To combat this, I tend to choose adventurous and aggressive roles to offer my team some punch up front. I'm still watching the video, loving it. Let's go...
So having started watching this channel I have made two major changes. 1. I start the game with very basic instructions and adjust throughout the game. So I might see weakness and twist my team to cover it. 2. I play the game full instead of highlights so I don't get scripted. I am 21 games in with 16 wins and 5 draws with no meta tactics. A bonus third is I have started looking for just two main stats per position. My d rated signing according to fans at right back is my best performing player. Took some of your advice and managed to beat PSG with my midtable team in Ligue 1 quite comfortably! My first non loss against them in 5 years! And yes this is only against the AI! ;-)
Tried the Regista as DM and very happy with it. Playing against a Leeds side that parked the bus at home which Ive struggled with in recent seasons getting caught on the counter and them having lots of posession around the back. Won 3-0, they had 0.06 x/G, we had 61% possession with him making 8 interceptions when his average before was 2 a game. Will try this with a Regista and VOL/A double pivot and AP/S first as a CM and then in the AM slot.
Settled on the AP/S in the AM slot, the amount of key passes everyone is making is insane. Also with the AP/S in that position rather than on the left of midfield he can affect more of the pitch. Also nice thing with changing to a 4231 is I don't have to have pressing intensity high to press effectively, with a 433 I had a game management tactic but the nature of the formation mean't it really handed momentum to the opponent, but with this change I can crank the intensity down and I'm more solid but still press when needed. I've read that book many years ago and i thought Mourinho as well, because on his first season in Real Madrid he was playing Ronaldo, Ozil, Di María and Marcelo on the left side of the field together during moments at matches.
I really like your point from 37:04 which is mainly about midfield roles with hold position. I'm big on "rest defence" in IRL football so having at least one of them makes me feel good because I'm protecting my defence from opposition's counter, but unfortunately I do see them contribute less in attack & sometimes become a pressing trigger for the AI to either intercept a pass from them or use the offside trap whenever a through ball comes from them. Also, while hearing your point, I don't know why but it feels Postecoglou's Tottenham system could probably suit in FM because it does offer a lot of variety in attack. Counters, underlaps, 1v1 winger isolation, baiting the press, etc. Sometimes though they commit too many players in attack & probably only left three players - besides the goalie - that hold position in that system (the two CB & the DM). Also like you referencing Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea performance against Man City. That Chelsea was rich in tactic variety. So rich that I read a rumour that after Graham Potter replace him (& Potter actually has a variety of tactics in his disposal), the players feel like it's a downgrade. First saw your video analyzing the FM World Cup final & saw some other more but this one really gives me good understanding of the game. Thank you for the video.
I’m a anomaly. Have ever understood the 433 both in FM and to be honest in real life. I love systems with 2 forwards like 442 diamond, or 4231 w a second striker Bayern style. It’s beautiful how we all see the game differently
Hello, loving your content, I would love a video where you go through every position, like in your "How i dominate part 3" video, and you state exactly for every position what attributes you are looking at
I always use the 4-3-3 and thought this was a guide to use it, but it did ended up being in a guide in a way lol I've long had this subconscious frustration with the 4-3-3 in making it play in FM as close to how I envision it irl (which in a way is also why I like to use it?) The video adds to a lot of my assumptions. Like I've been exclusively using it in a more passive Midblock with standard/slightly more pressing for a while now, because the compactness solves the bad pressing and plugs up the gaps I do mostly play on my own against the AI, but this does give me an idea of how to adjust to play more aggressively or more meta for another tactic slot
A midblock with 433 I find horrible, I use that as a game management option but really don't like it as it just hands the upper hand to the opposition. Mentioned it above but I've tweaked my 433 to a 4231 with my midfield changing from a DM, CM/A and AP/S to REG, VOL/A AMC(AP/S) and it put the players in the same positions when attacking but is more solid, and also I can drop the pressing intensity without losing too much in terms of momentum> Feel a bit dirty as love 433 but think in FM it doesn't quite work as Id like it to and 4231 can do what I want my 433 to do even without gegenpressing.
@@DuncanB1972 if you want to give 433 a go again, try it with a SS or T in the AM slot, I suggest a SS as a good T is way harder to find. for the wide areas, IF or T if you have that type of winger, but no more than 1 T in the line of 3
Bro for some reason I can’t even beat the ai with 433. I’ve won crazy things with 4231, 352,442,424 etc etc every formation but somehow get spanked when I play 433.
Great content. I tend to play a 4231 vs a 433 like you mentioned here, and I play a 3421 narrow vs a 4231. Be good to see how you yourself set up against other popular formations like 4231 and 343 👍
Your videos are amazing man, i learned so much, keep them coming, i wander if you have any tips for when you manage the worst team in the league, for example, whan you just achieve promotion to a top league.
I'm rewatching the video today, feels like a lecture I'll always refer to when I need tactical advice, I notice the 3-4-2-1 helped me win La Liga against FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, (I lost twice that season, video coming soon), but in the next two seasons I switched to a 4-3-3 to try and play more direct, finished 4th, and 5th, LOL. I might go back to that 3-4-2-1 system. It felt too defensive though, any tips on how to make it more aggressive against the smaller/midtable teams?
I played a season mostly with 3 at the back and was too defensive. Defo think switching when you need to is best. Can make wing backs, defensive wingers. But yeah for much more attacking got to go 4 at the back
Hey! I really love your content. As a fan of 4-3-3 seeing it get bantered here was 😂. Anw! Is possesion tactic viable in the pvp draft? Im one of those guy who really like the high possesion game thank youu
You have talked of how DLP is a bot role, Vol is useful and how movement to players is healthy. Could you do a video where u explain more about the roles? and what is the big difference AI vs. player / player vs player. I learn alot of u content, thank you
DLP not mobile. 'hold position is not great' The AI is just making a very basic tactic to make the game easy. Real players are using really good tactics
Always hated the 4-3-3 worst pressing shape in the game, even vs the AI. Most of them use a box midfield and it leaves ur pivot 2v1. Top video as always mate
FM need to implement in-possession and out-of-possession positions ASAP if they want to keep up with real life football tactics PES/Efootball games already have this feature long time ago.
This begs a new question about the 4-3-3, Yes I agree we'll need a solid God-tier DM to cover the half-spaces when we're out of possession. But how does the AI manage to defend so well in a 4-3-3 and create chances without leaving gaps at the back?
@@DarkHorseFM2023 the AI is terrible at defending in a 4-3-3 you just need to know how to attack the weakness. Players either side of the DM seem to work really well, two strikers who can drop deep work really well.
Here to defend the 433. ❤ I love 433 and i agree too balanced is not a good strategy. So I usually go overload right or left with wb mez winger on one side. Focus play on that side. Great DLP is a must. Striker need to change between AF or DLF depends on the opponents. But the main actor is my raumdauter on the other side. The options are crossing from overloaded side, or opening the center/half space on the other side if they dont let you cross the ball. Symetrical 433 is not going to work. Defensive strategy. Play narrow, give up flanks. Mid block. Winger track back opponent's FB/WB if available.
The problem with the symmetrical 433 is on the attacking side as the front 3 are relatively isolated compared to other tactical set ups so you need an elite front 3 capable of dribbling, passing and scoring. Basically 3 forwards that could do it all
Each video gets more interesting. How do you make your WBs to press the opposition FBs in the 3412 example given at around 20mins? They naturally go and press because of the OOP team instructions?
@@bosqueSP it's just what will happen in game because that's technically the only person to press them. Once the FB starts to advance the wing back will go up to press, assuming you have max press /gengenpress on all time. You can move them up to defensive winger if you want them to press up even higher.
I'll watch 45 minutes videos on how 4-3-3 is weak and still find reasons to use it in almost every odd career since FM 2008 😅 I guess that because I play solo and not against real players as You've mentioned somewhere along the lines
Same! Although thinking I could adapt my 433 into a 4231 for more effective pressing, a more solid double pivot and still get my players attacking in the same way. Even against the AI I do suffer from not having a double pivot at times.
I was the same. I always played a 433 or some variant but last season I started experimenting with some old school tactics from teams in Brazil from the 50s and 60s to eventually stumbling on a 4231 variant, solid defensively and free flowing in attack. Doesn't stay as a 4231 as it ends up pretty much being a 244 in attack😂
If you're strong everywhere, you have missed the opportunity to use the one thing that probably gives you the most advantage or uniqueness. I used to always play my strongest team depending on the opposition. FM however has like the real game has evolved and tactics play a much larger part. It's about having a healthy mix of both I guess the best team you can play with the best tactics against a particular opposition and measuring where their strengths/weakness is . I have around 6 main tactics I use and I will tweak on times depending on the opposition. Movement is key in this years FM.
I use the 433 a lot and I’ve beaten the ai and other players playing the 4231 and 442, I have different 433 systems with different roles to counter the team I’m playing. 🤷🏻♂️
@FletchTheSauce tbh I play v ppl who use "meta" tactics. (Drives me nuts they can't create there own) but I change my system based on data hub. Good staff needed
What would you do against a better team using 4-3-3 with left back being pretty good offensively and right back being an inverted fullback? Im thinking about setting up in a 4-2-3-1 with my left winger hugging the touch line (to strech their iwf) and right winger as an inverted winger with stay narrow. This team Im up against is Real Madrid so they don't have any clear weaknessess unfortunately
You mention pushing the right winger more central to beat a 4-3-3. but with the new positional play stuff an inside forward will push into that space freeing up space for the WB Also the top tactic on fm arena right now as DMs with hold position. Would you consider using those even though you say hold position isn’t suitable?
@@josephchambers4509 its not to best the 4-3-3, it's to move the winger away from the full back. I'm saying hold position on a playmaker isn't great. Because of hard coded focus play. There's no hold position on any attacking roles. Obviously
@@Vulacior if the guy is asked to get up into the channels, he wont be able to defend as much because he's so far forward. This is why it's important to get the balance correct. You want an attacking threat but without being countered easily.
Paused at 22 minutes because I couldn't believe you're tactic is almost the same as the one I've been trialling. I've just swapped what was a right sided BBM to a Volente because we were concerning too much from that area, but why do you prefer a regista to a DLP?

I still don’t understand fully making the tactic changes DURING the game is appreciate a video on this please.
But in brazilian portuguese the meaning is a bit different. In the game os almost a different version of box to box, when in portuguese just means defense midfilder. And you would have primeiro volante, who would stay back, and segundo volando, who would go foward a bit.
@@FletchTheSauce i ask this question coz u see u try explain about AI and about weak and power of tactic, thats why i ask which formation would u suggest :)
16:50 so with 4-4-2 you would make BOTH of your forwars as a F9/dlp/target man to drop alongisde the pivot? Or just one, while the other one remains an advanced forward?
I like to have one player stretching the play, so I like the advanced forward, but I do like them on roam from position. I use a combo of pressing forward, complete forward but mostly always paired with an AF.
I normaly see on data hub..but imagine PSG plays with Mendes and hakimi and me wih Benfica on first season..in the hub Inverted FB but in game looks more like CWB make all the wing like horses
Love your content but whenever I face inverted full backs especially against Liverpool, AI just seems to have a field day evertime. Just feel sometimes AI on FM has those games where they’re destined to win no matter what you do or how good your run on form is. Does my head in 😂

Hi Fletch! Again me :D Can you explain counter press instruction how works with player roles? I believe 2xVOL not works perfectly with counter press againist weak teams
@@kemaloguzhanyeyit9018 2x vol on which systems and why wouldn't it work against weaker teams? Counter press is a focus on the ball and an urgency to get it back, at the expense of leaving your area, which means multiple people could end up pressing one player.

Sorry but what I dont understand is how unbalanced tactics like this exploit the match engine, this is a shame because is not like real football, I mean playing playing two VOL(a) with a RGA(s) leaves you with no holding midfielder, I cant see why the ME (even playing against IA) dont penalize you for doing such thing like leaving a huge gap on the number ten strata. I love football manager but I still think that the ME needs tweaks to make more balanced tactics to compete, now with positional play I get the same result, everyone is playing like a 3-2-5 on possesion even when your best players on the teams are flank player where you can create a effective partnership.
I agree with you, meanwhile I might have some explanation on your point about 2 VOL and 1 RGA. RGA is the holding midfielder, the reason is in practice RGA sit as deep as DLP if not deeper, despite RGA has roam from position as hard-coded PI. Meaning that when you lose the ball, your first line of defense has 2 layers that the opponent has to overcome: VOL pressing the player while RGA pressing the space. and all of this is aggravated by the fact that current ME is good at making players move forward while sucks at making players track back.

The "art of war meets FM" you're talking about is THOG's "Lines and Diamonds" tactical guide he made for FM15 I'm pretty sure.
Hello, loving your content, I would love a video where you go through every position, like in your "How i dominate part 3" video, and you state exactly for every position what attributes you are looking at
I always use the 4-3-3 and thought this was a guide to use it, but it did ended up being in a guide in a way lol
I've long had this subconscious frustration with the 4-3-3 in making it play in FM as close to how I envision it irl (which in a way is also why I like to use it?)
The video adds to a lot of my assumptions. Like I've been exclusively using it in a more passive Midblock with standard/slightly more pressing for a while now, because the compactness solves the bad pressing and plugs up the gaps
I do mostly play on my own against the AI, but this does give me an idea of how to adjust to play more aggressively or more meta for another tactic slot
A midblock with 433 I find horrible, I use that as a game management option but really don't like it as it just hands the upper hand to the opposition.
Mentioned it above but I've tweaked my 433 to a 4231 with my midfield changing from a DM, CM/A and AP/S to REG, VOL/A AMC(AP/S) and it put the players in the same positions when attacking but is more solid, and also I can drop the pressing intensity without losing too much in terms of momentum>
Feel a bit dirty as love 433 but think in FM it doesn't quite work as Id like it to and 4231 can do what I want my 433 to do even without gegenpressing.
@@DuncanB1972 if you want to give 433 a go again, try it with a SS or T in the AM slot, I suggest a SS as a good T is way harder to find. for the wide areas, IF or T if you have that type of winger, but no more than 1 T in the line of 3
Great video. Opened my eyes to a different way of playing. Any advice on going against a 5-3-2 formation or 3-4-3 ?
@@MrImzy videos will come soon
Yep, I’ve destroyed the AI almost everytime with 4-3-3 but then I played with my friends and I got stomped everytime😂
At least you admit it! Thanks for your comment bro 😊
Be good to see how you yourself set up against other popular formations like 4231 and 343 👍
Thank you. That sounds pro.

I love you bro, where were you all these years
3:37 felt personally attacked there
I'm rewatching the video today, feels like a lecture I'll always refer to when I need tactical advice, I notice the 3-4-2-1 helped me win La Liga against FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, (I lost twice that season, video coming soon), but in the next two seasons I switched to a 4-3-3 to try and play more direct, finished 4th, and 5th, LOL.
But yeah for much more attacking got to go 4 at the back
@@FletchTheSauce thanks mate, I appreciate all the tactical advice. 💪🏾
'hold position is not great'
The AI is just making a very basic tactic to make the game easy. Real players are using really good tactics
Hold position in combination with focus play (which is hard coded) means in a system they will keep passing back to him even when advancing.
Always hated the 4-3-3 worst pressing shape in the game, even vs the AI. Most of them use a box midfield and it leaves ur pivot 2v1. Top video as always mate
I am actually taking notes here

FM need to implement in-possession and out-of-possession positions ASAP if they want to keep up with real life football tactics
PES/Efootball games already have this feature long time ago.
They had this thing in CM era😂 .
@@jonpaul3868
Every year we asked for this feature among others, Miles said "it's not relevant to football management game".😂
@@RapidReveal541 sounds like something that would work against the AI.
The problem with the symmetrical 433 is on the attacking side as the front 3 are relatively isolated compared to other tactical set ups so you need an elite front 3 capable of dribbling, passing and scoring. Basically 3 forwards that could do it all
will you do 4231 next?
@@hafizkhair22 or a 3 at the back one .
@@bosqueSP thanks for the gets more interesting comment. Really appreciate that 😊
I'll watch 45 minutes videos on how 4-3-3 is weak and still find reasons to use it in almost every odd career since FM 2008 😅 I guess that because I play solo and not against real players as You've mentioned somewhere along the lines
@@Legend-zo9bc sounds pro to me!
Could you possibly do how to beat the 4231 next?
@@BlueComps_24 most likely or it will be the one after. I got you though
I use the 433 a lot and I’ve beaten the ai and other players playing the 4231 and 442, I have different 433 systems with different roles to counter the team I’m playing. 🤷🏻♂️
Thats cool, I said good examples of 4-3-3's that are useable. Just depends on how good their 442 and 4231 is.
This sounds like a good plan to me. Im just happy to see people playing with plans!
Surely a lot of this is about movement and fluidity as opposed to static positioning.
You mention pushing the right winger more central to beat a 4-3-3. but with the new positional play stuff an inside forward will push into that space freeing up space for the WB
Also the top tactic on fm arena right now as DMs with hold position.
Obviously
@@josephchambers4509 when you IF will push up in space, are you considering your out of possession shape?

@@Vulacior if the guy is asked to get up into the channels, he wont be able to defend as much because he's so far forward.
This is why it's important to get the balance correct. You want an attacking threat but without being countered easily.

@@kemaloguzhanyeyit9018 2x vol on which systems and why wouldn't it work against weaker teams?
Counter press is a focus on the ball and an urgency to get it back, at the expense of leaving your area, which means multiple people could end up pressing one player.

I would argue that if you have a book people still read after thousands of years, you are still very dead but not very very dead.
@@nomorevodka7354 I did say the regista, 2 vols has negatives I believe.
