@@lance4842 never said Deep Purple, their metal sound came after Sabbath. Led Zeppelin 1 however was a huge influence to both Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. And Blue Cheer was the first with their cover of Summertime Blues from their debut album Vincebus Eruptum. It's not about just influence either. They had the sound too. The only difference from them and Black Sabbath was a tuned down guitar

A lot of things wrong with this:
    1. They included the most well known or popular albums instead of the ones that actually helped progress and evolve the metal genre. For example, they chose British Steel instead of Sad Wings of Destiny or Sin After Sin that defined the elements of heavy metal
    2.Def Leppard
    3. Slayer didn't help define speed metal, it already existed, they did however define Extreme metal
    4. Rust in Peace obviously isn't Megadeth's most underappreciated album
    5. Cliff Burton wasn't a guitarist goddammit
    6. While Master of Puppets is an undoubted masterpiece, Ride the Lightning was more unexpected and dynamic and it deserved the spot
    That's all folks

As for the placement of albums on the list. that's up too the fans, watchmojo just makes the polls and hosts the results.
And no matter how much you want to deny it. Def Leppard is metal and the list said most important, not necessarily the best. Def Leopard were the progenitors of late 80's Glam metal. They were very important to the metal scene of the time.

Pantera in their "Diamond Darrell" days before Phil joined (and even a bit after) were laughably LA scene... watch the video where they get out of the VW Bug. High & Dry for it's time was solid, a classic album. Now if you ask me to rate Cowboys from Hell against Adrenalize... well duh no contest, but DL chose to go pop so whatever. Anyway, for the usually lame WatchMojo it's a pretty solid list. Don't forget these albums span almost 20 years and sounds change. I would say HnD was closer to "real" original heavy metal than GNR ever was. BTW RJD got an honorable mention but Rainbow should have been on the list in the first place. Rock on!

you are now probably going to say
"Martin, you're being a spelling nazi"
i'm then going to say to you
"you should fucking know the name of the band and how to spell it correctly"
      You'll then get upset
you'll then tell me to calm down
i'll tell you that i am calm
      you won't believe me
so you'll tell me to calm down again
      then, just when everything settles
some other dickhead from the comments section will come in and say "Martin calm down" hehe
      and the cycle continues
      MATE, TRUST ME
THIS IS JUST A LOT EASIER IF YOU SIMPLY UNDERSTAND HOW TO SPELL THE NAME OF THE BAND CORRECTLY
      oh, and you understand
      - I am not triggered
      - I am chill
      - I am Calm
and all that sort of stuff
Def Leppard is a band that has been around forever, you should know how to spell their name
      oh... yeah
you might also say you are not from an english background
      IT DOESN'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Yes. Their album High N Dry was a phenomenal rock album. It was the greatest rock album in that moment in time. This was also during the time before Mtv got their hooks into Def Leppard and before there was any Speed Metal, Thrash or Hair Metal tags (Glam Rock was around since the New York Dolls btw). So we're talking about a time BEFORE Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, Exodus & Anthrax. This is when the heaviest bands were Black Sabbath (with R.J.Dio), Blue Oyster Cult, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Scorpions, UFO & MSG.

Eleni Tsou I know. It is almost like anything played with an electric/distorted guitar is "metal". I think that is why Heavy Metal has never really gotten it's due and respect in the world of music. Especially when you look at places like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The only real metal band in there is AC/DC. The older, 60's farts who only think The Beatles and Joni Mitchel (whom I like both lol) don't know how nor have they tried to actual understand and get into the world of heavy metal. It is so foreign to them that they lump it all together where in their minds there is really no difference between Nelson or Overkill lol. If the Hall Of Fame is suppose to be about influence in music history how can they not have a Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, or Scorpions in there? ...because for them if it ain't hippie and ain't dam skippie! (Did I really just type that lol) Heck, look how long it took them to get Kiss, Deep Purple, and Alice Cooper In. That alone should tell us that it will be decades if Metal ever will get a fair shot. IMO>

I'd put them in the sludge/stoner metal/stoner rock category, more in line with the melvins unless you look solely at their last few, more poppy sounding albums. plus, without the melvins, you wouldn't have either whiny-ass nirvana nor sludge metal like eyehategod, crowbar, mastodon or today is the day, to name a few.

Now seriously: Who listens to Metal and was ever like "Uh, I could really go for some Def Leppard! That's some hardcore Metal!!"... ?!
Now, please write it down for future reference, WatchMojo: Def Leppard is not a Metal band: they play Hard Rock. And therefore: No, they didn't release any important "Metal albums" ... I mean, I could understand Van Halen, but Def Leppard? Come on!
Next: Iron Maiden higher than Priest? Please, look up the timeline of Heavy Metal, and you'll see that Priest had a higher influence on Metal. As well as the look, just check out how Death or Black Metal fans dress, and you'll see what I mean... although I think it's still funny that the clothing style comes straight out of the dark rooms and porn shops of the gay hardcore scene, as Rob Halford, being gay himself, heavily borrowed from that look:) But hey: It works;)
And lastly: Master of Puppets might be the best album of Metallica (by most critics at least), but Kill 'em All was by far more influential! Just think about Slayer, Megadeth, Testament, Anthrax, etc... and after all, this Top 10 is about the "most important albums" albums, not the "best albums". You could also say Importance = Influence, and that is mostly a question of when the album came out and how it was received then, not now!
The only thing probably everybody can agree on is Black Sabbath, but hey: That's a dead giveway, if you'd root for any other album for Nr. 1, you really didn't pay attention to the history of Heavy Metal (or you're Gene Simmons and think you've created everything in music that has a guitar riff in it, plus the Devil's Horns;)
PS: An honorable mention for "S.O.D. - Speak English or Die" would have been nice as one of the most important Crossover/Hardcore albums... as well one of the most metal albums of all time and in general! Seargent D./March of the S.O.D. still has one of the best riffs in Metal history! Plus, the lyrics are hilarious if you're not easily offended ;)

When Def Leppard first started they were actually considered NWOBHM. Remember when Def Leppard released their first album in 1980 Thrash Metal, Death Metal, and all that stuff didn't exist. The heaviest stuff at that point was Motorhead. Venom wouldn't release their first album until 1981. So compared to their peers at the time Def Leppard was NWOBHM.

    • @MrNodebate
      @MrNodebate 8 років тому +3

    • @Gregbaltzer
      @Gregbaltzer 8 років тому +6

MrNodebate I personally can't stand Def Leppard. I had Pyromania when I was 13, but by Hysteria they were had completely watered themselves down to a ballad band. And it doesn't really matter what era it is, you can't rewrite history. What was NWOBHM still applies, that's why genres, and sub genres exist. Those early albums would fall under classic metal. I wouldn't consider anything they did after Pyromania metal though. It just annoys me that everyone wants to rewrite metal history, and change it's roots. It's like saying that Dolly Parton was never county because country has changed and is now Taylor Swift. Or that the Dead Kennedys were never punk, because Green Day is now considered punk.

1977 -1984 Def Leppard was Heavy Metal. They helped create NWOBHM from which we got thrash, death, black and power metal. They toured with Iron Maiden, Ozzy and Judas Priest.
1983-1987 Pantera was glam. They wore make-up, teased their hair, wore spandex, the whole nine yards. They toured with Stryper, Dokken and the like.

Diamondhead's Lightning to the Nations, Anvil's Metal on Metal and Anthrax's Spreading the Disease should have all got at least an Honorable Mention as all three albums were groundbreaking.

Top place cannot be disputed. Black Sabbath is the first metal album ever and by definition the most important one in the genre's history. However, 2nd place belongs to Judas Priest's Sad Wings of Destiny. Way more important than Master of Puppets or any other album on this list below Black Sabbath, for one very simple reason: It was the very fist metal album that showed you don't need to sound like a Sabbath clone to be a metal band. In other words, it broke new ground and paved a way thousands followed. Without it, who knows who, when and where would come up with something fresh. No Sad Wings = no New Wave of British Heavy Metal and thus no Maiden, no Metallica etc.
3rd place belongs to Maiden's Number of the Beast (ironically, their least good album of the 80's in my opinion, but nonetheless their most important one). Then we can discuss about Metallica/Slayer/Ozzy/Pantera etc.

Agree with Priest at #2 but think that album should be "Stained Class" as that album, I believe, set the template for NWOBHM and also for speed & thrash metal. "Beyond the Realms of Death" is the blueprint for Metallica's "Fade to Black". "Savage" was the inspiration for Maiden's "Run to the Hills". Never before had heavy metal sounded so aggressive and sinister on top of being combined for the first time with flawless and brilliant riffs with knife-like precision. You cannot overstate the impact this album had on Heavy Metal from this point forward; NWOBHM, Speed and Thrash metal onward, I think this is the crowning achievement of Judas Priest.

Death's Symbolic needed to be on this list and in the top 5. It was far from the first death metal album, but it added an element of melody and technicality not present in metal before.

Watchmojo, guys, maybe it's better if you don't ask "do you agree with our list" at the end of every video because if you do they'll RIP AND TEAR through you. I mean, seriously, it's not even a factor of people being butthurt, you said cliff burton was a guitarist when he was a bassist, you put def leppard or whatever way you spell it as an entry, you said slayer was speed metal etc. You might as well have dug your own grave with this one.
