than Platoon.
She is something special!
Everything I’ve seen her in (even mediocre movies) she shines. Real authenticity and soul
Was there ever any doubt that Wiest wasn't going to win for this amazing performance and role? Totally deserved.
She looked like she knew.

@@ismaelrosa8091 LOVE Maggie Smith. An international treasure and an acting god. One of the greatest actresses who's ever lived.
@@loveanimals6981 The first time I saw Dianne Wiest was in the fantasy adventure tv movie The 10th kingdom. I loved it.
A well deserved Oscar for a wonderful performance as a young performer yearning to be seen and recognized, not only in the professional theatre world but in life as well. I love Dianne Wiest!
Great little speech. You rarely get ones as classy yet also so succinct. She was very deserving of that win, as well.
She's so natural and beautiful.
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio was so stunning! What a beauty!
Yes, and most people don’t know that she’s also a legit musical performer with an operatic voice.
I think she deserved another nomination for her supporting role in "The Rabbit Hole", playing Nicole Kidman's mom.
I agree.
Heartbreaking performance
Dianne Wiest dresses at Oscar were always on fire!!!❤️❤️ Beautiful!
She served too that year with the hair and earrings🔥🔥
Love Dianne Wiest, She’s a true gem
Such a great lady
Love Dianne, She's such a wonderful actress.
Dianne Wiest has great acting in Hannah and Her Sisters.
Damn! You could fit Hannah and her sisters, and her parents, and her aunts and uncles, and her cousins, and her in-laws, etc., etc. inside those huge sleeves. Gotta love the 80s!
Well deserved oscar and Anjelica looks good
Wonderful actress!
What an amazing actress, everything she does is perfection
I love this movie, she is a great actress
So well deserved!!! I LOVE her! :) I LOVE this movie!
Dianne, was so super, duper, in this film ...terrific, extremely talented actress 🎭🎬
I'm glad she won but I'm disappointed Mia Farrow wasn't nominated. She stood out for me. It was heartbreaking watching her mystified as to why her marriage was failing. The scene in the bed with Michael Caine never fails to make me tear up. My favourite Woody film.
The reason she was not nominated is that Mia Farrow acts the same way in every movie.
I agree, the movie is amazing.

I love Dianne Wiest, she's brilliant, I hope she will make many other great movies and that she gets nominated for The Rabbit Hole (or win her third).
oh she's so sweet, i first saw in the Lost Boys. She made me wish she was my mum in that film. love her!!
Such a great performance and win!
I think Dianne is adorable.
My favorite Woody Allen movie and Weist also won about a decade later for Bullets Over Broadway which was also written and directed by Woody Allen.
pandemic brought me here TB watching all Oscars winners congrats,

barbara hershey should also have been nominated for hannah and her sisters.
So Maggie smith even back in the day didn't show up to award shows
She attended the 1979 and the 2002 ceremonies.
oh is that why nobody clapped when her name was read??
I believe the last time she went to the Oscars was in 2002 when she was nominated for Gosford Park.
@@jbug1979 The clip was edited.
@@renan.csmaia really? I don't think it was....
I love Diane :

so true!
How beautiful she looks
What a speech!
It just isn't the way it used to be. Obviously Hollywood was always self involved, but back then it was more honest and passionate with proud actors.
Am I the only one who noticed she was wearing the chandelier earrings from the Elizabeth Taylor collection? (With pearls attached)
It's so obviously edited. When they start announcing, the applause starts and cuts out. Get a grip people, Maggie Smith is a star!
Wiest definitely deserved to win, she was great in HaHS. But it's too bad that the editing takes away the applause for Maggie Smith.
Her "Lost Boys" look.
a veteran actress
She deserved it.
Why no one was clapping for Maggie Smith? Screw them all she's the best!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
They cut out the film clips because of rights issues, hence the editing.
@zim83 There was no editing!
OK, my bad. It just didn't look like there was any editing in the video. :P

master antonio was nominated?
@andrewdisney1 Listen at 0.05 ish, there is clapping-- it is edited strangely. Obviously they would clap... I mean it is Magge Smith for christ sake!
wow, just look at that dress...
you can tell it was the 80s..
0:45
where is Maggi Smith then???
"Maggie Smiss"?
Thanks to Woody Allen
Hannah is a better movie then Platoon
should have won 0:27 she was sexy tough in The Color Of Money like Lauren Bacall
Me encanta la actuación de diane Pero el oscar era para maggie smith
like *YEAST*
Why wasn't anyone applauding for Maggie Smith?
Piper Laurie
Maggie SMITHS????
No problem, sorry about the smartypants part but all those "why didn't they applaude for Maggie Smith" comments are tedious ;-)
She looks like a younger Judi Dench.
@MsSarjen It's because she wasn't there.
Well it was 1987. What more can you say? That explains it. lol
why didn't she thank the man that got her that role Woody Allen. If you pause it at 1:20 she looks like she is getting a high colonic. But, I digress. Sincerely, W. Allen
Why Didn't Anyone Clap For Maggie Smith? Seriously?
Poor Maggie Smith D:
Maggie Smith was not there
Oh the 80s :) ... I'll not remark on the fashion than
Sorry about my english.
Too bad Diane did the Timothy Green movie.
Perhaps because she had already told the press that she wouldn't attend the ceremony, and was rather disdainful doing that!!!
@andrewdisney1 It's because she wasn't there.
Probably because Maggie wasn't in the audience.
No lecture or politics, a nice short speech and that is why the Oscars used to have high ratings.
Like yeast
Because she wasn't there!
edward come home!
PIPER LAURIE WAS ROBBED.
For the third time...
And the nominees are..
.....5 white women

Maggie Smith won for Prime of Miss Jean Brody and California Suite. It’s not like Hollywood has ignored her.

Maggie Smith had won two Oscars at this point. This clip is noticeably edited at 0:08.
All that is totally false, Kerry
None of that is true.
Mia Farrow implied in her autobiography that Dianne and Woody had an affair!!!
At the time Woody preferred little girls.
"I can sing, Hannah! For Christ's sake you've heard me sing!"
