Mike Hargrove told a story that a few months after the World Series ended, he was approached and asked about how long it took him to get over the Game 7 loss to the Marlins. He simply replied: "When it happens [when he gets over it] I'll let you know." In 2016, after the Indians had won the AL Pennant and went to the World Series for the first time since that 1997 season, Hargrove was again approached and asked the same question. His reply was: "When it happens, I'll let you know." You don't forget.
My dad knew every single one of those players and their wives when he was working at Spitzer downtown Cleveland. They called Thome Mr big head cause his head got so big from all the fame. I wish my dad was still around so he could see this 2024 season with me.
My uncle is from Florida and was not really a huge baseball fan. But he watched every single game in this series and I was right there with him. He went crazy during this game it was awesome to see. I have a 97 Marlins cap and it's one of my favorite fitteds.
I love this series. Really sucks for Tony Fernandez. A great postseason, clutch hits, but ended up as a goat because of that misplay. Also have to love Bonilla's trot after his home run.
Fernandez had both RBIs for the Indians so without him in that game they lose for sure unless someone else would have come up clutch. Who knows Counsell gets a walk off sac fly.
@user-gu4tv4hp6sthat is correct. Baseball is by far the most completed American sport. Yet in baseball you don't have to be a great athlete. Hitting a 95 mph Fastball is hard. Being able to hit a curve, slider, change up is a skill that is hard to learn. Playing centerfold and running down a ball hit 35 40 meters slicing away from you is a skill only 5 % of baseball players able to do.
For all four home games at Pro Player Stadium in Miami Gardens, for this World Series the attendance was over 67,000 . For Game One it was 67,245. For Game Two it was 67,025 with many fans seating in sections where they could not see the entire playing field. Game 6's attendance of 67,498 was the highest single-game attendance for the World Series since Game 5 of the 1959 World Series, when 92,706 people filled the football-oriented Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Game 7's was on Sunday October 26 The attendance was 67,204.
In the 2003 World Series against the Yankees all 3 games in Miami were over 65,000 - the capacity was downsized a bit but the place was packed then too
@@bentheswitchsportsfan06 Bartman was barely anything about that . The Cubs choked. They had 3 games to win and didn't. Plus Alex Gonzalez (Cubs) booting that double play ball was the true thing that messed the Cubs up. And they were still winning at that point. They allowed what 8 runs that inning ? And you want to Blame a fan? That's being stupid. The Cubs flat out choked. Your best 2 pitchers imploded and the manager was an idiot. You got outplayed the last 3 games sorry. The better team won. The Cubs beat the better team a couple years ago to erase the curse. It happens.
@@LudaChezFunny thing is that Alou would have made catch I still think. Yet still 2 outs. So if Gonzales still makes error? With 2 outs they might have thrown different pitches. As a cub fan all it was? This is going to get worse. Cannot have a easier ball hit to a guy for a double play. Prior should have been pulled. Felt bad for him a Wood. Both Were not coached right. Wood as a rookie would be cruising into 4th 5th. Then he would start trying to throw a curve. One guy said. They can't hit your fastball or slider. Why bother throwing curve.
Renteria 3-5 with a walkoff world-series series winner and a run-saving defensive play at 0:58 . He sure picked the right game to have a good performance.
I was 12 and I remember after that hit I ran to my room crying and was so heartbroken. I thought 25 years later I would be able to watch this and nope...eyes watering up a bit lol.
My real favorite question is....with a proper off-season could the Marlins have defended against an all time Yankee team? As a Marlins fan, I think not. But I feel it would have been closer than you think
As a indians fan this hurts so much. But I feel bad for Fernandez. He sent us to the WS and then put us up 2-0 but he needs to make that play in the 11th.
I was 8 years old when this happened. Before the series started my father called ticket master and told me i have good news and bad news. Good news is i found tickets. Bad news is all they have available is game 7...
It may not seem like much, but Al Leiter finding his curveball when it was needed most especially against Justice and Thome played a big part in the Marlins winning because that kept the Marlins in the game and enabled Florida to win. Without that I feel Cleveland scores more making a comeback more difficult against a dialed in Jaret Wright.
Still hurts to this day. A championship would have meant a lot more to Cleveland than it did to Miami. Wayne Huizenga dismantled the team several months later. Joke.
I think Bonilla was just trying to avoid getting hit by the ball, if the ball hits him he's out and it's a deadball. I don't think he was being particularly clever otherwise.
I don't think florida is a baseball state, they are more football than baseball even though the Marlins have more championships than the miami dolphins in recent History, i don't think anyone cares for baseball in Florida.
South Florida is a winner state. Once a team wins they support. Look at how we love basketball now. How we loved and slightly abandoned football. How the Marlins won twice and have had what 4 fire sales? New Marlins with Jeter and Sherman will make the Marlins consistent winners (I'm not saying constant rings but constant playoff hunts) and Miami will be a baseball town again. Just watch
Bucky Dent? What if you were a cub fan and the guy who had the most hits and doubles in 90s. Was not signed to retire a cub. He leads off inning and then another ex cub drives his pinch runner to win series. Now Counsell is Cub Manager.
Shortly after that amazing team was disbanded to shreds.. so much for the love of the sport and the fans. It was a hard blow to many in many ways.

MANCHESTER UNITED F.C shut up soccer fan nobody cares about that terrible slow sport over here.

I was 11 years old when this happened and I was absolutely crushed by the Tribe losing to the Marlins. 22 years later, yep still tough to watch.
Same here.. I was 13 years old
Wellll 2016 was even worse
It was soul crushing
Same here I was in FL I was too young to understand what amazing team we had, looking back now we haven't had those moments since
Charles Johnson was a very underrated catcher defensively.
Totally agree. He was one of those catchers that was so great defensively, it didn't really matter what he did with the bat.
Facts
@@paulmd2010 he had a decent bat as well.
Top 10 of World Series endings. Extra innings, game winning hit on 2 outs, in the home ballpark.

At 13 I got to go to game 7 of the 97 World series. For the next few days I couldn't speak but I was screaming with joy so much after they won.

I was called into work early that night! Watching this game made my night!
My dad loved the marlins he died 4/27 97. And Marlins won world series this year
Cool add on. Marlins take a 2nd World Series win, then a few years later, Cubs win it all. Closure.

I like when Bonilla grabbed Leyland that was all the frustration from their two failed post-seasons in Pittsburgh coming out right there.

No, your lights out closer needed to do his job in the 9th.
I remember the 97 win 103 was on fire the beach was crowded people frm outta town had no clue what was going on 😂😂 I Love Florida
I lost part of my soul that night. Literally crushed me to my soul...and don’t get me started on “Joe Table”.

love this series... Please make one for AL wild card 2014 i believe royals athletics and game 7 of 2016 world series, both great games

I wonder it Indians fans which one hurts more the 1997 World Series or 2016 World Series
If Bonilla shielded Fernandez on that play in today's game, he would've been called out for player interference, but at that time it was legal.
You're insane that's a 100 percent legal play he stopped before and yeah you're allowed to do it you see it all day and will keep seeing it.
Bonilla made a smart play get over it scrub
Nope. That is now and will forever be a legal play.
I think Bonilla was just trying to avoid getting hit by the ball, if the ball hits him he's out and it's a deadball. I don't think he was being particularly clever otherwise.
Either way, Fernandez should've made the play!

Great Seris Marlins. deserved It Our Closer choked
The Indians choked again but the cubs didn’t 😅
Mike Hargrove y su mala decision de sacar a Mike Jackson por Jose Mesa en el 9no episodio, le costo la Serie Mundial a los Indios.

That indians team was such a waste of a stacked team
I is indian fans 😔
It would be better if we didn’t her Bob Costas
Nothing like losing game 7 because of a wormy little scrub named Craig Counsell.
