MATCHBOX Restoration Major Pack No.6a Scammell 6x6 Tractor 1960
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- This massive unit could transport 200 tons! To support the weight the trailer has twelve wheels and to do the pulling the tractor is a six wheel drive design! This model was quite a challenge as the towing lugs on the front part of the trailer were broken off and had to be repaired. The colour was also a little odd as these models came out in various shades of red and blue.
I wish I could see one on the road, what a magnificent sight it would be.

Although I am new to model restoration, I have history with full size vehicle body repair. A good job does require fiddling around a bit, taking patience. But the final result is worth it as you masterfully show. Thank you.
I think that the features moulded on the rear of the prime mover, are meant to be winch rollers. I have the orange coloured large version of this, and that's what they resemble.
An excellent restoration of a really cool toy. Thank you!
Great video with heaps of restoring information. Thanks for showing the drill press and nail punches. Great idea.
Great job Marty! That dark red paint looks superb. That’ll look great in your display
Another work of art marty
Nice work... Marty would organize an Matchbox museum... It would be very funny to visit.
Yet another makeover of yesteryear. Really nice job I remember seeing these heavy lorries on the road, as regards to to the rear end of the truck the rollers were for winching loads onto the the trailer, the cable was hidden in the big box on the back.
A Great Sunday afternoon's enjoyment of a new Video and Model. Thank you, Mr. Marty
Brilliant work and craftsmanship! I was looking to restore a vintage Tootsietoy 1956 Pontiac Safari wagon to match my project car and found you by chance. Your tips and examples gave me the confidence to dive right in!
I must thank you. Watching your video finally I mustered the techniques to correctly use the decals!
Very interesting video, very nice work.
As far as the fan goes, when I used to paint in the garage I would tape a house air filter to the back of a box fan. You don't need that much air but they make small desk type box fans that you could put a disposable filter on. 👍👍
Great tip!
Hi Marty. From rubbish back to life, Looks fantastic, take your time and get it right, All the Best Brian 🤗
Hy Marty, these are the horizontal guide rollers and the pulley on the left of the rear winch.
With this restoration you have once again outdone yourself.
It's not the quantity of videos you release but the quality of them, I really enjoy watching and learning new things.
🍺 cheers....!
Good job. Might try using a small soldering iron instead of the torch. I find it more user friendly. Blasting anything that small and soft material will always remove some of those small details like grill. Love watching your videos each Sunday morning with my coffee. Have a good day Marty.
liked this restorations I remember having one of these new as a child. Mine had two tractors one pulling and the other pushing. great finish well done
Beautiful restoration on this one Marty wow like it just came out of the box job well done
Nice Job ! Its a fantastic casting and looks like new . Nice to see on a rainy day .
I had this model it was my pride and joy, my only complaint with the Matchbox range was all the different scales, super job
Very nice, a handsome piece to say the most. Pretty sure it's for transporting heavy machinery or even locomotives or traction engines. The lowloader is definitely dedicated to some purpose as that. I need one for my layout, hopefully one turns up somewhere.
Absolutely brilliant, great job .I so happy that you restore to original. I also only restore Matchbox. No customs . Your tutorials are get.
As always, great headline from The Sun. One of the little details I love from your videos!
This model would be the kind of transporter that would transport antique steam engines like the green engine you restored.
Good job Marty. Yes the Soda Blaster is the way to go. I use it in restoring model plane engines which are aluminum casting. Brings them up like new.
Another great tape😁😁 sorry for the pun.a good restoration and we'll done with the colour match 👍👍
Awesome work as always.
But this set came out perfect 👌.
WOW 😳. Mike Espo .
Another brilliant UA-cam post thank you Marty, can you make a post of your model cabinet with your completed masterpieces in
Always do a great job, but this was a large stretch, beautiful !
Very very nice job a fantastic product you should be proud of you self 👌👍
Great job. Nice toy. Cool video👍
I'm watching your work from Uruguay. I just love to see the things you do. Thanks for sharing.
Wow you always do such and amazing job. I really enjoy watching you work on these match box cars and trucks
I wanted to tell you about nutshells. But you knew about it already.
I think it does a very good job, removing paint, and being gentle with the metal.
When this vehicle was boxed, the tractor sat on the trailer. If they put the tractor in front it would have been really long, and therefore the box would be too long. So when you see this in the original box the paint on the trailer will be chipped where the truck sat. This was caused by the truck moving back and fourth. Even though it moved just a tiny bit, it was enough to chip the paint. Great job as usual.
Jesus William, you legend. What a great memory you have. You "reactivated" my brain. Yes, I now recall as a kid the chipped paint on the trailer after it was taken out of the box.
It was also in a box set, the trailer was in a long bottom slot and the tractor in a separate slot above it. The set also had a construction shovel, a BP Tanker and a two piece Tractor-trailor.
@@timfaracy754 Great work Tim, I recall seeing the boxed set I think in a catalogue in an antique type shop in Greenwich in England. I should have bought that bloody catalogue too!! Oh well.
Great information.
Mike Espo .
Well done.
look a million 💵💵💵 Marty 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 gr8 job
Outstanding video and presintation. From California USA.
Another fun makeover Marty. Keep them coming.
the tractor is a Scammell conctructor , which was a 6 wheel drive, 125 ton unit, the 'rams on the back are fairlead rollers for the 100 ton winch , which was mainly used for side loading the trailer, nice restoration job by the way.
This was my favorite Matchbox as a kid. My drawbar went missing. I used a paper clip to fix it back then. It still looks good today! Love your videos! I am retired now and I am going to try restoring them some day soon. You've inspired me. Thanks!
Nice reconstruction
Nice restoration and paint job 👌
Yet another great restoration
My favorite Lesney item. Well done Marty. Ray from Moncton, NB Canada
That turned out so beautiful. You made my week.
many years ago when researching methos to apply texture to plastic I was advised when visiting a leading sand blasting manufacturer in Slough to use walnut shells to remove paint without damaging the metal .
awesome job love your restos. nice soldering
Thanks for the video. Great result.
Wonderful video cant wait for more
Marty,
To save tape that is not sticky anymore, try putting the roll in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Typically, it will revive the stickiness and make the tape useable again. Great job on the restoration.
The two 'Hydraulic Rams' are in fact guide rollers for the winch cable.A great number of Scammells all had a winch fitted at the rear.
Great Job Marty ! Congratulations !
Hello Marty great restoration i have one of those your drawbar is different to mine. Yours is better
thank you detail video
Great job, I enjoy watching your video. Thank you.
Sit here in my kitchen by coffee white bread and enjoy your video.Great.😉🥁🥁
I would recommend a finer blasting medium to avoid the pitting. The aluminum medium seems to be gentle on the softer metals.
For the soldering, I recommend an adjustable heat electrical soldering iron with a fine tip.
Nice job Marty!
Thank you! Cheers!
It turned out really fantastic 👍👍😊
It's the glass beads in the sandblaster that is causing the pitting.
Back in the 70's and 80's Cadillac used that very technique to achieve a pitted finish on the face of their outside rear view mirrors.
Amazing paint job!
Part of the time consumption within your hobby surely comes from setting up the camera and filming the scenes of you, executing the different steps of the process of restoring the models. A work we are very happy with, as it is so well done Marty.
And Thank you Marty, for restoration of one of my donationed models.😀
Hey, Henry , sorry it took so long! - Thanks for supporting me and my channel. As I said, "Without you this video would not exist". A thousand thanks. :)
Hi, James. What a surprise to hear your name on Marty's channel. Small world...
Marty, I think this model looks fantastic. This one was a lot of work, but You made it look easy.
Recommend you use glass beads as media for the sand blaster. It will give you a more polished look when you finish
You really were able to show your skills off with this one Marty.
Great restoration 👍 top class
Many thanks
Marty I think the blaster is definitely more environmentally friendly (never mind lungs). New paint also even better sticks to sanded surfaces IMHO - especially should the models ever get played as you mention. Maybe a double layer would come out even smoother towards the original. Cheers from CZ!
Great point!
A very nice restoration, Marty. Back in 2017 I met up with the UA-camr Captain Rolls at a farm toy show here in Pennsylvania and he actually picked up one of the trailers for this set. Sadly the seller didn't have the prime mover, but the trailer itself looked practically mint. Really liked seeing my Matchbox crate at the end, although I think you needed one of your Matchbox locos on the trailer considering it is heavy haul unit. Keep up the good work and say hi to Julie for me!
Cheers PBS!
I've still got my Matchbox Scammell tank transporter but the Centurion is long gone. Nice restoration. 200 tons ... holy heavy duty or what???
Awesome job my friend..
Thank you! Cheers!
@@MartysMatchboxMakeovers I am so glad I found your channel.. I too am a matchbox collector.. I really enjoy watching your videos.. Do you have any photos of your collection.. Thanks.. Benny..
Another great restoration, thanks Marty. Not sure the sand blasting is the way to go, the paint stripper looks a little more gentle on the castings.
I can imagine that particular set wouldn't have been cheap in the 60s. That would be a big Christmas or Birthday gift. You have done another amazing job on what was a wreck. It's amazing that little truck can pull the huge trailer.
Depending on the load, there would often be other tractor units added, in front and/or behind the trailer.
The thing at the back i would say are compressed air containers for brackes and balancers for trailers
My dad was Pickfords driver many years ago Marty. I recall he had a huge can of Pickfords blue in his shed. Shame I couldn't get some over to you! Have asked my neices to visit the Brisbane Tram museum to get some pics of their Scammell....
You should paint the headlights and taillights in your restored models! Like some kind of your trade mark, and a bit more realistic looking! As a kid, I spent a lot of time doing that to my car toys! 😉
Looks great Marty, excellent work! I am glad that you are still with us and thank you for posting this.
Great video Marty.👍👍
I have one in my collection, sent to us as kids in 1960's by an aunt.
I must get it out of storage box, just moved house, still has its box and in good condition.
I'll check on the colour, I think it is a later version.
👍👍👍👍🙂
Another suggestion for you is to do a Makeover of two of the same model. Strip one with chemical stripper and the other sandblast. Finish as usual and see if you/we can tell a difference.
Nicely Done.
Excellent finished project. You're very talented, finding creative solutions to difficult problems. You give concise explanations as you work. Keep up the good work.😎
Thank you very much!
"I'm 'appy wi' that!"
This video is very pleasant to watch on a cold rainy autumn morning in Germany.
Thank you for sharing the images of your work. Great work, should like to be able to do just half of it.
Great project! I love it!
Thank you! Cheers!
Fantastic video, thanks Marty, always great quality. I can remember seeing a full sized Pickfords Scammel combination, they used to have another Scammel unit pushing as well. Most imposing vehicles I've ever seen.
Great work Marty. This model celebrates my 60th year.
Hey, Martin. I really like the videos where Kevin goes about his antics. Would you mind making a playlist with your "Kevin!" Videos? It is one of my favorite pastimes of your channel. 🙂
Just subscribed and glad I did. I have a collection of Matchbox I had as a kid, now they are 60 - 65 years old. Sure could use some work.
"i'm happy with that!" ..as well as i'm happy watching marty restore one of these! ..good stuff.
Awesome job Marty.
Well done, thank you!
I allso use fingers of Rubber Gloves, now, i can't tell you what i use them for, but useing a little gaffer tape " fits perfect",,..another great video mate 👍👍
Thanks a lot, very nice as always!
May this piece stay in your cabinet "with" you Marty, for as long as it does because you're a great storytelling pa and grandpa to a lot many of us.
Brilliant work.
Real nice job but I think the sand blasting makes it looks bad ,the striper is better. But you are the best! Tom B.
Thanks 👍
Another great job! Soda blast media works well on die cast. I find the garnet and glass beads tend to roughen the metal and blunt some of the finer detail too much for me. Very rarely do I have a problem getting all the paint off. Usually it's because I'm not getting the right angle on the difficult spot. The down side to loading your cabinet with soda media is that it doesn't work well at getting rust off of materials like steel, etc. So, I found a small countertop cabinet from Harbor Freight and made that my soda media cabinet. Upgrading you compressor will help immensely.
The repair job was excellent along with the tow hook. Your tall display case reminds me of going to the store and seeing all the matchbox’s displayed. Great job again Marty
Looks awesome ! Thankyou.
You aren’t alone Marty, I’ve stuffed up a couple of waterslide decals and then had to wait and age for a replacement to arrive. Talk about falling at the last hurdle!
What a great way to spend a Sunday morning watching Marty reclaiming the past.
I had that model as a kid, I wanted to be a long distance lorry driver after watching Cannonball on the TV.
I wonder if that type of vehicle was a left over from the war that Pickfords bought (in real life) from the Government surplus. The rear bogie should turn as the vehicle maneuvered around bends in the pre-motorway roads of Britain,
No Kevin today?
Fairlead Rollers (things on back, not rams) for winch cable - friends dad had an old Scammell, he used to pull tree stumps with the winch - regards Andy
